Hiya Jesse,

Just had a look at the pre-storm pics. Wow, the sea is a bit bitter today with that storm hangin about. I noticed in another blog that you should be out of these conditions soon, I hope that is true.

Thinking about you as always, sending positive vibe and will look forward to your next post, take care. Cheers Paula

G'day Jesse,

Thanks for posting such wonderful photos! I love them because they help me understand what the ocean is all about and they add an extra dimension to the lovely pictures you paint in your blogs.
I was happy to hear you got to have a snooze in the sun on the deck of EPL. That woulod have been so refreshing. And to top it off with dolphins and a special sunset - magic.
Life can offer us such wonderful moments if we stop to appreciate them.
I hope the storms don't throw too much at you and that you don't get bounced around too much. Talk about extremes! Sumbaking one day and storms the next.
Tomorrow I am going to have a go at making bread in my wood oven. I wonder if it will be as good as EPL bread?

Australia Day is coming up quickly, do you have a compilation of Aussie songs for the day?

Keep safe.

All the Best

Jessica,

WHEW!!!! That’s one experience that I imagine you would have preferred to skip, but what an incredible chapter to your saga. Ella’s Pink Lady just proved what a great blue water boat the S&S 34 is. But more than anything, you proved what an accomplished blue water sailor you are. Going through that type of experience proves why the years of preparation that you went through are so necessary. The sea should always be respected more than feared, and it’s because of that tremendous respect that you put in the tireless hours to prepare for this type of event. That’s not to say that it just might scare the %*@$ out of you. I bet that Chick-with-Attitude was even singing one octave higher. But now that it’s over, I have a feeling that it just strengthened that respect and will prepare you that much more for the next big storm. I’m so relieved to hear that you and EPL weathered it as well as you did, Jess. Now it’s important to catch up on that much needed sleep. I can’t wait to hear from you, but take all the time that you need to get the boat put back together and rest up before you write. I’ll sleep better tonight knowing that you made it through O.K.

Have fun, STAY SAFE and happy sailing.

Phewwwwww was my first thought. Jess and EPL are in one piece and still sailing on.

Don't scare me like that again Jess, my ticker can't take it! LOL

Thank goodness you and EPL were so well prepared. I bet it was a terrifying time for you, but I bet you kept your cool and focussed on getting through the storm.

You must have wanted to hug those dolphins when you saw them reappear again!

Well, all those who said you wouldn't be able to handle such seas must be eating their words right now!

Hi Jesse,

4 knockdowns| I was knocked down once while making sandwiches for the rest of the crew. I think it was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced, even worse than the Tower of Terror at Dreamworld. For you to experience 4 and carry on I can only say " I dips me lid to you"

I might add it took me over an hour later to scrape up the sandwich bits and ingredients from all over the galley.

Hope you are in a little more friendly waters for a while

It is beyond my imagining, how scary it must be to endure a relentless raging storm like that with all those knockdowns! The photographs of the approaching storm have me shivering with apprehension!! What a test of mental strength and sailing acuity...of which you have in spades it seems. My admiration grows with every blog Jess. I am in awe of you at your tender age and look forward to hearing all about this experience first hand when you are rested and able to put it into words for us. I must say I'm rather glad to be hearing all this after the fact, and know you are already recovering in more pleasant conditions. My mind boggles at the preparation that has gone into ensuring you and Ella's Pink Lady can handle whatever comes up. All kudos to your parents and the team and the sponsors that are helping to realize this moment in history, but most of all to you, the plucky gutsy, super intelligent, competant sailor and beautiful generous girl that the world is privileged to get to know and love!
Stay well, be safe and above all enjoy this ride of a lifetime Jess.

Oh shit Jessica, "wind gusts of up to 70 knots and a swell of 7-10 metres". Don't underestimate the Atlantic outside the Southern Ocean. I remember following the Volvo Ocean Race 2001 where the distance record per 24 hours was set in the North Atlantic, beating the Southern Ocean, but a dismasting for the boat with the female crew.

Glad you were making it nicely. Now we expect an excited text by you. But it is OK if you feel it was rough, becasue it seemed to have been that. All other circumnavigators (mostly middle age men) write about the bad conditions in gales or storms, and they don't seemed to have had hurricane gusts of 70 knots.

Dear Jesse!!!

WOW!!! Oh my gosh!!!! These Pre Storm Pics are awesome! (AUSSIE AWESOME!!!) I really hope that that's the worst of the storm, instead of just a sample of what's coming! Please be careful, we'd rather have you safely below, or protected by the dodger than to have more of those dramatic photos. We get the picture, the storm is fierce, the swells are huge!!! It's a real storm, and it scares the heck out of me! But, then, you have already proved yourself to be much braver than 99% of us, (probably 100%, however, I don't want to short change some of those adventurous bloggers who have shared wonderful courageous experiences with us.) So, Just howl back at the raging wind, and sail like you've never sailed before!

Please, Jesse, stay safe. Don't unclip one tether, until you're safely clipped onto another, or have two on at a time. (I do hope that you have multiple tethers.) And, I never heard of sailors wearing helmets, but I sure wish you had one to protect that lovely head of yours!

Our prayers, and our admiration, are your's tonight (this morning), and we will anxiously await news of your safely passing through this latest storm at sea!!!

I'm not sure I can stand this much fear for you, but, I know that you know what you're doing, and will stay safe and let Ella and her technology, and your own ability, bring you through the worst of it.

Please, no cooking on your stove, even if it is gimbaled . . . if you have to eat, just eat dry, cold stuff until the seas calm down! Not worth taking chances hurting yourself with EPL bouncing all over the South Atlantic Ocean!

My Prayers, Hugs, Squeezes are with you right now, and will continue until I hear that you're successfully out of the storm.

Love ya,

Carol Florida U.S.A.

Hey captain Jessica
Well what a night !!!!! I imagine it would have been more than a little daunting a big sea, hurricane force winds, dark and wet.

You are one heck of a sailor - WOW. Yet another challenge met head on. Great to hear you and EPL are both ok, and I imagine a good sleep is in order to get those batteries topped up.

Cant wait to read some more detail - did any of your gear on deck (winches etc) suffer damage, did you loose anything? was your wet seat on the side that copped the dunking?

Keep your spirits soaring high like those dolphins when they rise out of the water, keep rested when you can.

the dolphins would have been riding through the storm with you and EPL, once again being your charparone. They will continue to guide you the rest of the way.

Hi Jessica,

A Big "WELL DONE" on riding out the storm. Surely there can be no-one now who can doubt your sailing ability. I am also very much looking forward to how you describe this experience in your next blog!

(For all you landlubbers, you should realise that 70 knot winds equate to 130 km/hr, so our brave girl has certainly had an interesting time!)

It appears that only minor damage has been sustained by EPL and this once again proves the toughness and seaworthiness of the SS 34.

Hopefully Jessica, this will be the first and last of this type of event, but you have again proved what you are made of and all your fans around the world will be very proud of you!

The photos are so appreciated... those seas look seriously serious.

I wonder what you were feeling as you watched the sea rise like that.
What an experience! ...a true taste of the southern oceans, not to disappoint!
Has it left you feeling more confident, or even a bit exhilarated now that you are through it and safe? One of the friskier days of your journey to be sure, one never to be forgotten!

Knockdowns seem to be inevitable doing what you're doing. Everyone I've read who has done what you are doing has had them... but 4 in one storm...yikes!

Here's a toast to you for weathering that storm (hot chocolate) and here's a toast to the mighty southern ocean and the experience it gave you (thank you, that was really good, so no need to trouble yourself again). I wouldn't want to be your mum or dad waiting it out, so here's a toast to them (double strength chamomile tea).

So glad you and pink lady are safe.

Cooeee from South Australia, Jessica .....

WOW! What a ride you've just had out there on that wild ocean!

I'm SO glad to read the Latest News and to know you and EPL triumphed.

The only other time I've prayed as hard was when my son was deployed with our troops x 2!

Thankfully my prayers have been answered each time.

Continued safety for you Jesse, and hope for smoother seas here onwards.

Cheers from Here for now! :)

Hey Jesse,
I'm glad your OK and back into some better weather.
70 knot winds have to be experienced, its something you cant explain. Your definitely earning a great reputation for being a great sailor, and well deserved.

I think if most people new what the conditions were like they would be horrified, the photos sure help.
I bet you will be glad to get a bit further north and warm up a bit. I feel for your Mum and dad, they must be on the edge of there seat.

I remember before you left Sydney a reporter said you were petite, if he could only see you now, I bet he would eat his words. Take care.

Fair winds and following seas.

I was wondering what a knockdown was until the explanation and tried to imagine how hairy it was through that storm. Imagining it and experiencing it are two entirely different things, and what an experience for you.

8hrs of hell on the high seas
...wow! You are one helluva courageous young lady Jesse. Even tho you were secured into your wet-seat, of which I'm sooo pleased to hear, it would've been a seriously frightening experience, especially during the 'knockdowns'. Wow!..the mind boggles.

Sooo happy to know you and Ella's Pink Lady came out of it relatively unscathed, but the rest of the crew might need a bit of counselling after that traumatic experience :)

No doubt you will, or will have already surveyed EPL for damage. She is one tough cookie just like her captain. Hope everything's structurally sound.

Those pictures were ominous and awesome to see Jesse, but please don't put yourself at risk to satisfy our hunger for dramatics. We want ya back on terra firma complete with 'dorky hat' :)

Take care out there Captain Watson and get plenty of rest. Safe and secured please!

I was hoping you wouldnt have to weather any rogue waves, perfect storms etc, but i guess thats just wishful thinking and it was only a matter of time till you found yourself in such conditions. I think it would be marvelous to experience such conditions but i also think it would have been incredible scary there for a while. But you came thru it unscathed as i knew you and pink ella would.

I cant wait to read your next blog and hear your feeling thru it all.

Glad to hear the dolphins are back....im sure they are your good luck charms

To PWB--

Believe me there was no put-down intended, in any way. I am sorry that what I wrote came off that way.

I had to go back and read what I wrote, and re-read what you wrote, then re-read what I wrote again to try to understand "If you are going to blog a putdown to somebody, do it honestly....."

So, I'd like to rewrite what I said, attempting to be clearer, hoping I don't dig myself in any deeper.
Calling all Gods and Goddesses...
This of course assumes that I have an understanding of what was perceived as a putdown... is it the "but"?

Here's another try...

PWB: That was hilarious!
AND, after reading the part about twisting your aging torso to reach the enemy, your hair!... (your description was great conveying the funniest visual image)....I was smiling and laughing at the image, and the thought humorously came that many men with aging torsos would not not consider hair on their heads an enemy!

You see, I am older than your hypothetical wife (she's 55), and am with you on aging torso's (for us women, it gives new meaning to "down and out"). Just blame my verbal indiscretions on a senior moment!

So, can we make up?
And if you want to hypothetically take me out take me out for a virtual birthday dinner (since in Reality my birthday is in a few days... making your "hypothetical for the day" pretty funny!)... I promise not to wear a short dress (real, virtual, or otherwise, which is a relief, easy promise since I don't have one) or wear high heals (another sigh of relief, not having any of those either) or perfume (another sigh of relief...this is going to be pretty easy), but I can't pass on the bubble bath.

And, would you mind, my hypothetical dear, if we requested a pink Prius to take us on my hypothetical birthday outing?

Waiting on edge to see if I have succeeded in dispelling the adage
"the third time's the charm".

Jesse hi darl - WOW!! 70 knot winds and up to 10 m swell; now that's got to be a huge challenge with lots of butterflies, no doubt, renting your tummy for a few hours. The main thing is your OK and that is all that counts. You handled it well by all accounts and that's to your eternal credit - however, we have come to expect that from our Jesse. Nevertheless, it would have been scary like any form of uncertainty we experience for the first time. I'm pleased to know you were exercising safety first and please continue to do so. Being clipped on tightly is the only way to go darl. When I read the News Update believe me it's the first time ever my worry beards broke into a sweat. Nature is fickle and it's always the element of uncertainty that you must make allowance for.

Now that the conditions have improved I guess there is maintenance to do and I suspect you need a good rest. I also hope you are looking after yourself food-wise.

'til next time continue to exercise safety firs; and let me remind you what I had to say after rounding the Cape - that another Silly or a Dolphin would watch over you and I was right. The Dolphins must be impressed with you - and why wouldn't they!! Take care precious girl; always thinking of you out there.

Jessica, In 24 hours you crossed
49 South x 49 West, crossed the 11,000nm mark and weather all the ocean could throw at you with knockdowns and waves the size of 5 story buildings.

You go you good thing !

It's scary at the time but once passed I bet you're glad to have experienced the storm and everything came out the other side in reasonable shape (how's the motley crew members).

I can just imagine the state your Mother must have been in while you were going through that storm and waiting for the call to say all was well.

This may now take all doubt from the minds of those who said you shouldn't go, including our Premier. we don't hear from them anymore for some reason.

You've more than proven you are a "REAL" Sailor and ELP is a "REAL" Yacht and you can take from the ocean as good as it gives.

I suppose you'll be busy for a couple of days now checking all ropes for wear marks, fixtures, fittings and you also now have a reason to clean up the galley. at least clear a path through to the bunk.

I spent some time on a big fishing trawler and have seen the seas you went through. we didn't have wet chairs but just hung on to what ever and we also had nets on the bottom when our storm hit. it makes it interesting when the massive weight of a trailing net is holding the boat back as a rouge waves hit. some waves you sort of go through and that checks the boat for leaks quite well.

You'd have to agree that the most interesting parts are the rogue waves and when you are sitting in the trough of a wave looking up at a massive wall of water that towers above mast and think how am I going to scale that. then there's the sitting on top of a big wave looking down and bracing for the ride.

When looking up at the wall of water you realise just how small you are doesn't it ?. when you consider the waves are roughly twice as high as you boat is long will give the bloggers an idea of what you faced.

I and everyone else are getting so impressed with your skills and make us very, very proud (Queensland more so). you continually amaze us with new events and handle everything in your stride.

I'm most impressed with you still having the attitude that the ocean and mother nature have to be treated with respect.

How'd the fishing go ? and did you try the floating line for surface fish ?. there's always surface fish chasing bait fish schools in the Atlantic ocean.

Cheers Jesse, great work and I bet dear diary has a big entry today.

Good speed, good seas and take care

Heya Jess and Crew ,Jess if you can read this with all the bobbing up and down like a teabag,I know 'knockdown'is between more than 1/4 but less than 1/2 of a complete 'rollover',which is the one I'm hoping you don't have to endure!!I'm curious though, and correct me if I'm wrong, but, once you've been hit,I expect the bum of EPL is riding up the wave and the pointy bit is paddling around in air kind of laying on her side, but with the trough of the(previous) wave still down there and the potential to dig in and go right over,-..hey?? Wild Stuff!!! Oh well you'll just have to stay indoors on days like that and catch up on all the blogs...Happy Reading

Hello Jessica,
I am very glad to hear that you came through that storm with only minor damage, it shows how well you have prepared and maintained EPL. 4 knockdowns in the 1 storm must have been more than you expected, but it must be comforting to know that EPL, will pop back up and keep you safe.
I am sure that other people such as Don McIntyre and Jessie Martin would have told you that a knockdown is pretty much inevitable in the amazing journey you are undertaking, and my guess is that your confidence in EPL has gone up 100%.

This one is for all the naysayers and critics out there: Jessica has just survived hurricane force winds in the southern Atlantic Ocean in a storm that raged for eight hours and resulted in four knockdowns, yet she has come out of it like a total champion. So, do the naysayers have anything intelligent they'd like to offer on this subject? Or are they just going to sit there - like usual - with the cigarette in one hand and the can of beer in the other in their cosy armchairs and rant about this incredibly brave young lady's inability to negotiate her solo circumnavigation of the world?

As for Jessica, congratulations for the umpteenth time! You are an inspiration and a beacon of courage!!!

Hi Jessica
Congratulations for passing your 11,000nm mark, and for enduring the clobbering you had to face in your overnight battle with the Atlantic. The “Latest Report” indicates that you and Ella’s Pink Lady handled it well – much as we have come to expect from you.

I hope you and Ella did not sustain very much damage and that you have now been able to clean up “the mess”, as it is described in the report.

Your photos certainly illustrate the fury of the sea, and I don’t think the spray marks on the lens detract from them. They will be photos you will be able to look back on and proudly say “I sailed through that!”

I look forward to your more detailed update when you have time to write after you have restored Ella’s Pink Lady and yourself to normality – and prepared for any future Atlantic storms.

Enjoy the lighter conditions while you can.

Hi Jesse you young salty dog!!! We commentors sit in our warm homes and if we have never experienced what you have been through can only imagine what it must be like. The great pictures don't do justice to the real situation. Jessica, your are like iron that is repeatedly thrust into the kilm, heated up to a glowing red hot, taken out, pounded on an anvil and becomes stronger each time. 4 knockdowns due to a series of rogue waves... That is a warning for everyone who wants to repeat this and thinks anyone can do it. I am glad Jessica is safe and sound and I hope she can continue her dangerous and most challenging journey and the yacht doesn't have to be repaired. But after 4 knockdowns I am afraid it will have to be repaired.

Anyway Jessica good luck on your way and stay strong! We are proud of you.

gsimmons said...

Hi Jessica
WOW! your first knock down, I bet you had your heart in your mouth for a while, with the first one, did it come without any warning, it sure scares the crap out of you. I have only been involved in 1 and 1/2, I was on the helm and all of a sudden I'm free falling and crashed into one of the crew setting opposite, a few bruises, but ok. It felt like ages before she righted herself, but it was not that long at all.
Did you have any sail up at all, maybe a storm jib?
With your first real big storm I reckon you are real proud of yourself, you should be, we are. I had a crew of 6 to help with the clean up, you are all by yourself.
Will you be heading a little further north to get out of this storm corridor?
WE all will be waiting with baited breath for your next blog, and some more great photos.
So keep having fun and most of all KEEP SAFE.

You must be buggered Jess! Full on adrenalin, muscles, fear and nerves pumping for 12 hours or so.

Would love to say get a good nights sleep sweet heart but you can't!

Don't drop your guard! Wake up and don't let your self sleep through any alarm! Maybe test one on a timer at half the expected time it's meant to go off!

You're living with the dolphins and in their environment. Research how they sleep, think about it all the time and you might wake up easier!

You can catch up slowly on sleep with out going too deep if you wind down slowly! Don't read or stress to much and just move slowly and carefully!

Slow and steady wins the race!

Heaps of food a fluids Jess!

That would have been so awesome!

I hope the pink lady is ok!

So proud of you!

With you all the way!

Billy!

Hi Jessica,
I sense/hear a standing ovation and a thunderous round of applause for you and EPL from your Shore Team, bloggers, us wannabe sailors and real sailors !! What a ride that must have been sitting in the wet seat.

Yesterday, I checked PW and saw the storm building and hoped you weren't near the centre where the colour purple showed for the first time in awhile...fancy experienceing 70knot=130kmh winds and 7-10m seas...WOW.

You must be fearless....

Oh, just a little info on dolphins
that I heard on CBC radio here,
Quote:
"Humans, great apes, dolphins and elephants, well-known for their superior intelligence and complex social systems, are thought to possess the highest forms of empathy and altruism in the animal kingdom," Diana Reiss, of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, and co-author of the study, said in a media release.

I feel sure the dolphins recognize the superior intelligence of the young lady sailing along in EPL.
Be safe and enjoy a little rest.

Ozca,
from the great Bras d'Or Lakes.

I hope you are ok and didnt get any injuries from the knockdowns - I imagine that is probably one of the longest nights you have had, each minute would feel like an hour.

Keep positive, chewing away the miles, sunshine and calmer waters will greet you soon, the dolphins are at your side for encouragement, and the whole damn world is with captain Jessica and EPL - arms united from one side of the globe to the other to give you strength as you need it.

So proud of you, just need to know you havent sustained any injuries, and EPL is in good shape. Look after each other.

Fairer winds for tomorrow and bright blue skies

Sounds like you and EPL coped really well, it's true, your tedious hard work is paying off. As Australia day 2010 dawns, I think I can safely say who my hero is for the year. You truly are an inspiration, especially to fellow 16 year Queenslanders. Loving your journey and praying for your safety and a safe journey home.
Tight lines,

Once again all I can say is WOW. 3 knockdowns and you calmly state, "We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK."
You must be the bravest person in the world, or at least in the south Atlantic.

Hi Jessica,
Do you think the person who chose the colours to indicate wind speed and wave heights on www.passageweather.com has a sense of humour?

Pink is the maximum wind and wave height colour :-)

I have no concept of how you can sail in 70 knots. My VJ dinghy regularly had at least 10 knockdowns in a race with a 10-15 knot breeze. You are awesome.

I have just read the news about your storm experiences. You must have been really concerned at times during those eight hours. Thank goodness for the strength of your boat and equipment, and too for your own fortitude. Yours continues to be an amazing story. Keep well and continue safely onwards to home.

Captain Watson,

I'm sorry that you got hammered. Four rogue waves--that's four too many.

The Atlantic Ocean, apparently, isn't going to let you pass easily. Let's hope you've been through the worst.

After you've cleaned up EPL and had a long rest yourself, please let us know the details.

List of damages?
Are your electronics still workng?
How long did the storm last?
Was it dark or light?
What's a wet-seat and where is it located?
How wet did you get?
Did the cabin stay dry?
Are you ok?
How scared were you?
etc.
etc.

Well, you can't turn back now, Jesse. But it sounds like you've really been baptized--FOUR TIMES!

Take care of yourself and know that our hearts are in that wet-seat with you.

Thanks for the pics.

Fair winds,

Richard Lathrop

Hey Jess,

You really are an amazing woman (I keep saying that!!), I could not imagine going through an ordeal like that, I've heard about others going through it too but to actually be there would to me be terrifying, to say the least. You are an amazing woman!!

I'm just hanging to read your account of it in your next blog. My idea of excitement is doing some four wheel driving up in the forestry behing Kenilworth next Tuesday (Australia Day) with some family and friends, seems pretty lame in comparison with what you are doing!

Jess, keep amazing us, but keep safe. I continue to pray for your safety and wisdom as you face whatever the seas throw at you.
May God watch over you out there and protect you.

God bless,

I am so glad to read that you and EPL are ok. Four knockdowns alone in the middle of the ocean. OMG how scary is that! I hope you have some less damanding days to recover now.

Hiya Jesse,

Hope you are catching up on some rest. Was hoping to hear from you but I do understand you have a fair bit on at the moment.

"knockdown’ is when the mast goes below horizontal and into the sea"...my eyes were bleeding when I read this. Below horizontal… four times….

I believe, as armchair supporter of your journey, I had lulled myself into a complete sense of security, after old man Cape was ticked off. The weather certainly dictates to the ocean in terms of “how and when”, doesn’t it.

So glad it has settled some, you are so very brave and while EPL may not have liked that very much, she will always rise to the occasion, as you with her.

All my very best to you, support crew, family. Preparation immaculate. The news described a harrowing time and some damage, can’t wait to hear from you. Have been and will be thinking about you heaps. Take care, Paula

Oh Jesse,

You and EPL are such a great team. I was reading Abby Sunderland's latest blog as she leaves in a little over 6 hours and a fellow blogger said that you had been hit by a storm, but that you were okay!!!! "Whew", I thought.

I was on your website as quick as a flash and am so relieved to hear that you are okay. I must thank the good Lorn for being so faithful and answering my prayers in my asking to keep you safe.

It sounded scary how it described you having a "knockdown". You won't want too many of those.

I hope that you are able to fix the minor damage to EPL. Get your hardworking crew on deck. I'm sure they'll lend you a helping hand! :-)

Will look forward to hearing all about your adrenalin rushing time you had through the storm.

Take care my dear. Once again well done getting through this challenging time. Keep safe and big hugs to you. Jan (Auckland, New Zealand)

To Susan of Melbourne....what a beautiful statement of the facts, it is hard to embellish on what you have said any further....

But I will say a few words....

After having a very quick read of most posts, up to Susan's post, I just feel that the gravity of these "knockdowns" as it is termed are a very serious event, all manner of things could have gone WRONG, to have had Four of these Knockdowns is one more than what Jesse Martin ever had, correct me if I'm wrong!....

I've been north of Melbourne most of the day but my thoughts were often on you young Jess, and rightly so it seems, just an hour ago we that is my Sister my Niece and me mum were huddled around the Laptop reading the latest News and we were all very concerned, I had goose bumps on top of goose bumps just thinking about your first knockdown and then we continued on to read about another three!!....Jess Jess Jess....we know you wanted to experience this, we know you didn't want to roll up into Sydney Harbor without some "Battle Scars"....but please no more Knockdowns Jesse....we understand that the S&S 34 has this built in self righting characteristic and thank god it does but this is still a very serious event, I'm sorry I'm just shocked that it has actually happened, I just thought with all the "smooth" sailing you've had so far that we just were hoping the rest of your voyage would without incidence...it just goes to show...

So I shall end by repeating the last part of Susan's message and that is:-

"but most of all to you, the plucky gutsy, super intelligent, competent sailor and beautiful generous girl that the world is privileged to get to know and love!"

Jesse...please no more knockdowns....one is enough!

All my love....Jessica....I can't wait to read about this new experience in your own words!!

Wow Jesse, that's scary and exciting at the same time. I had no idea what a knockdown was before today but to go through one sounds really scary, and going through 4 sounds terrifying. I am so glad you made it through the storm alright and will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jesse

I knew you were headed for some pretty foul weather but wow to be hit by 4 rogue waves, Facing those walls of water coming at you is just unimaginable. Most sailors would never face one I should imagine.

Could some one who has sailing experience please explain to this land lubber what a wet seat is and why Jesse remained tethered to it. Thankyou.

After so long at sea Jesse when you do come ashore you will suffer from 'landsickness' lol I guess the first few days on land wont be real fun getting use to a steady surface.

I prayed real hard for you when I knew you were heading for some bad weather and I think I will keep it up.

I am so very glad you are safe pet. You have 45 minute cat naps and me I can not keep awake Doc thinks I have Ross river fever in any case spend most of my days on and off a sleep.

Take care Jesse and keep tethered well and eat well.
Love and hugs

Hi Jessica,

After reading the latest news update about the storm, four knockdowns, 70 knot (80 MPH) winds all I can do is say WOW.

I found myself thinking back to September and October of 2009 when I was reading all of the negative naysaying flatulence on other blogs and forums. I bookmarked a few of the more virulent forums and I now find them strangely silent. Hummmm, oh well, I guess their computers are in the shop being repaired. But no worries mate, soon they will be here soon to speak and write of your lack of experience.

Safe sailing and Godspeed

Hi Jessica,
I’m sitting at my computer, just read the report, and I don’t know what to say.
Wow, four (4) knockdowns, I couldn’t help it, I lost it, just thinking of you being tossed around in the cabin was just to much for me. I know you were belted in, but there’s still violent motions that you’re experiencing.
Oh My God, I have to pull myself together. Can’t think, just writing in spurts, whew, very much out of control. I know it’s over right now, and you’re cruising at a nice ten (10) knot breeze with a three (3) metre swell, but as I read the report from the support team I could visualize what was going on in the cabin, and I got scared for you. They explained what a ‘knockdown’ was, and that scared the hell out of me. To imagine the mast below horizontal level, and where that puts you, and what that does to you, in the cabin, and how you felt emotionally, that’s just hard to handle. I know, I know, you’re safe and that’s all that matters, but damn that was rough.
God knows Jessica, I am so proud of you. But please, no more of them.

“We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK. It’s time like this when you realise why good preparation of the boat is so important. She handled it well,”
And let’s not forget the preparation of the Skipper, I’m sure all the training you went through kicked in and had you thinking properly. I’m just so glad that you were belted in. Wouldn’t expect anything less.

Knowing you, after it was all over you probably had a little giggle, didn’t you? Well, good for you, you wanted some adventure, I just hope that’s enough for you, I don’t think I can take any more. lol…….
I’m glad that EPL handled it well, as did you, she’s one tough boat, I remember reading once how she had weight in her keel that would allow her to upright herself if she did go over. I imagine this was a factor in this particular incident.

I will be back, but right now (by the way Good Morning) I’m going to get my brekkie (like that) and read all the posts. At least I don’t have any sleep in my eyes. Ha, ha. It all got washed away. Yeah.
Again, I am so proud of you, hugs, hugs and more hugs, and a few more after that. lol….. Now I’m getting giddy.

Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.
Michael (75) from Kingwood, WV

P.S. The pictures were great, but I was already scared spitless?!?!?!? lol

Thank you for the good news, and by the way for the pics! Even the pre-storm sea was scary already! With such winds, we don't dare driving on a road, not to say about sailing! 4 knock-downs is worse than what I was fearing... and up you are! A true CHAMPION, Captain Jesse! Champtain Jesse, maybe?
I ordered two bottles of Ruinart pink champagne for you and Ella, to be delivered in Crows Nest. Though, I am fearing that EPL might not drink alcohol at all? If it were the case, you could either wash her with it (not very efficient maybe, but certainly good smells and it should help her when you want to slalom across buoys, or offer a drink to your crew, the fluffy one first of course.

Whew, I feel relieved somehow. I felt it was too demanding that you could do it, all around, without meeting some dreadful violent storm at least once or twice. Now it's over. There might be a second one in the Indian Southern Ocean, but the odds are less now.

Anyway -it's easy to say it after the battle-, it is probably a good thing you had to experience that kind of roller-coaster. First, it will shut the trap of the possible last naysayers. Second, it will eradicate the next breed of viper tongues, saying that you were just lucky not to have met a big storm. Third, it will give your achievement even a higher value. Fourth, you gained a new experience from it. Fifth, it proves that you are not only a good sailor, but a great one. Your legend is sailing on with you.

I would like to greet S&S for their undomitable Nr34, Don McIntyre for his wise choice, and one more all thepeople involved in EPL's preparation.
As often, the victory has been forget in training.
But it has been achieved on the Atlantic field, and our bravest of all skippers is included in the praise!

BLOODY GOOD JOB, Miss Watson!
As our Workerbev types so well: {{{HUGS}}}
