Moving!

Today was definitely a better day for progress with 13knots of wind from the north east pushing us along nicely. But if anything, it's been pretty quiet day out here again, just a lot of sparkling blue water and blue sky.

I was kept busy last night avoiding a bit of shipping and adjusting the Fleming windvane when the wind dropped right out. It was so quiet and flat for while that I brought my pillow out into the cockpit and grabbed a few cat naps of sleep under the stars.

It already feels like I'm settling right into a routine, grabbing a bit of sleep through the night and into the morning when I can, logging and plotting my position, digging through the food bags for meals and calling in for phone skeds twice a day. There's always something to do or check.

I've been hard at work eating my way through all the last minute presents and sweets that were shoved aboard just before we left. Every time I think I've eaten them all I seem to discover another packet stashed away somewhere!

Thanks for all the comments.

Jessica

Hi Jessica,

I'm a part time sailor but always wished I had the opportunity or the guts to do a rtw sail. I was wondering if you had thought about having google earth track your progress for everyone to watch (like Sydney - Hobart). I'm sure there would be a lot of interest in that. The other thought is a live camera feed...spooky but that would be cool. Have a safe passage and hope you have good weather. You are a brave soul.

Great to hear you are starting to get a few sea miles under your keel. After all the pressure of the past days I expect you are enjoying the respite. You should be keeping some sweets aside to reward yourself for achieving some of the milestones to come and to brighten some of the dark days that may lie in wait over the next seven or eight months.
The poetry you expressed in yesterdays post re the sunset colours resonates with my days in solitude in the outback - a long way from city life.

jessica - you are doing so well! a path is formed by laying one stone at a time. just be sure to suck it all in , be true to yourself, trust your instincts and you will never fail.
you are a true inspiration to me - may you have calm seas and favourable winds - and know that so many are thinking of you. show the world how positivity and self-belief are key qualities that we all need to continue to embrace!

Hi Jess... we are anxiously awaiting a web link where we can view a map of your progress... was channel ten/OneHD going to do that? Their site is not showing it... not much you can do from the middle of the ocean though! Just thought whoever is keeping things under control back home would read this and maybe tell us the link!

Keep up the pace, hope the wind fills your sails for a few days to come!

By the way, there are a lot of people following you who have NO idea about sailing (like me!) I have a couple of questions, maybe answering them in your blog could kill some time for you

1) whats a sked?
2) how do you set the boat, what do you need to do, when it's time to catch some zzz's?

Cheers!

hi Jessica, been reading an old book "by way of cape horn" about 2 young aussies who signed on one of the last commercial windjammers back in the 1930's. Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of people ALL OVER the world who are wishing you a safe journey! I think following your true dream is a brave thing to do, and it's something a lot of people don't get around to doing their whole lives, even if they knew what it was that would complete them. Granted it takes extra bravery to sail around the world! But it can be scary to name your dream and go after it. I think you're an inspiration to everybody, and whilst it will be wonderful to see you succeed, I believe you've already done the hardest part - getting started. Well done you!

Good on you mate, getting into a rhythm and routine is what it’s all about at this stage. You will see plenty of sea in the coming months. Did you take a fishing line - it would mean fresh food occasionally! I think you are very gutsy sleeping at night, but really you have no alternative, and I guess once away from land it’s pretty safe. As a "coastal" navigator and always being on yachts at least 2 up - we always did 4 hours on and 4 hours off shifts, but I have known blokes who were out 1 up sleep on coastal passages. Stay safe, enjoy the journey. Regards Trevor D.

Hope you go well and have a safe trip Jessica. My family and I sailed through Asia and the Pacific for 14 months and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The one thing that sticks in my mind when we show photos of our adventure is people always say "I wish I could do that!" and we say "well why dont you?" and they always have a hundred excuses why not, instead of just doing it.

You are doing it and no matter what happens it is an adventure and our family hopes you enjoy it!

We always said there were 2 types of days. Great days and character building days.

Hey Jess,
You sound as if you are settling in well after just a couple of days. Before long land will seem as a distant and slightly unreal memory as you become one with the boat, and the open ocean your only real world. It is so for most of us that spend long periods at sea.

I wish you God Speed and peace of mind.

Dear Miss Watson. I know that it's early days but can you hurry up and finish, I'm currently trapped in a London office with one of your Australian compatriots who, in between bouts of drinking and lurid behaviour, just will not shut up about how you embody the 'can do' spirit of your nation.

Before you accept this piece of flattery though I should point out that the lady in question has used the exact same phrase in reference to Shane Warne and Ned Kelly; possibly implying that at some point in your circumnavigation of the globe you will commit a series of aquatic robberies armed only with a small leather ball.

Good luck with your endeavour, let us all know when scurvy sets in.

Hi Jessica,
Great breeze you have out there it sounds like a perfect beginning for you to get organised into your routine and sleep patterns. Have you ever read Robert Manry' book Tinkerbelle? He sailed a 13 1/2ft boat across the Atlantic. The smallest at the time, at night he would just pull down his sails and go to bed in the same fashion as if he was at home. There really is no reason to sail 24 hrs a day but we all still do it!

Hi Jesse

i have followed your trip since the early days of prep through to your departure the other day and i will continue to check on you everyday through to your safe return in Sydney. i was surprised that no comments were posted tonight after so many well wishes the 1st 2 days.
i will make sure that this never happens for your next 280 odd days and will always post something for you to read if no one else has. (iam sure this wont be the case)

I just watched Lionheart again tonight (watched it years ago) and it made me think of you so much. I have no doubt that i will think of you everyday and not being a religious person still pray to all the gods out there that watch over you big time. You are everything that everybody has commented b4 me and more...

Stay safe and have fun

Hi Jess,

It is so special to be able to sleep out under the stars. You really get a different perspective of everything when you look up into the black void that is dotted with all those twinkling little lights - looks so different than when you are in the big smoke.

I am following your daily adventure and wish you safe passage and you go girl - you rock!!!

Sometimes wish I had had the courage and intestinal fortitude to do something as special as you.

All the best and stay safe

Hi Jessica, Wonderfully descriptive and inspirational blog, good luck, I must admit I thought your parents were letting the reigns go to early, but after telling my kids for years(13,11,9) that their imagination is their only limit, and watching you story with them, I looked at my little girl and asked, if she came to me with a dream, would I then limit her. no.... best wishes and prayers with you.

Magpie here,
Hi Jessica, phew, you got 700+ comments last time. I was starting to worry that your mum would have the record number of posts for sometime.
The very day after you left there has been a procession of breaching whales past Avalon in Sydney.
I think they were waiting for you to leave. Good to see the whales giving way to starboard, lol.

Good luck!

Jessica, Great to hear your boat Ella's Pink Lady is finally moving along, hope the wind fills your sails in the days ahead so you can gain some distance. Wish you all the best & safe sailing for the months ahead. Remember this - "Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. Hello Jessica,
glad you are settling in and that the wind has picked up a bit. It's also important, that you have a routine and keep busy, except when you want a break, of course.
I could imagine, that watching the sea, the sky, the horizon, an always changing picture of colours and shapes of waves would be enthralling too!
Apart from the sealife you encounter.
I find myself thinking of you several times a day and always send you thoughts of support.
Be safe and always stay alert!

Hi Jessica,
It is nice to hear your description of the deep blue sea. I reminds me of the Crosby,Stills, Nash song "Southern Cross". I wish you the best of luck in finding your identity. I admit being little skeptical of your journey, but I do wish you a quick 8 months and a really beautiful adventure.

Hi Jessica,

I think you are a really strong and tough girl sailing out there by your own. I have been sailing all my life and sometime I would like to do the same as you. The thing is that you are doing it now at least 32 years before me!!! And i will probalbly need at least another 6-7 yearss before I can do the same!!! Good Luck and say hello to King Neptune and his team when you get there to to the line. If you haven´t crossed the line already at least I beat you there. I did it with the Swedish Navy in 1983, but that was of course on a Navy Ship (if that counts)! Sail well and be careful. I am sure you will break the record!!!

Well done Jessica. Don't worry about the people who are so scared of failing, they fail to even try. Those who have voiced so much negative comment are simply too scared to do what you are doing. It is easier for them to criticize and that let's them off the hook of their own insecurities. As for me, I'll tell you outright there is no way I would have the guts to do what you are doing. But I'll be happy to be there in my own 19 footer the day you sail back through the Heads. Cheers Perry
