Up The Mast and Into The Roaring 40's

Yesterday was a nice calm day so I decided it was time to have a go at climbing the mast. Down came the mainsail, on went the main electric auto pilot, on went my dorky helmet and up I went. Ella's Pink Lady hasn't got the tallest mast and there wasn't much of a sea, but I certainly felt every little roll up there!

It was good to have a look around up top after being at sea for so long and before we hit the bumpy stuff. I'm happy to report that everything looks to be in perfect condition. The view was definitely great and it was really cool to see Ella's Pink Lady sailing along from another angle (see pic below). If I can say so myself, what a cute little boat! The trip back down was the most interesting part because I didn't manage to give myself a very smooth ride, ouch!

Typically, while I was swinging around at the top of the mast, the wind, which had been steady all morning, started knocking us about (changing direction to come from the direction we were headed). Luckily I had my remote commander (a gadget that controls the main auto pilot and displays information like our heading, the wind strength and etc.) with me and was able to bring us around to a better course. It wasn't exactly a high drama situation as there was only a light breeze. Worst case scenario would have been an even more uncomfortable trip back down, but I got a thrill out of the fact that here I was swinging around at the top of the mast sailing Ella's Pink Lady like a remote control car. Pretty amazing!

It wasn't till yesterday morning that I noticed that my adventure up the mast didn't leave me completely untouched. I'm just a little stiff all over and have a few extra bruises. But all good.

We've had great progress lately with the wind a steady 14 knots. Ella's Pink Lady loves reaching in conditions like this and yesterday I hardly saw our speed drop below 6 knots. I love this sort of sailing too because the motion and heal is nice and comfortable. It's a treat being able to move around the cabin without doing the arms and legs everywhere (spider impersonation!) that it often takes to stop myself being thrown about.

Also, yesterday we sailed into the 40's. The wind didn't suddenly start roaring or anything but I'm sure that part comes later. Today's been a pretty average day. Not average as in bad, as everyday's great! Just nothing much new or out of the ordinary.

I dug out all my Christmas music today (my favorites would have to be snoopy at Christmas and Christmas with the Wiggles!) and have been singing along very loudly and very, very badly!

TOP OF THE WORLD MA! TOP OF THE WORLD!

Hello Little Flag,

Thank you for the early Christmas present! What an extraordinary Blog and photo as well!

I don’t imagine that everyone reading your blog fully comprehends the enormity of your efforts and nerve of going up the mast like you did!
The whole going up the flag pole thing, to be flapped around like a little flag; as the pole is being waved and jerked about; whilst trying to hang on and not take an absolute thrashing. She even manages to haul up the camera. Sheesh!

Most sailboat owners have never even seen the top of their mast until it has been un-stepped (taken down)! And here you’ve managed it on a moving vessel; thousands of miles to anywhere, completely alone, and without the chance of someone coming to your assistance should the Little Flag get stuck!

ALL THE WHILE SHE HELMS THE SHIP FROM HIGH ATOP THE MAIN!

Oh... And I believe that the term “Remote Commander” is more fitting of YOUR title, rather than that of the little gadget that controls the main auto-pilot. And I quote, “Pretty amazing!”
Enough said.

Fly on Little Flag, fly on...

ooooo.... the Pink Lady looks so small from up there. Your picture reminds of the time MANY years ago when I climbed up the top of a 100 foot mask on my boss's catamaran. The view was very similar. The thing I remember the most was swaying from left to right, way over each side of the boat. I loved it! :)

Thanks for the pictures. They are really appreciated.

Good luck in the Roaring 40's!!

Hi Jessica,
As many others have commented here........what a great shot from the top of the mast.......just think that not long ago sailors had to spend hours up there in the crows nest looking for land, obstacles, icebergs etc and you even get to steer the boat from there amazing.
By the way did you get clearance from the Health and Safety brigade before climbing up there??? hahaha
Keep safe and good sailing.

Great job on the climb! The bruises will heal and the stiffness will eventually go away, but you'll likely always remember that climb and the view (along with the rolls). Don't understate your accomplishments, you are amazing (but stick with those checklists)!

Hi Jesse,
Great to hear that you made a rig inspection. You know the old "take care of your equipment, and your equipment will take care of you" saying. This will give you great peace of mind.

Speaking of equipment,
what a great rig, I love looking at the technical details of "Pink Lady". Check out the way the spreaders are set up, technically inclined bloggers. This is one stout rig. I wonder how you went up without a winch tailer below. Ascenders on a fixed rope?

Perhaps this virtuoso demonstration of your yachting skills and excellent yacht preparation will get anyone not sailing along with you to "bug off", and mind there own business! If not, who needs them?

The view up there must have been something else! (No shouting "land ho", of course)

Onward to the Horn, brave Captain!
Richard W

The real question:
Is the helmet "dorky" if no one sees it except Flipper or Silly?

Having been at the top of a mast at sea I can appreciate the bumps and bruises that you incurred. I am glad to hear that bruises were all that you found up there. It is good to know that everything is in good shape up top before you get into heavier weather patterns. Chafe is a major problem bouncing around out there.

Have you seen any wear and tear on your sails or sheets at this point??

Hi,Jessica,
Great pic. from above,I think you have a carrier after your adventure ends,at National Geographic might be interested in hour long story of your adventure along with your pics.
Glad to hear of your quiet day's,they are to enjoy.
BY the can the Pink Lady go around in circles like the little remote cars, that would be a picture to see,HA,HA.
It is fascinating how far the technology of sailing has come, controlling your yacht from the top of the mast who knew, now if you can get it to make your meals, what else is left,my funny for today.
Nice to hear you are listening to the music of the holiday season,I do when I am on my PC,I love old Rolf Harris' ''White Boomer's'' when I was a young lad living in Sydney in the seventies,it's a fun song if you can get a hold of it,I think you would enjoy it.
Still waiting to hear back from ''Santa'',think he is having some kind of logistics problem with the sled or finding the rain deer some wet suits, but I'll keep trying.
Enjoy your weather,we here in the northeast USA are expecting another round of snow this weekend,it's funny people run out to the market and buy T.P. milk, bread just for a slight chance of the white stuff,I think it's so strange, but it's a tradition for those Marylander's.
Sounds like your spirits are good and the world is with you all the way.Hope your mum packed some ''xmas cake'' for you or at least maybe some egg nog [unspiked of course].
Keep up your pretty smile,it makes my day when I see that.
Again God speed young lady, stay safe and may the winds blow true for you daily.

What a great shot! You say EPL has got the tallest mast - that looks pretty darn high to me! You must has had a great view swinging around up there - not sure that I could do that myself. Makes me shiver thinking about it!! It's great that you took the camera with you, so we get to see your view and also the remote commander.

You are always so well balanced and in control Jess, well with regards to your tasks at hand. With regards to the male species, that's different. You never get your head around them!

Good to see that the wind is with you - feeling a little anxious about these roaring 40's... I guess that you lot are excited about it all and are looking forward to the challenge. Just keep us informed Jess, let us know that you are OK!

Keep up the singing Jess! I am going to Carols By Candlelight in Sydney this weekend. Will join you in the 'out of tune' vocals!

Hi Jess:
I suspect that it's about a 51 foot mast, from the height you shot the photo. I had a 35' and use to go up the top as well and the height looks about the same. I don't see any step, so I assume you were harness in with a remote in a boson chair. Good idea to ck. everything out before the rough stuff starts. It's fun to go up the mast and one does get bang up a bit, but it's all in the game. Keep it up and it's nice to see u also making some nice speed.

Gee Jesse, past 42 degrees S and rising. Must be time to put your cardy on.

Great pic of EPL from a new angle. Don't suppose we'll be seeing a lot of those. Couldn't you have persuaded one of your motley crew to go up the mast and take the piccie? Or did they all mutiny at the suggestion? Isn't it amazing that the boat always seems to be rolling so much more when you're at the top of the mast than the bottom! It's great to hear just how particular you are being about your maintenance and preparation. And what about the remote control? Things certainly have changed since I last sailed!

It sounds as though you are absolutely in your element out there. That's really wonderful. Taking it all in, the good, the bad and the indifferent. 3,000 miles to the Cape. Almost across one ocean, with a very long detour. Almost 1/3 of the distance through your journey. How amazing is that!?

Thinking of you every day and wishing you all the wind you can manage from the right quarter for you.

Climbing the mast looks like it would be a real challenge even for someone used to heights. I would be nervous attempting it at a dock, let alone while underway. Good thing you were so practiced and prepared to handle it!
Don't worry too much about the "not so smooth" rappel - (Or abseil if you prefer)- that stuff takes practice and whats important is that all is well and you are well.

Glad to hear the rigging is in good shape and that you and EPL are ready to take on the Forties!

I have been up my mast a lot lately doing some work, and its very rollie here in the slot at SF, so what I do is take a short piece of rope about a meter long, and wrap it around the mast, from my harness, this keeps me from swinging out very far or much while up the mast, or while I am coming down or going up, as it keeps me close, i feel alot better with this, just have to undo it when passing spreaders.

Good luck! Fantastic trip!

Well done you litle trouper! That'le show those who worried you didn't have the physical stamina to complete this epic journey. But for me, no doubts! After all didn't you shimmy up the mast in the dark in the middle of the night after your little brush with the sea monster disguised as a bulk carrier? As I recall, you had to cut loose and discard over the side some of your damaged gear to make everything safe. And this you did on your own in the middle of a dark sea not really knowing just how damaged EPL was. My mind reels at the thought of you doing that climb! You even managed to furl (is that the correct term?) up sails and make things as ship shape as possible. An amazing feat which you then added to by getting yourself safely back to land. No heroics at all! which I am beginning to realise is part of your trademark. You are so calm and confident you make us all so proud of you, our little sweetheart!
God's blessings and protection go with you Jess as you enter into the next stage of your journey.

Hi Jessica,
You have just shocked, stunned and amazed your faithful fans and followers from all over the world. Keep it up!!!!! That move was almost as great as you crossing the Equator. Hope your aches and pains are diminishing. At least going away. I sent that liniment special delivery with "Silly".
Well Jessica, it looks like smooth sailing for awhile and then you’ll be getting into some of that bumpy stuff that you like so well. Good thing you took care of the inspection when you did.
Keep on singing girl, a little louder please, I can’t hear you yet.

For Tony L (Mt Martha VIC):
I was in the US Navy for nine (9) years and I had one helluva laugh at that joke. I try to look at life with an open mind. No offense taken. That was a good one. Your call, LOL……….

Thanks to Steve in Calif. for the pictures, they were great.

For Chimli: That was Kevin Costner from Water World, but I’m glad Jessica didn’t take the ride that he did from the top of the mast. LOL…..

Take good care of yourself and the crew and drink lots of water, like someone said in an earlier post, you don’t feel thirsty when you get cold.
Keep up the good work and have some more fun and eat, eat and then eat some more. Do you have some snacks set up for when you get busy????
Be careful and stay safe.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

So not to many mast climbs in the future, we do not need any injuries, but some tasks need to be done.
So keep having fun and keep safe.

looking at your photo from up the mast reminds me of some old footage from the early 1900s. A sailor on one of the last of the clippers, that used to sail between Europe and Australia, was on top of a mast filming 60 foot waves wash over the deck. I guess that was during the winter months and that when you round the horn the weather will be calmer.

The only times I have done it is with someone on the deck pulling the ropes of a bosons chair or with a ladder.
It must be encouraging to chart some easterly distance. Now that you are through the tropical part of your voyage, you must be able to review the charts and get some satisfaction with your achievement.

You have already quietened the naysayers and soon it will be time to show 'mother nature' whose the boss! We know you can do it. We are right there with you...all the way. Rest well thru this quieter period.

Great to hear you're getting into the Chrissy mode Jesse. You will have to give us a few bars of 'Snoopy's Christmas" in your next video..just kidding!

WOWWWWW !!!!! . . . . . What a View !!! ..... Pity you didn't get a few Snaps of the View looking across the Wide Blue Sea towards the horizon: Make sure you do next time.

You said The Worst case Scenario would have been ... 'A Rougher trip Down' ..... Well, not Really... lol ... You could have dropped the Remote Commander; but knowing your expertise, I'm assuming you had it on a Safety Chain or Tether of some sort.

How's your Timing going Jesse ? ... are you running pretty much on time or ahead of schedule ? . . . . . I remember earlier in your journey (I think it was within the first few weeks), that I estimated that you would arrive home within a certain date range (exact dates slip my memory at the moment) which was within your planned 8 months: Well, going by your progress and ongoing determination, I'm confident that you'll still make it within that period. Closer towards the end of your Journey, when you are just past Cape Horn, I'll review my estimation, and let you know, and again lets say, as you pass The Cape of Good Hope, I'll try and give an ETA Date within a couple of days. What do you say Jesse ... If I'm within the Timeframe, you owe me a Personalised Tour of 'Pink Lady' ...?

Keep up The Good Work Sailor !!!

Have a Safe and Happy Journey . . .
