Just Briefly

Just a quick update, it's been another squally overcast day and tonight's become a bit bouncy with the wind gusting to 30 knots and the seas standing up as we pass over a shallow patch. The winds been very shifty, every time I put my head on the pillow to catch some sleep something always seems to happen and back on deck I go, it's a pity that Parker cant also trim the sails and navigate! No complaints though and we're still making great time south!

The clouds have finally parted a little just now and the moon light shining down on the messy sea makes it look like seriously scrunched up tin foil, only far more shiny and of course moving!

I mean with a paintjob like yours you could be mistaken for some kind of "Rainbow Warrior" - and the French always guide them kindly on a bypass... the submarine way...
Good luck. And don't say "we" when you talk to them over the radio. They'll unscramble it as "oui" meaning "yes" and what's on next...?

Hello Jessica:
I am one of the many foster dads and mums you have acquired so far on your voyage. When Roger and Julie go to sleep at night, they know that there are many many other dads and mums thinking and worrying about their Jess.

So as a dad I want to talk to you bout sex. Not sex as in "buoys and girls," but as in SEXtant. You've been nagged about this a bit. I have seen postings elsewhere by very experienced sailors regarding the importance of being able to use a sextant as backup to the electronic GPS systems so widely relied upon nowadays.

I cannot believe that you were not well trained and drilled in the use of a sextant to determine your latitude, etc. So do shoot the sun at noon one of these days, and casually let us know how closely you and the GPS system agree.

Practice, practice, practice during the good times, and if you ever get in a jam and have to rely on your sextant skills, you'll be glad you did.

You happen to be sailing in the opposite direction that Capt. James Cook did in 1768-1771. He rounded Cape Horn, and headed towards French Polynesia, stopping at Tahiti, Huahine, Bora Bora and Raiatea, then on to Australia and Botany Bay.
Your voyage is also historic and you are doing it with a much smaller vessel and doing it ALONE.

Hi Jess

Thanks so much for the update and allowing time for us even though you are so busy and no doubt, extremely tired!

You will be certainly drawing on all your inner strength to deal with your current weather situation. The tropical cruise is definitely over - but I can imagine that you are enjoying this new chapter of your journey and the new challenges that go with the crunched up tin foil as you head south!

It's been windy on the Gold Coast over the past few days and I have arrived back in Sydney today and it's windy here also. A great washing day! Hopefully this wind is working 'with' you and pushing you south at a fast pace. And - I hope that you have managed to grab some much needed sleep by now. If not - the chocolate will keep you going!! I will have some now also, to assist you in your journey! Love that logic!

Take care Jess and stay safe!

Don't know if you're a fan of Larry David, the producer of Seinfeld, but you don't have to get SO close to each island! Tell those islands and atolls you don't do "stop 'n chat" --that's right, no time for "stop 'n chat!"

When I look at the weather radar, prevailing winds and speeds, see you in the midst of so many pop-up land forms on Google Earth, I know you don't shy away from complicated seafaring! Wouldn't it be easier to get east of French Poly? Your ancestry must have seafaring brave-hearts. If not, your descendants can claim you as such! You are so courageous!

Before the roaring 40's, perhaps you'll have a calmer day to catch some polishing chores and sleep? And more chocolate!

Hi again, Jessica! I have missed posting you for quite a few days while traveling, but I have continued to read your posts, and have caused a lot of others to get hooked on it. I was visiting family in Costa Rica, and more than once we stood on the mountain overlooking the Pacific in central America talking about the theoretical possibilities of catching a quick glimpse of EPL out on the horizon! It was a great way to think and talk about you. Internet was spotty and about every other day or so I caught up on your map and blog, but could not post. I prayed for you daily, though, and so appreciate all the details of your journey from your posts. A number of people in CR now have your site in their favorites and check your progress daily. Today I will be praying for your rest. Deep, restful sleep, even if in short periods. I know you must be wise and diligent given the conditions you are in now, but I sure hope to soon read that conditions have allowed you to catch up on needed sleep.

Like all the rest, I sure do admire you and your accomplishment. Wow.

Hey Jess
Just wondering how you are going? Lots of navigating in this part of the voyage which I imagine is not only time consuming, but busy as you still have to trim sails and attend to other things.
You may be tired at the moment, but concentrate with all your heart on this tricky bit, then fingers crossed the seas allow you to take a bit more of a rest than you have had lately. Get well clear of the obstacles then rest. Keep clipped on and dont worry about the blog, we can all wait, it will make it more exciting when the next one comes through. Most important is look after YOU and EPL. As long as you know in your heart that we are all following you, admire you and send you strength. You are just awesome. Smile often too - just for the heck of it... Take care . Carole (Mackay)

Jess, We just watched some of your videos again as you were preparing to set out. I was happy to see your radio encased in plastic. Some questions: Do you carry a spare in addition to your sat phone, etc., jut in case, and could you install it yourself if you had to without someone talking you through it? You arm wrestled left-handed; was that your opponent's handicap, or are you a lefty? Where you have see-through hatches or windows-are they specially made to withstand impacts of debris or something crashing down in heavy seas (God forbid)? How many brothers and sisters do you have and do they love sailing as much as you do, or other types of boating or water sports? Your parents are obviously sailors, too; how much experience do they have and how did they get you so interested in sailing? Did they teach you or did you get mostly outside coaching? How did you accumulate your 10,000 nm prior to your current voyage?

Just questions for when you have some time! Are you heading east near Hoa Atoll? There's only some mildly squally weather and clean 20 knot easterly winds, but we wouldn't know about how much reef interference there would be. Or maybe you are nearly past that by now. I still see just 11 pink icons heading south.

Good goin' to you--safe trip!

Hey Super Sailor Jess,
A question for you or anyone on the blog who may know. I was reading over the rules and could not see anywhere it says whether you can have contact with other passing yachts (not exchanging food or anything), thinking the Society islands might be your best for a little human interaction --- maybe some of your sailing mates from Australia and New Zealand have wandered over that way. Anyway, you look to be making great speed to the south, happy zzz's and watch the reefs. You are an awesome amazing young woman!

Happy sailing from California,

“Jessica is getting 300+ comments a day or her site -- sometimes more than 700. Zac would get perhaps 20 or 30 over a period of days, and Mike Perham would get maybe a dozen.

And tell sponsors that 300 plus comments a day translates into what must be hundreds of thousands of hits. Most people don't comment on blogs. And with Jessica's, there are so many people commenting on her blog that I haven't left a single note yet -- there are just so many others.”

Keep on, Sailor, you are undomitable and you are making a legend.

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
A bad day out at sea is better than a good day at work :-)) so who says you're having a bad time.
I'm not worried at all about you because I believe in you and your support crew. Just because you haven't posted a blog for a few days doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. It's all right!
It's true to say that following your blogs is very addictive, as has been revealed recently by so many out here. I just hope you don't let it get you down so much that you feel the pressure of having to live up to our expectations.
To begin your next blog with an apology won't be necessary as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure everyone out here will just be so happy to hear from you again, so I wouldn't even go there.
To be honest, I'm quite happy that you haven't posted anything for a while because I've been busy with other things and found myself hoping you don't write anything till I get back.
"ET" phone home, your mother's looking for you.
Take good care of yourself Jess, stay safe and bye for now...Sam

Gday Jess,

I was just checking out Zac Sunderlands Intrepid and his sisters yacht also. I noticed that they both have larger yachts than you. Apart from the fact I would feel a lot safer in a larger vessel are there any advantages for smaller or larger yachts?

Smaller buses are better.

Hiya, Jess!

Yeah, well, we're all wishing for your safety and good concentration. We know you're sailing in complicated waters and that you need to concentrate on navigation and related challenges.

I'm happy that you're concentrating on the job at hand, steering Ella's Pink Lady on course and keeping your self centered and, hopefully, fed....and, of course, napping if possible.

We delight in your posts and look forward to hearing from you when the time is right, Jessica.

With prayers for your health and safety all day and night,

Mary, Maine,USA

I really like your description of the ocean as looking like crumpled up aluminum foil that was moving! Come to think of it.....it really does look like that sometimes. Have a great day! Kim

Somewhere between me being nervous to stay alone when my husband is out of town, and you out there on the open sea by yourself, is a completely normal person. I have been following your blog since day one. I love it...it is just unbelievable.

Hi Jess - you are an amazing young lady and I love the way you write your daily journal. We sailed with our children (now grown with families of their own) and one of our sons still loves sailing and racing. He told me about your journey. You sound completely prepared and capable for this adventure and I am confident you will return to your family "safe and sound". We will be checking up on your daily reports. Stay safe. Joyce from MI.
