Northern Hemisphere

No change that I can see. The water is still blue, the waves are still rolling and the wind still blowing, but apparently now the water splashing across the deck and slipping away behind Ella's Pink Lady, is northern hemisphere water!

I couldn't have asked for a better day to cross the equator, flat seas,15knots of wind and sunshine. We crossed the line at 2017 utc doing 5 and a half knots and celebrated with the usual toast to Neptune, the traditional dunking in salt water and plenty of excited phone calls. I also had a few presents stashed away, especially to open for the occasion. They were mostly chocolate which turned out to be very melted! Neptune was toasted with fruit juice and plenty of chocolate. I'm not normally one to toss good chocolate into the sea, but I figured that this was my chance to get myself into Neptune's good books. I'd hoped that my generous offering might by rewarded with a fish on my line but no such luck!

I thought that crossing the line would be just like any other day out here, so I surprised myself a little by getting a bit emotional as I juggled three different cameras while counting down the latitude read out on the GPS. It's not so much physically crossing into the northern hemisphere that had me so worked up (you can only get so excited about an invisible line in the water!!) but the fact that it meant the end of the first leg. Sure this has probably been one of the easier legs (call it the shake down!) compared to some of the sailing down south to come. But the distance we've already covered is pretty amazing. Getting this far (and everything that happened before the start line!) has given me the confidence to know that even though we've got some seriously tough times ahead, we're going to be able to have fun tackling whatever comes our way.

Great sailing overnight again so we're well into the northern hemisphere and well on our way to Kiribati Island which we might be rounding by late tomorrow. It's been a slightly eerie feeling with overcast conditions all day but I think it was more my imagination than anything and Ella's Pink Lady has made steady progress, so I can't complain.

After all the celebrating and fun yesterday I got back into a few jobs today (not that jobs and maintenance aren't fun too!). I'm sure keeping on top of even the slightest little potential problem will pay off in the end and keeping busy keeps me more than happy.

We've finally got a bit of a moon out here this evening, I'm not sure about dinner yet but I'm thinking of attempting some kind of apple crumble with stewed fruit for dessert. A bit of ice-cream on top would go down pretty nicely too but maybe it's better not to think about that!

Thanks to everyone for all the congratulations. Sounds like plenty of people had a great time celebrating on my behalf as well! But I still say the credit all goes to Ella's Pink Lady and the amazing team that got her to the start line. I'm just along for the ride!

Jesse

Hi Jess, Im sitting in my office at a dusty mining camp in the middle of the never never, cursing the wind as it brings the dust, hahaha silly me.
I have a daughter your age at home and young ladies not that much older here at the mine operating the large earth moving equipment. i am constantly amazed at the "can do" attitude of young women in this day and age, if you ever want a job give me a call.
Gods speed.
PS: I shall ask the camp cook for apple crumble and ice cream tonight.

Hi there Jessica! My name is Gabe and I was wondering what it would be like to sail around the world in one of the many great dicussions that my family has had. We thought that you are really brave. Do you think it will be worth it in the long run? I've taken sailing lessons myself and thought it was fun. I hope it is fun for you. I guess it is really lonely out there on your own. I don't think that I would be able to stand it.

Congats on crossing the equator Jess, you are traveling so well and I am so very much in awe of what you are doing, the best I ever managed was sailing a minnow around in the safe waters of Port Phillip Bay.

I love reading your blog, you display a maturity beyond your years and you should be so proud of yourself.

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well. I've just watched your latest video and thought how great it was to hear your laughter. It looked beautiful out there, like you had perfect sailing conditions while you were shooting the video. The boat seemed to be moving along very nicely and comfortably, not much of a swell and no whitecaps. Nice to see you keep a very tidy ship too, with the jib sheet neatly coiled over the starboard winch. I love your pink bucket.
Oh how I wish you would catch a fish soon. As you get closer to the island perhaps. A tuna or dorado (mahi-mahi) would be very nice indeed. Mahi-Mahi is my favourite eating fish ever. They're also great to catch and boy!...do they move. Apparently they're one of the (if not the)fastest swimmers in the ocean. It takes some skill to catch one if you've never caught one before but well worth the effort as they are, in my opinion, very nice to eat. They have a ditinct nutty taste I think and are just superb. I used to catch them off the FADs (fish attraction devices) over to the west of Rottnest Island, Perth WA.
Oops, enough about fishing...sorry.
I hope you enjoy your time in the northern hemisphere, rounding the island and crossing the equator again. Then you'll be well on your way to your next challenge. Take good care of yourself. Stay safe and bye for now...Sam

Hi Jesse,

Thanks again for your latest post. It's good to hear that you are still making good progress.

I hope Neptune enjoyed your melted chocolate, if not, I am sure there are now a few fish with chocolate addictions. And of course you haven't caught any fish, they weren't nibbling on your line because they are all probably full of chocolate.

I can understand you being a little emotional when crossing the line, after all, not only is it a big achievement completing the first leg of your challenge, but it is also your first time into the Northern Hemisphere!

And you are allowed to get pretty excited occasionally, after all, you have a long way to go, and you are showing us all that you are very level-headed, responsible, and ensuring that Ella gets looked after. I am sure Ella will reward you in return!

We have a huge electrical storm last night, it stuck around Newcastle for about 3 1/2 hours, meaning that I could not get online and post my comment last night.

Take care, my best wishes for continued smooth sailing are with you.

Hi Jess, I love reading your blog, keep it up.

Just want to say that I have experienced a similar adventure - 145 days out when I was 25...but I was with a friend, however - you've probably heard this before, but it's not about the Destination! It's about the journey.

I can assure you, when you get back home, you will miss those nights of total peace and quiet, the blanket of stars overhead like nothing else. You will even dream that you are back out there! So enjoy every moment while you can. You've been blessed to be able to do this - keep up the good spirits and enjoy each day!
All the best,

Hi Jessica,
Just checking up on you, making sure your behaving yourself. I know about those wild birds flying around out there. Silly didn’t happen to come back yet, did he? I’ll have to have a little talk with him. Presuming he’s a him.
King Neptune, he knows how much you like chocolate and that it was a sacrifice on your part, so he said “And verily I say unto thee, for this sacrifice yee shall be rewarded tenfold….go fish”. LOL……
Hey, that’s what it’s all about, to have a good time. I laughed myself simple after I typed that. Maybe I was simple before I typed it. Old age and solitary living will do that to ya. LOL….
Ohhh my.
Did you hear about the new cruise ship the Oasis of the Sea? It is gigantic, it weighs 225,282 tons, is 1187ft long has a speed of 22.6 Knots, carries a crew of 2165 and has room for 6296 passengers. It has sixteen (16) decks and 2000 cabins. And it cost a cool $1.4 billion. It’s so big that it’s limited as to what ports it can enter. At this time, it’s in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hi Jesse,

Fancy being in the northern hemisphere !! Wow. Make sure you don't get an accent up there !! te he ha ha.

You and your support crew must feel excellent and no doubt are looking toward the second leg with enthusiasm.

Important one this one. "everest sailing" as you say. For a land lover, that sounds quite vomitious. You will do it easily.

I can tell, by your writings, that you are just hanging out to tackle this part of the trip and will enjoy action/extreme sailing most days. I am excited for you.

I have also seen many photos of Cape Horn very calm and pleasant.
And even if the Cape does a little dance, you and EPL will dance with her, in harmony.

Would love to hear from your support crew, your Mum and Bob again.
(no doubt Bob is thinking about all the weather, not just the Cape)

Speak to you tomorrow, till then take care. We are with ya.

GO GIRL!

Yeh! And thank you so much for your lovely comments re the Traveston Dam getting ditched. My folks live there & they were stoked.

Hope you get to catch more fish without the big ones eating 'em first! LOL Keep us all up to date with your royal progress and stay safe. We're all thinking of you back home and wishing you happy travels.

Hi Jesse,
Captain Cook here. As you know, I am a brilliant navigator. A few notes for you: Firstly congratulations on going to the wrong side of the world. Secondly, I am glad to see that you are heading away from those dreadful Sandwich Islands. I believe the trendy term now is Hawaii. Stay well away young girl. I went there once and I can't remember a thing. Natives did dreadful things to me which might explain my advanced state of decomposition. On my new fangled charts you are only 3 inches south of those damned islands. As a great navigator, I do not worry about scale on a chart. just believe me you are doing the right thing by turning away from them. The buggers can't be trusted.

Greetings to you, Jessica, out in the Central Pacific! I really get nervous when I wake up, have a moment outdoors with our 12-year-old son's almost 8 weeks border collie-Aussie puppy, make the coffee, turn on the Mac--only to find no posting from you and EPL! Of course I worry. So I check out your weather on http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/ for Kiribati and surrounding seas.

I'm a bit relieved about conditions where you are, (1/2 way between Northern Nevada and Sydney, Australia) despite shoals, reefs, and such, but amazed at the east-west band of horrid weather to the north of you from California to Japan! Good thing you're heading south soon. Are you going to set a course toward Hiva Oa in the Marquesas or another heading?

OK, Mom, we need another post from you or one of the team to let us know how Jess is, what the shore crew is up to, etc. Signed, a mom in Northern Nevada, USA

I haven't read recent posts yet so I'm not sure if this has already been covered...

We've all been asking about what music Jessica likes to listen to...well she's given clue in her latest Dunking Video....it's

Linkenpark.....and the song is...
"What I've Done"...am I right am I right or am I right??????????

The Video Clip is pretty dynamic...in fact not bad at all...

Okay....we've had lots and lots and lots of rain fall this weekend, up to 50mm here in Melbourne...I know something about too, I did my 20th Running of the Olympic Dream Fun Run today...its just 10K...but it rained all the blasted time!....I dedicated it to you Jess....the Jessica Run...everybody who finishes gets a medallion this year commemorating Kerryn McCann, one medal for finishing the event and a gold medal for those who have completed 20 years, I have them hanging off the Ships clock and Barometer of which we have a picture of you sticky taped to the wall in between them!...

I note you're on your way South....are you going to give yourself a "second" dunking as you cross the equator again???....I'd love to see you do that again...just be'en cheeky.

I'm also impressed with the way you think ahead...I think we've all become aware of your sense of maturity of understanding the sea....

I wondered if you had DVD's on board...well now we know, now we have to guess what your favorite movies are!

We're watching the latest Harry Potter film on Blue Ray on the theater system...a 4 meter screen!....normally its called the Wall!

Well I realize I'm way way down the list tonight...but I hope you get a chance to scan my post and confirm Lindenpark.....

Sixty Minutes had a quick report on you tonight too....

Cya Jess....you know you're probably three days away from Hawaii...next time huh?

Dear Jessica,
I love your blogs and videos.
Best of luck as you approach Cape Horn, which I understand is the most dangerous part of your journey.
There was an article about Kiribati in "The Age" on Saturday telling of how it could become submerged by rising seawater.
What movies and music do you carry?
