Amazing Sunset

Mostly it's just been a normal day out here, not a lot of wind but just enough to keep us moving on a gentle sea at a steady 5 knots.
Tonight's sunset was far from normal though, it was amazing! I thought it was good to start with, but then the colours just kept getting better and better as the sun disappeared. And yes I captured some pics (below) to capture the moment and colours. Hope you like them.

Well it's just going to be a quick update for today as my tummy is telling me I'm way overdue for some food!

Jesse

Pic 1: An amazing sunset in the background

Pic 2: Ella's Pink Lady also enjoyed the sunset!

I found your video shoot of Wednesday 9th today. Unless I missed it earlier, your shoot was not transmitted for a week after you shot it. Undoubtedly there were good reasons for the delayed transmission.

It was fantastic seeing you so in control and looking "smashing".

Hi there Miss Jessica,

We continue to enjoy following your trip via your blog, the gorgeous pics, the videos, and the tracker ... that is very visual and really shows how quickly you are making your way to the Horn.

We have been reading Dallas Murphy's book "Rounding The Horn" over the late few months on Sunday mornings on our boat ... before we head out for a sail through Sydney heads. The stories of adventurers, explorers, missionaries, sealers, the naked natives, curious sailors, and warring fleets, over hundres of years have been amazing to hear about. Of course they have mostly been men and they certainly haven't been 16 year olds!!

We were telling some people about you last night (and referred them to your website) and I heard about their old dad who was an English sailor and used to sail on the old windjammers in the dying days of trade taken on sailing ships around the Horn ...they said he always spoke reverently about it ...so how exciting for you to be heading towards that significant island group/land mass.

What's on the menu as you get into rougher seas??? I hope lots of soups and stews to keep you warm and fueled up.

Will be interesting ot hear about bird life as you get closer down to the land mass again too...

Ciao Bella!!

Gabrielle, Sydney

Jesse,
That's a very nice video. [Ella Brache is certainly getting her (their?) money's worth!]

I marvel at the thought that you are so far out on the South Pacific yet looking, sounding, and writing as if there were nothing to it. You're making the circling of our planet look far too easy!

By all accounts, you're thriving on the adventure and we can only chalk that up to your own qualities, including those inner resources that you have revealed to us in your blogs and your graceful manner.

I feel fortunate to witness your addressing of the marvelous challenge that you have taken on and for the peeks you provide into that inner world that's helping you thrive out there.

I gather you're reaching now, still on port tack. So you must be on your Great Circle to the Horn.

Hi Jessica,
Don’t know exactly where you are, but the 40s are looking a little nasty, but knowing you, you’ll probably enjoy them. Anywhere from 3m to 8m waves. I guess that’s not really to bad for you, but total fear for me. LOL……
Not much happening up here in WV. Kind of a gloomy day, radio is talking about some rain and possibly some snow. Just might have a white Christmas. That would be nice.
I forgot to mention that the link I sent to you has a picture of “Silly” that really came out good.
Janell passed them on but it was “Pez” (the fellow that made your Equator Certificate) that had originally put them together. He did a great job on them.
I still enjoy watching them along with numerous other video’s that I have been able to collect about you.
Hope you have everything under control (no doubt) and you’re eating and sleeping as much as possible.
Take care and stay tethered.
Always proud of you and always thinking of you.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi,Jessica,
Thanks for your recent video, along with your recent pics. your adoptive world family are up to date.
The sunset picture's where outstanding, great for us in the northeast USA going into our winter months.
I also have a question about the ''tube '' behind you in the video,as a past old sailor I will assume it's part of your drain system from your deck spray!!!Yes,I could be wrong too.
Starting to get news on the ''Sydney to Hobart''warm up trials, boy I wish I could be their off ''Shark Island''on a spectator boat to watch it all,I guess it will be a great sight, just like your future return to the ''Sydney Heads'',would give a million to fly the long distance to be there.
It is nice to hear you have been able to get the ''pink lady'' and yourself ready for upcoming day's heading south to the Cape.
What's been on your menu lately?
That's all for now ''young lady'',remember the ''world'' is pulling for you and the ''Gods'' are watching you daily, keep a positive outlook and be strong, you are but an admiration to us all.
God speed, stay safe and enjoy each day as an adventure in your life you can't replay.

For those inquiring, and the curious;

Dodger :
The structure providing Jessica partial protection from the harsh weather and seas. It covers part of the cockpit and the entrance [or "companionway"] into the interior of EPL.

The little tube draining water in the background of Jessica’s latest video, located at the top of the dodger is part of the fresh water catchment system intelligently built into the dodger and is designed to capture fresh rain water from the top of the dodger whenever it rains and sea water isn't breaking over the deck and dodger. Jess mentions this briefly in the past when she detailed her water allotment and provisions. EPL’s main sail can be used to convey copious amounts of fresh rain water as well. Clever isn’t it? I imagine Jess left it open and draining in the video to demonstrate it in action.

Thanks Jess for another fine video!

Hi Jesse,

Thank for sharing those pics with us.
I had a little chance to think of you today: I picked up a full truck load of chocolate, today.(all sorts, plain, milk, nuts&fruits, 20 tons of it!!) and I took a minute to think of a little pink hull in the middle of the South Pacific, and her captain.

Take care

Hi,Jessica,
Waiting with baited breath with an update.
I trust you are doing ok,I assume no news is good news, your you are busy winds and seas, keeping ''Pink Lady''up to speed and not healing too far over.
I always check in daily for your news and your ''Teams'' updates.
I am a little disappointed the ''ABC web site'' has not put out more news stories since your departure, hope they can change that, you deserve all the exposure during your adventure.
Still awaiting to hear back from ''Santa'' his arrival to you on the 24th.,I guess he is getting some water skids for his sled and life jackets for his Reindeer Team.
That's all for now, stay safe and sail true.
Hugs to you and your ''Stuffy Crew'',

P.S.I was in a local mall and bought an ornament for an Angel Xmas Tree and put your name on it in your honor so others can read and take on some interest in your adventurer.

I have been looking over a bunch of photos of EPL from various sites and also wonder what the water discharge is in the upper starboard corner of the hard top dodger. The photos seem to indicate that the dodger top (that holds a solar panel) might have a bit of a lip that caught water and the discharge was a drain, but the discharge tube (pipe? fitting?) is on the starboard SIDE of the dodger, aft of the port light and just before the grab handle molded into the dodger. Most of the photos are taken port side to OR long shorts of the starboard side, so its hard to see any fitting in that area. The water probably just drips outboard of cockpit combing but...yeah, I wonder too "What is that thing?"

Here are some links to EPL photos that other might like to see:

For the Shore Crew,
Thanks for the update, I’m glad we didn’t know ahead of time what she was about to do. You would have been flooded with mail and the rest of us would have had a nervous breakdown. LOL……..
I recall seeing pictures of Jessica climbing the mast, but never actually thought about her doing that on the open seas.
Really glad that she accomplished her mission and that there was no chafing or wear and tear.
I’m glad she had plenty of training for this procedure, since the boat would be in motion and the motion at the top of the mast would be multiplied many times over. She, no doubt, had one hell of a ride. 12 meter = 39.37 feet. I need a mathematician. Can someone calculate that to see what kind of a swaying span she would have at that height depending on the action of the water below. Can that be done?
Yes, I’m sure all you guys breathed a sigh of relief when she called.
God Bless Her, she is one hell of a girl!!!!!
Looking forward to the next blog and her casual description of what she just accomplished. LOL…….
Thanks again to you guys and girls on the shore crew.
Keep up the good work and bring her home safely.
You are all in my prayers.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE SHORE TEAM FOR THE UPDATE - YOU MUST BE SOOO PROUD..

Hey Jess
Great to hear your mast climb went well and that extra boost of confidence knowing the rigging is standing up well and no chafe on the sails - incredible really after 6000nm.

I did a mast climb once in the marina (using bosuns chair) and even in the marina it was scarey, so I take my hard hat off to you !!!! well done. The higher you get up the mast the more it swings and i imagine what it would have been like. Good girl for all of your safety precautions as you are the captain AND first mate !!!!! Im very very proud of you.

Well its full steam ahead now into the 40's - i am hoping you will have favouable conditions, however you are as prepared as any sailor can be, just take it one step at a time, like another blogger said previous, its a good thing to pre-empt what might come your way. Most important is rest, good energy food and dont get dehydrated (in the cold its easy to forget to drink water!). Youre just THE BEST JESS, one step at a time, we are all with you on this next leg. Your fluffy crew are cheering you on too.
Take Care - fair winds !

So..are you an early riser? Do you love sunrises just a much as sunsets? Are you still adding fish to your diet? Have you decorated for Christmas? I just rewatched your videos, and trekked the map up and down scale..I've pin pointed you about as close as I can by eye-balling it..great in horse shoes and handgrenades but no so much for charting a course...I did note your Voyage site says 'stay tuned for a new blog..so I did..right after the rehearsal..g'night miss waves.. the word verification is 'premouse' sounding like an odd substitute for premises or whatever the cat had for a snack..

Wow, SIMPLY FANTASTIC! What a great post on The Latest News. Jessica's climb up the mast to check the equipment for chafing is such an achievement. Good going, Jess.

Thank you, Shore Team, for updating us as to Jess's latitude and her focus on preparations for colder, more challenging weather.

Jess is a trooper and we are all blessed to be riding along with her.

May Divine Light be with you all as this Incredible Journey continues.

With deep appreciation and love,

Hi Jesse
Wow, climbing a 12 metre mast swaying about in the wind. What sort of stuff are you made of girl? A 2 metre stepladder is high enough for me.
Maybe you should be called SUPERJESS!

Good evening, Jessica. So enjoyed the pics, and wow, what a treat to read the latest news post and appreciate what you've just been through. What planning and preparation, what courage. And now you're actually in the 40s! Wow! Great stuff. Today before catching the news update I was praying for your strength and health, and of course for all the good equipment on EPL. Will continue to do so through tomorrow. I know your family was so grateful to hear that you had descended that mast and were back on deck all safe and in one piece. Great work! I will pray for your ability to stay rested, too.

Hi Jessica and shore team
Thanks for the update, it's nice for all us worry warts to know all is well with Jesse.
It's good to know that Jesse has completed the mast climb with no problems, I'm sure most people wouldn't know what it's like to do this task. I only have done this in the safety of the marina and with help, so to do it in the open ocean and by yourself just shows the skill and courage of this young girl, well done.
Now I think we are all in for some great sailing posts over the next few weeks, with some southern ocean sailing to come, I think we may see some 150nm plus days, could even see a 200nm day?
So keep having fun, keep safe and great sailing.
Cheers George Simmons

Hi Jessica,
First of all I’m just glad to read that you have your feet safely planted on deck. Tell me Jessica, did you enjoy the ride up there?????
I was glad that your little (?) venture was successful and no chafing or wear and tear was found.
As I mentioned to the Shore Crew, I was glad that we didn’t know ahead of time what you were going to do, they would have been swamped with mail and we all would have had a nervous breakdowns. LOL……….
I recall a picture I had seen of you when you were up a mast and had a grip on the lines with your toes. Pretty good trick. LOL…….
Take care of yourself and the crew. You deserve a rest and something warm in your tummy. Eat well and don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
Always proud of you and always thinking of you.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

read the latest news, Jesse. Nice to year that you've moved up in the world. Could you see Cape Horn from the top of the mast? (lol)

guess the honeymoon is over now that you're crossing 42 south. The hardest part of this challenge is nearly upon you.

Are you ready for it?

YES YOU ARE.

I'm 71 and I've read many books in my time. But following your blog is reading a book as it being written--a completely new experience.

And all your bloggers' comments are like the footnotes.

Thanks Jessica. Thanks my fellow followers. This is unforgetable.

G'day Jessica.

Glad your doing well from reading your blogs. The photos look good of the sunset over the sea as well.

Canberra has had some fairly warm to hot days in the last week with temperatures of about 39deg C today going by the weather on the news. At the moment it seems like we are going to have a cool change with some rain at about 3AM on Friday morning with a little storm from the way it looks at present.

Not long before Christmas either...just to let you feel more at home I am working on Christmas day as well in an aged care facility looking after some elderly residents needing assistance.

I think this time of year bushfires around Australia seem to crop up so emergency personal will most likely be spending Christmas fighting fires as well. Why we don't use our cooler climates to prepare for our warmer climates always baffles me...but that's life.

Take care and stay focused,

Pete. (Canberra).

What are you going to do when you come home again here to Queensland? Your only way you can top this is go to the moon solo! I am gobsmacked, very impressive! Godspeed.
