Perfect conditions and food

Well, perfect is about the only word for it out here today, we're doing 6.5 knots on a broad reach heading for a waypoint below Norfolk Island. The wind was just getting up above 15 knots so I pulled the first reef into the main this morning to keep the motion comfortable and to make the steering easier on Parker (the windvane).

It's such a nice day that I've just spent the morning sitting up on deck enjoying it all, watching Ella's Pink Lady sail along and listening to music. Today there's little speckles of white streaked across the water, as if they're there just to break up all that blue! Just think how great it would be if it were like this every day. On second thoughts maybe it would get a little boring!

It's taken awhile but I think the enormity of the voyage and everything that's happened over the last few months finally caught up with me today, surprisingly it didn't make me feel at all daunted, just proud of all the people who got us here and a little overwhelmed, wow this is it! And it's so much better than I ever dreamed! Still there's a lot to get through yet but I know we can do it, one leg at a time. I'm about half way between Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands now.

So rightyo, foods another big thing that I get a lot of questions about, here goes;

It was definitely a bit of a mission and Mum has done an amazing job of putting together a tasty menu that will last 8 months, plus extra just in case. Ella's Pink Lady doesn't have refrigeration (because it draws too much power) and after a lot of forced sampling, I concluded that fancy
sports foods and most freeze dried food, just wasn't going to work for me.

With a lot of help and advice from other sailors and from Gray Slater a dietitian from the University of the Sunshine Coast, I ended up with a pretty good diet that's amazingly close to normal food. My main meals are range of about 10 different meals called Easyfood which is pretty amazing, tasty stuff that only needs to be heated and lasts on the shelf for 18 months. Breakfasts are normal stuff like cereal and porridge and I'm able to bake my own bread (I think I'm going to have to try my first loaf soon because the stuff I took, is getting very stale!) and things like scones in the pressure cooker. Other than that there's tined fruit and veggies,
plenty of treats, hot drinks and etc.

I'll see if I can remember to tell you more about what I'm eating as we go, tonight, I'm planning to have Easyfood lamb chops (they are so nice!)with deb (mashed potato) and asparagus.

Ok, that was too long in front of a computer screen so I'm off to enjoy the rest of the day and maybe have a bucket bath in the cockpit.

Cya,

Jesse

Thanks to crusiergirl for the flat bread & pizza recipe (no doubt that Jess and many others will give it a try) and to Gus in Sidney, re: “high frequency radio lingo” for stepping up and helping Jessica to answer some of the many blogger’s questions on Jessica’s web page. I’m sure she appreciates any help that anyone cares to offer up with the multitude of sailing and voyaging questions asked; especially since she has to try and do it in inside a rocking & bouncing boat. Not a pleasant thing to do, particularly when still feeling a little green at the beginning of a boating trip.

Now here’s my two cents:
To Alan, re: “Hope the Easyfood lamb chops were as nice as you anticipated. How did you heat them?” From checking out one of Jess’ video tours of the Pink Lady I could see that she was using a small, unpressurized (for safety reasons), two-burner fuel oil stove, which is gimbaled (mounted with swivels so as to stay steady & level regardless of boat motion) and is using (I assume) a smokeless alcohol fuel. Plus, Jess mentions having a pressure cooker onboard too.

To all you fishermen who want to know if Jess is going to fish for her dinner… Jess is not a big fish person but has eaten fresh-caught fish on one or more of her boating adventures (just delve deeper into her blog). I’m sure she has a limited amount of fishing tackle on board if it becomes necessary to catch fish for food.

As to the type of sails she flying, please don’t ask the poor girl to give extensive sailing equipment lessons to the uninformed. She has a lot of work on board to do already, without succumbing to the task of trying to teach everyone about sailboats too. For technical questions and the like, just ask if anyone on the blog has an answer to your question. I know that there are plenty of people following this blog with the collective knowledge to answer just about any questions you may have. Short of that, the information is freely available, and easy to find on the web (do your own homework! Jess, I’m sure, has enough homework of her own!) Anyway, from what I can tell she is flying a “main sail” or “main” (the sale attached to the aft (rear) side of the “main mast” (big pole sticking straight up). For the front of the boat she probably has several sails to choose from; different sizes for different conditions. Currently I believe she is flying a Genoa (a large front sail or “head sail”). She most assuredly is carrying “storm sails” aboard (smaller, heavier cloth sails) for when conditions deteriorate. Jess has to determine as best as possible what sails to use well before conditions deteriorate because if the weather gets too rough, making sail changes can become rather unpleasant (big understatement).

Hi Jesse,
Good to hear from you and explanations of Easy Food and your very cool menu. I dropped by a second hand store today and was looking for vinyl albums for my mum and found something by Christopher Cross ..."Sailing" and thought of you. Some of the lyrics go:
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can
find the joy
Of Innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me.....

My two cents continued:
As far as Jessica’s water supply is concerned, modern voyaging sailboats have water tanks on board that hold enough water to last for several days or weeks depending on usage. Jess does not have enough water on board to get her through her journey. She has to be using a desalinating system of special filters and a high-pressure pump (check any marine supplier on the web for more info). These water purifiers use a lot of electricity from the boats “house” batteries’. These batteries’ are charged from the wind vane-wind generator, the solar panels, or the generator on the engine. Electrical usage must be constantly monitored via special electrical meters and gauges. Jess only has a limited amount of fuel to use to run the engine so I’m sure she will only use the engine when necessary. She will probably run the engine to “exercise it” for a few minutes on a periodic basis “engines like that”. The engine most usually has its own bank of batteries’ from which to draw starting power from. These batteries can be used as a backup to the house batteries and vise versa.

Besides being an expert sailor and navigator, Jess has to know how to maintain a vast complex system of electrical and mechanical equipment. She has to be able to do things like rebuild her desalination pump and filter system. Use an electrical multi-meter. Change diesel fuel filters and fan belts and hoses. She has to be able to fix fuel lines and electrical wires. She has to know how to make gaskets. She has to know how to plug leaks in thru-holes in the hull (bottom) in an emergency. She may have to do this while under extreme conditions of weather, fatigue, malaise, and nausea. She has to know where all her tools and spare parts are stowed and be ready to find them in an instant. She has to know survival first aid and antibiotic use. She has to be able to staple closed any open wounds that she might get. She has to know how to extinguish onboard fires. She even has to know how to rebuild the “head” (lavatory). On a boat the “head” is a complex piece of equipment all unto itself, with valves, hoses, gaskets, a tank and a pump or two.

Most people who don’t know sailboats have no idea of how knowledgeable Jess has to be to be able to undertake this endeavor. It’s not just impressive that she can single hand a boat of this size in all kinds of weather both day and night. That she can navigate and use complex electronic gear (radar, HF radio, GPS, Satcom satellite communications, etc.) She can diagnose problems and make repairs as well. All of this and more at 16 years old! This girl is one special little lady! Am I impressed? Hell Yeah, You should be too!

No, Jess cannot have visitors on board. No, Jess cannot stop for fuel, water, food, and spare parts/equipment if she is to be eligible for “around the world solo and unassisted” status. She may anchor her boat to make repairs if need be.

And to Anonymous from NN, re: “Jess, I just realized that your blog has already become my highlight of the day! I click on your site several times daily to see if the blog has arrived.” You’re not alone there! Count me in too!

Some more info from an australian paper: 'couriermail.com.au':

AUSTRALIA'S yachting weather guru says Jessica Watson should make steady progress through the South Pacific as she continues her chase for a world sailing record.

Dr Roger Badham, who has guided sailors through six Olympics, seven Americas Cups and 30 trips around the world, said the outlook for the next week was favourable for Jessica.

Dr Badham will provide updates every Saturday for The Courier-Mail on the weather confronting Jessica on a journey that will take her into the treacherous southern ocean.

"The weather for Jessica for the next week is pretty good," Dr Badham said. "There is a little front coming towards her (today) with 20-30 knot north- westerly winds but early Sunday morning (tomorrow) the winds are turning around.

"She should have south-easterly winds from Monday to Thursday of about 15-20 knots and maybe into the 20s. And she should have a shower or two but it should be basically fine."

Good to see that Jessica has one of the best weather-experts in the world on her team.

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,26252041-3102,00.html

Just checked the weather myself as I do every day and I noticed quite a change:

the synoptic chart shows a low pressure trough and a low forming south of Jessica's position pushing the high pressure system further north-east:

http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/national/charts/synoptic.shtml

the 10 meter wind chart shows in colour
the increased wind-strength in Jessicas
Area between Lord Howe Island to Norfolk Island and the North of New Zealand with winds of 15kts to 25kts:

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/nmoc/latest_Y.pl?IDCODE=IDYTX003.10M.000

seems like Jessica will have a busy day today on the Ella's pink lady.

As all Radio Operators should know,

we can not expect the pilot of an Aircraft or the captain of a ship to publish their vital radio communication frequencies or scheduled radio calls.

There is the added risk of airwaves and frequencies being jammed. In an Emergency situation secure Radio-Communication can be a life-saver.

The same goes for longitude and latitude fixes in the Oceania area.

There are a large number of Islands and boats in Oceania and I for one would not like to see other boats or craft intrude on Jessica's course and heading.

Jessica and her team are already giving so much and if we read the blog we know that there will be a tracker sometime soon.

So until then please let's be patient. South of Norfolk Island should be close enough for now for plotting on a Map.

Hello Jesse,

Tonight's gonna a good night! I finally got my new Ipod working, and the "black-eye peas" are jamming in my brain. I hope you can get new music as you travel because if I was in your "bare-feet" and dancing on a boat, I would playing it proud and loud. I would never be lonesome with music because music can fuel your soul. So, if you are ever lonesome or down...just jam baby! It will bring back to an even keel....You are doing great! Keep the sheets full and the tassels horizonal....Godspeed Princess.......Buddy

fabulous sailing Jessie - 6.5knots sounds perfect. Putting the reef in sounds a smart move. Jon Sanders succeeded by making moves before they were needed. Your food sounds wonderful. I'm hooked to your blog, fantastic what you're doing. 20 years ago, 4 years before you came into this world, I also set off from Holland on a solo circumnavigation of the globe. It took me 4 years and a bit to complete, anchoring in many beautiful places. We sailed back to Holland married to an Aussie and have now a beautiful dauchter almost your age. It was the best thing I (we) ever did.
Please Keep alway clicked to your harness even if the weather is fine.

Well done Jessica. When I was 15 my mum, Gwen wished me to sail around the world. Thought it a joke, now I understand. It is a once in a lifetime learning curve, and an age we are still learning, and able to react with survival instincts at a high. See ya on the return trip.

Hi Jessica, I'm going to join the ranks of people who are very curious about your water supply. I am assuming you pull salt water from the sea and use it for things that don't require fresh water, but what do you do for drinking water? How much fresh water can you store on board, and do you have the means to purify sea water into fresh water? If so, does it use heaps of electricity... or gas?

Hiya Jess,
The best bread I have ever made on a boat was :
3 cups of plain flour,
a packet of yeast
and SEAWATER
to make a sticky dough.

Maybe it was the boat oven or perhaps the Seawater, but it had super crunchy crust and was great bread - as good as it gets.

Good luck, one step at a time.

This may be a question with an obvious answer, but not to me... What happens to the rubbis that is created onboard? is there some sort of "rubbish compactor" so it can be stored in as small a space as possible til the end? I'm guessing food scaps etc can be thrown to the fish but the rest is carried on board the boat?

I was initially quite negative about your voyage - worrying about your safety, thinking it was terrible and ludicrous to attempt such a thing. But you reminded me of what a weakling I can be! I regret having those thoughts now, and am sending you loving, encouraging thoughts, and a merry journey. I KNOW you will prove every critic wrong! Don't ever doubt yourself - although I don't think that needs to be said, as you're doing an amazing thing here! I wish you the very best. I will follow your blog and send you positive thoughts daily. You are an inspiration! Thank you for proving me wrong and revealing a part of me I did not want!

Hi Jess. I'm a little older than you but I can relate lots to your spirit. Once when I was 16 I found myself in the Captains seat of a DC3 airliner on a scheduled night flight from Mackay to Brisbane with 30 pax aboard. When I was 19, one night I drove in reverse all the way from Surfers Paradise to Mt Gravatt, Brisbane. Both exploits very naughty by todays standards, but they serve to remind me that rebelliousness and non-conformity are alive and well in you my dear. God speed and enjoy!!

Hope you find it as useful as I did. Hope your day is good Jess!

Don't worry about writing too much or boring us because even the little details are fun to read and I'd bet most people have no clue about sailing or anything nautical...so write away when you feel like it!

Some history on Norfolk Island.
The island was first settled by East Polynesian seafarers either from the Kermadec Islands north of New Zealand or from the North Island of New Zealand. They arrived in the fourteenth or fifteenth century and survived for several generations before disappearing. Their main village site at Emily Bay has been excavated by archaeologists. These people left behind stone tools, the Polynesian Rat, and banana trees as evidence of their occupation. The harakeke, or New Zealand flax plant was brought to Norfolk Island either from New Zealand directly or from Raoul Island (Sunday Island) by these Polynesian settlers. The final fate of these early settlers remains a mystery. The first European known to have sighted the island was Captain James Cook, in 1774, on his second voyage to the South Pacific on HMS Resolution. He named it after the Duchess of Norfolk, wife of Edward Howard,9th Duke of Norfolk. The Duchess was dead at the time of the island's sighting by Cook but Cook had set out from England in 1772 and could not have known of her death in May 1773. Norfolk Islandwas used for many years as a penal colony for the most incorrigable prisoners. In 1856, the Island was resettled by Pitcairn Islanders who left their native island when the population grew too large to be sustained by the resources on Pitcairn. Durign World War II, the ISland was used as an air base but being far from the war zone it was abandoned in 1944. In the 1960s, 50 families from Britain settled on the island after watching a BBC television documentary.

The island is the eroded remnant of a basaltic volcano active around 2.3 to 3 million years ago, with inland areas consisting mainly of rolling plains. The island is the highest point on the Norfolk Ridge, which is part of the submerged continent Zealandia.
The area surrounding Mt Bates is preserved as the Norfolk Island National Park, which covers approximately 10% of the island. The park contains remnants of the forests that originally covered the island including stands of subtropical rainforest. The park also includes the two smaller islands to the south of Norfolk Island, Nepean and Phillip islands. The vegetation of Phillip Island was devastated due to the introduction during the penal era of pest animals such as pigs and rabbits giving it a red-brown color viewed from Norfolk. Pest control and remediation work by park staff has recently brought some improvement to the Phillip Island environment.

From the pictures, this island looks like a very nice place to live.

Hi Jesse,

Of course you will be feeling the enormity of the challenge you set yourself, because it is enormous, and it won't get any easier until you 'turn the corner' i.e. on the way back rather than out...

Your worries had to happen - and you will quickly overcome your concerns because you offered yourself no other option.

Disregard the few naysayers - and have nothing to do with any negative people, they will only drag you down!

Only keep in mind the hundreds of thousands of positive people that you have drawn to your side, and who support you unconditionally.

Surround yourself with their love and the good cheer they offer you.

And all your fan club are naive if they don't understand that you should keep your secrets to yourself...pls!

Particularly your position, HF frq and skeds - reveal nothing,

Hi There Jesse,
How are you ? You seem to be okay; and having Heaps of Fun !! . . . Wow !!! ... Skipping Along at 6.5 Knots: That's Kool !! I bet you were Happy to see those 15 knot winds. How's "PARKER" ? ... and was I right about where You "Coined His 'Nickname' From" ... Ensign Charles (Chuck) Parker on McHale's Navy (because of the way CHUCK was always Playing with the Windvane at the Start of the Show ?

It must be wonderful to just sit back on deck and listen to Music as 'PINK LADY' Glides Along, and you ponder over the fruition of Your Dream. I said in my previous Post that Time Will Pass and it will be over before you know it: That may Be The case, Jesse; at the end of the 8 Months (or whatever), your Journey Dream will have come to It's End . . . . . BUT !!! ... Your Journey Will have Just Begun !! ..... Because 'MEMORIES LAST FOREVER!!!".

The Menu Plan and Food Sounds GREAT! I love Home Baked Bread. As for the Stuff thats getting Stale, don't waste it (yet): If you put some Milk & Sugar on it in a Cereal Bowl (and a sprinkle of Nutmeg, if you have any), it makes a Great Alternative to normal Cereal. Also, you can make Bread Crumbs and Coat your Chops & Chicken (if you have Chicken). Another thing is to Make Crouton's out of it. Also, if you Put A Slice or Two in with Cake, it will make the Cake stay fresher longer.

We haven't been able to follow you on GOOGLE EARTH since about Wednesday, so can't wait to use the Tracking System on Your BLOG. In the Meantime, is it possible to give us Approximate Long. and Lat. Bearings that you are at when you Post Each Blog. Even if you can do it ongoing, because not everyone might be able to follow the Tracking System on Your Blog.

You've only gone a short way so far, but judging by your Progress and Persistence, I'm guessing that you'll arrive in Sydney between May 21st 2010 and June 15th 2010.

They've Been Referring To You as "THE SCHOOLGIRL JESSICA WATSON" ..... But They Should Be Saying ... "AUSTRALIA'S TEEN SAILOR JESSICA WATSON !!" ... "AFRICA Might Have The SAHARA" ..... But ... "AUSTRALIA'S GOT JESSICA WATSON !!!"

Signing Off For Now, in the Usual way . . .

Have A Safe & Happy Journey, but Most Of All ... Have Fun, Jesse:

This morning(Sunday) there was a radioshow where young people were asked about actualities. A group of them ( about 12-16years old) chose you for the most popular sportsman in these days!!!!!!!!!
Jess, all the best from here, be careful all the time. We all are folowing every mile of your journey.
Many regards from Marcus, Germany

Hi Jessica,
Just a short note to say Hi and wish you some more luck. Always thinking of you and praying for you. I hope you're taking time to do a little "moping". I liked that. Pictures are really beautiful and I caught some more of your videos that I somehow overlooked. Take care and keep up the good work and above all stay safe.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

This is for Mike D (landlocked in in Philadelphia, Pa, USA)
Kudo's to you Mike, she can't possibly answer all the Questions that are requested. But you did a fine job in laying out the whole picture. I, myself have spent a lot of time traveling thru the computer getting answers about shipboard life, and what it entails. She definitely has her hands full, but there is no doubt in my mind that she will handle it. Even with all my searching I still picked up a few pointers from you. Thank you.

Hi Jess

You seem to be making OK progress. I get the impression that there are no Aussie's on land these days we all seem to be out there with you (perhaps we're all at sea without you on land). Sorry, I know what you're thinking - what a really dumb attempt to be funny!

You sound in good spirits and that's what us bloggers need to know -if Jess is OK then we're OK.

Food wise you seem well catered for; Easyfood!! - have you run into a McDonald's-like franchise out there? Also, from your reports you appear to have a chocolate factory on board.

It occurs to me from time to time with so many troubled young people in the world Jess appears like a beacon in the night - Jess, the record is one thing but just for a moment think about the impact you are having on the lives of young people around the world. While this is your personal journey the potential it has to change the lives of others is not trivial. Rest assured what you are doing will impact positively on others in ways you never would have imagined.

Jess, please take good care of yourself.

there's been a lot of questions about fresh water. more than likely jess has a desalinator on board, so she didn't have to worry about trying to store 8 months of fresh water on board!

I can't imagine you've got time to read all these comments on your blog, but maybe over the next five years you'll get them all read :-)
I've had a huge introduction to YOU (spent all day yesterday back-reading your archived postings), but my own biography is not nearly so interesting or momentous, so I'll try to be brief; Tracie Hall--51, happily married to Don Hall for 19 years as of this past Oct. 21, with three four legged canine kids and one feline. Don won a 23 Aquarius sailboat last December on an E-bay auction moored in Dana Point, CA that we've ventured out in all of 4 times. It kind of scares me. As a child I had dreams of tremendously huge looming black title waves that I was terrified of, so the thought of venturing into the open ocean is taking some getting used to--never sure whether the childhood dreams were psychological snapshots of whatever my life was about at the time or future predictions (or something else interesting or not). A friend of mine sails regularly in Seattle and has taken us out on our boat two of the four times ---less scary when someone on board is experienced. I've been reading Steve Sleight's "New Complete Sailing Manual" for about 6 months now and am only half way through. Based on that, you'd think I was bored by it. No, just a slow reader. :-)
I'm enjoying following your blog for the added education, but also because I'm totally enjoying your personality and the unity you have with your family and team.
Blessings my new friend,
Tracie

Hello Jessica,

I´m Ton from the Netherlands (the other side of the globe) I read your blog and comments with my class H4D from RSG Lingecolege Highschool.
We admire you much!
Do you happen to have heard from LAURA Dekker? She wants to circumnavigate the world too, but the Dutch gouvernement stopped her from doing so.
Tomorrow (oct 26) the judge decides.

Stay hooked, Ton.
