Weekends sailing and exciting plans!

This weekend I was away again down in Brisbane to take part in a Multihull race from Brisbane to Mooloolaba on a 47ft ocean racing cat ‘Big waver rider’. But before we were going anywhere the rig that had been taken out for maintenance, had to be put back in. In-between the rain on Friday, the riggers tuned the rig back up and we made it to the start line on time Saturday morning.

The race started out very slow with no wind but by the time we reached Mooloolaba the wind and sea had picked up enough to give us an exciting finish surfing a wave meters from the rocks and crossing the line only a few seconds before another boat, putting us in forth place.

On the Sunday the whole family headed down to North Stradbroke Island where Mum and I spent some time talking to a very helpful and knowledgeable Mike Hogan about publicity. In-between all this I’ve been working hard to keep up with all the offers of support I’ve been getting.

Looking ahead I’m due to sail off down the coast of Australia on Big Wave Rider to Tasmania on the 5th of February. From there I’ll be flying back over to New Zealand and joining 25m ‘Evohe’ (see www.evohe.com) for a 10 day trip from the bottom of New Zealand into the southern ocean.

Hopefully I’ll then have a week to catch my breath in New Zealand before Flying to a more tropical Hawaii to join another boat. ‘Ragtime’ is a 68ft race boat and I’ll be sailing her to LA with skipper Brian Caldwell who was the first person under 21 to circumnavigate solo in 1996. Have a look at his website www.liquidflight.net

After that mouthful I’ll be home in March to begin the project of sailing and peppering my own S&S 34 for the big trip, departure date has been set for 7th November 2009!

Fair Winds,
Jessica

Home to Australia

Skipper Jim and I with MagicRoundabout awaiting customs in New Zealand.
The sunset the night before we arrived in NZ.

Absolutely nothing out here and becalmed in the middle of the Tasman.

No hands, the windvain did a great job of getting us across the Tasman.

After a night on watch, my reply to Ricky's cheery 'Smile' my not have been all that cheery!

Finally behind the wheel and on to New Zealand!

I arrived home Monday morning to find that my bedroom was undergoing improvements meaning that there’s not much more than a dusty hole left and was put to work moving dirt and rocks! Great for building up the arms.
My weekend spent in New Zealand was really worthwhile and lots of fun, I was very impressed with the support and interest from over there. Thanks everyone!
There’s plenty going on other than moving rocks but more on that later for now here are a few more pictures Ricky and I took during the voyage.

Also I’m very happy and proud to say that the website has received 36012 hits this month so far! Most of the hits were from Kiwi's, come on Aussies!
Fair sailing and all the best,

Jessica

New Zealand's still rolling!

Becalmed off the New Zealand coast with dolphins.
First sight of land, North Cape New Zealand.
Sailing nicely off Lord Howe Island, 25kns of wind.

First of all, an apology for the delayed and long awaited update from shore and for the often brief posts while at sea. Communication by sat phone isn't all it's cracked up to be! I'm newly inspired to find a communications' sponsor. For the wonderful posts and tracking map we did get I owe a huge thanks to Mum and Martin. Mum's efforts translating the static and getting descriptions out of me were heroic!

New Zealand still rolls every morning when I get out of bed but I've slowly been adjusting to shore life. The last few days feel like they have passed in a cloud of interviews and phone calls. I'm itching to get home as things are really starting to happen, but have been stranded over here till Monday morning when I'll catch the first affordable flight out. An ex kitchen hand with a very sorry looking bank account can't afford to be fussy!

I'm currently staying at Matapouri, a place just north of Tutukaka, where I can finally begin to deal with the mountain of emails in my inbox. But it's not all work. I've been discovering that the coast-line here is as amazing as it looked from the sea and meeting various Oceanswatch members.

Below is a list of links to media stories including TVNZ's video clip. Keep an eye out on my website and blog for more pictures, stories and videos, coming soon!

That's all for now,
Jessica 'out'

Dolphins off Tutukaka

The amazing dolphin display that we were treated to off the New Zealand Coast. What a welcome!

Arrived!

We got into the customs dock at Marsden Point Marina at 0840QLD Time 1140 NZDT.
Last nights sailing and tacking under the moon were so lovely I was just savouring the last night at sea.

The customs and TV crews were there to meet us. When all the filming and photos were done we headed into town for some more interviews.
I saw the TV news tonight and thought it was someone else!

Keen to get home to get on with the BIG trip!...there is so much to do!

I am still looking for a Major Naming Partner...so if there is anyone out there who wants me to take their name around the world, I'd love to hear from you.

We are comming into Whangarei Harbour in calm, flat coditions

It is a rather miserable day all grey and raining, but we have the party poppers out to celebrate sighting land.....but I don't know if we are going to be able to see it with the weather like this!

The sunsets and sunrises have been cloudy and grey so nothing to look forward to.

We have an ESE 15 knots

We have two reefs in the main and half a tuck in the Genoa.
We need to wait until the low coming down onto North Cape has passed before heading around the top.

We had some lovely Baked Beans with a cheese sauce for lunch. I’m afraid we have not made a dent in the supplies as we have not been very hungry for the first few days. We will have to spend the rest of the trip eating madly to make up.
