Shooting Star and Crossing the Line Tomorrow!

I'm not much of an Astronomer but with all this talk of meteor showers last night, I was keeping an extra good eye out and did see the most amazing shooting star. It was so bright and big that I was actually a bit spooked before realizing what it was. But I can't tell you what I wished for though!

Well 'Silly' left us this morning (see pic below) but it was nice to have someone to talk to and have the company for a while. He really did have the most interesting opinions on the subjects of fashion and boys! He wasn't at all interested in any of the food I offered and didn't seem to mind the flash of the camera.

Not a real exciting day out here today, other than the usual chores, sail trimming, HF radio skeds etc. I actually slept through most of it. I'm becoming more and nocturnal lately because it's so much easier to get anything done when it cools down after the sunsets. It was good to get a few extra catnaps in while I've still got plenty of open water and nice conditions.

Dinner tonight was the yummiest omelette with powdered eggs, tinned butter, bacon bits and dried parsley.

I also attended (via a phone call!!) my first equator crossing party tonight, some of my aunties, uncles, cousins, Grandma and Granddad and all their friends got together in Cromwell in the South Island of New Zealand to celebrate Ella's Pink Lady and I crossing the line - but they were a little early!

The winds have been nice and steady all day so we've made good progress and only 50nm to the equator!! Anything could happen but right now it looks like we'll be crossing in about 10 hours which is Thursday morning back home in Australia. So it's a big day tomorrow.

Hi Jessica,
Thanks for the update on Silly the bird and soon reaching the equator! The closet poet came out of us and we wrote a poem about "pink" since it's such a gem of a color out there especially in the open seas! Here it goes:

Once upon a time there was
a blob of ink who was born
in a blink
She sailed the seas in search
of some we's and found herself
in a cob of me's
she wailed until her ink turned pink, and in a blink
she danced the seas until there were no more me's
but everybodies
soulful squeeze!
And that's the story of pink!

G'day Jesse....

' Shooting stars' while shooting the breeze, eh !! Doesn't get much better'n that !!!
So many romantic and spiritual notions associated with 'stars' aren't there !!--- and many of these are reflected in numerous songs about 'stars'.... And then, of course, there are the "ET's" which some like to speculate on. :))
Whatever, such an awesom experience that you'll surely "put in your pocket and save for a rainy day" , eh, Jess.

And _So Excellent_ to have 'touched paths' with 'Silly', too. I'm sure there'll be quite a few others dropping in on you before your Quest is over.... now that the 'word is out in seabirdland' of this 'Special Traveller' in their domain !! Hehheh.

Dinner sounds good-- But I can't wait to hear about the 'first fish' Extravaganza!!! ~~~ THAT will be 'something else'.

_Most Important... Congratulations on your Line Crossing. I'm raising a small glass of 'cheeky Shiraz' to you right now. ** Good on y'Jesse. ~ An Outstanding achievement and welcome 'milestone' of your 'way'.

OK... touched your path, yet again. Now it's 'outa y'way'.

... best wishes...

Well I must say I enjoyed my stay on your little boat Jesse. It's good to find a human who's realized that cruising around the ocean on your own is a very pleasant lifestyle – we petrels have know that for a long time of course!

I'm glad you enjoyed my fashion tips, though I'm pretty conservative in that area myself - brown feathers do it for me, every time - though I can appreciate that your toe nails should match your boat and that a sarong and a singlet makes just the right statement in your situation. Personally, I like a change of plumage at least once a year, so maybe that's something you could think about.

As far as the boy thing goes – well, I guess I should keep that private, but remember, at least you don't have to fly off and find a new shag on a rock to get a family going every year, only to have the little dears fly off into unknown dangers at a ridiculously early age. Maybe your mum could appreciate that last point though.

Anyway, must fly. Thanks for the stale cupcakes you offered (it's the thought that counts) and maybe a little fish next time?

All the best,

Its just after 8 pm here in Savannah, and I just returned from Choir Practice. As I drove back something suddenly struck my memory and when I got home I pulled out 'Maiden Voyage' and suddenley confirmed what I was thinking. You are going the opposite way around from Tania Aebis' journey. but on page 94 she says "I had a pilot chart of the entire Pacific Ocean, all 64 million miles of it. On the chart, the Marquesas were a blurry peppering of dots below the equator, almost exactly between South America and Australia..." Tania was learning to play the guitar as she made the passage through those Equatorial waters The House of The Rising Sun. A song I teach all my budding guitarists too. As Varuna cruised she learned the song 'inside and out'..and set out to master navigation. She didn't have a gps or any of those blessings..She found her way to the Carribean using RDF (Radio Direction Finding). Which truly scared her Dad as she was late arriving in St.John. How different..yet how similar..she at 18 and you at 16 similar temperament.." Anyway It was quite an awakening to realize she went toward the setting sun while you are meeting it as it rises..

Hi Jessica,
Well, it looks like I can officially congratulate you now. I just read the news from the shore crew that you officially crossed the Equator at 07:17 11-19-09. We're so proud of you young lady. Words fail to express how great it is to have been able to take part in such an enjoyable adventure. I know I'm just an armchair quarterback, but the way you write and explain what's going on makes me feel like I'm right there with you.
Congrats to your Mom & Dad and the Shore Crew as well, for helping you get this far, a good job by one and all. Great teamwork!!!
Well Jessica, continue on doing what you do best, stay safe and be alert at all times and make sure you enjoy yourself.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

If anyone is interested in getting closer to finding out what kind of bird Silly is, check this out...

http://www.ozanimals.com/Bird/South-Polar-Skua/Catharacta/maccormicki.html

If Silly is in fact related to this fellow then poor Silly is a long way from home. Or maybe he's going for the avian record of flying around the world. And the reason he flew off before the equator is that he has to fly over the equator himself as a criteria.

To blogger "Amazedbyou"...I'll be there with a bright pink T-shirt on and white SAMURAI on the back.

Hi Jess, all. Firstly congrats on crossing the equator. Next stop the date line!

I am pretty sure that Silly is a shearwater, there are a lot of them out there. Brown shearwaters come in lots of sizes and breeds but I think this one is from Christmas Island so he's not so far from home at all.

Fair winds and safe sailing.

Could Silly be a Storm-Petrel perhaps?

Storm-Petrels are seabirds in the family Hydrobatidae, part of the order Procellariiformes. These smallest of seabirds feed on planktonic crustaceans and small fish picked from the surface, typically while hovering. The flight is fluttering and sometimes bat-like.

Storm-petrels have a cosmopolitan distribution, being found in all oceans. They are strictly pelagic, coming to land only when breeding.

Its hard to tell from this picture...
