Trade Wind Sailing

Really loving the way Ella's been chewing away the miles over the last few days. With the wind sitting on 20-25knots from the south east its good trade wind sailing, even if the sun hasn't been doing too much of that shining business lately.
We're also really starting to make some good progress north. The GPS readout now puts our latitude well into the teens.
The temperature is just starting to get a little warm in the cabin, but with so much water over the deck, having the hatches open is completely out of the question. But I'm sure this is nothing compared to how warm it will get over the over the next few weeks!
With a bit of a headache, plenty of sea room and Ella's Pink Lady not needing much attention from me today, I pretty much just spent the day wedged into a comfy position working away at a book and staying dry. Apart from the odd flying fish and bird there's not really been a lot of wild life around lately and still no luck catching any fish. Then again we have just passed over the Tongan Trench one of the deepest places on earth. I'm not much of a fisherman but maybe it hasn't exactly been the greatest place to catch fish? I'll just have to keep trying! The overcast skies have been making for some dark nights out here.
The sky and sea are completely black with no way of telling them apart. It's completely pot luck whether or not I get a face full of spray when I stick my head out above the dodger for a look around. But even if I do get un-lucky and cop a wave, I can't say it really bothers me. Normally I'll just laugh or squeal, even if I'm half asleep!
So it's all going well and at this pace, we'll be passing Samoa in the next few days and from there it really is a clear run to the equator.

Jesse

Wishing you sunny sailing soon. And hoping you can find the sun screen.

It would be interesting if re the followers of Jessica's voyage could have GPS readings posted on a regular basis. Surely, considering the technology that is on board, it would be hard to do.
If taxi companies and other transport companies that employ GPS equipment can keep tabs; why can't this be done?
Anyway, just a thought from a person here in Brisbane.

Hi Jessie,

If you have to squeal, don't forget to do it at the top of your voice.

I hope that you get to look at those stars again soon.

How is the cooking going? I hope that you are able to emulate those cup cakes again in the near future.

Just in case you hadn't heard, the Rugby League World Cup is going well. Looks as though Australia might win for a change. We have even won one of the world Rugby Union games.

Sorry, I guess this doesn't mean a lot to you.

We went to the food and wine shop at the Entertainment Centre today and it was extremely enjoyable.

Just thought that I would give you a taste of what you will enjoy once you are home safe and sound.

We are looking forward to your Equator stories.

Take care and safe winds.

Hi Jessica. I was skeptical when I first read about your intended voyage, mainly because you are so young. I recently started reading your blog and am impressed by everything you are doing. You are awesome and an inspiration. I wish you all the best. The tracker is great.

It would help if the positions on the tracking map were dated.

I've been trying to keep an eye on the weather in the general vicinity of the track, but it seems to be a weather information black hole. Weather Underground gives the weather for some of the islands, but the easiest to use seems to be Google Earth. It will display the temperature and conditions on all the islands at once, as well as clouds. (Look for 'Weather' on the 'Layers' menu which is on the lower left.) I realize Jessica is giving us her 'local weather', but I'm trying to look at the big picture. As far as I can tell, nobody around her is getting anything nasty.
For those (like me) who are slow to read the instructions, CTRL+L will toggle the Google Earth longitude/latitude display.
Hang in there, Jess. Half the world is wishing you well.

I have so much respect for you, your mum and your family. I can't wait for you to prove that age isn't a barrier, only the maturity that you have. And I believe that's something that comes from your parents and your upbringing.

Question if you have time - How are you planning on adjusting your body clock to the various time zones you will be crossing through? Or is there no rest for the wicked and it doesn't really matter? :P

Hi Jessica,
Good morning, just having breakfast and reading your latest blogs. It amazes me that even though you are doing a great job, your shore crew is doing a great job, and in a sense this is free entertainment, you just can't please everybody. 'Nuff said.
How is everything going? Did you conquer the leaks yet? We’re having a beautiful day here today, I hope it stays that way but I think it’s just a calm before the storm. We’ll probably get hit with some snow. Just checking in to let you know I’m still thinking about you (always). Take care, be safe and alert, and keep the wind at your back.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hello again "Jessicaptain"

Sensational Lady !!

Have been away on our Island resort - Rottnest - for the past few days and saw the same setting sun to which you referred - BEAUTIFUL as mentioned and it took my thoughts your adventure.
Good to see that your minders are NOT giving your exact GPS positions - as mentioned before - it would only take some idiot to want to board or pass some fruit to you - to ruin your RTW attempt.
Would love to see where your worldly fans/comments are coming from - by starting a Blogg of counties to which we could add our names under. Should end up with a few thousand.
Noticed from your photo aft of EPL that your halyards enter your biminy through ports to your cockpit thereby protecting you from the weather - how clever !!
You are doing great - Lady - keep your sails full and Gods speed.

Hi

I have recently been watching the UK documentary Deep Water (2006) about the 1968 Round the World non-stop yacht race. It comes highly recommended, and very deservedly.

While I admire you for taking this on, there are just so many things that are unpleasant about it. Having to stay awake almost constantly to avoid collisions, the salt, lack of fresh water, the danger, no fresh food, no chance to stop anywhere, no bathing available (can't go for a swim), chance of falling off at any time, total solitude for 8 months akin to a prisoner in solitary confinement, leaks, sunburn especially with the light reflecting off the water, mechanical problems, electronic equipment problems, and even a high chance of serious injury or even death. The list goes on and on.

I just want to say, this is something that while appealing in the abstract, comes across as positively revolting and excruciatingly demanding in the its actual realities. I would never even dream of doing it for those reasons, regardless of how good it sounds "in theory". I just wouldn't enjoy it!

Still, if you make it, you prove you could overcome all that, which is a heck of a lot more than 99.99%of people can ever claim, probably at any time in their whole lives!

Good to hear your at a nice clip and heading towards the Samoa Islands. Sorry about your headache...make sure your getting some fresh air ventilation in your cabin. Thanks to the high tech people for keeping orientation for you when sea meets air at nighttime and no horizonline...you are so brave!
I was looking up more statistics on seas and the water molecule. One science author states that the water molecule can stay on the bottom of the ocean for 1 to 2 billion years before it joins the water cycle of clouds and precipitation and that the same amount of water exists as billions of years ago...so who knows, the water your drinking now could have been drank by Galileo!!

Hey Jess, I hope you're well.
I remember a time when, while shaking out the reef from the mainsail early one morning, 2 flying fish fell out onto the deck. "Hello breakfast..." By the way Jess, if you're going to catch a fish out where you are right now, be prepared for a heavy one like yellowfin tuna or suchlike as they can be quite a challenge to land. I doubt you'll get anything much smaller in such deep waters. Of course you can't be doing more than say 5 or 6 knots for a lure to work for you. What speed and distance are you averaging a day? Take care and bye for now....Sam

I met Tania Aebi (Maiden Voyage) on the 1st leg of her circumnavigation in St.Georges Burmuda when I was a young man and she was a younger woman of 17. I thought she was a day sailor when she asked if she could moor along side of the 75' schooner I was crewing acoss the Atlantic.
She told me she had just sailed solo from N.Y.C. and because her RDF was not working or she was unsure how to work it, she was afraid she'd end up in Antigua, but she smelled some kind of un-salty air odour like hairspray and kind of followed it into Burmuda.
We really hit it off and became quick friends and I even got a nice mention in her book.
But having read your blog and following your progress, I must say Jess, you are SO much more prepared for this in everyway, especially mentally. You seem to me to be so well prepared for this
that I know you will be successful.
I will drop a line or two to wish you well.

Dear Jessica Watson,

Hey, my name is Kathryn Murphy. I live with my mum, dad, and my older brother John (16).I am 14 years old on the 20th December 2009, I am in year 9 at Armadale Senior High School in Western Australia.

One of my favourite things to do is cook. My dream is to be a fully qualified chef at the age of 19. I know that it will be hard going to school, studying, going to tafe, and going to work experience in the city. But it’s my dream and even though it may get tough I will do it.

What you’re doing is amazing and very inspirational to me and other teenage girls out there. I thought that nobody would attempted to sail around the world solo, and then you go and show that you can do it at only 16. I wouldn’t even have imagined sailing around the world solo myself I would be hopeless, I wouldn’t last a day with out seeing my friends and family.

You have all this spare time on your hands, what would you do? Would you have msn, and myspace connected to your computer? I don’t know about you but I couldn’t live without my myspace and msn.

I would love to hear more of your journey as you go…

From Kathryn

I think you are a very brave person to do what you are doing alone, I know for a fact that I couldn't do it alone. If I was your parents I would be very proud of you. I admire the fact that you are following your dream and you are well supported .

How do you pass the time out there in the middle of the ocean? I bet its nice out there alone I love my alone time but only sometimes. Do you like your alone time or do you get home sick easy ??

I really enjoy little kids my dream is to become a primary school teacher but I don't think my grades will be high enough but the best thing I can do Is try my best hey.

I wish you all the best for the rest of the trip and the future
Good bye xx

Dear Jessica,

Hello my name is Codi Jackson; I live in Armadale and attend Armadale Senior High School and I’m 14 years old in YR9.

I cannot believe what you’re doing. It’s really great I would never do it especially alone, probably because I don’t really like the smell of fish and being on the ocean, I’d probably get seasick!

So what made you decide to do it solo? Do you think it would be extremely fun if you had a friend or something? Either way it’s a good dream to accomplish and would be fun. Do you ever get worried your food supply will run out? What do you think you would do if it did?

I really have no idea what my dream is, I’m young so I still have a while to go but for now I’m thinking to do something to do with cakes. Like a cake decorator or a pastry chef, (yum!).

It’s going to be exciting to see you finishing your journey and when you go back to Queensland. Do you like being on the news and in the tabloids that would be cool.

Anyway have fun look forward to reading your respond letter, if you send one.

Cya!

In the late '70s my parents bought a 12m yacht and taught themselves how to sail. In 1980 they left NZ to sail around the pacific, finally ending up in Australia at the end of 1982. Reading your blog brings back so many memories - my sister and I were 9 and 11 at the time. I have vivid memories of those years and no doubt you will too! Other than technology (we had no satnav, GPS, automatic steering, email etc) things sound remarkably the same, although we did use to catch lots of fish!

It's people like you that give us hope there are still young people who seek adventure and look for something more challenging than video games.

We in the USA are behind you all the way.

Hi Jessica,
Our class 5/6H have been reading your blogs on a regular basis as a shared reading task since you left Sydney Harbour. We have enjoyed reading about your experiences on the water and look forward to what adventures you will write about next. We have a few questions that we hope you could answer for us.
1.Is loneliness a problem?
2.Have you had any unexpected experiences you didn’t plan for?
3.What do you do if a storm is approaching?
We admire your bravery and will continue to read your progress!!
From 5/6H Commo West Public School (Sydney)

hey lil mate I was away celebrating a birthday as you posted a picture blog ..great shots. Its good to see you are making good time.
Your fantastic idea of sailing around the world has no doubt raised many envious thoughts in those of us who arent aboard Elle. "An invasion of armies can be resisted but not an Idea whose time has come".
"Good ideas though do need landing gear as well as wings" Fly jess you an Elle fly over the seas.
A thought for you
Frustration,Aggressiveness, Insecurity, Laziiness,Uncertinty,Resentment, Emptiness these are the elements of the F-A-I-L-U-R-E mechanism These are also the enemy NEVER let them win.
So many Aussies wish that good luck is with you all the time, "a good team has good luck" you seem to have had a good team around you to get you here, so good luck no doubt is with you and Elle.

Have fun, keep up the hard work

I enjoyed your blog today. Teeth marks in the lure reminded me of a time I was surf fishing. Had a bite, a good strong pull then nothing. The steel leader had been bit off. I turned to a friend and said "Iam sure glad I didn't catch it". Take care and God speed.

Hello Jessica,
although reading your blogs day by day I tend to post a comment only when I can think of something more or less sensible to write. Could be writing "Jessica You Rock" every day though...
This morning I was standing in my class - I teach 16-year-old girls. Looking at them funny silly jolly things I was thinking "this is exactly Jessica's age group" - and still what a difference.
They do read your blogs and we all just can't believe how a task like yours can be done by a sixteen-year-old girl.
Wishing you good winds, fisherman's luck and all the best for your journey up to the eqator. Take care!

Our 3 boys, Jack (15), Sam(13) and Max(11) will be watching and are truly inspired by your bravery and dedication to achieve such an amazing goal. We wish you all the best and Godspeed. Take care, Gina, Eric, Jack, Sam, Max
