Below are some pics Jessica captured before the big storm. For more information, please go to the Latest News section of Jessica's website at: www.jessicawatson.com.au
I have enjoyed immensely your voyage to date. Glad you made it through the storm in good shape. Hope the rest of your trip is uneventful and there are no more "knockdowns." Must have been scary belted to your seat in that weather. God speed from a Texas sea-sailor wannabe.
JESS, the great Atlantic has welcomed you in a timely manner, you and Ella have passed the first test. we look forward to your next blog...and hearing first hand about your experience....My ? is, how bloody loud was it. Were singing..."I GET KNOCKED DOWN>>>BUT I GET UP AGAIN>>>>>>>"
Just had a look at the pre-storm pics. Wow, the sea is a bit bitter today with that storm hangin about. I noticed in another blog that you should be out of these conditions soon, I hope that is true.
Thinking about you as always, sending positive vibe and will look forward to your next post, take care. Cheers Paula
Take care out there Jess. I hope EPL did not suffer too much damage. Congratulations for reaching the 11,000klm mark. Just about ready for the homeward lap.
Glad to see you made it through okay!! I've been watching and reading ever since you left Sydney. Hope the water and weather perk up for you in the coming days! :o)
OMG Jessie I hope you are going to be alright, I know that you are an experienced sailor, but for me just seeing that it makes me feel sick, I am thinking of you hang on tight YOU ARE AMAZING, have a good ride, get those crew working LOL God speed (not to fast) Maxine and Colin Maroochydore
Hey Jesse, hope you and EPL are still fine after the storm. The waves really look huge. Wish you keep well cute girl and much more convenient weather and sailing conditions. All the best wishes from Markus / Bremerhaven / Germany.
WOW JESS - 4 knockdowns! What a ride - I'm sure you're happy that's over. Just keep thinking of that hot bath that you're going to soak in when you get home.
I'm glad you're safe and we will keep you in our prayers . . . - joe -
Wow. This had to arrive sometime I guess. Excellent news You both survived intact. What a sturdy little boat, and what a composed and gutsy little sailor.
Hi Jess, OMG!! Girl how scary for you in that storm, I have been waiting and watching for news since the shore crew posted about the storm in the news item. I am so relieved to now know that you and EPL are safe. The sea rolls are so scary especially with winds and ocean at that force, god the angels and dolphins have kept you both safe once again. Thank you to your wonderful shore crew for keeping us updated as we all love you too much ( could never be too much love)and I think it is time to hurry home to Australia now jesse. Stay clipped on and stay safe your in our thoughts and prayers always. Until next time take care always
Thanks for posting such wonderful photos! I love them because they help me understand what the ocean is all about and they add an extra dimension to the lovely pictures you paint in your blogs. I was happy to hear you got to have a snooze in the sun on the deck of EPL. That woulod have been so refreshing. And to top it off with dolphins and a special sunset - magic. Life can offer us such wonderful moments if we stop to appreciate them. I hope the storms don't throw too much at you and that you don't get bounced around too much. Talk about extremes! Sumbaking one day and storms the next. Tomorrow I am going to have a go at making bread in my wood oven. I wonder if it will be as good as EPL bread?
Australia Day is coming up quickly, do you have a compilation of Aussie songs for the day?
Commander Watson, I can't believe it (0) comments. I have to apologize for spelling Sydney Harbor wrong in my last comment It was 1:30 in the morning (my time). I'm amazed that your sailing the oceans of the World on (45) minute cat naps, & I can't even spell Sydney Harbor at 1:30 in the morning. Best of luck in the South Atlantic.
awesome! you are one amazing sailor jessica watson! proud doesn't even begin to express how i feel. you'll certainly have some stories to tell when you get back. keep up the good work and stay safe out there jesse as i know you will.. your friend fumes.
Hi Jess, Glad you and EPL survived the storm intact. The storm looked a bit nasty on weather passage. Well rest up Jess. Take care and hooked on. Tim and Rosie Caboolture
Congratulations getting through the storm Jess! Well done! Those knock downs sound so scary. Hope you sail into much better weather real fast and the dophins stay around to keep you company.
WHEW!!!! That’s one experience that I imagine you would have preferred to skip, but what an incredible chapter to your saga. Ella’s Pink Lady just proved what a great blue water boat the S&S 34 is. But more than anything, you proved what an accomplished blue water sailor you are. Going through that type of experience proves why the years of preparation that you went through are so necessary. The sea should always be respected more than feared, and it’s because of that tremendous respect that you put in the tireless hours to prepare for this type of event. That’s not to say that it just might scare the %*@$ out of you. I bet that Chick-with-Attitude was even singing one octave higher. But now that it’s over, I have a feeling that it just strengthened that respect and will prepare you that much more for the next big storm. I’m so relieved to hear that you and EPL weathered it as well as you did, Jess. Now it’s important to catch up on that much needed sleep. I can’t wait to hear from you, but take all the time that you need to get the boat put back together and rest up before you write. I’ll sleep better tonight knowing that you made it through O.K.
Dear Jessica -- I just read the news story on your main website. That sounds pretty scary. Now you have a giant OMG I DID IT story to add to your others.
You wont be bored with good weather now!
Hope you are not feeling too churned up. We are thinking of you. : )
My goodness, I don't look at your blog for a day and look what I missed! My heart was in my throat when I saw those photos, and I clicked right away to read the updates from your shore crew. Phewwwwww was my first thought. Jess and EPL are in one piece and still sailing on.
Don't scare me like that again Jess, my ticker can't take it! LOL
Thank goodness you and EPL were so well prepared. I bet it was a terrifying time for you, but I bet you kept your cool and focussed on getting through the storm.
You must have wanted to hug those dolphins when you saw them reappear again!
Well, all those who said you wouldn't be able to handle such seas must be eating their words right now!
Way to go Jess!!!
I hope you don't hit anymore storms like that one.
Hi Jessica, We've just been sitting back in the comfort of our lounge room watching Roger Federer win his second round match in the Australia Open not knowing you had just been through that horrific storm. Very glad to read it has departed and you are Ok and EPL is still strong and rearing to go! It's great to see on The Voyage map that you are definitely "on your way home". Take care, safe sailing and Happy Australia Day for Tuesday. Gary.
Wow Jesse those pics you took before the storm are awesome. You are one gutsy girl and I am in awe of your courage. I hope it wasn't too bad for you. Congrats on passing the 11,000km mark!! I hope the storm has passed and the winds have died down now so you can enjoy some calmer weather and see to any important jobs you need to do. Has the weather gotten warmer now? Take care 'til next time. Jo Sydney
4 knockdowns| I was knocked down once while making sandwiches for the rest of the crew. I think it was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced, even worse than the Tower of Terror at Dreamworld. For you to experience 4 and carry on I can only say " I dips me lid to you"
I might add it took me over an hour later to scrape up the sandwich bits and ingredients from all over the galley.
Hope you are in a little more friendly waters for a while Godspeed Peter, Gold Coast.
Geez, I should have kept my fingers crossed no? I can't imagine what that must have been like. Well, I can IMAGINE it, so I guess I'll cross 'em again just to make sure everything keeps on being ok. keep up rte good wojk my deae! You aew pretty cokl!,

You are one of the best blogger. You are consistent. Give us updates almost everyday. Now you up it up one notch coz even on bad weather you are updating us with your blog. Thanks I dont have to worry now. Pictures are great and exciting. Keep it coming girl.
Tomorrow I'll be seeing Abby depart from the marina.
It is beyond my imagining, how scary it must be to endure a relentless raging storm like that with all those knockdowns! The photographs of the approaching storm have me shivering with apprehension!! What a test of mental strength and sailing acuity...of which you have in spades it seems. My admiration grows with every blog Jess. I am in awe of you at your tender age and look forward to hearing all about this experience first hand when you are rested and able to put it into words for us. I must say I'm rather glad to be hearing all this after the fact, and know you are already recovering in more pleasant conditions. My mind boggles at the preparation that has gone into ensuring you and Ella's Pink Lady can handle whatever comes up. All kudos to your parents and the team and the sponsors that are helping to realize this moment in history, but most of all to you, the plucky gutsy, super intelligent, competant sailor and beautiful generous girl that the world is privileged to get to know and love! Stay well, be safe and above all enjoy this ride of a lifetime Jess.
Hi Jesse, Fantastic news to know you have made it through that rough bit....we have been thinking of you. So relieved that the nasty 8 hour storm has passed......you are AMAZING. Well Done!!
Oh shit Jessica, "wind gusts of up to 70 knots and a swell of 7-10 metres". Don't underestimate the Atlantic outside the Southern Ocean. I remember following the Volvo Ocean Race 2001 where the distance record per 24 hours was set in the North Atlantic, beating the Southern Ocean, but a dismasting for the boat with the female crew.
Glad you were making it nicely. Now we expect an excited text by you. But it is OK if you feel it was rough, becasue it seemed to have been that. All other circumnavigators (mostly middle age men) write about the bad conditions in gales or storms, and they don't seemed to have had hurricane gusts of 70 knots.
Abby Sunderland departs today 11.30AM California time, 19.30 UTC, 06.30 Sydney time.
Ben Larsson, Sweden (its 6.20 AM Saturday, maybe i'm Jessaholic)
Wow! You're amazingly brave to be able to survive 8 hours of scary waves! My Dad just explained to me that our house is 23 feet high... so that means that the waves you were sailing on were taller than my house! What is it like to have your mast go all the way into the water... 4 times!!?
Good luck with the rest of your journey! From Kirby
Oh, my God! is about all I can say while summing up what a tough critter you really are. Those sorts of storms are what you prepared for but yet they hit us observers hard and stringently.
Your having come through it all makes you one of the most respected people on the planet. You could have lain weeping in your bed, but you took it on the chin, and just pushed on forward.
Wow...good job Jess, as usual - I say it yet again...you are an amazing and brave young lady. The thought of you out there all alone (except for your mate EPL) facing such a huge storm and four knockdown brought my heart to my mouth!!! But no matter - Jess the super sailor has "weathered the storm". Fantastic! Thank you so much for sending the photos over the past days - another amazing feat - especially taking photos for us back home while you are facing such weather. What a blessing. We are all ever so proud of you Jess. And when I saw the photo of you and EPL from your mum and dad's flyover looking so so small it brought tears to my eyes. Remember looking small but achieving BIG. Thank you to all for sharing that with us. I keeep praying for you little lamb - bless you! Love from Nan Mim
Now that is extreme sailing 3downs and still OK amazing. Great to hear you are both doing well EPL is also quite a lady like her skipper, could you tell us what sail area you had up during the storm or were you on just bare poles. enjoy your rest. Safe Passage Brian Hervey Bay,QLD
WOW!!! Oh my gosh!!!! These Pre Storm Pics are awesome! (AUSSIE AWESOME!!!) I really hope that that's the worst of the storm, instead of just a sample of what's coming! Please be careful, we'd rather have you safely below, or protected by the dodger than to have more of those dramatic photos. We get the picture, the storm is fierce, the swells are huge!!! It's a real storm, and it scares the heck out of me! But, then, you have already proved yourself to be much braver than 99% of us, (probably 100%, however, I don't want to short change some of those adventurous bloggers who have shared wonderful courageous experiences with us.) So, Just howl back at the raging wind, and sail like you've never sailed before!
Please, Jesse, stay safe. Don't unclip one tether, until you're safely clipped onto another, or have two on at a time. (I do hope that you have multiple tethers.) And, I never heard of sailors wearing helmets, but I sure wish you had one to protect that lovely head of yours!
Our prayers, and our admiration, are your's tonight (this morning), and we will anxiously await news of your safely passing through this latest storm at sea!!!
I'm not sure I can stand this much fear for you, but, I know that you know what you're doing, and will stay safe and let Ella and her technology, and your own ability, bring you through the worst of it.
Please, no cooking on your stove, even if it is gimbaled . . . if you have to eat, just eat dry, cold stuff until the seas calm down! Not worth taking chances hurting yourself with EPL bouncing all over the South Atlantic Ocean!
My Prayers, Hugs, Squeezes are with you right now, and will continue until I hear that you're successfully out of the storm.
Good luck Jessica! Rather you than me!!! But you're a mighty brave lass you know! Fancy the boat tipping so far over!!! Gee! I'd be downright scared!!!!
Look forward to another interesting update when you get time.
SO thankful you survived such a horrific storm, and hope EPL didn't take on too much damage. Hopefully, you'll be able to catch up on some well deserved rest! What or where is the wet seat you were strapped into during the entire storm? Did you have the hull completely sealed? I just cannot imagine... you are so brave. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
Hey captain Jessica Well what a night !!!!! I imagine it would have been more than a little daunting a big sea, hurricane force winds, dark and wet.
You are one heck of a sailor - WOW. Yet another challenge met head on. Great to hear you and EPL are both ok, and I imagine a good sleep is in order to get those batteries topped up.
Cant wait to read some more detail - did any of your gear on deck (winches etc) suffer damage, did you loose anything? was your wet seat on the side that copped the dunking?
Keep your spirits soaring high like those dolphins when they rise out of the water, keep rested when you can.
the dolphins would have been riding through the storm with you and EPL, once again being your charparone. They will continue to guide you the rest of the way. 11,000 NM - CONGRATULATIONS !!
Oh Jesse dear, we just couldn’t imagine how frightening those knockdowns must be, especially in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and over a period of 8 hours, but with your preparation and support you have come through it very well. Once this storm has passed, clean up and have all the rest you need, it will be a great chapter to read in your book. Stay safe dear girl and Go-Girl-Go.

The more I read your blogs, the more I think you are such an amazing girl. Cool, calm and collected and an amazing spirit. An inspiration to all. Been with you since day 1 and checking your site a couple of times per day.
A Big "WELL DONE" on riding out the storm. Surely there can be no-one now who can doubt your sailing ability. I am also very much looking forward to how you describe this experience in your next blog!
(For all you landlubbers, you should realise that 70 knot winds equate to 130 km/hr, so our brave girl has certainly had an interesting time!)
It appears that only minor damage has been sustained by EPL and this once again proves the toughness and seaworthiness of the SS 34.
Hopefully Jessica, this will be the first and last of this type of event, but you have again proved what you are made of and all your fans around the world will be very proud of you!
You are a brilliant little Aussie. Your bravery and pure life determination inspire me. Keep your chin up, and remember to stay safe always... it's just water, you can beat it!!
Glad to hear you came through the storm ok and EPL Wow 4 knockdowns it would be a bit messy Now your friends are back keeping an eye out for you I can breathe easy Stay safe Little Traveller
This was written for you sometime ago: "I am not afraid of storms, for I'm learning to sail my ship." (Louisa May Alcott) You have learned even more through this particular storm. Well done Jessica.
WOW! The mast actually hits the water! How does EPL right herself... it must be a balance thing... I would be pushing insanity! Jess... I have said it before... you are amazing! Just know that you went Knockdown terrified me.
The good news is.. that was probably as ruff as it can get... and you came out in good order. To a sailor of your caliber and one who has a passion for the sea you must have been loving it... Kinda... especially when it calmed down.. LOL
I am thankful we had no idea what you were going through until it was over. That is so scary! The world is hugging you Jess.
Whoa... I saw that storm on PW yesterday, and tried to guess where you were compared to where it was... my guessing was too hopeful!
The photos are so appreciated... those seas look seriously serious.
I wonder what you were feeling as you watched the sea rise like that. What an experience! ...a true taste of the southern oceans, not to disappoint! Has it left you feeling more confident, or even a bit exhilarated now that you are through it and safe? One of the friskier days of your journey to be sure, one never to be forgotten!
Knockdowns seem to be inevitable doing what you're doing. Everyone I've read who has done what you are doing has had them... but 4 in one storm...yikes!
Here's a toast to you for weathering that storm (hot chocolate) and here's a toast to the mighty southern ocean and the experience it gave you (thank you, that was really good, so no need to trouble yourself again). I wouldn't want to be your mum or dad waiting it out, so here's a toast to them (double strength chamomile tea).
just read on "latest news" about the storm you encountered, 4 knockdowns but you Captain Jessica EPL came through basically unscathed, saw the pics, those waves would scare the living daylights out of me, good on you Jess you handled it so well, once again demonstrating your amazing sailing skills seems nothing fazes you out there on the ocean, and now the winds have abated and your dolphin guides have returned, actually they never left you, they were there all along looking after our precious Jessica.
To PWB,Peter Bush love your posts, they are halarious!!! loved your post about being married to Susan of Oregon
to susan of Oregon - love your posts too
susan in Melbourne - your character pictures are amazing, always look forward to the next one.
To GL Guy from Mitchigan - loved your list of things for Jess to do when she gets home.
Oh well Jess, wishing you smooth seas and fair winds as you transverse the Atlantic on your journey back to Sydney, sail on sailor girl.
I've experienced hurricane force wind on land, it took my neighbour's roof off and the noise of debris slamming against the windows plus the wind roar was just plain frightening. To get that at sea, plus being tossed up & down 7-10 meters & being flattened several times, well, it's something I'd never want to experience. You've got the guts Jessica & you've earned the glory.
Pleased to hear you came through it ok, it must have been terrifying so say the least. Best wishes for some calmer weather so that both you and Ella's Pink Lady can recover. Judi,Sydney
Hello Jessica, so glad to hear the good news, that you passed safely through this fierce storm! 70 knots and 10 m seas....can't even imagine it. Congratulations on reaching 11 000 nm. Well done! Thank you shore team for updating us, that Jessica is doing fine!
Just read your latest news about your storm. Glad you are now on the other side of it and no major damage. At least you know how you both handle such seas. Would it be the worst you have ever been in?
Still totally committed to checking on you every day.
B E S A F E B E F A S T , J E S S I C A I S A L E G E N D. get your south atlantic weather from alistair then switch to graham on the ham weather net regards from the yacht coconut
Gawd Jesse, So glad you have been able to 'ride this out' so well (isn't it perhaps a 'nice thing' for you to be able to say to those that doubted you, prior to your departure, for you to be able to say "well check this out" !!)
We continue to 'live your dream with you' !! (so proud of all you are doing ... and your team !!)
Well done on keeping your s%$t together and getting through the storm. At least now you have a tale to tell of a bigger than big storm - a test of your abilities and one that sounds like you have come out with an A+. Probably what your were expected some 1000Nm back hey!
All the best, hope you have the chance to rest up a bit now. Stay safe Jesse.
Hi Jesse, My stomach churned just looking at the swell Congratulations on handling the storm with such expertise, you are truly amazing. Keep well and safe. God Bless Christine Gold Coast
Hey Jesse, I'm glad your OK and back into some better weather. 70 knot winds have to be experienced, its something you cant explain. Your definitely earning a great reputation for being a great sailor, and well deserved.
I think if most people new what the conditions were like they would be horrified, the photos sure help. I bet you will be glad to get a bit further north and warm up a bit. I feel for your Mum and dad, they must be on the edge of there seat.
I remember before you left Sydney a reporter said you were petite, if he could only see you now, I bet he would eat his words. Take care.
Oooooooo Jessica, hold on tight. Ella Pink Lady is sure your best friend. So glad you got through that terrible storm. That sea looked a nightmare waiting to happen and it must have felt like a living nightmare waiting for that storm to pass but you got through it. WELL DONE!!
Was just reading the news about the knockdowns, Jess. Incredible and amazing, but congratulations for coming through it so well, and a big 'well done' for having prepared Ella's Pink Lady so well. This is when you prove what a great sailor you are!
G'day Champ, Being the absolute champion that you are, I knew that you (and Ella) would be able to handle the conditions. You've shown the knockers that you can handle even severe conditions and multiple knockdowns. You are truly amazing. You sure you're not a 35 year old hiding in a 16yo body?
Well,as they say..if you get through that you can get through anything.Amazing and well done.Make sure you have a rest and give yourself a treat..some spoiling.Be easy on yourself! Lots of lovexxx
You beaut Jess - what a trooper. Hang in there. With the whole world watching you, you can feel proud for yourself and EPL. Thanks for the blogs - I check them every day. Vinnie - NZ
If it was easy everyone would sail arround the world by themselves. You are a special person that has prepared for all of this. Good luck with the rest of your voyage hope you dont get any more storms like that. God speed and safe sailing.
I was wondering what a knockdown was until the explanation and tried to imagine how hairy it was through that storm. Imagining it and experiencing it are two entirely different things, and what an experience for you. Wow! It gets a little turbulent out there, doesn't it Jesse?! Thanks for the pics. They sure do show the power of the ocean. Take care little sweetheart.
Hope you and the crew were safely strapped in....Looked like a wild ride Jess.....Hope you are safe...can't believe you thought to take pics during that ride...lol
that is noooo way to celebrate your11,000nm milestone..geez! 70knot winds, 20-30ft swells and big ole rogue waves to boot...yikes! sounds like the "perfect storm".. George Clooney no less.
8hrs of hell on the high seas ...wow! You are one helluva courageous young lady Jesse. Even tho you were secured into your wet-seat, of which I'm sooo pleased to hear, it would've been a seriously frightening experience, especially during the 'knockdowns'. Wow!..the mind boggles.
Sooo happy to know you and Ella's Pink Lady came out of it relatively unscathed, but the rest of the crew might need a bit of counselling after that traumatic experience :)
No doubt you will, or will have already surveyed EPL for damage. She is one tough cookie just like her captain. Hope everything's structurally sound.
Those pictures were ominous and awesome to see Jesse, but please don't put yourself at risk to satisfy our hunger for dramatics. We want ya back on terra firma complete with 'dorky hat' :)
Take care out there Captain Watson and get plenty of rest. Safe and secured please!
Btw, where is the...wet-seat?.
Ben (Qld)
Stephen M; you are a true humanitarian. Donation #2 on it's way.
Grant, "Sailing home"; best one yet, please keep em comin-cheers!
Hi Jessica. I am so glad to read that you are well going after the storm. Four knock-downs, gusts of 70 knots – and you are still going strong. That is fantastic and glorious! Well done seamanship. Thank you for the violent photos. Stay safe. All the best. Jørgen, Copenhagen, Denmark
I was hoping you wouldnt have to weather any rogue waves, perfect storms etc, but i guess thats just wishful thinking and it was only a matter of time till you found yourself in such conditions. I think it would be marvelous to experience such conditions but i also think it would have been incredible scary there for a while. But you came thru it unscathed as i knew you and pink ella would.
I cant wait to read your next blog and hear your feeling thru it all.
Glad to hear the dolphins are back....im sure they are your good luck charms
Anyway...ill keep an eye open for your next blog....smile
stay safe, have fun
Deb and the guineas
Ps: i have some excellent photos of Baby Guineas, Jessica, Hannah and Ella...i must pop some on my blog so your sister Hannah can see how adorable they are now....smile
Believe me there was no put-down intended, in any way. I am sorry that what I wrote came off that way.
I had to go back and read what I wrote, and re-read what you wrote, then re-read what I wrote again to try to understand "If you are going to blog a putdown to somebody, do it honestly....."
So, I'd like to rewrite what I said, attempting to be clearer, hoping I don't dig myself in any deeper. Calling all Gods and Goddesses... This of course assumes that I have an understanding of what was perceived as a putdown... is it the "but"?
Here's another try...
PWB: That was hilarious! AND, after reading the part about twisting your aging torso to reach the enemy, your hair!... (your description was great conveying the funniest visual image)....I was smiling and laughing at the image, and the thought humorously came that many men with aging torsos would not not consider hair on their heads an enemy!
You see, I am older than your hypothetical wife (she's 55), and am with you on aging torso's (for us women, it gives new meaning to "down and out"). Just blame my verbal indiscretions on a senior moment!
So, can we make up? And if you want to hypothetically take me out take me out for a virtual birthday dinner (since in Reality my birthday is in a few days... making your "hypothetical for the day" pretty funny!)... I promise not to wear a short dress (real, virtual, or otherwise, which is a relief, easy promise since I don't have one) or wear high heals (another sigh of relief, not having any of those either) or perfume (another sigh of relief...this is going to be pretty easy), but I can't pass on the bubble bath.
And, would you mind, my hypothetical dear, if we requested a pink Prius to take us on my hypothetical birthday outing?
Waiting on edge to see if I have succeeded in dispelling the adage "the third time's the charm".
Real Smiles, Real Life, and Rural Regards, Susan in Oregon
Wow, you are amazing and glad that was a, relatively, short storm. But man, the power of those waves. All i can say is 'good on you'. You are amazing and sending you mucho, mucho calm seas so you can get lots of zzzzzzzzzzzz's. And I bet those dolphins were with you the whole time.......right beneath the sea. Get a sweet rest and here's to gentle seas and a warm breeze.
Happy sailing from California, man you are amazing!
Jesse hi darl - WOW!! 70 knot winds and up to 10 m swell; now that's got to be a huge challenge with lots of butterflies, no doubt, renting your tummy for a few hours. The main thing is your OK and that is all that counts. You handled it well by all accounts and that's to your eternal credit - however, we have come to expect that from our Jesse. Nevertheless, it would have been scary like any form of uncertainty we experience for the first time. I'm pleased to know you were exercising safety first and please continue to do so. Being clipped on tightly is the only way to go darl. When I read the News Update believe me it's the first time ever my worry beards broke into a sweat. Nature is fickle and it's always the element of uncertainty that you must make allowance for.
Now that the conditions have improved I guess there is maintenance to do and I suspect you need a good rest. I also hope you are looking after yourself food-wise.
'til next time continue to exercise safety firs; and let me remind you what I had to say after rounding the Cape - that another Silly or a Dolphin would watch over you and I was right. The Dolphins must be impressed with you - and why wouldn't they!! Take care precious girl; always thinking of you out there.
Jessica, In 24 hours you crossed 49 South x 49 West, crossed the 11,000nm mark and weather all the ocean could throw at you with knockdowns and waves the size of 5 story buildings.
You go you good thing !
It's scary at the time but once passed I bet you're glad to have experienced the storm and everything came out the other side in reasonable shape (how's the motley crew members).
I can just imagine the state your Mother must have been in while you were going through that storm and waiting for the call to say all was well.
This may now take all doubt from the minds of those who said you shouldn't go, including our Premier. we don't hear from them anymore for some reason.
You've more than proven you are a "REAL" Sailor and ELP is a "REAL" Yacht and you can take from the ocean as good as it gives.
I suppose you'll be busy for a couple of days now checking all ropes for wear marks, fixtures, fittings and you also now have a reason to clean up the galley. at least clear a path through to the bunk.
I spent some time on a big fishing trawler and have seen the seas you went through. we didn't have wet chairs but just hung on to what ever and we also had nets on the bottom when our storm hit. it makes it interesting when the massive weight of a trailing net is holding the boat back as a rouge waves hit. some waves you sort of go through and that checks the boat for leaks quite well.
You'd have to agree that the most interesting parts are the rogue waves and when you are sitting in the trough of a wave looking up at a massive wall of water that towers above mast and think how am I going to scale that. then there's the sitting on top of a big wave looking down and bracing for the ride.
When looking up at the wall of water you realise just how small you are doesn't it ?. when you consider the waves are roughly twice as high as you boat is long will give the bloggers an idea of what you faced.
I and everyone else are getting so impressed with your skills and make us very, very proud (Queensland more so). you continually amaze us with new events and handle everything in your stride.
I'm most impressed with you still having the attitude that the ocean and mother nature have to be treated with respect.
How'd the fishing go ? and did you try the floating line for surface fish ?. there's always surface fish chasing bait fish schools in the Atlantic ocean.
Cheers Jesse, great work and I bet dear diary has a big entry today.
Good speed, good seas and take care Barry Bribie Island
Heya Jess and Crew ,Jess if you can read this with all the bobbing up and down like a teabag,I know 'knockdown'is between more than 1/4 but less than 1/2 of a complete 'rollover',which is the one I'm hoping you don't have to endure!!I'm curious though, and correct me if I'm wrong, but, once you've been hit,I expect the bum of EPL is riding up the wave and the pointy bit is paddling around in air kind of laying on her side, but with the trough of the(previous) wave still down there and the potential to dig in and go right over,-..hey?? Wild Stuff!!! Oh well you'll just have to stay indoors on days like that and catch up on all the blogs...Happy Reading PS I bet all yer surfin' mates are putting in orders for take-awaves!!??
Jesse, this was scary from this angle. I can't begin to imagine what it was like for you. You are one mighty sailor to have gone through this so well with little damage to you and EPL. I'm glad the dolphins are back keeping you company. Congratulations on reaching the 11,000 nm mark. That is such a long way from Australia. Keep up the good work. You are doing well.
G'day Jess Well Miss Kid glad you weathered the storm and the boat is fine? Are you good? Bet it was bloody tough for a while, you amaze me more everyday your some talent. Regards Brian
Jesse my heart was in my mouth reading about the "knockdowns"........ oh my how scary !!!!! I'm so pleased you are OK and hope you are catching up on some sleep. xx
Hello Jessica, I am very glad to hear that you came through that storm with only minor damage, it shows how well you have prepared and maintained EPL. 4 knockdowns in the 1 storm must have been more than you expected, but it must be comforting to know that EPL, will pop back up and keep you safe. I am sure that other people such as Don McIntyre and Jessie Martin would have told you that a knockdown is pretty much inevitable in the amazing journey you are undertaking, and my guess is that your confidence in EPL has gone up 100%. Take care down there, be safe, our thoughts and best wishes for your safety and success are being sent to you from all corners of the world! Dave, Ulladulla.
Hi Jess Good news that you and EPL made it safely through that awful storm. You have now more than proved yourself, no longer can anyone doubt your courage and ability. I hope the damage can be quickly repaired. You were superb Jess.
Hi Jesse, So pleased the storm has passed and you and EPL are safe. The picures are awesome but a guess things got worse after you took those. I cannot imagine how scary it must of been especially the knockdowns. Hope you are now well rested after your ordeal an have some perfect conditions ahead. Keep safe, Joy Ballarat.
Your gettin into it Jessica. Yeah let it rip!!!!! We are praying for you here, and Jesus is watching over you. He is in command of the waves and the wind. Keep cruising and happy sailing.
What an experience for you!!! It sounds so dangerous to me to read about the knockdowns. As I mentioned before, I have never been sailing, and you are a fantastic teenager, with a lot of guts. I have had a look in my atlas again, after 49/49,so I know where you are. Look after yourself, rest and sleep when you can. Sail on safe and keep dry. Hope the dophins sail with you.
Wow! That was one big storm! 7-10metre waves?! I can't even imagine what that looks like and how intimidating (and scary!) that must be. The press release said you and EPL came through ok though which is great to hear.
Stay strapped in! And I hope the weather is kinder to you over the next few days.
This one is for all the naysayers and critics out there: Jessica has just survived hurricane force winds in the southern Atlantic Ocean in a storm that raged for eight hours and resulted in four knockdowns, yet she has come out of it like a total champion. So, do the naysayers have anything intelligent they'd like to offer on this subject? Or are they just going to sit there - like usual - with the cigarette in one hand and the can of beer in the other in their cosy armchairs and rant about this incredibly brave young lady's inability to negotiate her solo circumnavigation of the world?
As for Jessica, congratulations for the umpteenth time! You are an inspiration and a beacon of courage!!!

What a storm you passed through. Glad you got through it without any major issues. I can only imagine the experience and the nervous anticipation of going into this storm.
It is nice for you to have the dolphins back again.
Enjoy the calm while you can in case more storms come your way.
Stay safe and keep dry.
Rob Ingleburn NSW (flying home tomorrow from Perth after NSW won the U19 Mens National Softball Champonships :-))
Jess you are SO brave to be out there alone. I am so in awe of you, your courage and your ability.
Still think you should be Young Australian Of The Year, who else is out there defying 10 metre waves and coming up safe n smiling (I can only guess you would have a smile of relief on you right now that you are ok after that storm!!?)
Thinking of you, hope you can find some chocolate to chomp on to help settle the nerves after that 'ride', keep safe, think of you heaps, love your blogs,
Hey Jessica, thumbs up for another big achievment during the storm. It must be horrible some times in these coditions beeing alone. I suppose not so much people can emagine your thoughts in these moments. Keep your head up all the time, we all are with you. Anyway , enjoy every second on board ELLAs PINK LADY , all the best, fair winds and always ware your safetybelt. Many regards from Germany, yours Marcus
What a storm to go though. Will have you in our thoughts and prayers. Take care and be safe. Hope you get some well earned rest. You are a wonderful young lady. Keith & Anne, Hervey Bay
Been watching your voyage since you began, What a great trip. Love your blogs and videos. No knockdown will stop you.Carry on and Smile as you go. Best wishes from Shepparton Vic, GO FOR IT Jess
Jessica, nobody can take away the thrill this voyage gives you, its yours to keep and much thanks for sharing. You are a heroine within your own right and its all yours for ever. I truly hope to see a book of your voyage, with pictures and maps as I will put my name down for one and place it pride of place in my meagre library. Great congrats to Mum and Dad and their support they give you. YGG.
Hi Jessica Congratulations for passing your 11,000nm mark, and for enduring the clobbering you had to face in your overnight battle with the Atlantic. The “Latest Report” indicates that you and Ella’s Pink Lady handled it well – much as we have come to expect from you.
I hope you and Ella did not sustain very much damage and that you have now been able to clean up “the mess”, as it is described in the report.
Your photos certainly illustrate the fury of the sea, and I don’t think the spray marks on the lens detract from them. They will be photos you will be able to look back on and proudly say “I sailed through that!”
I look forward to your more detailed update when you have time to write after you have restored Ella’s Pink Lady and yourself to normality – and prepared for any future Atlantic storms.
Enjoy the lighter conditions while you can. Tony L (Mt Martha VIC)
hi Jess I do ot supposthat it is possibel to sail through thse oceans without gettting knocked downa few times. we ontinu to pray for your safety and your speedy return home. as one of the other bloggers sang "I get knocked dow, but I get up again for they're never going to keep mem down" keep getting up Jess. I am sue that these times of danger and stress will just make you more determined to achieve your goal. I am also assured that when you return, you will have a huge number of businesses beeting a path to your door wanting to employ you once you finish your school. as an employer, I would hire you tomorrow :) Stay savfe and bukled in. You must be very gratefl for your fablous shore crey that have prepared you so well for this amazing adventure. "may His angels continue to keepwatch over you" even if they are in the form of a dolphin or two :) Ron Garvey
Hi Jesse, amazing the forces of the elements and nature. Big congratulation to your going through ist safely. With the dolfins back they tell you that they keep an eye on you and protect you. All the Best Peter from Austria
Hi Jesse you young salty dog!!! We commentors sit in our warm homes and if we have never experienced what you have been through can only imagine what it must be like. The great pictures don't do justice to the real situation. Toss in the sound of the wind, the motion of the boat in a confused sea and then the pounding of the heart in the chest and then you start to get a little idea of what you have come through. Jessica, your are like iron that is repeatedly thrust into the kilm, heated up to a glowing red hot, taken out, pounded on an anvil and becomes stronger each time. Each storm makes you a more confident sailor. After each storm when you are able to again come on deck you do with a smile on your face to greet your dolphin friends and wait to feel the warm sun on your face again. Sail safe Jesse and always eastward toward that beautiful harbor in Sydney. Your relieved long distant friend Larry (guamgranite@myfairpoint.net)
You are so brave to have come through such an experience. Wild seas and storms were to be expected but four knockdowns in one storm is amazing. Well done! Dee
Guess the sea is giving revenge for you sneaking around the Horn without it noticing. Glad you fared well through the knock-downs. Must have been a bit of a fright. Real happy you endured it without injury. Will be praying for your safety. Best wishes, duane
Scary stuff! I read on your web site that you endured the storm and came out ok, even with several knockdowns.. I am so happy things went well. You know we are a large bunch cheering for you! :-D
Be safe Jesse! Best of luck for the rest of your journey!!!
Hey Jesse - if I could hear you singing a song tonight it might go something like this .....
I got something to tell you I got something to say I'm gonna put this dream in motion Never let nothing stand in my way ... When the going gets tough The tough get going
A champion always gets up after the first knockdown (and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th ....).
Hi Jessica, I can imagine those eight hours were really tough and long. I am happy you succeeded and hopefully you are in good condition. I whish you more of those lazy sunny days sleeping on the cabin top. Btw, we might "meet" when you pass Cape of Good Hope, depending on your speed. Within two weeks I will head for SA and will stay there for three weeks. I will follow your blog and will wave as you pass by. Safe journey.
My Goodness Jess.... This is the first time I am writing a comment but I have read every blog and checked your website every day. I am a mum of two teenagers/adults so I must say I have worried about you... Silly it is just a mum thing!!. Well I have to say I am so proud of you and proud to be Australian. Well done Jess and be strong we are all behind you..Sending some warm Sydney hugs..
Jesse, WOW! I have to say reading that update scared me, I am so glad you and your Pink Lady came through it relatively unscathed, and glad you are in calmer conditions and that your dolphins are back with you, so comforting.
Thank you to Ground Control for the updates, it must have been a nail biting time for you all.
Have a good rest sugar and prepare for the next bit - you popping around in the ocean like a cork is very concerning under such conditions, but I do realise you are doing something you love and probably relish such a challenge, keep up the good work.......x
Hi Jess .Well done on that storm. My goodness!! I have followed your blogs every day since you left Sydney but htis is the first time I am writing a comment. I just have to say as a mum I am so proud of you..I am sure your parents are to. Stay safe. Jan
Hi Captain Jesse, Glad to hear that you and EPL survived the harsh conditions. It must have been scarry. Three knockdowns..... you are amazing. Hope you have smooth sailing for a long time. Be Safe! Be Happy! Stay tuff! Godspeed!
Hi Jess, back in business I see! Now you are frolicking with them big waves and ghastly winds. Hope everything was fixed in the cabine otherwise it is going to be a big mess overthere. Poolymooly... Good to hear you knocked them down 4 times. Sounds like a routine procedure to you. I guess the boat has been designed for such frolicking. Poolymooly... My girl, that are the pictures we would like to see more often! Did you manage to take some video? You should have a webcam installed so we can see what is going on over there! But most importantly: Keep up them dodgers! Jony the Pony
4 knockdowns due to a series of rogue waves... That is a warning for everyone who wants to repeat this and thinks anyone can do it. I am glad Jessica is safe and sound and I hope she can continue her dangerous and most challenging journey and the yacht doesn't have to be repaired. But after 4 knockdowns I am afraid it will have to be repaired.
Anyway Jessica good luck on your way and stay strong! We are proud of you.
Hi Jessica WOW! your first knock down, I bet you had your heart in your mouth for a while, with the first one, did it come without any warning, it sure scares the crap out of you. I have only been involved in 1 and 1/2, I was on the helm and all of a sudden I'm free falling and crashed into one of the crew setting opposite, a few bruises, but ok. It felt like ages before she righted herself, but it was not that long at all. Did you have any sail up at all, maybe a storm jib? With your first real big storm I reckon you are real proud of yourself, you should be, we are. I had a crew of 6 to help with the clean up, you are all by yourself. Will you be heading a little further north to get out of this storm corridor? WE all will be waiting with baited breath for your next blog, and some more great photos. So keep having fun and most of all KEEP SAFE. Cheers George Simmons Lots of love Exmouth WA Australia
Hi Jess, well what a legend you are, glad to hear you are safe after the big storm, which must have been frightening, you have so much courage. Thanks for the blog and photo's,all the very best, stay safe and happy sailing.. Nanna Cairns Qld
You must be buggered Jess! Full on adrenalin, muscles, fear and nerves pumping for 12 hours or so.
Would love to say get a good nights sleep sweet heart but you can't!
Don't drop your guard! Wake up and don't let your self sleep through any alarm! Maybe test one on a timer at half the expected time it's meant to go off!
You're living with the dolphins and in their environment. Research how they sleep, think about it all the time and you might wake up easier!
You can catch up slowly on sleep with out going too deep if you wind down slowly! Don't read or stress to much and just move slowly and carefully!
Hi Jessica, I sense/hear a standing ovation and a thunderous round of applause for you and EPL from your Shore Team, bloggers, us wannabe sailors and real sailors !! What a ride that must have been sitting in the wet seat.
Yesterday, I checked PW and saw the storm building and hoped you weren't near the centre where the colour purple showed for the first time in awhile...fancy experienceing 70knot=130kmh winds and 7-10m seas...WOW.
You must be fearless....
Oh, just a little info on dolphins that I heard on CBC radio here, Quote: "Humans, great apes, dolphins and elephants, well-known for their superior intelligence and complex social systems, are thought to possess the highest forms of empathy and altruism in the animal kingdom," Diana Reiss, of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, and co-author of the study, said in a media release.
I feel sure the dolphins recognize the superior intelligence of the young lady sailing along in EPL. Be safe and enjoy a little rest.
Jesse I hope you are ok and didnt get any injuries from the knockdowns - I imagine that is probably one of the longest nights you have had, each minute would feel like an hour.
Keep positive, chewing away the miles, sunshine and calmer waters will greet you soon, the dolphins are at your side for encouragement, and the whole damn world is with captain Jessica and EPL - arms united from one side of the globe to the other to give you strength as you need it.
So proud of you, just need to know you havent sustained any injuries, and EPL is in good shape. Look after each other.
Sounds like you and EPL coped really well, it's true, your tedious hard work is paying off. As Australia day 2010 dawns, I think I can safely say who my hero is for the year. You truly are an inspiration, especially to fellow 16 year Queenslanders. Loving your journey and praying for your safety and a safe journey home. Tight lines, C
Once again all I can say is WOW. 3 knockdowns and you calmly state, "We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK." You must be the bravest person in the world, or at least in the south Atlantic. Arnie in Canada
Hi Jessica, Do you think the person who chose the colours to indicate wind speed and wave heights on www.passageweather.com has a sense of humour?
Pink is the maximum wind and wave height colour :-)
I have no concept of how you can sail in 70 knots. My VJ dinghy regularly had at least 10 knockdowns in a race with a 10-15 knot breeze. You are awesome.
I have just read the news about your storm experiences. You must have been really concerned at times during those eight hours. Thank goodness for the strength of your boat and equipment, and too for your own fortitude. Yours continues to be an amazing story. Keep well and continue safely onwards to home. Continue!
Wow Jesse, so pleased to read on the latest news that you came through the storm okay despite 4 knockdowns, that must have been so scary. What a brave girl you are, quite incredible!!! As always, stay safe, keep smiling, God bless,
I didnt know how to create a blog, but my daughter is showing me how....I would read all your post and when i add you, my daughter was like who is that, i explain to her and she was like oh yea we saw her on the Today show... Praying for you kiddo, what a storm..wooooo
I'm sorry that you got hammered. Four rogue waves--that's four too many.
The Atlantic Ocean, apparently, isn't going to let you pass easily. Let's hope you've been through the worst.
After you've cleaned up EPL and had a long rest yourself, please let us know the details.
List of damages? Are your electronics still workng? How long did the storm last? Was it dark or light? What's a wet-seat and where is it located? How wet did you get? Did the cabin stay dry? Are you ok? How scared were you? etc. etc.
Well, you can't turn back now, Jesse. But it sounds like you've really been baptized--FOUR TIMES!
Take care of yourself and know that our hearts are in that wet-seat with you.
You really are an amazing woman (I keep saying that!!), I could not imagine going through an ordeal like that, I've heard about others going through it too but to actually be there would to me be terrifying, to say the least. You are an amazing woman!!
I'm just hanging to read your account of it in your next blog. My idea of excitement is doing some four wheel driving up in the forestry behing Kenilworth next Tuesday (Australia Day) with some family and friends, seems pretty lame in comparison with what you are doing!
Jess, keep amazing us, but keep safe. I continue to pray for your safety and wisdom as you face whatever the seas throw at you. May God watch over you out there and protect you.
Jess, You are amazing! I havent been online for a couple of weeks but, gee, u have had such an adventure!! More dolphins, rounding the Cape, your parents flyova and the massive storm!! I'll have to make sure i stay updated!! Good to see u and EPL made it thru the storm ok!! Once again, U R AMAZING!! Good Luck & God Bless. Kate, Aimee & Caleb!!
I am so glad to read that you and EPL are ok. Four knockdowns alone in the middle of the ocean. OMG how scary is that! I hope you have some less damanding days to recover now.
Hope you are catching up on some rest. Was hoping to hear from you but I do understand you have a fair bit on at the moment.
"knockdown’ is when the mast goes below horizontal and into the sea"...my eyes were bleeding when I read this. Below horizontal… four times….
I believe, as armchair supporter of your journey, I had lulled myself into a complete sense of security, after old man Cape was ticked off. The weather certainly dictates to the ocean in terms of “how and when”, doesn’t it.
So glad it has settled some, you are so very brave and while EPL may not have liked that very much, she will always rise to the occasion, as you with her.
All my very best to you, support crew, family. Preparation immaculate. The news described a harrowing time and some damage, can’t wait to hear from you. Have been and will be thinking about you heaps. Take care, Paula
You and EPL are such a great team. I was reading Abby Sunderland's latest blog as she leaves in a little over 6 hours and a fellow blogger said that you had been hit by a storm, but that you were okay!!!! "Whew", I thought.
I was on your website as quick as a flash and am so relieved to hear that you are okay. I must thank the good Lorn for being so faithful and answering my prayers in my asking to keep you safe.
It sounded scary how it described you having a "knockdown". You won't want too many of those.
I hope that you are able to fix the minor damage to EPL. Get your hardworking crew on deck. I'm sure they'll lend you a helping hand! :-)
Will look forward to hearing all about your adrenalin rushing time you had through the storm.
Take care my dear. Once again well done getting through this challenging time. Keep safe and big hugs to you. Jan (Auckland, New Zealand)
To Susan of Melbourne....what a beautiful statement of the facts, it is hard to embellish on what you have said any further....
But I will say a few words....
After having a very quick read of most posts, up to Susan's post, I just feel that the gravity of these "knockdowns" as it is termed are a very serious event, all manner of things could have gone WRONG, to have had Four of these Knockdowns is one more than what Jesse Martin ever had, correct me if I'm wrong!....
I've been north of Melbourne most of the day but my thoughts were often on you young Jess, and rightly so it seems, just an hour ago we that is my Sister my Niece and me mum were huddled around the Laptop reading the latest News and we were all very concerned, I had goose bumps on top of goose bumps just thinking about your first knockdown and then we continued on to read about another three!!....Jess Jess Jess....we know you wanted to experience this, we know you didn't want to roll up into Sydney Harbor without some "Battle Scars"....but please no more Knockdowns Jesse....we understand that the S&S 34 has this built in self righting characteristic and thank god it does but this is still a very serious event, I'm sorry I'm just shocked that it has actually happened, I just thought with all the "smooth" sailing you've had so far that we just were hoping the rest of your voyage would without incidence...it just goes to show...
So I shall end by repeating the last part of Susan's message and that is:-
"but most of all to you, the plucky gutsy, super intelligent, competent sailor and beautiful generous girl that the world is privileged to get to know and love!"
Jesse...please no more knockdowns....one is enough!
All my love....Jessica....I can't wait to read about this new experience in your own words!!
Wow Jesse, that's scary and exciting at the same time. I had no idea what a knockdown was before today but to go through one sounds really scary, and going through 4 sounds terrifying. I am so glad you made it through the storm alright and will keep you in my prayers.
I knew you were headed for some pretty foul weather but wow to be hit by 4 rogue waves, Facing those walls of water coming at you is just unimaginable. Most sailors would never face one I should imagine.
Could some one who has sailing experience please explain to this land lubber what a wet seat is and why Jesse remained tethered to it. Thankyou.
After so long at sea Jesse when you do come ashore you will suffer from 'landsickness' lol I guess the first few days on land wont be real fun getting use to a steady surface.
I prayed real hard for you when I knew you were heading for some bad weather and I think I will keep it up.
I am so very glad you are safe pet. You have 45 minute cat naps and me I can not keep awake Doc thinks I have Ross river fever in any case spend most of my days on and off a sleep.
Take care Jesse and keep tethered well and eat well. Love and hugs Evie from Bendigo xx00xx
After reading the latest news update about the storm, four knockdowns, 70 knot (80 MPH) winds all I can do is say WOW.
I found myself thinking back to September and October of 2009 when I was reading all of the negative naysaying flatulence on other blogs and forums. I bookmarked a few of the more virulent forums and I now find them strangely silent. Hummmm, oh well, I guess their computers are in the shop being repaired. But no worries mate, soon they will be here soon to speak and write of your lack of experience.
it looks scary honey pie but u can manage it,,,u just trying to scare us,,,go for gold but u r far from out o the woods yet sweet peaches...lol Bernie777
Hi Jesse.....Fluffy Crew hanging in there!!!! Glad you came through the storm ok. The photos sent shivers through me!!! HANG IN THERE Sally from Melbourne by the VERY CALM BAY
01-23-10 @ 09:35 Hi Jessica, I’m sitting at my computer, just read the report, and I don’t know what to say. Wow, four (4) knockdowns, I couldn’t help it, I lost it, just thinking of you being tossed around in the cabin was just to much for me. I know you were belted in, but there’s still violent motions that you’re experiencing. Oh My God, I have to pull myself together. Can’t think, just writing in spurts, whew, very much out of control. I know it’s over right now, and you’re cruising at a nice ten (10) knot breeze with a three (3) metre swell, but as I read the report from the support team I could visualize what was going on in the cabin, and I got scared for you. They explained what a ‘knockdown’ was, and that scared the hell out of me. To imagine the mast below horizontal level, and where that puts you, and what that does to you, in the cabin, and how you felt emotionally, that’s just hard to handle. I know, I know, you’re safe and that’s all that matters, but damn that was rough. God knows Jessica, I am so proud of you. But please, no more of them.
“We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK. It’s time like this when you realise why good preparation of the boat is so important. She handled it well,” And let’s not forget the preparation of the Skipper, I’m sure all the training you went through kicked in and had you thinking properly. I’m just so glad that you were belted in. Wouldn’t expect anything less.
Knowing you, after it was all over you probably had a little giggle, didn’t you? Well, good for you, you wanted some adventure, I just hope that’s enough for you, I don’t think I can take any more. lol……. I’m glad that EPL handled it well, as did you, she’s one tough boat, I remember reading once how she had weight in her keel that would allow her to upright herself if she did go over. I imagine this was a factor in this particular incident.
I will be back, but right now (by the way Good Morning) I’m going to get my brekkie (like that) and read all the posts. At least I don’t have any sleep in my eyes. Ha, ha. It all got washed away. Yeah. Again, I am so proud of you, hugs, hugs and more hugs, and a few more after that. lol….. Now I’m getting giddy.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower. May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers. Michael (75) from Kingwood, WV
P.S. The pictures were great, but I was already scared spitless?!?!?!? lol
You and EPL are AMAZING!! You have been tested by Neptune and Poseidon and have gained their trust....dolphins grace you with their friendship and blessings....albatross - the Souls of lost sailors guide your journey.....I am so extraordinarily proud, of you.....you are more than an amazing woman and sailor, you are an ispiration to the new world conciousness....anything can be done...if you believe in yourself, are prepared, and have the wisdom of the ages guiding you.....
Be blessed my dear....and congratulations on your journey....what a soul-gratifying feeling you must have today, after surviving the storm last night...
Thank you for the good news, and by the way for the pics! Even the pre-storm sea was scary already! With such winds, we don't dare driving on a road, not to say about sailing! 4 knock-downs is worse than what I was fearing... and up you are! A true CHAMPION, Captain Jesse! Champtain Jesse, maybe? I ordered two bottles of Ruinart pink champagne for you and Ella, to be delivered in Crows Nest. Though, I am fearing that EPL might not drink alcohol at all? If it were the case, you could either wash her with it (not very efficient maybe, but certainly good smells and it should help her when you want to slalom across buoys, or offer a drink to your crew, the fluffy one first of course.
Whew, I feel relieved somehow. I felt it was too demanding that you could do it, all around, without meeting some dreadful violent storm at least once or twice. Now it's over. There might be a second one in the Indian Southern Ocean, but the odds are less now.
Anyway -it's easy to say it after the battle-, it is probably a good thing you had to experience that kind of roller-coaster. First, it will shut the trap of the possible last naysayers. Second, it will eradicate the next breed of viper tongues, saying that you were just lucky not to have met a big storm. Third, it will give your achievement even a higher value. Fourth, you gained a new experience from it. Fifth, it proves that you are not only a good sailor, but a great one. Your legend is sailing on with you.
I would like to greet S&S for their undomitable Nr34, Don McIntyre for his wise choice, and one more all thepeople involved in EPL's preparation. As often, the victory has been forget in training. But it has been achieved on the Atlantic field, and our bravest of all skippers is included in the praise!
BLOODY GOOD JOB, Miss Watson! As our Workerbev types so well: {{{HUGS}}}

Buenos vientos para ti
I have enjoyed immensely your voyage to date. Glad you made it through the storm in good shape. Hope the rest of your trip is uneventful and there are no more "knockdowns." Must have been scary belted to your seat in that weather. God speed from a Texas sea-sailor wannabe.
Wooooo Hooooooo
Way to go Jess!

Dearest Jess,
Thinking of you tonight. I pray for your safe weathering with Pink Lady, in the gale.
Courage, smarts, stamina. We are all with you in spirit, like never before.
Mary, Maine, USA
JESS, the great Atlantic has welcomed you in a timely manner, you and Ella have passed the first test. we look forward to your next blog...and hearing first hand about your experience....My ? is, how bloody loud was it.

Hiya Jesse,
Just had a look at the pre-storm pics.
All the best from Sydney.
Glad to see you made it through okay!! I've been watching and reading ever since you left Sydney. Hope the water and weather perk up for you in the coming days! :o)

Well done in riding out some of the nasty conditions the south altlantic can throw at you!

Hi Jess,
OMG!!

I have been holding my breath for you for the past few days...finally I can let it out whew.. glad to hear all is well. Sleep tight.
Good sailing Jesse!
We're all with you!
Cheers, Kev, Sydney, Oz.
G'day Jesse,
Thanks for posting such wonderful photos!
Keep safe.
All the Best
John
Dear Jess,
I found out what a knockdown was and I am astounded by your bravery. You beat all!

Commander Watson,
I can't believe it (0) comments.
Hi Jess,
Glad you and EPL survived the storm intact. The storm looked a bit nasty on weather passage.
Well rest up Jess.

Jessica,
Have fun, STAY SAFE and happy sailing.

Godspeed and smooth sailing.

Hi Jessica,
We've just been sitting back in the comfort of our lounge room watching Roger Federer win his second round match in the Australia Open not knowing you had just been through that horrific storm. Very glad to read it has departed and you are Ok and EPL is still strong and rearing to go! It's great to see on The Voyage map that you are definitely "on your way home". Take care, safe sailing and Happy Australia Day for Tuesday. Gary.

I hope the storm has passed and the winds have died down now so you can enjoy some calmer weather and see to any important jobs you need to do. Has the weather gotten warmer now? Hi Jesse,
4 knockdowns| I was knocked down once while making sandwiches for the rest of the crew.
Hope you are in a little more friendly waters for a while
Godspeed Peter, Gold Coast.

Jess,
From Kirby
P.S. Do you have any pets?
Oh, my God! is about all I can say while summing up what a tough critter you really are. Those sorts of storms are what you prepared for but yet they hit us observers hard and stringently.
Your having come through it all makes you one of the most respected people on the planet. You could have lain weeping in your bed, but you took it on the chin, and just pushed on forward.
Jess, my heart goes out to you.

Jesse,

Now that is extreme sailing 3downs and still OK amazing. Great to hear you are both doing well EPL is also quite a lady like her skipper, could you tell us what sail area you had up during the storm or were you on just bare poles.

Dear Jesse!!!
Love ya,
Carol Florida U.S.A.

SO thankful you survived such a horrific storm, and hope EPL didn't take on too much damage. Hopefully, you'll be able to catch up on some well deserved rest! Thanks to Jessica's support team for the updates.
Oh my, what a shock; I wasn't expected this.
Thanks for letting us know that she was belted down in a wet-seat. I'd hate to have to worry that she might be banging off the walls.
Knowledge, skill, and courage is what it takes and surely Jess and her team have it all.
Hey captain Jessica
Well what a night !!!!!
Lets hope the seas abate and the winds drop off.
Well Done Jess !!!

Man I hope she's O.K. I'd be freaked out alone in a sea like that. Let alone being 16 and doing it.
May God watch over you Jesse
I'm very relieved to hear that you are ok. Well done!! Amazing stuff. Jacquie and family (Bay of Islands, New Zealand)
Hi Jessica,
A Big "WELL DONE" on riding out the storm.
Thinking of you and stay safe...

So glad you and pink lady are safe.
Blessings always,

Hi jess,
just read on "latest news" about the storm you encountered, 4 knockdowns but you Captain Jessica EPL came through basically unscathed, saw the pics, those waves would scare the living daylights out of me, good on you Jess you handled it so well, once again demonstrating your amazing sailing skills seems nothing fazes you out there on the ocean, and now the winds have abated and your dolphin guides have returned, actually they never left you, they were there all along looking after our precious Jessica.

Hey Jesse,
I'm glad your OK and back into some better weather.
Take care.

G'day Champ,

I was wondering what a knockdown was until the explanation and tried to imagine how hairy it was through that storm. Imagining it and experiencing it are two entirely different things, and what an experience for you.
Wow! It gets a little turbulent out there, doesn't it Jesse?! Thanks for the pics. They sure do show the power of the ocean.
Take care little sweetheart.
Hope you and the crew were safely strapped in....Looked like a wild ride Jess.....Hope you are safe...can't believe you thought to take pics during that ride...lol
Jesse!
that is noooo way to celebrate your11,000nm milestone..geez! 70knot winds, 20-30ft swells and big ole rogue waves to boot...yikes! sounds like the "perfect storm"..
George Clooney no less.
8hrs of hell on the high seas
...wow!

Wow jesse

Ps: i have some excellent photos of Baby Guineas, Jessica, Hannah and Ella...i must pop some on my blog so your sister Hannah can see how adorable they are now....smile
To PWB--
Believe me there was no put-down intended, in any way.
Waiting on edge to see if I have succeeded in dispelling the adage
"the third time's the charm".
Real Smiles, Real Life, and Rural Regards,
Susan in Oregon
Hi Jess
It must have been one hell of an experience for you and you've come through with flying colours! What a girl!
Just don't do it too often or we will all have heart attacks while you sail on undaunted.
I don't think I could be more proud of anybody in the world. You beat them all Jess.
Fair winds and fair skies.
Love
Mike (Sydney)
Wow, you are amazing and glad that was a, relatively, short storm. But man, the power of those waves. All i can say is 'good on you'. You are amazing and sending you mucho, mucho calm seas so you can get lots of zzzzzzzzzzzz's. And I bet those dolphins were with you the whole time.......right beneath the sea. Get a sweet rest and here's to gentle seas and a warm breeze.
Happy sailing from California, man you are amazing!

HAWKEYE
HAWKEYE
Jessica, In 24 hours you crossed
49 South x 49 West, crossed the 11,000nm mark and weather all the ocean could throw at you with knockdowns and waves the size of 5 story buildings.
Good speed, good seas and take care

Hi Jessica,
Great news that you weathered that storm ok, sounded quite frightening. I love reading about your journey and wish you smooth sailing from here on.
Oh well you'll just have to stay indoors on days like that and catch up on all the blogs...Happy Reading
PS I bet all yer surfin' mates are putting in orders for take-awaves!!??
Jesse, this was scary from this angle. I can't begin to imagine what it was like for you. You are one mighty sailor to have gone through this so well with little damage to you and EPL.
I'm glad the dolphins are back keeping you company. Congratulations on reaching the 11,000 nm mark. That is such a long way from Australia. Keep up the good work. You are doing well.
G'day Jess
Well Miss Kid glad you weathered the storm and the boat is fine? Are you good? Bet it was bloody tough for a while, you amaze me more everyday your some talent.
Regards Brian
Jesse my heart was in my mouth reading about the "knockdowns"........ oh my how scary !!!!! I'm so pleased you are OK and hope you are catching up on some sleep. xx
Hello Jessica,
I am very glad to hear that you came through that storm with only minor damage, it shows how well you have prepared and maintained EPL.
Hi Jess
Good news that you and EPL made it safely through that awful storm. You have now more than proved yourself, no longer can anyone doubt your courage and ability. I hope the damage can be quickly repaired. You were superb Jess.

Hi Jesse,
So pleased the storm has passed and you and EPL are safe. The picures are awesome but a guess things got worse after you took those.
I cannot imagine how scary it must of been especially the knockdowns.
Hope you are now well rested after your ordeal an have some perfect conditions ahead.
Keep safe,

Your gettin into it Jessica. Yeah let it rip!!!!! We are praying for you here, and Jesus is watching over you. He is in command of the waves and the wind. Keep cruising and happy sailing.

Dear brave Jessica,
What an experience for you!!!

Sydneysider
Good to hear you and EPL are safe after the storm kiddo.
Stay focused and get some rest.

Hi Jesse,
What a storm you passed through. Glad you got through it without any major issues. I can only imagine the experience and the nervous anticipation of going into this storm.
It is nice for you to have the dolphins back again.
Enjoy the calm while you can in case more storms come your way.
Stay safe and keep dry.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Hi Jesse
Great to hear that you made it through the storm unharmed and intact. I never doubted that you would!!
Sail, safe, sail fast.

Survived your first mainmast "knock down", well done Jess. I had to find out what bthat meant in the newscast. Im still impressed with your tenacity.

Been watching your voyage since you began, What a great trip. Love your blogs and videos. No knockdown will stop you.Carry on and Smile as you go. Best wishes from Shepparton Vic, GO FOR IT Jess
now you wouldn't have wanted an easy trip around the world without some rock and roll. Seems you've handled it well. Nice!!!!
Andrew from Honkers
Jessica, nobody can take away the thrill this voyage gives you, its yours to keep and much thanks for sharing. You are a heroine within your own right and its all yours for ever. I truly hope to see a book of your voyage, with pictures and maps as I will put my name down for one and place it pride of place in my meagre library. Great congrats to Mum and Dad and their support they give you. YGG.
Wow what a challenge Jess, Well done!
Hi Jessica
Congratulations for passing your 11,000nm mark, and for enduring the clobbering you had to face in your overnight battle with the Atlantic.
Enjoy the lighter conditions while you can.

hi Jess
I do ot supposthat it is possibel to sail through thse oceans without gettting knocked downa few times.
we ontinu to pray for your safety and your speedy return home.
as one of the other bloggers sang "I get knocked dow, but I get up again for they're never going to keep mem down"
keep getting up Jess. I am sue that these times of danger and stress will just make you more determined to achieve your goal.
I am also assured that when you return, you will have a huge number of businesses beeting a path to your door wanting to employ you once you finish your school. as an employer, I would hire you tomorrow :)
Stay savfe and bukled in. You must be very gratefl for your fablous shore crey that have prepared you so well for this amazing adventure.

Hi Jesse,
amazing the forces of the elements and nature. Big congratulation to your going through ist safely.
With the dolfins back they tell you that they keep an eye on you and protect you.

Well done! Hope you get some sleep now.
I'm so glad you are safe. It was scary to read about the knockdowns! You are so courageous! You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I got something to tell you
I got something to say
I'm gonna put this dream in motion
Never let nothing stand in my way ...
When the going gets tough
The tough get going
A champion always gets up after the first knockdown (and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th ....).
Be proud of yourself and sail on safely,

Hi Jessica,
I can imagine those eight hours were really tough and long.
We're proud of you, Jesse. Sail safe.

-Lori, Brisbane
Hi Jess .Well done on that storm. My goodness!! I have followed your blogs every day since you left Sydney but htis is the first time I am writing a comment. I just have to say as a mum I am so proud of you..I am sure your parents are to. Stay safe.

Hi Captain Jesse, Glad to hear that you and EPL survived the harsh
conditions. It must have been scarry. Three knockdowns..... you are amazing. Hope you have smooth
sailing for a long time. Be Safe!
Be Happy! Stay tuff! Godspeed!
Hi Jess,
back in business I see!
Hi Jessica
WOW! your first knock down, I bet you had your heart in your mouth for a while, with the first one, did it come without any warning, it sure scares the crap out of you.
Cheers George Simmons

Slow and steady wins the race!
Heaps of food a fluids Jess!
That would have been so awesome!
I hope the pink lady is ok!
So proud of you!

Hi Jessica,
I sense/hear a standing ovation and a thunderous round of applause for you and EPL from your Shore Team, bloggers, us wannabe sailors and real sailors !!
Oh, just a little info on dolphins
that I heard on CBC radio here,
Quote:
"Humans, great apes, dolphins and elephants, well-known for their superior intelligence and complex social systems, are thought to possess the highest forms of empathy and altruism in the animal kingdom," Diana Reiss, of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, and co-author of the study, said in a media release.
I feel sure the dolphins recognize the superior intelligence of the young lady sailing along in EPL.
Be safe and enjoy a little rest.
Ozca,
from the great Bras d'Or Lakes.
Jesse
I hope you are ok and didnt get any injuries from the knockdowns - I imagine that is probably one of the longest nights you have had, each minute would feel like an hour.
Fairer winds for tomorrow and bright blue skies
Carole (Mackay) QLD
Sounds like you and EPL coped really well, it's true, your tedious hard work is paying off. As Australia day 2010 dawns, I think I can safely say who my hero is for the year. You truly are an inspiration, especially to fellow 16 year Queenslanders. Loving your journey and praying for your safety and a safe journey home.
Tight lines,
C
So glad you got through that storm!

Once again all I can say is WOW. 3 knockdowns and you calmly state, "We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK."
You must be the bravest person in the world, or at least in the south Atlantic.

Hang on there! Those pictures of the sea looked amazing!

Hi Jessica,
Do you think the person who chose the colours to indicate wind speed and wave heights on www.passageweather.com has a sense of humour?
Pink is the maximum wind and wave height colour :-)
I have no concept of how you can sail in 70 knots. My VJ dinghy regularly had at least 10 knockdowns in a race with a 10-15 knot breeze. You are awesome.
☺☺☺ Hoo roo ☺☺☺

Captain Watson,
I'm sorry that you got hammered.
Thanks for the pics.
Fair winds,
Richard Lathrop
Hey Jess,
You really are an amazing woman (I keep saying that!!), I could not imagine going through an ordeal like that, I've heard about others going through it too but to actually be there would to me be terrifying, to say the least.
God bless,
Russell

Thinking of you Jess, as you ride the storm. Take care. Do us all proud!

Jess,
You are amazing!
Hiya Jesse,
Hope you are catching up on some rest.
Oh Jesse,
You and EPL are such a great team.
Clint - Dandenong
Hey Jess
Sounds like you rode that one like the sailor you are...
Catch up on your sleep,we'll wait to hear from you.
Kathie(NYC) OXOXO
Jessica, I am sooo glad you're ok ! I can't imagine how terrying that must have been.
Thank God you're ok.
Cazz xo
Wow Jesse, that's scary and exciting at the same time. I had no idea what a knockdown was before today but to go through one sounds really scary, and going through 4 sounds terrifying. I am so glad you made it through the storm alright and will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jesse
Love and hugs

Hi Jessica,
After reading the latest news update about the storm, four knockdowns, 70 knot (80 MPH) winds all I can do is say WOW.
Safe sailing and Godspeed

I was so glad to wake this morning to discover you made it through the storm. God speed to you little lady!
Ahoy Capt. Jesse

Hi Jessica,
I’m sitting at my computer, just read the report, and I don’t know what to say.
She handled it well,”
And let’s not forget the preparation of the Skipper, I’m sure all the training you went through kicked in and had you thinking properly.
AWESOME!!!

BLOODY GOOD JOB, Miss Watson!
As our Workerbev types so well: {{{HUGS}}}
