Out into the Tasman and Sleeping

Sorry I didn't get an update to you all yesterday. I was busy on deck and around the boat, then wow, another day gone! If time keeps flying at this rate I'll have to seriously consider another lap or maybe it's a little early to be thinking about that? Again it's possibly a little early to be reflecting but I can't believe how well the first week is going. I'd always expected that settling in would be one of the toughest times for me but I've been in great spirits, keeping busy and enjoying all the simple things.

Overall its been pretty quiet out here, but after a great run of 155nm yesterday, the wind dropped off again and now we (Ella's Pink Lady & I) are back to plodding along slowly. So we're well and truly out into the Tasman now, near Lord Howe Island, with Australia well behind us. Ella's Pink Lady is under full mainsail and genoa at the moment and doing a slow but steady 3knots.

The sun's still shining and the water is an even more amazing shade of blue, but I've been finding that sunset is my favorite time of the day when the whole world turns pink! This morning I had a school of dolphins pass by and the odd bird also drops in to check us out. I think keeping the cabin tidy is going to become one of those never ending battles. Is it just me or does housework
always take this long? And then washing up. There's no one else offering to take their turn, so I'm stuck with it after every meal!

I'd love to answer some more of your questions but there's just way too many! So what I thought I'd do is to talk though one aspect of the voyage or Ella's Pink Lady in more depth every time I have a quiet day. We've got a while to go, so maybe I'll have answered all the questions by the time I get home?

Starting with 'sleep'. Everyone's fascinated about what happens to Ella's Pink Lady when I'm
sleeping and it's a subject that we've put years of thorough research into. I better start from the beginning so everyone understands, sorry if I'm boring you with the basics.

Firstly I obviously can't be hand steering the whole time so Ella's Pink Lady has got three different self steering systems, two electronic autopilots and the Fleming Windvane mounted on the stern whose nicknamed 'Parker' ( can anyone guess why??). The windvane is my favourite because unlike the other two which draw a lot of power 'Parker' steers us by responding to the wind over a blade and the water over a paddle trailing off the stern. But I'll get to the
power subject some other time.

Then I've got four different ship detection systems, which all sound like loud alarms if there are any ships approaching. Ella's navigation lights and radar reflector also make us more visible to other ships at night. But even with all that I never just put my head down a get a full night sleep. If there's a bit going on I'll take a 20min power nap popping my head up to check on everything before going back to sleep. When things are quieter I'll sleep for 40min or longer at a time. It's amazing how used to the motion of Ella's Pink Lady I've already become, if the wind picks up a little the nose will wake me or if we drift off course the sails luff (flap) and wake me. It takes a little getting used to I but I find that I can get all the sleep I need like this and wake refreshed every time.

Before I go to sleep each time I set up two different wake-up alarms so that there's no chance that I'll sleep through. You should hear how loud one of them is, it still makes me jump out of my skin every time I hear it.

All the equipment probably all seems a little over the top but we're going to be out here for a while and the collision taught us that there's no such thing as being too careful!

Also we will have a basic tracking system setup on the website within the next few weeks or so to give you an idea of how we are progressing.

For those in Australia, you can tune in to ONE HDs Thursday night live show tonight at 7.30pm because I'll be talking to them via skype and they'll be playing a little video footage I've
been taking out here today. If you can't watch it tonight I'm sure it'll be up on the net soon enough.

Wow that was quite a mouthful, hope I didn't drone on a bit there!

Jesse

Jessica,

My wife and I run a youth seamanship program on a 19th century sailing ship in Galveston, Texas. We know full well what teenagers like you are capable of and we are behind you 100%.

In my experience, keeping a tidy boat is even more important at sea than it is on land because most of the time, the land doesn't move under you and throw things around. So don't worry about missing posts because you are keeping tidy. I suspect we'll miss a few here and there as you hit rough weather.

We will be watching your voyage with great interest and wish you the very best. You are a true hero and are destined to great things in your life.

Hi Jessica,
It's Me Again: You are Truly An Inspiration !!!
"PARKER" ... Let Me Guess ..... Named after 'ENSIGN CHARLES (Chuck)PARKER' From McHALE'S NAVY ..... Correct ?!!?
I see that you read my previous Comment about your reports referring to "WE" .... where I commented saying that You Were Not Alone and that when you said "WE", you were referring to "YOURSELF" & "ELLA'S PINK LADY". It was good to in this BLOG where you Clarified That by saying "...the wind dropped off again and now we (Ella's Pink Lady & I) are back to plodding along slowly." ELLA'S PINK LADY is a Beautiful Yacht and She has A Wonderful Skipper.
Don't worry about thinking that You Might 'DRONE ON A BIT' with your Reports: There's No Chance Of Anyone Getting Bored. I could have read much more than what you wrote today. There's one Question that I'm sure Lots Of People are wondering about, so you might like to answer it in your next Update: " What About Rubbish Disposal ? ".
You certainly have A Huge Number Of Fans ..... An You Deserve It !!! Lot's of People are tracking you, I assure you. I've started tracking you with GOOGLE EARTH KML, but my PC is a bit slow and it takes a while to load up up to date info, so Hopefully, The Tracking System that will be on YOUR BLOG might make it easier.

Anyway Jessica, enough from me; so I'll Sign Off in The Usual way.

Good Luck, Have A Safe & Happy Trip and Have Fun !!!

I'm fascinated with all the details of the technology you're using, and I'm sure everybody reading this feels the same. I'd also like to know more about your food and water supplies. Hi Jessica,

Glad to hear you are doing so well, My name is Darren and I am from Toronto Canada and just learned to sail last year, I bought a C&C 24ft boat and then learned to sail and race. This year I won the Commodores cup for Beginners racing and came second on the short course (191 nautical miles) Spinnaker fully crewed "Scotch Bonnet" for the Lake Ontario 300 which is the longest fresh water race in the world. As someone who just started sailing and with the smallest boat in the fleet I got a couple of "you can't do that in your little boat" and "you don't have enough experience" comments which I took to heart. I know how much effort I had to put into preparing for this race both on the sailing and safety sides and I can only imagine that effort multiplied by thousands is what you have and will be putting in for this campaign. When we came back in after finishing the race a fellow sailor on a different bigger boat called out to us as we sailed by "you guys did this in a 24ft boat, my hats off to you" and then bowed and took his cap off. At that moment our accomplishment filled me with a different kind of pride than I have ever felt. My hat is off to you, your parents and your entire team young lady, and I will be following you every single day until you return safely.

dear Jessica, by the way it is very honourable always to write in the form " we" when you´re talking about your yacht and you. An other sighn of good seamanship.
the name ´Parker´seems to be leaned on the television serie named `Butler Parker`.
On the theme sleep, ther was in a big german newspaper an small artikel about you whre they said you´ll sleep only 20min at the time. Maybe its a case of tranlation-fault. The way you discribe, being awake whenever someting is irregular is the normal way i know from my past as a seaman.

I wanted to offer you a Bon Voyage gift when you left Sydney but didn't think I had anything to offer.

Maybe it was a breeze from the Tasman that got through the blog, maybe my pondering your rounding the Horn, but I remember today that I'd written a poem about Two Seas many years ago.

It's actually about a relationship I had but, poetry being what it is, it may have some meaning for you while you're out there:

~~~~~~~~~
Two seas met
In the ocean of life.
The passage between was narrow
And full of hazard.
Yet, they met
And their waters mingled.
Each sea had its own storms.
Each had its own shores.
Yet, they met
And their shores touched;
But, their storms were calmed
In that narrow, hazardous passage.
Each sea had its own commerce.
Each had its own depths.
Yet, they met
And traffic through that
Passage was
Difficult.
But, their depths were joined and
The waters which were deep had
A trade all their own.
The land surrounding their
Passage was
Mysterious.
And things happened in those
Rocky cliffs;
And things happened in those
Lush green hills;
Things that no tongue can tell...
Time, as it will, passed...
And, the depths continued to
Deepen;
And, the common shore widened;
And, the land still held its mystery...
But, most gradually, there was
Created a
Wider channel, more common shore
That both seas used to
Lay up treasures.
Many said they couldn't believe
There was ever a time when the
Passage between the
Seas was narrow and hazardous.
But, the
Seas
Remembered.
Remembered
The days of uncertain passage,
The days of hazard.
And
They
Laughed
In addition to your satellite phone/internet/skype, do you have a HF radio ? I'd like to listen out for you.
Meanwhile, FAB ! Be sure to let us know if you discover Tracy island out there !
Hi Jessica,
When you mentioned you were near Lord Howe Island, to tell you the truth, being from the USA, I had no idea where that was. I have now educated myself and what a beautiful place!
I really like your approach of answering question by taking a principal subject and expanding on it as you did with the subject of sleeping.
I would be curious as to what method is used to recharge your batteries on board to power all of the electrical stuff you have. On some of the video I have watched I see a fan like device spinning and wondered if this is a generator of some sort?
Fair winds, be safe and Godspeed.
Hello Jessica,
It was great to see your new posting today. I was hoping all was well with you. Great new posting, and it was very interesting. I was wondering about sleep and how you would be handling that. I served on submarines, and I understand the interrupted sleep schedule. You will eventually get use to it. Sunset is the best time on the open ocean, and I bet the colors are great. You are making great time; keep it up, stay positive, and enjoy all those stars at night.
HELLO JESSICA, KEEP FOCUSSED ON YOUR DREAM BUT ALSO REMEMBER THE SEA IS A POWERFUL MASTER AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED AT ALL TIMES.
AS A SAILOR I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE FACING AND IT IS NOT EASY, THINGS CAN CHANGE IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, SO STAY SWITCHED ON.
YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM AND BREAK THE RECORD BUT THERE IS STILL A LONG, LONG WAY TO GO WITH SOME BAD WEATHER AND BIG SEAS TO COME.
YOU WILL HANDLE IT BUT DO NOT GET LAZY OR SLACK ON BOARD, STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE AND KEEP UP THE DISCIPLINE.
YOU ARE ONE GUTSY GIRL JESSICA AND KEEP THE BLOGS COMING.
I just finished reading all 205 comments and I was quite moved. You are touching peoples lives around the world. It's as if you are a ray of sunshine beaming through the darkness. With the world economy the way it is, people losing their homes, people afraid of this and that; I read your blog and I am uplifted. You are bringing us together as a Human Race and for that I thank you. And my sons thank you.
As a side note I used to do some sailboat racing in the San Francisco Bay on a Coronado 25. Our below decks were always in a shambles because of the pounding waves. I ran the jib and we won alot because our skipper was a young 17 year old like yourself who really understood the winds and tides, and he always yelled the loudest for "Room at the Mark".
Even if he didn't have the right of way everyone got out of his way because they didn't know the rules as well as he did. We would laugh all the way on the down leg reach at how gullable the other skippers were.
Anyway enough said. Keep up the great blogs, and as my brother would say who lives in New Zealand--good-on-ya (sp?)
Hello Jessica,
Some time soon,you will be crossing the Tropic of Capricorn,on the same latitude as Alice Springs and Rockhampton
Are you going to have a Neptun Party on Ella's Pink Lady as you cross the line ?
Lord Howe Island is roughly 450 nautical miles south from the Tropic of Capricorn
and that persisting high-pressure system in the Tasman Sea seems to like you and Ella's Pink Lady a lot.
see synoptic weather chart:
http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/national/charts/synoptic.shtml
The Tropic of Capricorn, or Southern tropic, is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. It lies 23° 26′22″south of the equator, and marks the most southerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon.
For Navigators:
The great circle of the Equator has 360˚degrees. Each degree equals 60 nautical miles. 360˚ x 60 nautical miles equals 21600 nautical miles or 40,003.02km which is the Earth circumference at the Equator.(1nm = 1.852km)
The sun travels at a speed of 15˚degrees
of longtitude per hour across our sky.
15˚degrees x 60nm is 900nm per hour.
In other words: Planet Earth rotates towards the East at a speed of 900 nautical miles or 1666.8km per hour at the Equator.
Add to that the yearly orbit around the sun and you come to realize that Planet Earth is a giant space station,which makes all of us Astronauts.
King Neptune is waiting ,Jessica.
wishing you fair winds to carry you across the Tropic of Capricorn and beyond.
Gus Tom and Serena,
Hi Jessica,
"Tomorrow I'm going to get up and sail around the world"
(and)
"I'll admit I was a little emotional for a while after all the goodbyes"
Well - only a little emotional?
That first line of yours I certainly found emotional - you are doing it - you are off!
Despite all of the things that got in your way to the start, despite the doubts you must have felt, despite the setbacks, you are now sailing your dream (and a lot of other peoples too, I am certain).
For what it is worth, whereever you go in life, there will be plenty of people all too quick to tell you why you can't do something, and why you should not even try. Yes, you are young, no you have not done this sort of sailing before, but so what ! You can obviously sail a yacht, you have a darn sound little ship there, you have a great group of loving family and friends behind you, and most of all, you have the courage, vision and passion to give it a go. Even if you got no further than you have today, you can be very proud of just that fact - you got out there and gave it a go.
Jessica, I wish you the absolute best on this adventure - there will be obstacles, there will be times of terror, there will be loneliness. But there will also be moments of sheer bliss, of excitement and fulfilment, and at the end you will be a different young lady, a better sailor, and equipped to take on anything the world may throw at you.
Go to it, enjoy everything that you can, and prove the nay sayers wrong.
The world needs people like you, and I and my beautiful wife will enjoy living your adventure through your blog.
May fair winds be with you.
Regards,
David (& Karen)
Pilot fish always seem to be swimming furiously in the bow wave. I wondered when they slept until I read a theory that every few minutes they dart forward a bit extra and catch a micro sleep until the yacht catches up to them again.
