Finally a Fish!

Yes I'm more than a little pleased and very relieved to report that I finally got a fish! (see pic below). That was starting to get a bit silly. My best guess is that it's a yellow fin tuna, its not huge but I'm sure that there will be plenty for everyone! I can't say that there would be many fisherman who would be proud of the mess I made filleting it. I'm just glad there was no one here to witnesses the whole thing, but practice makes perfect right?!

Turns out that wasn't my last tack last night. The wind and current weren't going to make things easy for us, so it was a particularly sleepless night as we tacked and inched along ever so slowly.

Every time I thought that we'd finally cleared the Island, the wind would change slightly and we'd have to put another tack in. It's all a bit frustrating but as always it's hard not to feel cheerful when the stars are shining and the music's turned up.

I spent a lot of the day on deck enjoying the shade from the sails and trying (without much success!) to give the stainless a polish up. Also I've been noticing quite a bit chafe on the windvane lines (not to worry I've got plenty of spares) so have been playing around trying to stop some of the chafe. It's a good reminder of the way Parker is constantly working. There's always something to keep me busy, whether it's wiping the salt crystals off the solar panels, replying to an email or trying to keep up with the house work (boatwork?!) side of things.

There's been a lot of birds around again and I've really been enjoying listening to them call out to each other as they swoop low around Ella's Pink Lady. It made me think about all the other land noise that I haven't heard for so long and that made me a little home sick. But I know as soon as I do get back to land, that I'll miss the constant noise of the water along the hull and all the little creaks and groans as Ella's Pink Lady sails along.

When I checked my emails this morning I found a very serious email from my clearly worried Mum, telling me to watch out for all those 'boys' - I think they could have seen me rolling my eyes from space!

I'd love to write more but it's time for some fun in the galley and the long awaited fish and chips!

Jesse

Good Job! I'm so happy you passed your next land mark and are now around the equator! Hope the northern hemisphere is treating you well! So glad you caught a fish as well! That would make some wonderful fish and chips. I hope you catch more soon, although not too much bigger! If you are getting home-sick for sounds, try listening online to one of those "city noises" tapes, pretty soon you will be happy not to be there! lol, but seriously, I am sorry that you are feeling homesick, but you will be home before you know it! Good luck and fair winds!

Very proud of all you have achieved over the last couple of days..I watched your videos too, good to see you cooking and getting the salt water dunking - the pink pudding would have been amusing but maybe alittle messy. :)
Anyway enjoy your day and as always looking forward to your next post..xo.

Congratulations Jess on catching your first fish. What a beauty! Are you carrying a ciguatera test kit? If not, here's a tip. The late great American sailor Peter Sutter who spent most of his life sailing the Pacific on his 34 foot yacht Wild Spirit told me he always tested any tropical reef fish he caught for ciguatera by placing a silver coin under the fish. If the coin turned black the fish was toxic!

WOW...Jessica, I'm proud of you, what a fine looking fish! Yum,tuna is healthy and tasty, should make for a good meal, even though your fish cleaning was not so good, it still made you a good meal.
AH...doing a little maintenance and polishing, with good music.
It's the music, Pink Lady and you that makes those birds just hang out, they know when they have good company around.
Keep doing what you have been and the sailing will be just fine.

Another Jessica Poem

And Now I Sail

So there we go across that line
And Island marker left behind
Her nose again to South we poke
I get to gain new Neptune cloak

I’ll rap myself in his wet faith
Whilst planning next new ocean race
I know her trembles beneath my feet
We meld as one where mariners meet

My yacht and I have come together
So far no breaks, no need to tether
I treat her with a caressing hand
We both in each, we understand

So now my trip gets underway
To southern latitudes, we’re off to play
The winds they’re called, the Southern Trady
I have all faith, my Ella’s Pink Lady

Hey Jesse,

Nice fish! But where is the happy, excited face revealing your first success? I bet you enjoyed the fish 'n' chips, under the stars, floating disco, all the boys chasing you (but don't let your mum know!).

Can't say I have ever filletted a fish myself. When I catch my fish, they are already nicely filletted and crumbed, Park View Take Away in Swansea is about the best fishing place that I know of! LOL

It's good to see that you are doing some "real" sailing now, tacking all over the place. Must be more interesting than going in the one direction constantly.

I can just imagine the sight of you, if I was another yacht in the area. Here I would be sitting peacefully in the middle of the ocean, and then on the breeze, I would hear this loud music, and then out of the dark, comes a bright pink yacht, with a lone sailer jigging about on the decks. I would think that other sailors would be pleasantly surprised at the sight!

And then of course there is the long trail of boats following along behind, with all those boys chasing you up! MUM BEWARE!

You are right you know, about the land noise that you miss. But I bet that after 8 months at sea, you will find it all a bit too much and yearn for the peace and quiet of the ocean, or maybe even the beat of the night club music!

Anyway, keep safe, keep all those boys in check, and keep up all the great work that you are doing.

By the way, 5 Oceans Media has OK'd me to use your website link in my email signature, and as I send out about 300 emails per day, you might find a huge surge in interest and hits on your website.

I am very proud of your achievements and responsibility so far, and it will be a great pleasure to continue to spread the word around about "our" Jessica Watson.

Hi jessica
Fantastic, your first fish another milestone, that's one monkey off your back, well done Jesse.
I bet you didn't think it would be so slow getting around your northern marker island. I don't think the northerners wont you to leave, but we wont you back down here, so hopefully the wind gods are kind.
I always have a little laugh when people say it must be boring out there. Their would always be little jobs around EPL to be done, food to cook, sail trimming, tacking (which you have been doing alot lately) plotting your coarse, checking your position, checking the weather reports, checking that fishing line, washing yourself, your clothing, cleaning and tidying up around EPL, all the phone calls and radio skeds back home. This would be only a small part of your day.
I was, as was your mum, a little worried with you bumping into those boys, even way out there you can't get away from them, only kidding!
You will always have times you will miss things back home, but the adventure you are doing at the moment fantastic, so enjoy it, will be all over before you know it.
So keep having fun and keep safe.

Just had sushi last night, and I'm glad you had a chance for some too. Nothing fresher than something you just caught yourself!

You're no doubt tired by now of all the kudos about what an inspiration you are, but Jessica, it's just true. The only downside is that, for the rest of your life, you'll be a role model, an example of the best qualities of the human spirit. A heavy burden to bear, perhaps. But you'll be fine, because your inner strength will carry you far in life, farther even than the miles from home to home again.

Jessica congratulations on rounding Kiribati successfully, you have displayed excellent seamanship and handling skills. Not an easy task having to put in a board here and another one there, tacking can be difficult if the wind and tides are not "right"In my humble opinion Jesse, this rounding is a significant milestone, well done!!Was there much fish left to eat after you finished gutting it?EPL will continue to perform well for you, get your rest, eat well and stay "clipped on".God Bless Dougal

Congratulations Jessica on the absolutely superlative sailing you are doing and read the latest news entry:
Overnight Jessica reached the northern most part of her voyage and rounded Kiritimati (Christmas) Island and is now heading south towards the notorious Cape Horn.

Kiritimati Island is one of the three major rounding points during her around the world voyage, the other two being Cape Horn and Tasmania. Whilst she will pass under the Cape of Good Hope, it is not actually a rounding mark.

Bruce Arms, who is an integral part of Jessica’s shore team, has been impressed with her skills in rounding Kiritimati.

“Jessica has displayed really impressive seamanship and patience in rounding this landmark. The wind conditions have not been favourable for her, with headwinds and strong currents, so it has been a very challenging few days. But we have all been so impressed with the manner in which she has gone about this rounding. She kept well clear of the island and did not take any short cuts,” said Bruce.

“Whilst everyone was rightly celebrating her crossing of the equator last week, the rounding of Kiritimati was in my opinion a far more significant achievement, as it has required a very high level of sailing skills to do so and Jess has come through with flying colours.”

Since rounding Kiritimati, Jessica has made good time and is now expected to cross the equator again sometime this evening (AEDT) as she is now enjoying favourable east-south east winds.

I am simply lost for words!!! What I love about you Jessica is your fearless attitude of nothing will be a problem you just know everything will turn out fine.

Thanks too for your crew posting the video interview for those of us you can't get the Oz TV stations.

I totally agree with you, Bruce. A lesser sailor would have been tempted to take a short cut and may have ended up as another victim of the Bay of Wrecks. But doing all that and still find time for fishing? That’s over the top.

Hi Jessica,
I see you have made the turn and are definitely well on your way South. If I lived in Australia I would say "Welcome back", but I live in the United States of America and I can only say "Sorry to see you go, please come back and visit us again".
I think the weather is looking real good so you should be able to make some good time.
Once as I was changing screens something about the Philippines and a man on a bamboo raft caught my eye. I tried to find it again but couldn’t. Does it mean anything?? I’ll keep trying.
I had to laugh about all the “good natured” ribbing your Mom is taking about you and the “boys”. I’ll bet she is enjoying that. Keep up the good work, I’m glad to see you made it well pass Kiribati Island. Seems that was a real handful.
Take care, be safe and stay alert. Always thinking of you.

Skip'Ohoy Captain Jessica.Congrats with your first fish, hope it tasted good.I grew up in a small fishing willage in the Lofoten islands in Norway and was eating fish 6 out of 7 days.Fish is so good for you,but you have to look out for a few tings.Never eat sushi,to much bacteria and dont try to dry the fish onboad, that's not safe either, dried fish is done best for months in the winther time.Bake or boil the fish good thru,no sushi whatsoewer.I was used to eat Codfish,Pollack and Coalfish and they all have rather soft bones still I got them stuck in my troat(horrible).Tropical fish have very hard and sharp bones so chew well, feel with your tongue and be 100% shure before you let the fish go down.If the (Horrible) should happen, you can eat dry biscuit and take small sips of water. The biscuit will cling to that fisbone and take it out,if its not too far in.Just let it not happen.Cooking fish:You can also boil fish in salty water(seawater I think would be OK)salty water,or else the fish will not taste good.Oily fish like that one you got also need a half teaspoon of vinegar.Boil up the water put the pices of fish in,the boiling will stop,as soon as the water starts boiling again take off the power and let it stay for 30 minutes.Voila bon apetit.Just watch out for those fishbones. When you handle those fish please be carful,if you have a nick in your skin, you could have a bloodpoising going, use glowes and wash your hands soonest after handling the fish.Sorry this was a lot of down the drain stuff,I just want you to be safe.Smoot sailing Captain Jessica.

Hi Jessica
This for you, but mainly for some bloggers worried about CIGUATERA poisoning.
It is mainly found in reef fish eg. Coral Trout, Chinaman etc. but very rare, if at all in Pelagic fish like Tuna. The small tuna you caught would be perfectly ok. Tuna are one of the most consumed fish in the ocean, so eat away and enjoy.
For your Tuna to be more enjoyable, you will need to bleed the fish. It will not be a nice thing to do, but you need to tie a rope around the tail and cut right through the neck and hang over the side for 5 to 10 minutes. Also there will alot less mess to clean up.
I'm sure you let us know how it tasted.
So that's it for now, keep having fun and keep safe.

Hey Jesse
Congrats on the fish but the real congrats must be for the achievement of the most northerly point in your circumnavigation. The rounding of Kiritimati seems to have been overlooked in the excitement.
A few more days of warm weather then you are in the Southern Ocean ready for the long slog to the bottom of Tasmania then north to home.
Using the purely graphical interpretation there is a brief downhill run then a bobble along the bottom then home - Oh that it was so easy..........
So Jesse - Congratulations on the fish but real accolades to you and EPL on the rounding and the commencement of the next stage of your trip.

“The ultimate test for the ability to control the quality of experience is what a person does in solitude, with no external demands to give structure to attention. Hey Jessica - your fish looks like a skipjack tuna, also called a bonita in the Pacific islands. Good eating if cooked fresh. Keep your lines out, there's plenty fish out there. Best wishes for your journey - stay sharp and stay safe.

Bouys in the water...? No idea, but suspect it has something with unexploded ordonance to do...

Great job young lady! We're wathcing your blog from here in Nashville, Tn, USA. It's great to see a young person going for it! You'll remember these days all of your life. It's sometimes scary to follow your dreams but you're doing great. We just had a young lady named Taylor Swift sweep the CMA awards here in our city last week. You can't hit any home runs unless you "swing for the fence". Go get em tiger! Be safe and don't take unnecessary chances.

...AND HERE COMES OUR JESS ! One hand on the tiller, holding the boat on a critical angle to hoon around "Chrissie Island", while holding a fish in the other hand, grinning like a 'Chesshire Cat'. With the 3rd hand...
-oops-

M U U U U M M M, THERE ARE BOYS ON BORD !
Get the broom...

To Jess,
Hi I'm Ines, i'm in grade 6 at Moama Anglican Grammar School.
I have been looking at your blogs and videos with my class and it looks like you're doing really well so far.
Your blog has been really interesting and fun to read.
But I would like to know, it sounds like you're always really busy on the boat - so how do actually get sleep?
Well done on catching your first fish for the trip, and good luck for the rest of your trip,
Ines.

Aloha Jessica

Trust all is going well for you. My prayers are often with you.

I have nothing but admiration for you.

Most of my life I have worked with people with broken minds. I have come to the conclusion the greatest tragedy in life is growing old knowing that somewhere along the way you lost yourself, and never succeeded in being who God called you to be.

They let life pass them by.

Stay strong Jessica, don't ever give up on your dreams

The wind and current weren't going to make things easy for us, so it was a particularly sleepless night as we tacked and inched along ever so slowly.
