We've had that messy sea and squally conditions for the last few days but the clouds and squalls have well and truly cleared out today, leaving Ella's Pink Lady to fly along in picture perfect trade wind conditions. The trade winds are the name given to the band of steady south easterly winds in this part of the world but what the books don't say is how lovely the sunshine is, how nice it is to have a steady breeze and how amazingly blue the water looks speckled with whitecaps. Maybe it's just that I'm just in a particularly good mood and seeing everything through happy glasses but I don't think it gets much better than this!
On the down side the south easterly trade winds are also a bit of a pain, because south east is exactly where I'd like to be going! We've been able to make some great progress south but we're not getting anywhere when it comes to making ground to the east. Still nothing to worry about because as we go further south the wind will drop off and probably come from a bit of everywhere (this areas known as the variables or subtropics) before settling in from the west when we get down south to the roaring 40's. Bob's latest forecast gives us around another week on this course with similar conditions before we're able to turn on to a more direct line to Cape Horn.
We're now well clear of French Polynesia, actually with the wind we ended up getting, it turned out that we avoided most of the islands and reefs anyway. Other than a few little islands that we are set to pass tomorrow it's just open water between us and Cape Horn, 4380nm of it!
Oh and one thing that I'm sure everyone is quietly wondering, no I'm not at all sick of the pink yet! Ella's Pink Lady's slightly 'out there' color scheme still gives me endless smiles and turned out to be a pretty good colour for the tropics, keeping the cabin cool and making a nice change to the blues and grays which is just about all I see out here! Still I've got quite a while out here yet so I'll keep you posted on just how I feel about pink as time goes on!
Well I'm off to heat up my current favorite Easyfood meal, beef stroganoff for an early dinner and after yesterdays success with some scones I think I might have a go at making some more, maybe with cheese this time.
I'd apologize to all my worried adopted parents for the lack of updates over the last few days but from what I've seen of the latest comments I'd probably get a telling off for that too so I'm just going to keep my trap shut!

Jessica; You just keep on doing what you need to do, and when you have the time and calm conditions, then get around to writing us. I know it is a hard to keep up with bad weather.
It is nice to know that you are in good spirits and making good headway. the 480nm to the horn will go by faster than one would think so. Get your beauty sleep when you can, and have a day or two of moping as the horn is a nasty place to sail through.
Here is a link to one of my favorite sailing songs, to relax by. Kenny Logging and Jim Messina sing it.

Hi Jesse,
Good to hear that you have been doing fine those past 2 days.
We were starting to think of starting to get worried at some point in the near future you know. lol.
Naah. We have faith in your ability to handle every challenge you'll meet, whether nautical, technical, physical or psychological. So, you go on, young lady. You just go on and don't worry yourself about our worries and rants.
Very witty post. made me laugh a lot.
And before you ask, I don't want to be your parent. I believe you have the best sort you could hope for and they are waiting for you to complete your journey and come back home.
I'll be a cousin from a side branch if it's ok with you
Hello Jessica:
My cat Frankie is 5 years old, a fluffy, long haired Siamese cross. Very friendly, and a smart little bugger.
He was sitting beside the keyboard as your crossing-the-equator video played, listening and watching with great interest. Then you dunked yourself with seawater! He was fascinated! He flashed me a wide-eyed look that seemed to say, "OMG, look what she just did!" It's the same look I get when he is watching me in the bath.
There you are, Jessica, thousands of miles away, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and you are entertaining my cat! How nice of you.

You are an inspiration to me. You go girl, You beautiful brave girl.
You will get there, you can be so proud, Take care, hang in there , come home safe, Love and best wishes , XXXOOO.
My god young lady strange Buoys hanging around reefers getting passed all night its a wonder all us parents dont get ulcers dear oh dear young people these days all they want to do is sit around the loungeroom and watch tv no drive no ambition in life LOL go girl live all our dreams GLEN
Jess,
I'll bet you had a few foster mums and Dads worried about you over the last few days. Not knowing the extent of French Polynesia I had visions of your boat dodging coral and dangerous reefs as you navigated through those waters. You don't mention seeing any other boats so I must assume that you were well clear of danger.
In a story in The Courier Mail yesterday (Saturday) we were told that the South East Trades would give you plenty to worry about as you attempt to turn east; going farther south to catch the roaring forties is the obvious way to go.
I was quite touched to read your charming descriptions of your lfe on board your yacht. You are obviously in the place you love best. I wonder how you'll settle down to living on dry land when you return.
All my love and best wishes to you, a fine sailor and a credit to all Australians from
Ian from Brisbane
Go EAST young lady !
See you in Cape Horn !
For you Jess.....keep enjoying!

Hey Jessica,
Following your adventure and hoping all is going well. Don't know much about sailing but it sure seems like a slow way to travel. I also wonder what you do to keep from going nutty.
I know there's work to be done but I'm thinking once you have the wind at your back and the sails are full, what else is there to do? Lastly, make sure you let us know if you see any strange lights above or below the water. I know people will think I'm crazy, but I believe we are being observed by "Beings" who either aren't from this world or not from this time. I would really love to know if you see anything "unnatural" while you are out there.
Big love from Michigan.
We understand that when conditions get sloppy or rough you will have your hands full tending to the boat and yourself and we will be patient until you have time to get us caught up. Your safety comes first!
We're due to get 2 feet of snow here in the mountains of Arizona this week, so we'll be busy keeping ourselves and our 13 animals fed and safe. But we'll be following your progress!

Hello Jess:
Now that it is the Christmas season, do you have any Christmas Lights stored away somewhere??
I know they can draw a lot of power, but I am sure Neptune would enjoy it!!
Congratulations on your progress and stay safe!!!

Hi Jess, just want to add myself to your growing list of followers, its fantastic what you are doing.
A comment and a question, I have just finished Jesse Martin's book "Braveheart", great read but it seems to me you are much better prepared, both in experience and equipment than he was and he made it so don't let the knockers get to you.
He says that the rules state a boat must pass South of the 5 capes, Cape Horn, Good Hope, WA, Tasmania and NZ. From your route plan it does not seem as if you are going to go South of NZ but cut straight North from Tassie to Sydney, whats the situstion with that, have the rules changed or have I got your route wrong?
RichieParis, Dec5,11:15PM:
Please, read the rules. If everybody sends a real Christmas Card onto the boat it will be regarded as loading supplies. Some could end up at the ////// bathroom, have fish wrapped in them or used on the last few miles as leak patches. Furthermore the extra weight will increase drag and slow Jessica's progress down. So, don't worry, be happy and keep posting your wishes in this comment section for ALL of us to share. O.K., enough, go back to you bench spot and keep rowing this support cruiser. One, two, one, two, stroke, stroke,...
Soak it up Jess! My ocean days are long gone, but I wish I was there for an hour or two to share the light, the sounds and the motion.
Good luck with the rest of the voyage. Win, lose or draw, you're an inspiration to today's youth. With your permission I'd like to post a link on my social project website directing my Pachacuti browsers to follow your progress as well.

Jessica,
We are getting our first real snow of the year here in Maine! People are gearing up for Christmas. Lights are decorating houses and trees all around. Ella has her green, red and white lights as well!
Still checking for your blog every morning. Sail safe and love every minute of it!

DON'T FORGET TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH AND NO TALKING TO STRANGE BUOYS!
You are such an inspiration to us all... I do have a question though? I just just wondering what do you miss the most from home and is someone keeping you updated on it? Sport, TV shows, world news etc....
Keep going you're doing such a good job proving everyone wrong!!

Greeting from Wisconsin, I have really enjoyed following your adventure and I will be with you in spirit the rest of the way!!! We are big sailors up here but the ice is going to be here soon. Ice Boating is next. Please stay safe and enjoy every minute. You are special young lady. My grand daughter and I follow you daily!!!

Hi miss Jess, And your adoptive teaches. good going. THINK PINK. Good luck with your Eating and Miss Jess GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU ONCE AGAIN. Really!
Hey Jesse,
I know what you mean about the sea state, sometimes its like glass.
EPL and the blue around would make a great contrast.
I suppose we all get a bit parental, you have to realise its a genetic thing that older people just worry about the smallest things.
eg , when you round the horn you'll have trouble doing your blogs for a few days. All we can do is sit back, wonder and worry.
By virtue of our age it is out right.
By the way your going with your cooking you might wind up on one of these reality shows.
Showing the world how to cook.
Glad things are going well, I expect you'll have a few days you wish would go a little better, but I think with your attitude and constitution you'll do great.
Never get tired of star gazing, there is a world of wonders out there.
Fair winds and following seas.
Angus
I am really inspired by you Jess. I have my own optimist, and I had a great sail yesterday at Worser Bay Beach in Wellington, New Zealand with my friends. My boat is called Tweaky, my friend Penny's is called The Pink Panther, and my friend Alice's is called Cheesy. Thankyou for inspiring me, and I love reading your blog to see how far you've gone.
Jessica,
You inspire! I did make it cross-town to the National Geographic Society (Washington, DC) yard-sale the other day. Now we follow your voyage on old-fashioned 3-D, a globe :-) Can you confirm the South Pacific is not flat.
Gayle, earlier today on your blog, borrowed from us pilots a lifesaving truism: avigate, navigate, communicate, in that order. (Adoptive parents are like air traffic controllers, talk to them when you have time :-)
At your altitude, would that be marinate, navigate and communicate? :-)
Sail on safely,
Christopher and Tippi
S/V Miss Erica
Jessica, I've got this funny feeling that you're going to complete this circumnavigation well ahead of the expected time. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you're back in Australia during April 2010. It will be interesting to see. In the meantime, it is really magnificent to see you're in high spirits and doing well out there!

Hi Jess,
You're hootin' along !! What fun. You are doing so well and glad to hear that the clouds and squalls have cleared out for picture perfect sailing.
When I read that Bob is setting you up for "a more direct line to Cape", got my blood pumping. Let’s go !!
You know my one and only worry for you is 'sleep'. Always opt for some sleep if need be, instead of writing your blog. Look after your most precious commodity. With messy seas and constant tending EPL I imagine that it would run you down some.
Write when you can, we are not going anywhere...everyone knows that you have a bit on. Must go Google Roaring Forties. All I know about them is people use to dance the Charleston and wear lots of pearls? Have fun Jess, thanks for the update.
The meaning of “PINK”
Pink is the colour of universal love. Pink is a quiet colour. Lovers of beauty favour pink. A pink carnation means "I will never forget you".
Pink is a combination of red and white. The quality of energy in pink is determined by how much red is present. White is the potential for fullness, while red helps you to achieve that potential. Pink combines these energies.
Pink provides feelings of caring, tenderness, self-worth and love, acceptance.
Been following ya since the start. Even got you marked off on Google Earth! My daughter and I sail modestly and hae watched you with excitement. I also love to listen to HF Radio. Can you say when you talk (Australia time) and what freq?
God Speed out there!
Thanks for the wonderful update (as always).
Stay safe

My how it warms my heart to hear that you're continually happy with what you're doing. Of course you'll have minor setbacks but I know in my heart that you'll have a happy and successful voyage. On the other hand, you've ruined my life. In the past I could travel and enjoy life, now I must stay home to check your progress each day. I spend each day, awaiting the time that your blog will appear. How miserable my life has become. I've neglected my yard work, my household duties and mostly, I've neglected my wife. Jesse, you now owe me a visit when you come to the U.S. after your voyage. A visit to my home will pay your debt for completely and utterly destroying my life.
Godspeed sweet girl. I marvel at what you're doing.

Love your blogs and the photos. I have put them all together in a Powerpoint presentation with your updated position. I am still racing you to have my verandah finished before you return so we can sit out there and celebrate as we watch you come through Sydney Heads.
Una and I are 63 and 70 respectively and check on you every day.

was getting worried but happy now. Even if on your blog you say Hi I am good
good morning Jess - I am writing from a wheat and sheep farm in west australia. Our family is following your trip and are thrilled at your adventure . The view we have from the window of our world of golden crops and vivid skies is much different to yours. You have sea birds we have sheep dogs ! Keep looking at the world through your happy glasses you are a wonderful example to your generation.
Cheers Susie
hi jesse, i'm just an old guy from new brunswick Canada. yes we know about you over here.i have been following your progress and reading the blogs since day one and you have no idea how i wish i could do something as exciting as what you are about to accomplish. from what i have been reading, rounding the cape will be pretty challenging but i have the utmost confidence that you can handle it. keep up your spirits and the blogs. i am with you all the way. luck. john
Good on you Jess,
Yes, I rank as an adoptive parent (I do have two beautiful daughters of my own 18 and 21 years of age) and do worry...not so much about you being out there on your own (I believe that this trip has been set up very well taking all possible scenario's into consideration) but more about how you are managing.
I tell you what - in reality, not only are you managing brilliantly but you are teaching a few of us old fogies a thing or two about mental strength and resilience.
Stay strong young lady.

Hey Jess, I've not made a comment on here before today, but I've been checking your progress and reading your blog everyday and LOVING it!

Is there some reason for not providing a factual tracker similar to your fellow teen aged navigators Sutherland and Perham, that provides date, position and distance made good. This has always been the favored method to evaluate progress of a sailing venture.
G'day Jess,
Keep that adventureous spirit of yours shining and guide us all with the light of your inspiring journey.
I'm sure for your schoolmates it's 'same old' back home. Enjoy every moment of your experience and sapere aude!

Hello Jessica,
I loved your description of the nice weather and beautiful sea that you are experiencing. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a picture to go with it. Your last comment about the worry warts was funny. I get the same stuff from my family and friends all the time when I am flying my airplane. I just wish for once someone would tell me to be careful when I am driving a car...now that is dangerous! LOL
BLUE SKIES Jess...

Hi Jessica,
Was just thinking about you so I decided to drop you a line. Hope you are having good weather and smooth sailing. Passage Weather always makes it look good but they don't mention anything about the squalls or storms. That makes it confusing, but I guess if the waves aren't to high and the wind isn't to strong, then that should indicate fairly smooth sailing.
Have you been doing any schoolwork lately? I hope so.
I’ve been over some more of your video’s and I still am impressed by your calm, matter of fact attitude that you present. If the media doesn’t rattle you, what would? Good for you!!!
Take good care of yourself and Ella, stay clipped on, healthy, safe and alert. Always proud of you and always thinking of you.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

We just had our American Thanksgiving Day here. (Week or so back)The Pilgrims which came here took 3.5 months to cross the Atlantic. I saw a replica of that "boat" as a kid near Boston. 90 or so ft long. 100 people or so....I just thought of that. :)

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
Sounds like it all turned out well for you. Well done, you're doing great work. After the lumpy seas and squally conditions you've had over the last few days, what a bonus to find yourself inadvertently avoiding most of the islands and reefs that you expected would keep you on your toes.
You paint such a wonderful mental picture for me in describing the steady breeze, the blue water speckled with whitecaps and a cute little pink boat flying along in the midst of it all. I love that you chose pink and can't imagine an alternative colour. For one, it makes for a beautiful contrast to the blues and greys around you.
Have you been trying to catch any more fish? If you have and haven't had anything "worth writing home about" or at least a bite or a nibble, I'm quite surprised. I would have thought you'd be on good fishing grounds on the waters around French Polynesia.
Anyway, for you I say, bring on the empty sea and I hope you enjoy every moment of it as you approach the roaring 40's.
Take good care of yourself, stay safe and bye for now...Sam
anonymous who posted at 9.53am Dec 6th, regarding a suggestion made by another blogger......
and a great suggestion too I might add!.....
"Would you eventually provide, for all of us, fellow bloggers and adopted parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, friends, a postal address (maybe a postal box?), where we could all send a greetings card for Xmas and the New Year to Captain Jesse?"
....doesn't mean a mail drop directly to the Pink Lady. He's referring to a actual post office box or something near her parents home here in Queensland, where cards could be sent to and then Jess can read them when she gets back home.
A great idea!!
Again a reminder.......Jess actually talks to her parents once or twice a day via satellite phone, so even if we don't hear from her it doesn't mean she's disappeared from contact.
I'm sure we would hear about it if her parents were concerned about her. Channel 10 news here in Brisbane are closely affiliated with Jess and her family and would be broadcasting any concerns on their news.
Jess, you are doing great! I love reading your blogs.
Smooth sailing...........

To "Anonymous" Dec 6 9:53am who was critical of your suggestion, they obviously missed your original post whereby you stated "it would be lovely for Jess to read them once back on land".

Hey, I'm still keeping ya in prayers Jess. You're an amazing person.
You'll always have the "overly protective" people out there who care for ya, but that can't be avoided. But you knew that though right? :D
Hope to see ya safe return in several months from now.
Stay safe and God bless.
Hey Jessica and mrs pink ladie:
Just wanted to say that I have been following you from the states and we always say a prayer for you at night. I think what you are doing going around the world is just awsome and my family wishes you the best. If you find time I do have a question how many battery's do you have on board and are they charged by solar only? Good luck and thank you for blogging.

Jess! I read your last blog and knew you were ok. Then I lost the net until now. Was only worried after 3 days of not hearing anything from you incase you were cheating or sitting around a pool sipping martini's on one of them islands. Just kidding! I thought the worst and I know your alone out there. Your adopted parents are all the good Australians who are as proud of you as they are your real parents. Your adopted family is all the great people of the world that you are inspiring. We know that your working hard and I know that things can get tough out there. Unfortunately you, your real parents and the Government don't have a say on who your adopted parents are. The Government works for us and we just want to know your ok. If for some reason there was red tape from holding up our fastest jets and the military to get to you we would like to know what it is and what's the hold up. If you only say "Hey" if you haven't the time or don't want to say anything after a couple of days, I probably wouldn't bang into stuff with my bob cat. Take care Jess.
Ps. Did your Nan really leave a tooth brush in that Toblorone? That's funny. Cruel but funny. It'd almost make me want to call it all off and go home :)
Good going! It is lovely to hear from you again. Still tracking your progress and excited with you as you move on towards the next goal! Dora and Rachel

Just heard about you from a sailing friend. Absolutely awesome, girl!!
I love that your boat is pink! The pictures of it are gorgeous and really make it pop against the blues, greens, and grays. =)

Keep up the great sailing and have a wonderful Christmas
Hi Jessica,
What an awesome adventure you're on. They were talking about you on a radio station here in Dallas Texas and I immediately had to see how you were doing. I watched the movie "Deep Water" last summer about the 1st solo round the world race and thought of how much of a challenge such an adventure would be. I can't believe you're taking on such an adventure at such a young age. Best of luck to you, i'll be reading your blog weekly and can't wait to hear more of your adventure! Safe Sailing.
