"Blues and Pinks"

Today's been a quiet one out here. For a while again this afternoon we were completely becalmed again. I expected that it would frustrate me making so little progress but I really enjoyed the chance just to take it easy and start on a book between tweaking the sails. It's been so long since I've had anytime just to take it easy for a while and the freedom was amazing. No deadlines, nothing to rush off to, I can eat whatever I like whenever I like, no one to send me off to bed! It was pretty special this afternoon when the sea glassed right out, it was as if you could see right to the distant blue bottom apart from huge schools of jelly fish floating past. We even had a couple of dolphins drop in to say hi. The other unexpected visitor was a small plane who circled around overhead, just when I thought I was finally by myself!
I've already discovered that a tidy cabin means a happy Jessica. I can only relax when everything on deck, in the cockpit and down below is in its place and ready for the unexpected. Right now the sun's setting and the sky's turned a shade of pink, exactly the same as Ella's Pink Lady, very pretty! So I might get the camera out before finding something to eat (I'm thinking sweet and sour lamb and then pancakes), getting Ella's Pink Lady ready for the night, then calling in for evening skeds.

You go girl! I'm very impressed by your desire and determination. It's rare in a teenager these days. Keep going and you may inspire an entire generation.

Keep it from the heart as you have been, because there will be tough days ahead. Get your rest while you can too. Savor each moment. My wife and I will try to check in regularly, especially to send you some inspiration. We'll pray for you, that The Lord will be with you all the way.

Remember to check your equipment every day, hope you have lots of duct tape! =)

Hello again Jessica!

Congratulations on getting out to sea safely even if with light winds...

I loved the description of the pink skies on your first evening out -- I have seen those myself and it is always memorable. The sea gives us great gifts, does it not?

After I taught my oldest son to sail a few years ago when he was a teenager, I sent him out on his first solo in our Lancer 25' sloop; he left Ventura Harbor one night in the dark and he circumnavigated several of the Channel Islands of the Southern California coast. Several days alone on a boat with just the sea, the seals, the dolphins and the wind. It was a lifechanging time for him!

I wish for you to have such good days -- though many, many more of them!

Be safe!

Jessica:

Here are the lyrics to a song by an American band called Little River Band. The song is called Cool Change and you can hear it on www.youtube.com.

If there's one thing in my life that's missing,
It's the time that I spend alone,
Sailing on the cool and bright clear waters.
There's lots of those friendly people showing me ways to go,
And I never want to lose their inspiration.

Time for a cool change,
I know that it's time for a cool change,
Now that my life is so pre-arranged,
I know that it's time for a cool change.

Well I was born in the sign of water,
And it's there that I feel my best,
The albatross and the whales they are my brothers,
It's kind of a special feeling,
when you're out on the sea alone,
Staring at the full moon like a lover.

What an adventure! Take it all in and be inspired. Solitude is golden...

Wow you are truly amazing. You are inspiring and a true role model. I’m not much older than you and have lived by myself for a while but never have I considered such an amazing task. I hope you have what is sure to become the trip of your life. Whether you attempt it again later on your life, this first time is going to be the one trip that would last forever in your mind. Take the chance you acquired to understand and appreciate the beauty of the oceans. I am a certified diver and only deep below the ocean do I find a peace hard o get in the “real world.” You will have lot of time in your hands now to think and observe so I hope you keep us posted often. I will try to follow your blog daily (something I’ve never done) so let’s see how it goes.

Niko

Just a good quote to make u think,

“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.”
– Mark Jenkins

Good luck with your adventure. I followed Zac's and Mike's journey around the world and now I will follow yours. Thanks for sharing your dream. Stay safe, be prudent, and enjoy the trip. While I admire you teen single hander, the Vendee Globe racers, or any single handed sailor, I start to believe more and more that sailing is quite risky alone. Like in mountain climbing, diving etc. it much safer with crew, even if only double-handed.

Take care,

I have been reading about your voyage in the news here in Denmark. This lead me to your very cool website. I gotta tell you, you are one tuff cookie. I have been sailing all my life to, and can only dream of doing a "round the world voyage" one day. I might need a bigger boat first. The one I have is a Solus 24(ft) :-)
Well, I just wanna wish you a safe trip. . I'll be checking your blog and the tracker, when it comes on. Take care...U can do it!!
kind regards Jacob R., Denmark

Now is the time for bravery as this is a very courageous journey that you have embarked on. So gather up all your courage and get on with the job so that one day you will find yourself coming out of the strain of the doing and going into the peace of the done.

What an incredible story you will have to tell your children and grandchildren.

We will be following your journey Jess and we wish you every joy. The world is your oyster.

Hey Jess,

No wind, no problem. It's good you brought some books with you, I hope you brought your pole with you, add in some tunes, and you've got a nice time, and maybe lunch. ;)

The sunset over Phoenix yesterday was pink here too, it made me think of your Pink Lady, she's a good sturdy ship, almost as unflappable as her skipper. God, what the air must smell like that first night out, and the stars, just thinking about it makes me smile.

Well, I'll be watching from here, with a smile when i think about you. Take care & have fun.

Hey Jessica,
What a great adventure you are going to have, I can't wait to read your blog comments. As a boy of 16 I sailed a long way around the world with my parents. We ultimately sank the boat in Sudan and again in Egypt but what an adventure we had; no electronics in those times. I would not swap one second of it...if i close my eyes I can still hear the sounds of the ocean and feel the boat under my feet. I am a lot older now and still sail often on my own boat; only now I will be thinking of you as I do it. I am so thrilled for you, what an adventure....you lucky devil

Good on you for standing up to your critics, they are all jealous because they never had the willpower in themselves to do what you are doing!!

Be safe, enjoy, have loads of fun, and remember only the freedom you have will teach you what no-one else can!!

We'll keep track of your journey, hopefully one day sooner than later we'll be sailing the world ourselves!!
