"Blues and Pinks"

Today's been a quiet one out here. For a while again this afternoon we were completely becalmed again. I expected that it would frustrate me making so little progress but I really enjoyed the chance just to take it easy and start on a book between tweaking the sails. It's been so long since I've had anytime just to take it easy for a while and the freedom was amazing. No deadlines, nothing to rush off to, I can eat whatever I like whenever I like, no one to send me off to bed! It was pretty special this afternoon when the sea glassed right out, it was as if you could see right to the distant blue bottom apart from huge schools of jelly fish floating past. We even had a couple of dolphins drop in to say hi. The other unexpected visitor was a small plane who circled around overhead, just when I thought I was finally by myself!
I've already discovered that a tidy cabin means a happy Jessica. I can only relax when everything on deck, in the cockpit and down below is in its place and ready for the unexpected. Right now the sun's setting and the sky's turned a shade of pink, exactly the same as Ella's Pink Lady, very pretty! So I might get the camera out before finding something to eat (I'm thinking sweet and sour lamb and then pancakes), getting Ella's Pink Lady ready for the night, then calling in for evening skeds.

Jessica,

Best wishes on your voyage! Very motivational to read about your vision and courage! I haven't sailed in years but grew up sailing in the Atlantic Ocean off Miami, FL USA shoreline and around the Carribbean when I was your age! I wished I kept at it but college took me away. I will check in occassionaly to see how you are doing! - Miami Ken

Hi Jessica

I wanted to see you off but our boat is in the middle of repairs - don't you hate fixing the things! Anyway we'll be out there with about a million others when you get back.

It's a hell of an achievement just getting as far as you have so I think you will have many fans no matter what happens. Luck is obviously a major factor in the outcome. Don't take any risks, always wear your harness and enjoy the trip. The boring old land will still be here when you get back. Say hello to all those amazing birds and other sea creatures from me!

Now back to fixing the flipin thing so I can get out there too...

Raise main-sail and jib--steer forth,

But outset and sure entrance to the truest, best, maturest;)
Depart, depart from solid earth--no more returning to these shores,
Now on for aye our infinite free venture wending,
Spurning all yet tried ports, seas, hawsers, densities, gravitation,
Sail out for good, eidolon yacht of me!

The Schoolboy Circumnavigator

[Text from Don Holm's 'The Circumnavigators' , ch. 34]

Home is the sailor, home from the sea And the hunter home from the hill.(l)

ON HIS SIXTEENTH BIRTHDAY, MARCH 5, 1965, ROBIN LEE Graham said to his mother and father: "Know what I'd really like a boat of my own that I could sail to the South Pacific islands."

Most parents, upon hearing such talk, would dismiss it as impetuosity, but four and a half months later Robin stepped aboard his own 24 foot fiberglass sloop, Dove, a light displacement craft usually regarded as a day-sailor, and shoved off from Los Angeles for a shakedown cruise to Hawaii, a passage that took 22 1/2 days and was a piece of cake all the way.

To where a lifting foresail-foot is yanking at the sheet;
To a windy, tossing anchorage where yawls and ketches ride,
Oh I'l be going, going, until I meet the tide."

There's been a lot of endless bleating about the wisdom or otherwise of "allowing" a sixteen-year-old to take on this kind of challenge. All I can say to that is, there are sixteen-year-olds and there are sixteen-year-olds. And then there is Jessica Watson...

I live by the motto "you can only stuff it up". Knowing the worst outcome before you start makes success so much easier. However at times im conflicted by the famous words of Richard Prior "No pain, sounds good to me". Either way, go get em girl. As a high level Australian tax payer, i am more than happy to see some funds go towards any rescue you may need (hopefully not), certainly better spent on helping a great role model for young people in this country especially young women, then palming the billions of dollars to the dole bludging bogens that im sorry to say in 20 years will have a population majority and be very likely running the country. Good on you, the fact that you have started has you 100% successful in my book, no matter what the outcome.

Hi Jess, what a wonderful adventure you are on. You have a whole world supporting you and your dream. Stay focused and stay the course. Mark Twain made a comment many years ago, and here it is: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover".
Who knew what he wrote 100 years ago would have so much meaning to you today??? Anyways Jess, I really wish you all the best out there.

Hello Jessica,

Meteor Shower in Orion tonight:

Something really exciting is going to happen at around midnight in the night- sky above your Ella pink lady tonight.A Meteor Shower in the constellation of Orion called Orionids. Orion will rise in the east around midnight, you can easily make out the belt of Orion,3 stars lined up like the pyramids of giza.At its peak, the Orionids can display as many as 30 meteors per hour, a very impressive sight. The Orionids run from October 17-25, with the peak predicted for early on October 21.The meteors will be visible to observers in both hemispheres.Just look up anywhere into the sky with your unaided eye and wait. You'll see some eventually.Like all meteor showers, the Orionids occur as the Earth passes through the debris- strewn path of a comet,in this case, Halley's Comet. The meteors are simply tiny bits of ice and dust that fell away from the comet and ran into our atmosphere. As in all such showers, the meteors appear to originate from a point in the sky called the radiant. For this shower, the radiant lies in the constellation Orion.Hence the name.If you can trace back the direction of a meteor to the radiant in Orion, that means you likely saw an Orionid. You'll likely see more meteors after midnight, when the Earth turns into the debris field of Halley's famed comet.Watching a meteor shower is a pleasant way to spend the night. The brightstar in your east near Orion is Sirius and moving above you to the west will be Jupiter.Planet Jupiter is easily seen as the brightest object in your evening sky.

The new moon began last sunday,so the sky should put on a fine show for you tonight.Love and Godspeed.

Gustav, watching the southern sky from Sydney tonight.
