Australia Day!

Every year at school we used to get asked what Australia Day meant to us, this year I couldn't be much further from Australia, there's none of the things that make a typical Australia Day celebration out here, no sunshine, beach, no taking the day off or BBQ but this year I really can say I'm proud to be an Aussie! And also how great it feels to have the support of the country behind me!

I've still got a lot of the world to see (a lot of Australia too actually!) but the things that are special about Oz to me (other than all the cool scenery!) is our relaxed positive attitude and 'can do' approach! I'd like to think that we're a county that's capable of coming together to tackle challenges, one that's capable of showing the world that we can achieve the things that we believe in.

So how am I celebrating? Well last night I was pretty thrilled to get a call on the sat phone from Kevin Rudd who offered to pass on a Happy Australia Day message to everyone from me! That's about all I needed to make my day!

In other news, I'm pleased to report that the dunny is all back together (thank goodness!) and that the stove fired up again (yessss!!!) after drying out a little. Can I just say that, after enduring a few days without a stove my respect for James and Justin (the guys who kayaked the Tasman) and any other sailor or adventurer who's main food source was self-heating freeze dried meals has just gone up about a million notches!

So getting Ella's Pink Lady back into shape after our little battering has been going well, not helped by another front that passed yesterday but luckily it didn't give us any more than 40 knots of wind. I'm currently waiting for the wind to ease a little more so that I can finish patching the main sail and pull it right up again. Ella's Pink Lady looks a little worse for a few battle scars but more importantly is still as strong as ever.I shouldn't really be surprised as this is what we set her up to take and why we picked the S&S 34. Still it's nice to know.

I certainty can't complain about the miles we've been covering lately, we're flying across the Atlantic, I'm starting to worry that it's all going to be over and we're going to be home before I'm ready!

Well I'm going to sign off and have a go at making meat patties with tinned mince for a hamburger. Then maybe even some cake or muffins just because I'm so thrilled about the stove working!

Happy Australia Day!

Jesse

P.S. Congratulations times a million to Abby Sunderland for departing on her voyage last Saturday, I know what a challenge it is, just to get to the start line. Despite the fact that there seems to be a lot of adults determined to see Abby and I pitted against each other as rivals, I only wish her the best of luck and am totally thrilled that there's another girl going for the record!

G’day mate !!. January 26th is our Australia Day (for all you overseasers who don’t know), that was the day in 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip, Commander of the First Fleet, sailed into Sydney Cove to start the Colony. Since this time we have had many Super Hero’s, people we can look upon with the utmost respect. At the moment there is one, just 16 year of age, a mere slip of a girl, with the most beautiful smile, and a heart as big as the pretty pink boat she sails, who has taken on the most dangerous, frightening and courageous challenge that anyone could ever imagine. We are proud to be Australian, and we are so very proud of our own Captain Jessica Watson who is epitomizing the great Aussie spirit. So on Australia Day, when we chuck another lamb chop on the barby, we will drink a toast to Australia and to Captain Watson with our VB (we are from the southern state) or our Port through a Tim Tam (hi Bob)....oops Jesse is underage .... with our glass of milk, and wish her a safe trip back to our wonderful country. And we know that she will receive a totally different reception from that of Captain Arthur Phillip, some 220 years earlier.
Go-Girl-Go.

With love from Faye and Max (Mulgrave, Vic)

Good to hear all is well with you and Ella's Pink Lady. The way you reported the events about the knockdowns and the rotation tells me that you are a very self disciplined and rational thinking person.. In fact all what a good Skipper needs to be..
You are "absorbing" experiences which will be the guidance for the rest of your promising life.
God Bless and a "Happy Australia Day"

Records will always be broken, but you and Abby and all the other adventurers who think out of their comfort zone and take on challenges such as these, are the people that are most respected and admired. No matter what record is acheived and by whom, all of you are an amazing inspiration.

Jesse, it is a typically hot steamy January day in Sydney. I've just been for a swim across Bondi, from Ben Buckler to the Icebergs, and saw the thousands lying on the beach. The smells of BBQs, suntan lotion and aeroguard is heavy in the air. Sounds of "I come from the land down under" and cricket commentary on transistors. A welcome southerly buster is expected this evening. A very good Australia Day.

Jesse, I know it's important that you get your sails repaired and other things working but what's most important is getting the cabin neat, clean and spotless before your mum has to scold you for not being tidy. Well, you do continue to prove your mettle! I'm betting all those folks on that reality show, "Survivor" are wishing they'd had you on their teams! Not only quite the sailor, but a stove and dunny mechanic! (No, I never actually watched that show...and I'm not sure it's something that would have aired in Australia, so forgive me if you aren't familiar with it, but I guess the title is self-explanatory.)
I didn't know there WAS an Australia day. How nice! I'll have to let my brother know everyone in Australia is celebrating his birthday--at least that's how HE will see it.
How funny that you are now talking about 40 knot winds as though they were gentle breezes.
Happy Australia day Jessica!

P.S. (back at-cha) I was just copying your post to send to my brother, and realized I'd missed your P.S.. How sweet Jessica! I KNEW that's how you'd take Abby's joining you out there. Happy Australia Day from the USA to you, Jesse! We nominated you a while back for Aussie of the Year, and your note expresses why so many feel you are the perfect nominee! I e-mailed the Sydney Morning Herald this afternoon and asked the editor to change out the photo they keep using with you coming in with a broken mast. Because the press should express pride in your accomplishments as an Aussie in not giving up pursuit of your plans, they could avail themselves of a more recent photo than the one of that tough moment. Tonight I see they removed the "survival" photo from your article. We'll see what they post next!

You do your country proud, Jesse, if it's OK for Americans to say so. You are a role model for many of us here in the States, not just young people either! We are really touched by people sharing stories action on life-changing dreams. Your congratulations to Abby, de-fuses the competitive scenario a bit and demonstrates solidarity with a kindred spirit.

So the meth stove really doesn't cook upside down?!! We won't even talk about the dunny, but your repair skills are quite noteworthy! OK, back to your cooking, cleaning and mending...

Well, the Killer Whales and I talked about the BIG storm and your four knock downs. Then we all drew some "EPLs" and used the mirrors to flip you upside down (sorry, but the kids quite enjoyed this). but then we talked about what it would have been like to be hanging upside down in your wet seat... the feeling was pretty unanimous... SCARY!

Of course, after reading the blog one student had to ask what Jessica would do without a "dunny"... they'll be relieved to hear that you got things put back together!

It's still Monday here in Campbell River, so I think we'll celebrate Australia Day tomorrow in your honor!

Dear Jess, you are so incredible!!
I think I enjoyed this blog even more (if that's possible) than the drama one! Your post details so much resiliency, having moved from a place of being battered yet in control, to a place of recovery, repair and rejoicing....in Australian pride, in an intact dunny, and in eating hot food. Yippee!!!

I DID have a vision of you baking 100 cupcakes to celebrate your 100 Day Milestone. But I've known that you had a few things to do to take care of business and manage Mother Ocean greeting EPL in these last couple of days.

Enjoy your cooking time and I hope you get a few good zzzz's tonight. From my narrow view looking at Passage Weather, I was thinking, "If Jess could only sail up to the 40th parallel, or so, there'd be relatively smooth sailing to the Cape. You'd be north of the storms I've seen in PW."

All the best to you and your scalliwag crew, as Richie Paris says.

Hi Jesse - how about this for a prediction. Young Australian 2011 Jessica Watson; it's on the cards and it would be an appropriate choice. Why? because Jesse represents everything Australian: she's having a GO, she's a fighter, she's experienced and answered the doomsayers and at sea has dealt successfully with a number of major challenges but despite all this she continues, as we have come to expect, has marched on regardless - young Jesse is a inspiration and a classic role model - Jesse shows us all, young and old, that the true Aussie spirit for adventure and challenge is alive and well. Jesse shows us all what can be done when you have a dream, a purpose in life and in Jess's case a purpose that defines a brave, bold, strong-willed, humble and beautiful girl and; notwithstanding, the outcome Jesse will walk away at the end of all of this with her head held high knowing that she left no stone unturned in her quest to discover the real Jesse. Precious girl you are 'true blue' mate!!

I hope the cooking came off OK and the stove is in good nick again. The menu sounds an excellent substitute for the BBQ and I'll have a Crown Lager with mine please.

Well the PM got his priorities right and I think my prediction for next Australia Day has some merit - huh!!

"til next time precious one, think safety first, stay in the moment, and good luck with the maintenance and rest up when it is safe to do so.

You said there is no sunshine where you are - well I don't believe that because there is a beautiful 16 year old out there that brings sunshine everyday to millions of people around the globe; particularly to her Aussie mates. Jesse is 'true blue' Aussie treasure and a wonderful ambassador to the youth of our nation.

God bless darlin' and stay clipped on tightly.

Hi Jesse,

You're still inspiring me but I'm having trouble keeping up. Your determination is infectious and it has me darting hither and yon through the web looking at all the various suggestions coming in from the WWF (World Wide Family) so I'm running just a bit behind. Being a slow reader I have just been looking at comments from Jan 4th by Hezekiah 299, Amazedbyou and Samurai about our Aussie word which they spelled as "Moccas".

Anyone who went for their dictionary probably would have come up with references to coffee.

It comes from the word "mock" (in Aussie meaning "sling off' i.e. to treat with derision) and can be used when attempting something difficult as "Don't put the mockers on me or I'll mess it up".

I am enjoying the side chats, such as in respect of above which was well worked out, and many of you bring tears to my eyes with your beautiful writing, poetry and art.

I assure you, Jesse, that I keep up with your current updates and just continue to marvel at your great strength of character. Sail on dear girl and make us proud.

Hi Jesse, It is always a total relief when we haven' heard from you for a short while and we get your next blog and know that you are still in good spirits and still looking east to Sydney. We figured it was going to take awhile to get the total picture of damages to boat and the Captain. My wife got a chuckle of the fact that you now refer to 40mph winds as somewhat of a stiff breeze!!! I guess after hurricane force winds 40mph wind would seem like a stiff breeze. My wife and I are looking forward to going to the land down under and partying with you Aussies. Truthfully, visiting Australia is on my bucket list. The term Oz is new to me but I'm a firm believer in the saying "You are never too old to learn something new." They say that on St. Patrick's everyone becomes Irish. Jessica,

You are so gracious and thoughtful towards all the other adventurers you support, it is a pleasure to be a reader of your blogs.

I think we all needed the latest blog to see your air of calm after your ordeals frightened the rest of us in our armchairs with the visions of you upside down and being thrown down the face of towering waves. If you can calm down then so should we....

Fare forward,

Hello Jessica

Good to hear from you today. Been a bit worried about you fixing everything up. Really glad to hear that for the most part you have everything back in order again. Must be tough mending a sail underway. Hope the solar panel is still at full power. Read through a lot of the 800 plus comments from yesterday. Must have seen the word AMAZING a couple hundred times. So I'll just say I agree with them, You Are!
Though Abby is a fellow American and I wish her all the best and will be following her journey like I have followed yours. You caught my heart and own sense of adventure first. You're hard to beat in that sense. I look forward to the day of maybe seeing the two of you together chatting about your travels.
Happy Australian Day!!

Hi Jessica (Beverly here in Tassie)
How wonderful that PM Kevin Rudd called you on the SAT phone. That's the equivalent of my President calling me; however, I'm doing nothing but laying in bed in Tasmania, ha, wonder what I can make exciting about that! Well, my cat, Pudi, makes the bed hop around when she jumps from bed to window sill - she weighs in about 6-1/2 to 7kg so she sure packs a punch when she "takes off".

I admire your generosity of spirit on congratulating Abby on her embarkation. A "normal" 16-yo would not do that I don't imagine. I'm so proud of you for not being bitter, as I'm sure your Mom & Dad are also. You are one heck of a girl/teenager/young lady/woman. Heck, I don't even know what to think of you as - well, I do, you are "OUR JESSICA"! We love you and admire you and are cheering for you to "come on home".

Glad your storm "only" had 40kt winds. That is getting to be a normal day for you isn't it. No biggy! As long as the dunny is fixed and the stove is working. You mentioned "self-heating, ready to eat" meals. Never heard of them! I remember in the US Air Force we had C-Rations but they weren't self-heating, and they were kinda nasty if I recall. But hey, they were high calorie and sustained you through it all. In WW-II (I wasn't around til 9 mos after it was over, heehee) but they had packets of cigarettes AND CHOCOLATE in them for the guys (weren't any women in the field in those days with the exception of the wonderful nurses and Red Cross volunteers).

Gosh, here I am getting all soppy recalling what American soldiers/sailors/airmen went through and also remembering my "adopted" Diggers. You are right up there with them in mind-set and morals and every other kind word I can't think of that describes you. Guess I'll have to get out the Funk & Wagnalls before you get home.

Speaking of "home", my husband was just in here saying he hopes he gets to meet Bruce when we come up there to Sydney to greet you coming home. I'm glad I talked him into making early bookings on the ferry (18Apr-24May) because you probably WILL come in early. BUT...on the other hand, if there are too many parties and get-togethers after you get in, we may have to change our departure date, LOL. I'm not going to miss any of that for the world.

I started physio on Monday and I told her that she had just under 3 months to get this old, decreped body back in shape after being in bed for a year. I'm so excited about coming up to see you, I could probably go out (and in my mind)run a marathon! LOL, probably wouldn't get much past the driveway but in my mind I can do anything!

Well my dear Australian Lass, remember GOD is with you at all times, right there beside you and you can talk to Him about any little thing you care to, no matter how trivial. And His Legions of Angels are surrounding you and EPL and definitely doing their "jobs" in keeping you safe and guiding you back home to loved ones' arms. {{{HUGS}}} Beverly & Andrew Penney, Tasmania

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY! Captain.

You shine brighter and brighter each day. What an awesome day will be your arrival in Sydney Harbor.

Thanks for your good wishes for Abby on her departure. It does appear that great spirits recognize each other with respect. I think one of the things that moves me so, is the idea that as long as there are young people such as yourself in the world, maybe we have a good shot at being more than we are now with all the strife, injustice and lack of compassion. You give us hope for a brighter future because of your example.

More than anything, I would like to say what an absolute class act you and all of the young circumnavigators are. As you are sharing your kind words for Abby Sunderland, Abby also has had nothing but words of encouragement and praise for you as well as for Laura Dekker. You, Abby and all of the young circumnavigators before you share a total respect and appreciation for each other. All of you are setting an example that all of us adults need to pay much more attention to and to learn by. I want to say thanks to you, Jess and to Abby for the grace with which you display your spirit of kinship.

How many can say that they had the opportunity to celebrate Australia Day with Kevin Rudd. What an honor, Jess. I’m so glad that you were able to light the stove to fix some goodies for your celebration. Just make sure that Big Ted doesn’t sneak too much of your cake or muffins. From what I remember from seeing him in your videos, I think that he needs to watch his waistline a bit. But then with my waistline, I guess I better not get too addicted to those Tim Tams.

Happy Australia Day to all…….

IT IS JUST GREAT TO KNOW BOTH YOU AND EPL ARE ALMOST BACK IN SHAPE AGAIN AFTER THAT ORDEAL. I HAVE BEEN AWAY FROM AUSTRALIA SINCE 1947 BUT MY THOUGHTS ARE ALWAYS AROUND ON ANZAC DAY AND AUSTRALIA DAY.
Australia Day

Australians are a funny lot, you'll often hear one curse,
How things have started badly, and they'll probably get worse,
The weathers dry, the sun's so hot it's stolen all the water,
The Government has never done the things we think they oughta'.
But if we hear a tourist say his home is much more grand,
They had better be prepared to make a very solid stand.
For although we Aussies may complain at what's become our lot,
When someone knocks this country, we defend with all we've got.
We may criticize some teenage brat, may even wish them failure,
But we stand behind them cheering when they're playing for Australia.
Because, if this is home to you, the country of your birth,
Then you back the native player to beat anyone on Earth.
When the cricket bats are swinging or when someone scores a try,
When a home grown horse has won the cup and made the owner cry,
When some paraolympic athlete hits the front and sets the pace,
You'll hear 'Aussie Aussie Aussie' as the crowd goes off their face.
And although we like to take a break in overseas locations,
If you take the time to question this nomadic population,
They will tell you without blinking that wherever they may roam,
The best part of the journey was the last bit, ....coming home.
For the sun was never brighter on the beach at Waikiki,(????????)
Than it is on all the sandy shores Australia has to see,
The water never purer nor the air as fresh and clear,
The people never friendlier than those that we have here.
If you venture to the outback where grass is scarce as snow,
As you swelter you may wonder what it was that made you go,
But just look at the locals who have lived there since their birth,
And I know you will not find a better class of folk on earth.
All across this wide brown country from the Cape to Hobart town,
There are people who will help you when you find the chips are down,
And if someone should abuse you, and does it just because,
Then that person's not Australian, and that person never was.
So when you feel disgruntled just remember this rendition,
And never blame the country for the acts of politicians,
Look up and count your blessings when you see our flag unfurled,
And be grateful that you live in the best country in the world.
Happy Australia Day

THIS CAME FROM ONE OF MY GRAND NIECES IN OZ.

I'm happy for your progress and repairs! I am also really glad both you and Abby S. have such great attitudes about "the competition". Naturally the wonderful media wants to turn this into a drama-filled battle "for the record". They nearly make it sound like you are both armed! I guess they feel a story about 2 young people who both understand that this is a personal challenge and an adventure wouldn't sell papers. Carry on with the great work!

Hi Jesse,

There's nothing I can add really that hasn't been said before about what an absolutely wonderful sailor you are not to mention a beautiful warm-hearted Aussie. Your good wishes to Abby and concern for the Haiti victims deomonstrate this. What really amazes again about you Jessica is I've been following since day 1, plus going back to you very first blog in May 2008,is anything that arises that is a problem you fix, there you are sewing up the tear in your main sail as well as getting the stove working again and the all important dunny operational.

Well how amazing Kevin Rudd (Prime Minister of OZ for overseas bloggers who know who KR is) rang you on Australia Day. That must have made you feel very proud, and rightly so. So 100 days, 11,500plus nm up, and you're speeding along way ahead of schedule. Remember to thank the dolphins and the angels. I reckon you can look back on that storm as a positive thing- 1. it showed you can handle the toughest of conditions the oceans can throw at you, 2. it demonstrates to everyone your amazing sailing skills, 3. It absolutely silences and puts to bed forever all the critics who first said one so young shouldn't do this, then when you do do it they CAN'T then turn around and say, "Oh you were lucky you good had good sailing conditions"

Sail on sweetheart xxxoooo

P.S. good luck with the repair of the sail, know you will have it fixed in the next day or two.

Hi Jesse! Happy Australia Day! Sorry you've missed the fireworks but sounds like you've probably had your own version of that.

You forgot about the tennis and the cricket! I'm camped in front of the television flicking from one to the other. I am usually at the Aussie Open but not this year.

How nice to get a call from the Prime Minister - you must be feeling pretty chuffed. I hope next year you get the Young Australian of the Year as you deserve it.

The usual debate is on about the flag - whether we should take off the Union Jack as Canada has done. And the date is fairly contentious with the indigenous (can't blame them actually). But patriotism is higher than ever. I've never seen so many cars with flags flying and houses with flags proudly displayed. Makes one proud to be Aussie.

Fair sailing, and hope all the repairs can get done quickly and smoothly. Glad to hear your dunny and stove are back to working order! Hope you enjoy the hamburger and sweets!

Yep, Big Kev passed your message on, thanks :)
The news reporting of your little rough patch was sensational(istic), quite pathetic really, I'd rather hear it straight from the horses mouth anytime :)
And yes... your nailed it on the head with the rivalry, not sure why they feel the need to portray it as such, I think in these changing times you are setting a wonderful example that it is more about just doing it than doing 'against', good onya Jess.

Sea Fever

I MUST down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Meant to add on this day in 1788 my 4 x great grandfather arrived in Australia "below decks". He was originally sentenced to death, to think I almost wasn't here LOL.

What must he have thought on seeing this wide brown land after his native Cornwall I can't even begin to imagine.

I often think of that First Fleet voyage and wonder how they managed and what they thought.......and here we are 222 years later and we are in daily contact with you AND getting photos, marvellous! But then I'm of the generation that was transfixed on July 20, 1969 when that oh so grainy (in retrospect) film came back from the moon. One of those "Where were you when...." ? moments.

Happy Australia Day!!! Just a very typical Australia Day in Brisbane. Hot. BBQed lunch. Plenty of time swimming in the pool. Games with the kids.

Very cool getting a call from the PM. He is my local MP. I have chatted to him at local fetes and school events and he seems like a good bloke and very down to earth. I am sure that he was honoured to speak with somebody who is SO famous - you!!!

Good to hear that you are getting EPL back together again after being shaked, rattled and rolled. Thank goodness the stove works. That is what I was most worried about. Could you imagine cold food until May.

Your note to Abby shows just what a great sport you are. ONYA Jess!

Anyway, best of luck with repairing your mainsail. I hope that you up up to full sail ASAP. Back to school for the kids tomorow. You have that to look forward to in May.

another thing you can be proud of is your sheer and utterly good sporting like character. I don't think a record is as important as the quality of character that this kind of experience builds within you. But records sure feel nice!!!! Glad to hear that the dunny is back together and you're able to have a hot meal!!! I really admire the way you roll with the punches. Do you have any vegemite on board some Aussie friends of mine made me eat it for Aussie day. It's not half bad as long as you don't know what's in it :)

G'day Jesse,

Just a quick message to say we’re sharing the Australia Day
celebration with you from out here in Centralia.

Crikey, you need to be congratulated, the way you’ve achieved so much with such expertise. Ella PL and you are a positive inspiration for so many people.

Good to read you’re on top of the on board ‘make and mend’, that the
dunny’s dinkum again, and the stove is steaming.

And, yes, I agree. Comparisons between Abby and you are inevitable in competition conscious Oz. But it’s with good humour.

Your sentiments are more valid, but. Abby and you deserve equal
recognition and encouragement, As you rightly say, just for getting
under way.

It’s also nice to know you're thinking of the coastal mob back here while you’re making a splash there.

But some of us are a long way from
the shoreline here in Central Australia.

An Australia Day Barbie at the beach? Gosh, that's the sort of thing dreams are made of out here north west of The Alice.

And what we wouldn't give for a cool coastal breeze, or to be out for'd hand on a sailboat right now.

But I know you’d not want to trade places :-)

Besides, you’re clearly a way better sailor than many of will’ll ever be.

Ah well. I'll just have to content myself with "sailing' on a camel, the "ship of the desert' for the moment.

Now I"m off to an Australia National Day barbie. Goanna and camel streaks. Yum Yum.

Oh, and for what it's worth, the temperature here under the Tamarind is hovering just over C50 degrees, in the shade.

Ah, but life’s great isn’t it?

May you have fair weather – well, as much as possible.

Cheers,

@ Tracie Lynne Hall, yes "Survivor" is shown here. I don't watch it myself. The 2nd season was set in the Australian "Outback". I put that in inverted commas as they were a short helicoptor ride from the Great Barrier Reef ROFL, I did watch a few episodes but it wasn't as if they were put in the middle of the Simpson Desert. They kept re-iterating the "dangers of the Outback" til I'd had enough and switched off.

Hey Jess how is your Australia Day? Mr Rudd passed on your message and had this to say "Jess Watson is a remarkable young Australian," and also The prime minister described you as no ordinary young Australian.

"She is an extraordinary young Australian," he said.
too right kev!!
I rather like this very funny quote from Barry Humphries
“To live in Australia permanently is rather like going to a party and dancing all night with one's mother.” and last but not least another from Barry
“Australia is an outdoor country. People only go inside to use the toilet. And that's only a recent development.”
have a great day Jess we are Australians and we are proud of this great nation and of you!!!

Jesse, you're such a gem. Reading your words gives me hope for the future. People like you in your generation are going to be much in need as you tackle the mess that my generation has been a significant contributor to - the environment, consumerism, "it's all about me", "I want it and I want it now" .... Your generation is going to have to pull together to take on the challenges successfully.

You certainly needed that stove working again ... even more than the loo - there's always a bucket. Or an old friend of mine used to just hand out over the side - I never had the nerve for that! Toilet and bidet all in one!

As for a mere 40 knot storm, I'm surprised you even mentioned it! :-) I hope it was pushing you in the right direction.

Hope the hamburgers were a success - with tomato sauce of course!

I guess muffins will have to substitute for lamingtons or a pavlova! Hey, what about fairy bread or vegemite sandwiches? After the Weet Bix, of course! It is Australia Day after all!

Happy sailing - look out for high flying dolphins

Anonymous said...

Hi, Jessica,

I'm so glad you made it through the storm alive and not badly injured, and that EPL is still functioning and mostly repairable. I'm amazed that a sailboat can turn upside down and (1) turn back right-side-up by itself (2) be in operable condition afterward and (3) have a person inside it emerge essentially intact. Tough boat; tough crew!

From what I've heard and read about Australia, and from the Australians I've known online, I agree with your comment about your attitude and approach. Example: I read an Australian government webpage once giving advice to homeowners on how to protect their houses during a wildfire -- based on the assumption that they were going to stay and fight, water their roof, that sort of thing. In the US, no government would EVER suggest that civilians stay and fight in that situation, for fear of being criticized or sued; the advice would all be about how to run away, let the professionals fight the fire, and if the fire wins, let the insurance companies (backed up by government bailouts backed up by nothing, except money we borrow from Red China) pay for the losses. We once had a pioneering spirit of self-reliance, but we traded it in on help from Uncle Sugar; you lot still seem to have it.

Sorry for the political rant.

Your mention of Abby Sunderland was so generous. She's an American but this is the first I'd heard of her effort. She must think she has a faster boat; she has further to go than you do (because she's starting further north from Cape Horn), but plans to finish in less time. Teen circumnavigation appears to be a family hobby with the Sunderlands. Do you have a younger sibling who can try to take HER record away, if she gets it? (I'm joking.)

I hope the weather gives you a break so you can have some memories of the Atlantic that do not entail having spray blowing in your face at 40 knots.

Best wishes,

Michael in Texas, USA

Happy Australia Day Jess,
Thank you for a wonderful inspiring message making me proud to be Australian. Many of us take for granted this rich, trouble free life we have here and are just beginning to appreciate that we have many advantages we have been blessed with in this country of ours.

Jessica you have drawn people from all over this earth together offering us a little a little haven where all have a common interest in caring for and loving you and all involved in your journey and it would seem each other. I have to admit that it would appear that you belong to the world right now, but when this is all over we Australians want you back (heaven knows leaders like you don’t grow on trees).

I’ve followed your Blog since the Qld premier (Anna Bligh) first said they would investigate ways to prevent your leaving on this heroic voyage, but this is the first time I have sent you a message (or anyone for that matter).

I have to say that you attract the most beautiful people from all over this world to your blog and I just love reading, laughing, and learning from you and them. I can’t mention all their names (most have been acknowledged many times by others) but I would like to acknowledge what “AlbacoreLiaFail said” in today’s messages as being one of the reasons I am proud to be one of the multitude of people who follow you, and believe in your honest and brave approach to your journey and it would seem life in general.
I am blown away by your ability to take us along with you in your writings and leave me feeling new emotions as well as ones I have known all through my life that have resurfaced. I only wish I had had the foresight to allow/encourage my children (now parents) to reach their full potential and not take them for granted.

Along with everyone else I wish you a safe and satisfying journey home, enjoy each day (and no more frightening us).
Stop playing around out there and get on home.

Sadly the American media is like a Dinosaur which devours everything in sight and just walks right over the top of anyone who gets in their way. Thus Abby will get a fair amount of publicity. I did some research on the storm you faced and the BBC has posted on YouTube a 5 part series about rogue waves at sea. they tell about how rogue waves are formed and it gives a historic, scientific and visual explanation about the waves and why they are so deadly. it even has pictures of massive ships virtualy destroyed by these waves.

This will give all bloggers a new respect for your courage, seamanship and ability you used to face what you did through the storm and knockdowns.

I will also give everyone a brand new respect for your faithful servant "parker" and the massive part he played in getting you through that storm system safely.

Everyone needs to watch these to get a visual idea of what you went through during that storm.

I wish I was there now. How nice of PM Kevin Rudd to surprise you with a call.
Good news to hear that the stove is working again. Nice with a hot meal.
I agree with Faye and Max comment.
Once I have been in Australia the 26th of Jan. It was 1988, in Sydney, when your country celebrated The Bicentennial. It was a great experience. I agree with you about that you are a people with relaxed positive attitude. A friend from Aust. came visiting here in Sweden, and after being here for some weeks, she said: "You live for working, but we work for living". Maybe the climate and the history has something to do with it.
Good luck with patching the main sail. Maybe you will catch some fish if the wind slow down.
Nice of you to wish Abby all the best. Only you know what a voyage she has ahead.
Take care you special girl.
Regards from a sunny but a very cold place, -14C.
Ingrid, Tyreso, Sweden
