Calm Before The Storm

It's been calm and sunny again today. I spent the morning doing jobs on deck and soaking in the lovely sunshine. Talk about a treat to have such lovely conditions!

I end-for-ended the headsail sheets, runners and windvane lines (as they were all showing signs of chafe), re-lashed the spinnaker poles, scrubbed at a few rust stains and re-stowed all my rubbish in the aft locker.

But it doesn't look like the calm is going to last though, with the wind forecast to really start coming up again tomorrow. Its sounds like this one is going to be pretty nasty, so this is probably the last time you'll hear from me for a few days. But please don't worry as Ella's Pink Lady and I are completely ready for it!

The wind is not expected to be too much stronger than last time, but it is blowing straight up from Antarctica, so it is expected to be very cold. The little diesel heater will probably cop a bit of a workout!

My action plan for this one is really very simple; stay calm and confident. If I can't manage that, then I will fake it and just pretend to be!

I'm off to get some sleep while I can.

Jesse

Good morning Jess

Just heard a replay of Mum on the ABC....she sounded great although there were touches of a mum being a mum...she obviously loves you very much but is worried yet confident and encouraging as a mum should be. My mum used to cringe everytime I got tackled in football and in later years admitted she hated watching me and my brother each week but she never missed a game. I said is that because you wanted to be on hand if we were hurt and she replied "something like that"
That's mothers for you!!!
Jess stay safe enjoy the adventure knowing mum and the family and a heap of other people a right behind you.

Hi Jesse,
Its good that you have got some rest before the bad weather gets there. It sure can make you appreciate the sun in the smallest way.
Glad your up to scratch with your maintenance, as much as were all behind you, EPL is the one who has to keep you and take care for you.

That Antarctic wind can be a bit of a horror at times, with the wind chill factor, it can get you down.

I don't see you as anything but calm and confident, just another step up that mountain.
I remember when I rounded the Horn, outwardly I wanted high seas and raging gales, inwardly calm seas and following winds, and that was on a war ship over 40 years ago. needless to say we got the calm seas so we didn't have much to brag about.

Well I hope your little diesel heater can keep you warm.

I wouldn't mind betting that dolphin is around somewhere watching over you, and a few albatross for air support.
Take care, wishing you,
Fair winds and following seas.
Angus.

PS Cant work out this google a/c, just too much technology.

Whats all these "WATSON'S" jumping onto our private blog site.

Do you wish to admit you know these people ??

Remember Jessica, its just you and me (plus a couppla hundred thousand others and now a few "WATSONS" as well).

Should we let them in for a few posts ?? Your coming up for your first big test, so I think we should let them in for a few posts.

Take in all the strength you can from your blog replies. Soak in the best wishes from us all and sail safe.

Watch out for these "Watson's". I once heard that one young Watson wanted to sail around the world unassisted and she wasn't even 17. Now, I mean how silly is that !!!

Hi Jess,

First of all it was really nice of you to call Dilip Donde to wish him. He was very happy that you did and if you take a peek at his blog, he elaborates.

You have a world class vessel that is built for challenging conditions and I know you are more than capable of taking on this new challenge just like you did the last one a few days ago - successfully.

As a pilot one of the fundamentals I was taught and continue to practice was to "stay ahead" of my aeroplane and therefore control it. I'll leave you with that simple thought.

Don't worry too much about making a blog entry - right now you have more important things to do.

Stay positive and confident and you WILL get past this challenge.

Hi Jessica

Just getting in a quick one before you get to busy for reading blogs and laying about waiting for the last few days of calm to pass.

I had a look at the predicted storm and you're lucky to be getting the southern less savage end of it.

It's going to blow a bit and give you some wave surfing to do but it's going to keep you busy enough to not realise how quickly the miles are passing.

The blow will be over in 24 hours and when it again becomes calm you will be surprised to find you're on the east side of the cape and on the home run.

We all know you're made of tuff stuff and have all the skills to carry you though the coming busy time and Ella Pink Lady is well and truly up to the task

It will be an adrenaline packed 24 hours but I think you quietly look forward to these challenges.

We know Ella Pink Lady and crew are capable of these conditions so enjoy the ride and most of all the well earned rest you'll have on the other side of it.

All your followers have no problem waiting for an update when you have the time but that's what makes it so enjoyable for us.

We get a big thrill when you post updates and we know the next one is going to be packed with good stuff about the conditions you faced.

Hold tight, enjoy the ride and we'll hear from you when you're out of the Pacific and sailing in the Atlantic ocean.

It's another one to tick off the done list.

Atlantic Ocean, "Done √"

Hi Jessica
I think you are amazing. I cannot imagine what you must be dealing with right now possibly some pretty unnerving moments, but I know you are a pretty amazing level headed girl who keeps control of yourself, thats why I know you are going to achieve this! Mostly attitude plays a role in the things we achieve and you have a determination higher than the highest mountains in the world. you will achieve this and then you will be able to see what the human spirit can achieve. But remember it is Jehovah God who gave you these abilities and he is the one we should thank for all of our wonderful qualities and this lovely earth he gave us to explore. I am following your trip around the world and I cannot express to you how courageous and encouraging it is to see a young girl like yourself be able to achieve something so amazing. Cape Horn will be a challenge to you my dear but I know you will pull through.
Take Care
Will see how you are going through Cape Horn etc stay as calm as you are and you will be fine.
Much encouragement you are an inspiration.

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
Nice to hear from you and I hope you enjoy weathering the storm without any difficulties. This is what you've been looking forward to. Everything you've done in the last couple of years leading up to this is now going to reward you with a fantastic and memorable trip. Enjoy! I have every faith in your ability as a sailor and in your ability to maintain a cool head while others around you (us) around losing theirs. Try to stay focused, safe, warm and dry and don't forget to keep the fluids up, never mind the other, ok? Good on you for making good use of the calm before the storm. Running maintenance is the key. Great that you are vigilant in staying on top of everything. My only hope is that you don't run into anything so nasty that it gets to be beyond your control. That is my greatest fear for after all you are in the most historically notorious body of water on the entrire planet. Apart from just that, I believe in you. Good luck and I'll be thinking of you. I'm off to work now and not looking forward to our 39 degree forecast for today. I'm starting to melt already just thinking about it. Take Good care of yourself and bye for now...Sam

Hi Jess.

You sound nervous and thats absolutely ok.

Stress creates adrenaline and adrenaline is your best friend in critical situations.

It increases your mentally and physically durability.

It makes you mentally strong and your stamina increases more that you can imagine.

So don´t be afraid. Take it as a benefit to be nervous and anxious. Only a fool knows no fear.

I have no doubt, that you will manage that situation.

You are great !!!

Hi Jessica,
I don't know exactly where you're at, just roughly, but you'll get some bouncy stuff, and I think you're going to miss the main part of the storm. In my opinion that's great. In your opinion that's a bummer. LOL...... But you're still going to have fun, there's plenty more where that came from.
Knowing that you have everything shipshape, I'm just going to say that after reading all the latest posts, it still makes me happy to see the amount of love and concern that is, sincerely, shown for you. Not that you don't deserve it, you most certainly do.
I'm happy for Mum, Dad, Granma and Grandad, how proud they must be to see the outpouring of love for their darling Jessica. Its mind boggling to imagine how they must feel, that happy glow in their chest. I can feel it just typing this post. You're really something young lady.

For Sam: I was worried that you weren’t going to post. Had a good laugh when I read “…..never mind the other, ok?” So cool and subtle. Keep ‘em coming Sam.

For Molly: You mentioned that God has a special ear for sailors and those who pray for them. Jessica translates to “God Hears“.

RichieParis re: post of January 3, 2010 6:14 AM a very nice post, well said.

Well Jessica, I will leave you with all your bouncy stuff and hope you have fun doing your ‘spiderwalk’ (someone will make a dance after that) be careful and stay safe. Take no chances, no matter how tempting. See how much faith I have in you, I don’t remind you to stay hooked up anymore.
Awww, what the heck…..Hey Jessica don’t forget your tether. LOL…..Couldn’t resist it.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Wow Jesse,

Took a deep breath when I read your caption of your blog. With everyone talking about the Horn and with the heightened anticipation of what is to come, has me thinkin’ about you often.

Everest of sailing, I like to think of it as a bit of a blow, a little bit of rock and some dancing, then you OWN that cheeky Cape Horn.

Love your action plan, calm and confident and maybe a little faking when needed. Clever girl, that undeniable will to always maintain self control will make you unshakeable.

If worrying worked, I would get down and worry the dog. (easy for me to say as 'armchair army' thanks friend blogger Richie) Whatever it takes, you will come through with flying pink colours.

The four patron saints of sailing are St. Brendan, St. Erasmus (Elmo), St. Francis of Paola, and St. Nicholas of Myra. I have chatted with each of them.

Turn that heater on and the music up, and dance and rock in harmony with the ocean. You Go Girl !!

I wish you 'Enough'
Enough sleep
Enough warmth to keep you comfortable
Enough safe guards and security to rest your mind
Enough music to have a song in your heart
Enough courage when you need it

Talk to you soon, when you are in calmer seas and after you have rested. Have fun Jesse. Cheers.

Another Jessica poem

Jessica’s Chess

The fetch is coming from the south
Straight from Antarctica’s, icy mouth
It’s long in length and unimpeded
Bringing swells, as if stampeded

Yet this is, just a Neptune’s test
Ensuring child is at her best
For back behind, our King’s seen fit
To send his child, some real tough grit

He knows she’s fit, so ready now
To stand the Lady, no sea can bow
But proof of worth, must be extracted
The coming seas, Neptune’s enacted

But watch her take, respond to might
With southern lats, so part of fight
For when she heads, to Neptune’s Lap
Her trust rewarded, she’ll edge the trap

Should the King, close up that hole
It still won’t matter, they’re ready to roll
Between the two, both boat and tar
Their eye on Horn, is right on par

Hi Jesse,
Thanks for such a great blog. I can really see a subtle shift in your blogs - rather like the shift that happens over time from when people first meet and we show our outer selves to each other, and then as friendship develops, we are able to show a little bit more of ourselves. I think we all appreciate your willingness to be open with us.

Taking all that trouble with your gear is obviously useful at a practical level, but I think it also has a mental benefit in that you keep demonstrating to yourself that you are as prepared as possible for whatever will come up, so your confidence in your ability is sustained.

We will all be anxiously awaiting your next blog of course, as you have rightly surmised. No other person on the planet could possibly have so many adoptive parents and siblings! But it is still good of you to let us know that some tough weather may be coming. I hope it is on the best quarter for you so that you at least make some distance with the ride.

A very competent woman I knew years ago used to say, when you really want to achieve or be something, take all the steps you can and then "fake it til you make it". Her example was, if you want to be a ballerina, take lessons, practise, go to the ballet, read about ballet and act as though you already are a ballerina. I see you have mastered that principle.

If your nervousness starts to overwhelm you, just keep reminding yourself, in detail, of all the preparations and precautions you have carried out for EPL and yourself, and how you can deal with the possible situations that might arise. Your preparations and ability will see you through. You know she's a good boat and you're a very competent sailor, in a very real way.

And just accept the nervousness if you can. It will pass, like all other mood states. The storm will pass, like all other weather patterns.

You must be so close to the cape now and after that, a bit of a reprieve for you as you make some northing.

Wishing that the storm will not be so bad for you.

Toni

I don't know if Robert in San Diego was joking when he said this earlier..."- I asked for a US Coast Guard southern unit (ice breaker ship) to air drop you some fresh fruit, but I do not know why they did not, we will try again later. Again I am sorry for missing the requested Christmas present of fruit
Robert - San Diego, Ca"

I hope he was kidding. An unassisted voyage is exactly that Robert, nothing dropped onto Pink Lady whilst Jess is on her voyage. I believe that if something was to be 'dropped' on board, even if meant in the best intentions, it would disqualify Jess from reaching her goal.

Anyways, aside from that, it was great hearing from you again Jess. It sounds like EPL is all 'ship shape' and ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at you, and you too, determined and focussed on getting through this next stage of your voyage.

Stay safe, may the winds push you to your goal, and remember how many people are watching and praying for you.

But this is on dry land. I thought of you while we were tramping as we took dried food fro dinner. The jagged peaks of the Pinnacles that we climbed were 759 metres above sea level.

You are doing so well. I am just so proud of you, and those photos they are truly amazing. What great memories you will have at the end of your travels. I love the photos of the birds.

I blogged Dilip and he has acquired many more people checking out his travels. He is doing well and it sounds like the two of you might be able to wave to each other.

My prayers are with you as you continue your journey for your safety and that you will feel a quite confidence within you and you will be able to handle anything that is thrown your way.

Take care Jesse and keep up that great work.

Each time you share a photo of yourself it seems that beautiful smile of yours beams larger & more pretty than ever. This journey is well & truly where you are meant to be at this time in your life. I can only wonder at what else you may attempt &/or achieve in your lifetime. No doubt you will serve as an inspiration for your generation & many to come as well as those who came before you. I can't wait to read your first book.

I looked up the name Jessica and came up with "In Hebrew the meaning of the name Jessica is: Rich. God beholds."
Wow! how appropriate.

Jesus when He wnt to the cross was not alone as He olso chose that path for Himself. No one made him do it, it was His choice.

Hi Jessica
Am thinking of you as you head for rougher conditions. You sure hit the nail on the head... Just tell yourself over and over you are CALM and CONFIDENT, we are 'what we think'. Pleased to hear you have your maintenance up to scratch and Parker has proved how good he is by keeping you on course in less than idyllic conditions. With you at the helm, clipped on, the fluffy crew scuttering about trying to be useful, you have it mastered !! YES - you have it all under control. Just hang in there. Even if you cant see the dolphins they are close by escorting you through this next milestone.

You are truly a star !!

keep up the blogs - they are really good.

I'm a little bit envious, well maybe not, as I don't think that I could do what you are doing!!

Did you ever read the book by Robyn Lee Graham? He left in the 60's aged 16 and took 5 years to do what you are doing and stopped enroute.

Good luck and keep the excelent blogs coming.

Hi Jessica
Still having great weather Jesse, perfect timing to get some of those last minute jobs and maintenance checks done, before you take on the Horn.
I see you have a heater on board, was not sure if that was going to be one of those things that you would like to have, but couldn't fit in, I think it will be real handy over the next 3 or 4 weeks.
Just going on about temperture, you said you are down to about 8c, here in Exmouth yesterday we had our hottest day since I have been living here, 49c that's right 49c, that's about 130F for all the US bloggers and we had a cool change today it's only going to be 41c. So could send over some of your cool breeze over here, thanks. Looks like it's going to one of those hot stinking summers again.
I'm sure you will well prepaired for the front coming your way. What sails would you be using, would you completely drop the mainsail and have only the storm jib and headsail unfurled ready for the wind change?
WE all know that you are one of the most calm and confident person in the world, you will not need to fake it, champ.
So have fun with the weather coming up and most of all KEEP SAFE.

Several blog-ees have referred recently to Jessica's "big left turn" upon passing the Cape. As far as I can tell, from the current track, EPL is etching a gentle sweeping curve on the ocean and will simply continue forging straight ahead, eastbound unless there is some secret plan to check out the wildlife on the beaches of Argentina! The only left turn en-route is the one south of Tassie.

Having watched the wind and wave charts for the southern latitudes I notice also that the seas are more often than not reasonably calm close to the Antarctic coastline. Hypothetically, apart from considerations of low temperature, icing of rigging and equipment, or possible bergs and obstructions, is there any reason why EPL could not take advantage of these conditions and sail along part of the Antarctic circle? Thank you for any informed responses!

Sweet and oh so capable Jesse,
You've got the right attitude. You've got the right boat.
You've got others to relate to who have, and are, rounding the cape.
You've got a little heater for a cozy cabin...and hot chocolate!
And your team's a call away.

Being with the moodiness of the southern oceans and rounding the cape... it's exactly these challenges that make your journey so magnificent!

Keep in mind that loosing confidence is momentary and no big deal, because each time it returns, it's more solid and stronger than ever!

Here's another excellent video on rounding the cape from a BBC documentary May '09 of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. It shows big waves and the ocean, and amazingly, they were even able to dock on Cape Horn!

Hi Jessica,
Hope everything is going smooth for you. Not to worry about posting,
during your period of silence, all us posters will be entertaining ourselves just communicating, expressing our feelings and wishing you well. But never fear we’re right here for you, all together.
It looks like you’re sailing along in between two (2) weather cells, it doesn’t seem that you’ll be bothered by either one of them.

Just a passing thought, I know you faithfully check your lines, pulleys, and sails for chafing and such. Do you ever check your tether lines and hooks at your hook-up and also where you would hook it to the ship??????
Just thought I’d pass that one along.
Young lady, take good care of yourself and all them scallywags, are they contributing some help thru the rough areas????
I just remembered, you never did tell me how your thumb was doing. You probably forgot you even burned it. LOL……

Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Part 3 – Cape to Cape

Once around the base of South America it’s due north for some calmer weather and a short rest. As the voyage is non-stop I won’t be pulling into port, so calmer seas and refuge behind land will feel like a holiday. The track will take me close to the Falkland Islands, most probably to the East.

Sound like a pretty good plan to me.

Yes, Michael (hezakiah299) is right, we keep enteratining ourselves each other while waiting for the good news and the new post...

For Andy (Brisbane), without being quite sure of it, I think that Jessica is going to turn left (smoothly) after the Cape Horn, to find some shelter from the most violent westerly winds, behind the american continent's and Falkland's, and follow the planet's curve toward Africa at a latitude a little more northern than the straight line between the capes, to have a softer sailing. No certitude, but that is my feeling.

Thinking more (we have much time to think, these days...) about worrying, I understood that we are less concerned about a disaster, as Captain Watson and EPL are both fit to win that challenge, than about how hard it ill have been for them to win... how much fear, how much exhaustion, how much suffering... We don't want them to have too bad times!
The good point is that the harder it will have been, the more experience they will have gained, and the more admiration from us too.
Once again, Jessica Watson, you are a model for all of us. The more you give, the more you receive.
You are a crazily good giver, Captain! I wish my children (and us) were able to achieve 10% of what you are teaching us!

Thanks News team, for the report that Jess is coping so well, as if we doubted it, this morning Sunday 3rd I checked the satellite picture of where Jess is and it certainly looked like a fierce storm, not that I know much about reading weather charts, just checked now, Sunday 7.57pm Perth time and it's completely cleared up and all clear, this is the site while jess is in the cape horn area:
http://www.meteochile.cl/imagendesp.html?vissat.png
if you're like me you find it is easier to get an idea of the weather conditions with a satellite picture rather than those radar pictures with all the colours.

Grant Fjermedal said...

The anticipated storm must be a localized system -- as there isn't much weather showing on www.passageweather.com until Thursday and Friday, when 30 to 40 knots are forecast. (Jessica's weather router works with far more detailed charts than what we see with www.passageweather.com, so it will be interesting to hear her report.)

Thanks to great project planning it looks like Jessica has got at least another week of good weather on the way to the Cape. Having a bit of 30 to 40 knot wind is to be expected in the Ferocious Fifties. The trick is to get around Cape Horn without having to deal with 45 to 60 knot winds.

There will be plenty of challenges beyond the Cape, but if the weather holds for an additional week beyond what is currently forecast, Jessica might have a relatively peaceful rounding of the Cape.

A good deal of luck comes to play. Dial the date on www.passageweather.com to Wednesday January 6 and you find a midnight storm at the Cape with 45-knot winds. That would be misery. But 18 hours later it is down to 10-20 knots, and stays that way for some days.

After rounding, we'll probably see her head north, outside of the Falkland Islands to climb out of the Ferocious 50s and the nasty weather that churns through the Ferocious Fifties far beyond Cape Horn.

Watching the weather charts it seems as if much of the worst weather occurs east of Cape Horn, where 50-knot winds are forecast for Friday the 8th at about 30 West longitude and 53 degrees South latitude.

- Grant Fjermedal, Seattle, USA

Oh My Dear Jessica (Beverly here in Tassie). However will you find time to read all your blogs now with a break for Mother Nature? I just read through all 336 of them and I'm sure there are more in the pipe-line to be posted.

To the shore-team: Thank you so so very much for the "Latest News" and for posting the blogs so quickly. Although we know Jessica is extremely, I have a funny feeling that we, her blog family, will keep each other entertained until she gives us all the gory details of the "trip" through the light fantastic.

Jessica, are you tethered on and clipped up or however you do it? You better be or the albatross will tell tales, and Flipper might even tell your Mom! See, you can't really, ever be fully alone, there is "always" somebody who will tell on you. I learned that from having 5 sisters!!

So it sounds like there is a bit of all kinds of weather there with you, and Dusty has really hot temps where he is in Dubbo, and Sam is going to go there and go fishing. Now I ask you, fellow blog family, are we or are we not acting like a "real" family. Even with little skirmishes to boot. I love it so much. Thank you all for giving me the privilege of being part of this family. It is the best time I have ever had on the internet in say, 7 years. That is when I was playing games on Pogo.com and happened to meet my husband. I was in Tacoma WA and he was here in Tassie. Well, you can see who uprooted and moved can't you? Goes to show you, women are flexible, hardy, handy, calm, competent, - sounds like a lot of what Jessica is made of, and she is only 16yo. Can't imagine what she will be like when she is as old as Methusala like me. LOL

Well, dear Jess, it is almost midnight in Tassie so I need to do something even if it is wrong. Remember, God is sitting right there beside you with His everlasting love surrounding you. If you do get nervous, just call His name "Jesus" and He will answer you and give you the Peace that Passeth all Understanding. And be aware of the Legions of Angels surrounding EPL and yourself keeping you safe from nature's elements. And I'm sure that Flipper is out there close by somewhere as well as the albatross's swirling in the current of the winds whirling around keeping EPL on course also.

I also am praying for you and Cdr Donde (due to his equipment problems he may have a difficult time if he encounters this storm) and I know 3/4 of the blog family are praying for you too and the ones that don't due to different beliefs, are sending you warm, loving, cuddly, encouraging thoughts to keep you uplifted until we can talk again.

God Bless You and Keep You, God Make His Face Shine Upon You and Give You Peace. Amen
Beverly & Andrew Penney, Bridgewater, Tasmania

Hi Jess and her team,
I was just wondering if it would be possible to add a webpage on the meteo-forecasts that are used to steer Jess in the right direction? Like satelite images, pressure, temperature, winddirections, etc., etc. Would be interesting to follow what kind of information and advice she is getting!
I am sure she is having again company from them albertos and dolfens!
Keep up them dodgers!

Re: the South Atlantic route

Many thanks to Richie and another "anonymous" poster who promptly responded to my query, which was of course purely hypothetical. Jessica's team will do what they have planned, and in a highly expert manner I am sure, as the journey so far attests. But as a thought experiment for observers and planners it is all rather interesting.

With the exception of the lee coast off Bahia Grande, the strong westerlys at the Cape do not necessarily keep in a straight line - they can fan out and up into higher latitudes passing the Falklands and South Georgia, driving very bad weather systems to latitudes as high as 40 - 45 degrees south. The key is in accurate forecasting and timing to route around them with some luck, as referred to by Grant in Seattle, and the faithful prayers of supporters who are always awake somewhere in the world.

In fact there is a particularly notorious large stretch of ocean northeast of South Georgia (on the way to the African Cape) which often experiences a huge zone of turbulence, whereas the Weddell Sea along the Antarctic coast, in contrast, is very mild and calm at this time of the year.

And with that, I'll put the matter to rest in case I set anyone's nerves on edge!

Cheers and all the best of success, Jessica "in the moment" at your present position - God is in charge!

Hi Jessica,

Your great Shore Team advises that you are sailing in 30 knots of breeze with 4 metre swells. I would think that with the right amount of sail up you would be enjoying these conditions and making rapid progress....

Staying warm and dry on this part of the voyage is of vital importance to assist you in staying calm and confident and making the right decisions....

Keep up the great work and stay safe....

Thinking of you and hope to hear from you soon...

Ooooh that's well done! Everything nicely checked, cleared up and in good repair before any unpleasant surprises may even think about appearing. You do so well.

I know nothing about sailing but Jessica has got me so interested in her adventure. I had no idea how serious Cape Horn was! How tough and brave she is for even attempting this goal of hers. I searched Youtube videos about rounding the cape and read about it online. I didn't realize...
Thought I'd share what one sailor wrote about his around the world race...

You want to sail around the world--real heroic, right?" he said. "Except that once you're out there alone, you don't have a lot of choice. Then it's just a matter of accepting things as they are and trying to push on with a little style. There are moments out there when it's blowing stink, however, that test every ounce of humor you have, moments when you would pay dearly to be someplace else." ~Arnet Taylor

Stay tough Jessica...we're all pulling for you. It's definitely a mental challenge.

Hi Jesse,
Glad to hear from your support team that you are weathering the storm well. I thought of something that may be useful, although you probably already thought of it. A few years ago , I read an article about a sailor on a high altitude Colorado mountain lake that was caught in a vicious hailstorm with two to three inch hailstones. He used a bike helmet to protect his head as he sailed through it. You always have your "dorky" helmet for this kind of thing.I wonder if you have ski goggles on board?
When you talked about faking it till you make it; There is much wisdom in that statement, because from everything I have read about heavy weather, there is no standard way of dealing with it. Every storm is different, and may take a different tactic. The goal is to avoid breaking waves, and stay in control.

You are doing fantastically well!
Richard W

PS I hope you don't have to rescue your old sailing instructor!

pulater... where did you get this verification word from ? And how do I read it ? "pu later". What... and when...? "pul at (h)er". Ella's Pink Lady ? Pull her, isn't that against the rules ? "pulater" is that the mighty pullator, something like a terminator, just in pulling ? And what has that all to do with Jess and EPL ?

To the Jessica Bloggers,

Have never done any cold weather sailing, (summer time only in an 16 foot) when Jessica started her voyage one of the things I did not wonder about was staying warm at the lower latitudes. I guess I just figured you put on more and more clothes until you got warm.

I was interested in reading JW's comments about giving the "diesel heater" a workout.

Google was my friend and I read up quite a bit on diesel heaters for sailboats. Now I understand how she'll stay warm inside the cabin.

This entire adventure of Jessica has been a learning experience for me.

And, the contributions of so many of you (too many to name) have aided greatly in that education.

Thanks,

Hi Jessica,
Today I watch a Film on TV, telling the Story of "James Cook". Really amazing to see how they sailed around the world and into unknown area`s with their antiquated gear -:))...and so on.
You are out there in the same scenery and doing so well,great.. you can be proud of it.
I can`t await the next report of your journey and hopefully more nice pictures from really down under.
I´l cross my fingers for you, that you get a nice steady wind pushing you smooth, but fast around the Cape into warmer region`s.
Cheers, from Hardy!

THE LEGEND OF JESSICA

Chapter 3: Interview of God Neptune

Q- Oh Mighty God, would you mind, if you please, telling us about Jessica Watson?

A- Ha Ha Ha, Jessica Watson, yesss I remember!!! Of course!!! By all my Tritons! She is that young human girl with an attitude, floating all around my realm in a pinkie nutshell!!!
Well, well, what a chick!!! For sure, I will never forget her!!!

Q- When did you see her for the first time, Your Divinity?

A- Ho Ho Ho, not really early in her odyssey... I remember, first heard of that daring one by some of the Nereids - my uncle Ocean’s granddaughters-. They told me of a girl sailing in their Tasman Bathtub with a kind of Barbie boat, all pink, and they wanted to have the same to play. Oh these kiddos! They are 77, you see! What would my domain look like with 77 pink boaties ramming around? Probably with their Stuffed Fishes inside!!!
For having provoked that little childish rash, I ordered all my fishes to avoid the Pink Boatie fishing lines.
But that Jessica girl left the area to head Nort-East, up to the Equator. I couldn’t believe this pollywog was sailing alone! Then I sent her Silly, one of my trusty birdos to check on her. She showed a good guest for him. He stayed for one night, so he could see she was actually on her own, and had a long chat with her. He reported that she was clean, no buoy friend hidden on board, and that she was quite open minded about buoys, but didn’t seem to be interested in a mature gentlegod with a long white beard, as mighty as he could be.
I tried to tempt her with a beautiful strong rusty buoy, that I sent to tickle Ella’s Pink lady’s belly (oh yes that’s her name), but the girl still wasn’t interested at all.

Q- And then, she reached your Equator Holy Line, Your Dampness?

A- He He He, yes, and I was waiting to see how that intrepid pollywog would try to seduce the Old Grumpy God I am... As many do, and though she was alone, she managed to stage some show on her tiny deck, and she poured a full bucket of delicious salt water on her head! Yes, Sir! That was quite good from her, especially as she wasn’t aware I was hidden there and watching. She even tangled her boat’s keel in my beard, naively thinking it was the Equator Line! Poor little thing, Hi Hi Hi! She made me smile, I confess.
But then, what she did was beyond anyone’s imagination!!! Listen, poor seaworm! She gave me a present that I had NEVER EVER be given!!! Melted chocolate!!! I had only heard of chocolate by the winds of Eole, but I had never tasted anything as delicious!!! That’s how she became a genuine shellback and my favorite sailor of all. And to thank her, I ordered a tuna to hang to her fishing line.

(TO BE CONTINUED)

THE LEGEND OF JESSICA - Chapter 3 - suite

Q- Huh, Your Waterness, but you didn’t try to keep her for yourself, as many Gods did in the past?

A- Ha Ha Ha, miserable young crab, I thought of it! For sure I thought of it! And I must confess I kept her for a short while in Kiritimati Island waters... Wondering... She would have been a delicious spouse for me.... But you see, I am already married and my old Amphitrite wife isn’t much easy going, plus my brothers, especially Jupiter, are awfully jealous... and the girlie was interested in young buoys (what a silly idea???). And she had offered me melted chocolate! So I let her go. But I followed her carefully. You see, I felt like and adopted grandgrandfather...

Q- And you approached her again later on her trip, Your Highness?

A- Ho Ho Ho yes, you sandy scallywag! When she was nearing the Cape Horn, By Jove my Brother! I sent a lonely albatross to check on her, and then I wanted to have an eye on her by myself, but my long beard played me a trick again! Her boat was so tiny that it got lost in my beard hair, like in a thick fog for her. So I withdrew from her route and let her sail further, but with one of my albatrosses patrol to open the way in front of her.

Q- But you also let her go through a storm, then, Your Blowness?

A- Of course, you despicable sea dust! It would have been an offence letting such a brilliant sailor round the Horn without any difficulty!!! How could you only think otherwise for a blink? You landmen are just stupid, it seems!!! Rounding the Horn without a storm would have tarnished her performance, you dumbo!
But you should have noticed that I sent her one of my most trustful dolphins to swim near Ella’s Pink Lady all around the storm...
I tell you: That gutsy girl is my daughter! I never had nice children until this XXIst Century. My adopted (grand---grand) daughter is a wonder, and I cherish her.
I am sure you didn’t even notice her name! Why do you think it is WATSON?
Well, WAT is for WATER... and SON because she is my breed. Isn’t it obvious?

Q- Yes, of course, Your Splendor, but what happened next?

A- He He He, you nosy empty shell, the time for this interview is over. I must go to see if my Jessica posted some new blog!!! Come back in a few moons, and I shall tell you what came next!!!

Q- Thank you, Your Fishness...

I was able to go back to May 7, 2008. I'm working my way through it in its entirety. It is a great peek at her background, efforts in getting this voyage underway, her support team and systems, and into her young life. She has accomplished so much in so little time! Her blog is just like reading her personal diary! If you haven't checked it out, I'd highly recommend taking a look at it. Read just a few entries at a time if that's all the time you can spare, but do take a look at it --it's well worth the read. There are lots of beautiful photos also. Jessica is an amazing young woman from an incredible family!

I'd also like to say thanks to ALL of you bloggers for your wonderful comments and words of encouragement to Jessica. I don't know whether you guys realize it or not but your comments reach well beyond Jesse. They provide a whole lot of wisdom and encouragement to many others as well. I, for one, am thrilled to be a part of this growing company of multi-national well-wishers and I'm learning heaps from you!
