Quick Update

Glad you all liked the pic from the mast yesterday. It's been an overcast day today and the wind has been pretty light, but we've been able to make reasonable progress with the big light-wind reaching sail up. That was the one sail that I didn't expect to be using at this latitude!

It's cooler again with the temperature down to 17c and over the next few days I'm expected to see a low of 12c.

I spent the afternoon tackling a little electrical problem. The battery monitor (a gauge which tells me the condition of the batteries and all my ins and outs of my power) had stopped working. I thought it was well and truly a 'goner' (Aussie slang for finished!) and that I'd have to go without, but thanks to some really detailed and helpful instructions from Neil our astute electrician, combined with an afternoons hard work, I'm very happy to report that I had a win! With all the tricky little details involved, I can't say that I was that confident that it was going to function. So you should have seen how thrilled I was after replacing the last fuse to see it fire up again!

That's it from me, it's past midnight local time and I'm feeling a little overdue for some shut eye.
Good night!

Jesse

Hi Jesse
another day, another bit of excitement for you - and by association, us!!
Have you been giving any thought about who you would like to play you in the movie - I guess Keira Knightly is a bit old, and frankly it just wouldn't seem plausible seeing her climbing up the mast . . . although, hang on, she has been in all those pirate movies. Keep thinking and I will too.
I guess school's out for you now? or are school holidays different where you are? :) :)

hi Jesse,
For the benefit of the non-boaties following you, you forgot to mention that you repaired the battery monitor while the boat was still bobbing around, being pushed by the wind and the water, some rolling or pitching, jerks here and there. Even in a calm sea it's no easy feat - nothing like doing the same repair job on land with someone at your side. I don't care how astute your electrician is, there's a world of difference between communicating with someone at a distance and having someone right on hand to help.

I don't know if anyone else is tired of saying how brilliant you are, but I'm certainly not. You are just so competent and mature. I'm sure this is not your first time on the planet and you've just picked up where you left off last time. You are way ahead of your years in maturity and ability.

Well done, again! I don't think i can get any more impressed, just impressed to the max over and over again. What the heck are you going to do for an encore? Maybe adjusting to a 'normal' life is the encore.

More fair winds for you.

Jessica,

You are doing just wonderfully well! As I continue to read Webb Chiles 'Storm Passage', an on-line free book, on his solo circumnavigation trip 35 years ago I've come to realize that such a trip is more than an arduous sailing trip with its set of physical problems but also one in which you can find great happiness and peace and be one with the sea and sky. Chiles describes his inner self and the emotions that come with having problems then overcoming them knowing that he faces more. But onward he goes, undaunted, just like you and experiencing great happiness. Believe in yourself Jessica, you can do it. Get rest while you can so you can be mentally sharp for the trials that may come.

Fair winds,

Hey Captain Jesse – talk about full of surprises. I am referring to your mast climb. The last thing I expected (along with many others obviously) is that you would ever climb the mast single handed. One of my previous blogs reiterates a debate I had with a number of male sailors. The thrust of the debate was that a young lady will lack the physical strength to do certain job. I was trying to convince these guys that physical strength does not come from muscle alone, but also comes from within.

Needless to say I was so excited to see what you had done I emailed one of these guys yesterday. He was flabbergasted when he visited your blog to see the photos you had taken atop the mast.

Truly truly extraordinary. GO JESSE

Hi Victor, of course you are not wrong in what you say, but there are some points you seem to have missed, and that makes you look a little grumpy indeed.

Of course, Jessica is not an ordinary 16 yo girl and most of her age pals wouldn't be able to do what she is doing. Precisely, that why so many people are amazed and are following her journey. She is exceptional.

Of course, there are many young mothers meeting daily difficulties, and people are not worrying so much for them. It might be because those are daily worries, lived by thousands. We are sad for them, as for all the human beings starved to death or implicated in civil and religious wars here and there, but that is the sad reality of a very material world; it is not exceptional.

What Jessica brings to us, to the world, is exceptional. She is reshuffling the adventurous spirit, she is proving herself that a dream can be truely lived, and she is showing us that the border between "impossible" and "possible" is not totally hermetic.

She is teaching all (*or almost all?) of us that life is short but really valuable if we live it, if we DO things instead of whining ans complaining. She is the heroes' stuff, that we (or almost all of us) are not. And this huge lesson doesn't come from an old wise statesman or philosopher, it is a gift from a teenager.

The fact she has an incredible talent to share her adventure with others, with her natural words, jokes, telling as well of serious sailing questions as humoristic stories, made that "buzz" around her adventure, and caught hundreds or thousands of minds around the world.

Among them, you can find former, future or virtual sailors, but also all linds of people of all ages, including "adopted" parents and grandparents, just admirative, and who should be allowed to worry sometimes, as they are allowed to be thrilled, enjoyed, or moved by Jessica's news.

The question, as you look like an educated and clever person, is how you couldn't get it by yourself?
Just to give you a personal example: Watching Jessica's way of handling her life, her boat, and her attitude, inspired me enough to change my attitude. I have had for 20 years an overweight problem, that I could never really tackle until now.
I thought that if a 16 yo girl could live for months like she is doing, eating the way she has to, and enjoying it, I would be quite dull if I couldn't do something. So when she rounded Kiritimati, I started eating differently (less, and better chosen things)... 4 weeks ago now, already lost 8 kgs.
And it is incredibly easy, thank to her. When I am offered some soda or alcohol to drink, or some too fat or sugary food, I just say no: "I don't have that aboard by boat".

What nutritionists and doctors couldn't do, she did, because it is inspiring seeing a teenager achieving her (quite high and difficult) goals, while we are keeping the armchairs warm for our pets.
And as her challenge IS a risky one, I think we are allowed to care for her... and even to worry, as her own parents and grandparents sure do. And worrying doesn't mean that we are not confident!!!

Sorry for having been so long. Your entry saddened me a little.

The fascination with Jess from a psychology point of view is others are "projecting" thier inner dream...the dream, courage, and lack of fear of criticism to follow ones dream, the independence, the multiskilling etc. It is a collective projection...all of those in awe of her have all those qualities hidden within them themselves but didn't live it.

So why the anger at that? If she inspires just one person to stand up and follow thier dream then why not!!! :)...it just fabulous!

Hi Jesse,
Glad you were able to fix such a vital piece of equipment! This post of yours was dear to my heart as I am the type of person that was put on earth to repair things. I drive a Volvo older than you that runs like brand new, and work as a computer network administrator. I repaired a printer at work the other day by reflowing the solder on a circuit board in my home oven. My wife gave me puzzled looks.

(For the bloggers that thought it was just a matter of changing a fuse; the fuse was replaced as a last step to power up the repaired device to see if the repair worked. I suspect the repair might have entailed soldering a bad printed circuit, or some such repair. The saltwater environment and electronics have never been happy campers. Doing such work while sitting in the comfy seat going up and down and side to side required a great degree of patience and dexterity. This is another reason Jesse is my hero!)

Knowing that you have a knack for this kind of thing should help some of the bloggers with their "Jesse stress". I am amazed at the people who go out on boats without knowing how to repair them. I guess they just "hope for the best" and call "Sea Tow" when something "goes south". Everyone who owns a boat should read a book like "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrcal Manual by Calder and try to understand all the boat's systems, before entrusting their lives and the lives of their friends to their boat. The marine environment is unforgiving.

Keep on , keeping on!
I can't wait for your next post/picture:
Will it be Jesse waterskiing behind Pink Lady with Parker steering?

Next job, Jess.
Your hair.
We need: 1 pair of SHARP scissors
1 comb
1 hairbrush
1 hairdryer, 12V
1 dorky helmet
1 mirror
1 washbasin
1 towel
Ella Bache Shampoo
Ella Bache Hairstyling
Let's go.
Before the weather closes in and wet hair on deck becomes an unpleasant experience.
1. Wash your hair with Ella Bache Shampoo [I hope they gave you something like that...]
2. Dry your hair lightly, but keep it kind of moist.
3. Comb your hair to hang down evenly, in your face as well, so do not part to the side.
4. Fit dorky helmet
5. Cut with SHARP scissors all excess hair showing from underneath the helmet.
6. Remove helmet
7. Apply Ella Bache Hairstyling.
8. Dry hair with that infamous 12V monster by blowing the hair upwards while brushing.
Result: A cool, practical mushroom type hairstyle, no more stuff hanging in your face and by the time you roll into Sydney it has grown to some bearable length again to face the media scrum in a fashion, that will make your sponsor beam with pleasure...
So..., what are we waiting for ?

Hi Jessica,
Figured I’d drop you line just to give you some moral support, it helps me keeping in touch with you. Looks like your electrical venture was a success and pleased everyone. But most of all that it pleased Ella, she is the important one at this point.
We’re in the middle of a snow storm and right now my area has about 4-6 inches(10-15 centimeters) with more coming. It looks beautiful covering the ground and clinging to all the branches of the trees and covering all the different items laying about. I don’t have to go out in it, but I do feel for the people that have to plow the roads and repair electrical lines and clear fallen trees. God bless them, the unsung heroes.

For Sam (samurai)
Thanks for the heads up on the “tongue in cheek” comment. I for one took it the wrong way. I can usually pick up on funny sarcasm but that one went right over my head. (no hair) My apologies.
I would also like to comment on your fine selection of pics. I enjoyed the 5000nm commemorative pic for Jessica. Tried to blow that up for background but it wouldn’t blow-up on my computer. (Any suggestions??)
I like to collect all the pictures that go along with the posts, and there’s a number of posters that have different selections. I enjoy reading your posts, keep up the good work. Signed up on your website but can’t seem to pull up any posts. (????)

For Joy/Ballarat.
I often wonder how many young people have extraordinary capabilities but are actually being held back. There should be more parents like Roger and Julie. Today’s electronic world that we live in opens many new avenues of learning, and the learning curve (in my estimation) is quicker. So if schools are not up to date in teaching, the student gets bored, and then boredom leads to mischief and then to trouble. Just voicing my opinion.

Well Jessica, take care of yourself and crew and keep on singing as loud as you can, let it out girl.
Always proud of you and always thinking of you.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

On climbing the mast, looks dogy and sound like you discovered your muscle strength is down, as to be expected after that much time of not moving around. I guess not as bad as a spaceman but you can't really get any proper excersise on Pink Lady I guess.

The electrics could have been very inconvient for a fully wired boat like yours. I wonder if you did lose your power you have got a sextant/or similar and paper charts as such in the event you were without power?

Hi fellow blog followers,

Samuri tells us Australians have an expression: "tongue in cheek"

Americans also have an expression: "foot in mouth" you can locate a fine example being discussed in the current collection of comments.

Judging from the literal and figurative meaning of these two expressions, we might conclude that Australians are more tolerant, but you'd have to admit that Americans are more flexible!

Hi Jessica,
I was just sitting here reading the news from all over the world, and it's very depressing. (Mostly)
So I switched over to read the posts in your blog. The lightheartedness is very refreshing. So I thought I'd say hello and see how things are going for you. I hope there's no more maintenance problems, but I know you'll dispose of them quickly. Someone said that you would hit the cape around 01-06-10. I was thinking more like 01-03-10. That's rough figuring but you seem to have good wind and reasonably calm seas, at least up to the 26th of Dec. Any comments on that???

To Hobart Tasmania, the blogmaster is swamped with blogposts and also in a completely different time zone than many around the world. I don't believe the blogs are being checked 24 hours/day, but more like 8 hours/day. Your posts will probably show but sometimes it takes 24 hours, at least. Patience.

To Richard W., a wonderful post from you. Cheers.

By the way..............

Great reply Riche Paris to Victor C. Pankouken"s blog, and very well done to you too on your own personal achievements.

This page is Jessicas. These blogs are for Jess.

Im sure if there was a 91yr old out there achieving a great goal in life Id be blogging their page too and bringing lots of encouragement.
(Just reaching 91yrs old would be an achievement in itself!!)

There are many unfortunate things in life that occur beyond our control which deprive us of attaining certain goals in life.
That should not stop us from encouraging another.

Jess has this opportunity to acheive a goal and I see no wrong in encouraging her.
Call it what you may.

Although years have planning have gone into this adventure, down to the minor detail Im sure every senario has been covered. This adventure is not taken lightly.

We cannot aid Jess physically out there but by hell can sure help her mentally through our "nappy wrapping"

Howdy Jessica,

We have a light inside our globe with a brighter pin point dot that we move around to your approximate location. We live near the Atlantic Ocean here in Maine.

My son just finished up a job working on ships in Alabama and is now making his way home through an Eastcoast winter snowstorm to be with his family for Christmas,

Last night, via cell phone, he told us he was in Virginia traveling on Interstate 81 going 30 miles per hour. I was happy to hear he had a wool blanket, some food and a good supply of water on board his auto.
I thought about the two of you, visualizing you in such different places knowing what it is like being on the ocean and also being caught in a bad snow storm. Our prayers for your safty is upmost in our minds.
God be with you.

Hi Jessica,
And to all fellow bloggers:
Just wanted to pass on some sad news. Laura Dekker, the teenage Dutch sailor is missing. She apparently left home of her own accord, withdrew some money from her account, and left home.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091220/ap_on_re_eu/eu_netherlands_young_sailor
This is not news that I like to pass along, but maybe we could all say a little prayer that she comes to her senses and returns home.

Good Morning Jess

What a gal! News of your electrical prowress made the "News" on TV over the weekend. The whole country is applauding you! Well done girl! And well done to you techo support Neil - you made a great team.

Such a busy weekend here in Sydney. James & I went the CYC yesterday and had a look at the Yachts preparing for the Sydney to Hobart race. The jetty's there were an absolute hive of activity. Lots packing of sails and supplies and everyone seems so excited. James has informed me that next year he is crewing in the race - well he is determined to. I think it's great!! I bought him some boating shoes for Christmas.

Glad to hear that all is well - although a little cooler. Sydney weather is strange one day it's over 40c and the next day it scrapes through for 20c. Weird!

Have a good day Jess - stay safe!

Jessica,

As I slowly read Webb Chiles' 'Storm Passage' about his solo circumnavigation attempt 35 yrs ago aboard his 37' sail boat here's an interesting and humorous situation he encounters. Hopefully, with your modern rigging and auto-steering you won't encounter such a predicament, but if it's possible you may want to start thinking what you would do, he doesn't say what he did:

'The problem is that whenever the storm jib slats, as it must during a jibe, its sheet joins every available line at or near the mast in a knot compared to which that of ancient Gordius was a
mere slipknot. Often this creates the interesting dilemma that I cannot get the boat to self-steer until I clear the knots, and I cannot clear the knots until I get the boat to self-steer.'

Keep sailing woman, you are doing great. Take good care of ELP and she'll take good care of you.

Fair winds,

Steve in California

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to share this excerpt I read in todays news and hope it serves to inspire us all to "do the right thing" and "think before we throw".

I know this is Jessica's page but in view of the fact that 100's of countries read this blog daily, how could I resist. Forgive me Jessica, Team and Fellow bloggers.

"The North Pacific Garbage Patch is an area about the size of Texas full of plastic rubbish to a depth of about six metres. Because of four competing ocean currents which operate in a clockwise direction, the garbage thrown off ships and blown off land has accumulated in a becalmed area in the centre, posing risks to birds and marine life. The area is choked with plastic items, which can be sponges for toxins, varying in size from a kayak to the tiniest wisps of plastic. To the eye as you look across it, it undulates like regular ocean, but when you look down into it, it's just plastic everywhere. It's ocean, but it's kind of like soupy ocean".

Thanks for your time everyne and have a nice day.
