Happy New Year!

I've had a very different day again. We've spent the day almost completely becalmed. But the novelty of having a clear sky, sunshine, slightly warmer temperature and the company of two Albatrosses that kept me from getting too frustrated.

There was so little wind that even the Albatrosses were flapping their wings today. I know a lot of you have requested some pics, so I had the chance to get some close ups today as they kept landing on the water right next to Ella's Pink Lady (see pics below). An Albatross taking off without any wind is very clumsy, as they have to flap hard to lift themselves off the water which is very out of character for such graceful birds!
I also caught some vision on video (see Videos section of my website).
So it's now New Years Eve for me and now just 5 minutes away from midnight (see pic below). There's quite the wild party planned out here, all the big names from miles around are attending! Entertainment will include party poppers and a range of my favourite treats will be served - believe me, the treats are one part that you really don't want to miss!

This makes it the second New Year in a row that I've spent at sea. Last year I was out in that Tasman sailing another 34footer to New Zealand. As it was only the third day out and a bit bouncy, we were still all feeling a bit queasy. So the treats that Mum had packed for us last year were completely ignored. But not this year!!

Deciding on my New Year's resolution wasn't exactly hard. I think that getting back to Sydney safely will be quite enough of a challenge and my main wish for 2010!

Happy New Year everyone and thanks so much again for all your support!

More great photos and video, thank you! How exciting as you head to the Cape, good to hear Ella Pink Lady is handling the bigger swells well. I'm trying to imagine what surfing down 5 meter waves must be like?!! How big are the biggest waves expected to be??
Take good care Jess, thanks for keeping us posted!

Happy New Year.

I decided some years ago to sail in the New Year on my boat Morning Song. It was an interesting experience being really the only sailboat out on Galveston Bay. I didn't have a watch with me but I knew exactly when midnight was because all along the shore people shot off lots of fireworks. Over the radio, freighters, tugs and people tied up were calling out "Happy New Year" to everyone.

Glad to hear you came through your first gale with flying colors. I've been in 15 foot seas on a 202 foot sailing ship. Hard to imagine being there on a 36 foot sailboat. I remember watching the helmsmen fighting the wheel as wave after wave would get under the stern, and set it down on a different heading than the one they were trying to steer.

here's to hoping that is the worst you see in the straights. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hey Jess,

WOW, What an extraordinary year you’ve had! And just think, you’ll get to do it all again this year (2010)! It might just be me, but I think this coming years memories will trump (outdo) last years by much more than a nautical mile!

Well blog followers, Christmas is well over but the presents keep on materializing. What illuminating photos! Albatrosses, dolphins, full moon, oh my! And the narrative is continually more and more fascinating!

A true sailor sails their way into the New Year; and yes, without doubt, Jessica is a true sailor. 2009 may have had some dicey moments (seems so long ago) but Jess was by no means deterred and oh how far she’s come (truly astonishing). One honor indisputably won is “The most friends ever made in one year” award. Without doubt, that’ll be bested this year! How worthy Jess is of all of the incontrovertible recognition and praise!

Yes Jessica, there really is a Santa Clause!

Be safe,

Hi Jessica

What a magical photo of you!

I was just wondering if the two albatrosses are a pair? How sweet that would be. I am so glad you have them as company and maybe another dolphin will join you soon ... or perhaps a seal (or maybe you are too far from land?)

Oh it is SO exciting sharing this all with you! Thank you again that we can all be part of this amazing experience. And ... thank you shore team also, for making this happen.

Stay safe and happy, and ...

Actually I think you are being looked after. You need a few easy days before the challenges begin building. This is a great time to rest and repair.

It's always good to have all of the local famous attend your party but now that the party is winding down perhaps the captain should put the ELP swabs to work! So far all I have seen them do is sit around enjoying the ride. (guess they are good company)

Hi Jessica,
Well Jessica, I made it back, I didn’t mean to sign off so abruptly earlier this AM but if I went to look at the video’s I’d be up for a couple of more hours, you and your blog are very addictive. LOL…..Seriously!!!!
So the first thing I did was to check them out, and they were beautiful. Seventeen (17) secs of pure joy. I also enjoyed your New Years message, of which, I took the liberty of joining you. “Safe passage home to Sydney”. This is a beautiful way to start the New Year. So many happy and sincere messages, you look so content sitting there telling us how great things are going for you and also about your two (2) friends alongside the EPL. One of the things I enjoy is how well you deliver your messages, casual and very informative, no breathless excitement, and so much in control. If you recall I mentioned that when you had an interview at the Boat Show, how casual and precise you were. You are just fantastic!!!!!
Dilip mentioned in his blog how he had received a phone call from you wishing him a Happy New Year, and he was impressed, and very happy.

A small complaint;
It sounds like your party got a little wild, I understand Billie (William Watson) got hit in the eye by Kiwi’s beak, when she turned to look at someone. He says that he’s ok, the water fixed it on his swim home. LOL….

For Susan Re: A New Year Blessing for all
I enjoyed reading that post, that was a fine piece of work, thank you. Keep it up.

For SaltyDog:
I liked your version of the Dolphin’s opinion of seeing the girl in the boat, I laughed, and then laughed a whole lot more, priceless. Well done.

We’re getting a bit of snow here in WV with more to come. Well, it is winter.
Fortunately for me, I went shopping last week and got a good supply of food and necessary’s so…..let it snow, I won’t have to go out in it, …yeah!!!!!! The cold just gets into my old bones and it’s pure misery. Back me up, all you seniors out there. LOL…..

Well Jessica, you take good care of yourself and those wild scallywags you’ve got on board, How’s Ted’s head????
Thanks for the pictures, they were/are great.
Looking forward to your next post.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.
Michael (74) from Kingwood, WV

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the great photos. How good is alba, just sitting there with his squinty eyes.

He is definitely the A380 of the bird kingdom isn't he. What a wing span !! I like him. He looks so very authoritive and cheeky. You can see he commands respect and he owns the ocean just with his style and look.

Almost Mafia/Godfatherish. I have a caption for that photo I thought you might like……

"Are you aiming that camera at me...well are ya? Just put the camera down, and everything will be everything..."

Such a great photo, it talked to me and then there goes my imagination...

He was probably just thinking...

“Show me your fish...what’s to eat, and make it snappy...”

So glad the weather is kinder to you, I hope there is plenty more of that. Have fun Jesse, lets talk again soon. Say a big gidday to everyone for me. Cheers.

I hope your New Year celebrations were not marred by party poopers, Jess. You're at 55 degrees South and you're becalmed. You're in one of the wildest oceans in the world and just sitting around, photographing albatrosses, and having a really laid-back time. How I envy you.

But envy is not really appropriate because your leisure time now has come as the result of many hours preparation and planning. Can you think back to those interminable, back-breaking hours you spent in getting the boat constructed to your specifications, your horror in the middle of a black night when a Hong Kong bound tanker gave you the kiss of welcome to the unruly sea. You've overcome all that. And that's why you are a true champion.

Enjoy the seas, Jesse. I'm looking forward to welcoming you back to our shores.

Ian from Brisbane

Toni McLean said...

Jesse, you look so content, and absolutely in your element. And how on earth did you get the albatross to sit still - maybe you bribed it with a fish, or some left over rum balls from the Christmas fare! During the time I was living on my yacht I found that different fish liked a variety of interesting foods - some liked cheese, others pasta, and even porridge!

I'm glad the A List were able to drop in for your party. People were probably jumping over each other to get there! I guess instead of dancing on the tables you had people dancing on the dodger! :-) Well, maybe just some tipsy albatrosses at least.

Thanks for the pics, they are really excellent. Little does that albatross know he is now a global star.

It was great that you were able to call Dilip. I think it meant a lot to him.

I think the fireworks at Mooloolaba were much as usual, so you didn't miss much. And at least you weren't being kissed and hugged by half the drunks on the Sunshine Coast. After all, you had all the beautiful people on your yacht!

I guess having little wind gives you time to rest before the next blow - no doubt there will be another time. But we can still wish for just enough wind for you.

Take care
toni

Hi again Jessica
Thank you, we have been hanging out for a photo of Mr Albatross, and how good were these ones ? The NYE fireworks were pretty good but nothing to compare with sailing through a storm with a dolphin as your escort, that must have been mind blowing.Hope the wild party was good, your fluffy crew could make as much noise as they liked without annoying anyone. Well say safe Jess and Go-Girl-Go.

Hi Jessica,
and Jenny from Sydney (10.03pm 01.01.2010) and Bob (5.33am 02.01.2010).

I have had another look at my bird book and agree with you the albatross is most likely a Black-browed Albatross. I chose the yellow-nosed because it was described as having a long bill, and thought the resting bird had a longish bill – but on reading more carefully it appears the yellow–nosed is only yellow on the ‘top ridge’ of its bill.

A Black-browed Albatross is a big bird with a 240cm (8ft) wingspan, yellow-orange bill, white head with black brow, black upperwing and tail and white underwing. Its habitat is described as ‘oceanic, coastal, follows ships’.

I guess the two that accompanied you sighted you on their radar and decided to tag along for a while. They must have known we all wanted you to get some good photos! But don’t quit now. Keep trying - we can all accept more photos and video of more albatrosses in flight. Video of one taking off would be amazing.

Keep pushing the boundaries. You, more than most of us, have the determination to succeed in keeping your New Year resolution, and I believe you will.

Welcome, Swati. It’s great to have you join Jessica’s family of bloggers. We offer your friend, Dilip, our support for the rest of his voyage and look forward to hearing more from you and Dilip’s other friends.

I would like to go down the entire list of bloggers to let each of you know personally how much I appreciate your comments, but that would take me until the year 2011. Dear Jessica -

HAPPY NEW YEAR from Hamilton, New Zealand. I have been following your journey since your departed from Sydney. You are an inspiration. Your photos and Video clips are awesome - the albatross - thanks for the video, I too loved hearing the noise of the boat in the water. Great footage.
Cape Horn is looming but y9ou have the spirit and courage to face what lies ahead. My brother has sailed from Ushuaia (the southern-most city of Argentina) to Antarctica twice in a small 47 foot yacht and both times the seas had been calm.
My Mum (she is 85) is also following your voyage and you are never far from our thoughts.

Hi Jesse, Thanks so much for the pictures and video. They are just wonderful, especially the video following your friend the Albatross flying around you. He looked so sweet like he was posing for you just sitting on the water!! You are looking very well too which it very nice to see. Not long to the Cape now, the time is just flying!! Have a good night Jesse and Take care 'til next time.

Jesse, your photos and comments about the Albatrosses, and the dolphins in a previous post, are just magnificent.
Thank you very much for sharing them with us.
May your New Year bring everything you wish for.
(Hope you didn't get any complaints from the neighbours about the noise from your wild NYpartying!!)

Beautiful shots of the Albatross. Well done for snatching those- they are notoriously hard to photograph. Happy New Year.

Hi to the kids following Jesse,:)

HERE ARE ROMY'S FACTS ABOUT THE SEA......
8 ANIMALS BREED IN THE ANTARCTIC
There are four kinds of seal, two kinds of penguin, the Southern Skua and the Snow Petrel.

All 18 species of penguin live in the Southern Hemisphere and most live in or near Antarctica.

Leopard seals which live in the Antarctic, sing in their sleep.
They chirp and whistle while they snooze...just like my grandpa!

An Albatross can have a wingspan about the length of a family car...3 metres.

That's it for now more facts coming later.
See you later alligator
GO JESSE :)

Thanks for the excellent photos. I especially like the one taken at new year.
We spent ours on a hill, drinking bubbly and looking over all of Adelaide watching the fireworks of the city. I wondered at the time (briefly but I did wonder) how and if you were celebrating.
Happy new year!

The Cape of Good Hope is "The Cape". Cape Horn is known simply as "The Horn". Ask any seafarer.

Well done rounding that one!!! :-) Now don't forget, wave when passing the Cape - we'll wave back with great gusto!

Jess

Thanks for the information on navigation, that you don't travel in a straight line, the question came up in another forum, and at least I thought I understood what they were talking about.
