Sunny, Foggy and Flat

I know sunny and foggy isn't your normal combination and up and until yesterday I had no idea that the two could exist together either. It was certainly very strange, as one minute I had a perfect sunny conditions and the next the sun was still shining, but through a thick layer of fog. A bit odd or I thought so anyway. The fog hung around for the rest of the day and the night reminding me of the foggy conditions we had at around this latitude heading south in the Pacific.

We've also had really gentle sailing conditions, I can hardly believe how little swell there is and flat it is, which makes life nice and comfortable. We haven't been making the most amazing speeds with the light winds, but Ella's Pink Lady has been able to keep up a steady pace to the east. All this warm sunshine and easy sailing reminds me of the tropics and feels like holiday!

It's amazing that after only a few days of quiet conditions so many of my habits have changed. Mostly little things like leaving things out on the bench and sleeping out in the cockpit , its actually quite a thrill to be able to sit a cup down for a moment without it flying across the room. I have to keep reminding myself to keep everything tidy and shipshape, as I know that this will only last so long.

Only 2000nm to the Cape of Good Hope. That's going to be it from me today as I'm keen to get back outside into the sunshine!

Jesse

Hello dear Jessica,

I am delighted, that you can experience a holiday.

Enjoy the moment, one after another!

Yes, in calmer conditions one would settle into a more 'normal' routine!

To be grateful for small mercies is to build up your 'bank account' of good feelings and that kind of attitude, which you have been putting into practice anyway, makes for even better times ahead!

Jessica, you are a gem and I am happy with you, that your coffee cup stays put, where you placed it.

In fact, it makes me more mindful to look for the small mercies in my daily life!

You have done it again, inspired me to have good feelings and therefore add to a better life's experience!

Thank you Jessica,

I am puffing out my cheeks in your direction and send you good winds.

Fly, Captain Jessica,
keep well, happy and above all safe,

The last photo too is delightful, you look (you are) so happy!

Hi Jesse,

You paint an ethereal picture with the sun shining through fog, like Ella's Pink Lady floating in a dream and combined with the flat sea, sounds beautiful.

I like that you can leave a cup on the bench today without it "flying across the room"! I can understand why you are enjoying this respite. I can imagine you lying on the deck reading a book, soaking up the sunshine and just chilling for the day but don't forget to take some photos of the sunshine shining through the fog before you get too relaxed! I really like the sound of that.

Enjoy your rest Jesse,

Dear Jessica, As a Mom thinking about you so often since you left I must compliment you and your team for taking the time to get your Ella's Pink Lady in shape to take such a long trip. It really says a great deal about that planning for you and Ella to be knocked down 4 times in wicked weather and to snap back with not too many bruises and your dunny in pieces. I have a couple of sailboats but only sail on lakes here in Minnesota USA. Your sailboat must be a hardy boat. And we all know that you are the hardiest of Aussies. OyOyOy. Haha. In the states we always think of Aussies as always yelling out: AUSSIE AUSSIE OYOYOY.

You have probably heard by now that Abby Sunderland, in "Wild Eyes" is having to put in at Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico to work out problems with her energy generation / consumption, and the windspeed measuring system, after her first 8 days at sea.

Her team is flying down to meet her and work things out, then she is going to restart her attempt from there.

I guess the good news is Cabo is going to be WAY more fun to party in than Marina Del Rey, California for her return in a few months. It is a resort and serious party destination for young Americans. You should come.

Hi Jessica

Enjoy your “holiday” while it lasts. Isn’t it great to be able to put things down in the cabin, go out into the cockpit, and later find them in the same place in the cabin. Strangely I am reminded of my early days sailing in a catamaran race in very light wind - with everything cleated on - until we were hit by a small bullet of wind which caused us to gracefully roll over. Bottled unexpectedly. We, skipper and crew, were both on the lee side at the time so there was no ballast to hold the boat against the gust. we were in a race, and leading boat, so we righted as quickly as possible, and sailed on with me (crew) out on trapeze for most of the remainder of the race.

That’s my short story for the day. I hope you and Ella’s Pink Lady can maintain some good progress. I sense that now you are on the return , so to speak, you are chafing at the bit (how’s that for horse language?) and urging EPL to go as fast as possible back home. I’ve got a dog like that. On the way out he walks slowly but on the way home the pace quickens.

Stay alert and positive and fly along home.

Hi Jess,

I must admit that all of us Jessiholics, (I really can't deny it any longer), enjoy the quiet calm sunny days you are having. Although it really is quite selfish on our part... the quieter & calmer it is, the more often you blog! And for some reason we never get a video when EPL is being thrown about in 9 meter waves?

It was great to see you on video again and I'm glad you can relax bit out on deck. Enjoy it! As you say... it can only last so long.

I remember it was once extremely foggy and on a whim I paddled the kayak straight out into the bay for about 2 - 3 minutes and stopped. Couldn't see a thing, but oh so peaceful... after a while I decided to head back in and got my bearings by listening to the waves gently breaking on shore. Your description of your foggy day brought this happy memory back for me.

Anyway, just wanted to tell you that besides our "webkinz orca" mascot, we now have a number of "Auzzie Webkinz" coming to class... so today's photo is of Orca and a few of her new friends!

Good morning Jess,
Great to read your message about confusing foggy/sunny conditions out there, sounds like a chance to rejuvenate, not to mention doing school work.
Talk about confusing, I read in today’s “Sunday Mail” where your mum says you battled with dyslexia and that her reading of Jesse Martin’s book Lionheart to you made you realize he was just a normal human being. There’s probably a lesson for all of in there somewhere.

He, as you, probably will never know the positive influence you generate by allowing us to know who you are and how normal you are via your blog. I find this hard to understand, as for most of us ordinary achievers it is hard to relate to you (or for that matter any of your fellow circumnavigators) as being anything but super human. I guess we also need bravery, work ethic, and natural survival skills etc. to achieve what you are doing.

Thanks for taking us along for the trip and for the inspiration,

Ron, Brisbane.

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
Just watched your video, didn't realise till this morning you had a new one up. First thing I noticed when the video started was your voice...it seems to have mellowed and you sounded so relaxed and beautifully harmonised with your surroundings. Mother nature influenses our whole being in ways we don't always realise. In "Sunny, foggy and flat" you wrote about being in really gentle sailing conditions with very little swell and flat ocean. Your tone of voice reflected that and the nice and comfortable life you say you're presently experiencing. Having said all that, I hope that the fog has lifted considerably by now and you are once again able to enjoy the sunshine and get lots of Vitamin D. Speaking of which, some Omega 3 would be great about now too...any bites or nibbles yet?
A smile tickled my face when you mentioned being able to sit a cup down without it flying across the room. Don't you hate it when that happens? I always found the gimballed stove to be a very handy place to set things down on for a while, at least for a bit more insurance.
You said only 2000nm to go before Cape of Good Hope...that sounds so far away and a lot can happen between now and then...

Hi Jesse
I think what you are experiencing is a sea mist not an actual fog. Fog is low cloud were as sea mist (I think) is water droplets in the air caused through evaporation thus the sun and fog scenario.

Don't forget to keep a weather eye out for any sudden changes but at the same time enjoy your little holiday.

Jesse this seems a dumb question I know after all the sailing experience and work you put into getting your Lady ready for sea, Why is Abby setting sail with only 6 months sailing experience? By her comments the boat is some what ill prepared, leaving behind essential equipment like knives forks and spoons?
At no stage have I ever doubted your skill and knowledge as a sailor.
Please dont get me wrong I am not issuing a challenge between you both I am concerned for the young woman and I was hoping you may help put my mind at ease.

Hi Jess,

so only some 2000nm to Cape of Good Hope, guess if you average say around 100nm per 24hours you pass under the cape avoiding the "Cape Rollers" around the 20th February, and my rough eta for you sailing into Sydney Harbour is around early-mid May, maybe even late April if the
wind and sea conditions treat you well, this is great as you can certainly get some nasty storms in the southern ocean and up the East coast of Australia starting around mid-may. You're a swell gal, so impressed, you're teaching me we can triumph over any obstacles life throws at us.

We have similar strange weather..i.e. started out rain went sunny and now is foggy misty rain..Worse in mid US though. Snow and ice millions without power for possibly up to 2 weeks..I'm quite pleased with your gentle breezy weather. You needed a break from the rough stuff..even if you are one tough cookie! (wouldn't want to contradict Mom :O))
I was just watching your early videos and different ones as you went along..you've matured..more than you know..The sea is a harsh mistress is something I always heard..when I was riding around on a flat top (carrier) in the Navy..it had one meaning..but I think the weather turning on a dime (small space) fits too..Quirky storms and gales out of nowhere..

Hey we're just glad to know you are enjoying the ride, and getting back to some semblence of order..I wouldn't rush all those nm to come..just take is easy..one day at a time..savor each and be thankful for the protection and wonder of it all..Memories are made of this..and Thank you as so many have said for sharing them with us..your adoptives...and friends and well wishers..Be Blessed Miss Jess..

I'm sure the gentle sailing conditions are a treat. A bit like cruising the Whitsundays when the SEs aren't flying through. It's great that you can put something down without having to tie it down. And these conditions will allow your bruises to heal too. Your body must look like a cricketer's after facing a fast bowling attack!

She spoke of your being diagnosed in pre-school with severe dyslexia and what an effort it was for you to to become the articulate, well written young woman you are today.

I thought I had run the gamut of being impressed by your character and accomplishments but this just adds yet another dimension to the remarkable person you are.

Well done Jesse on being so inspirational, in so many ways, to so many people.

That reminds me, I was curious about this once before, but your mention of similar conditions around the same latitude in the South Pacific inspired the question again, besides this blog, do you keep a log? Not that you SHOULD. I was just curious.
I'm glad you have some decent conditions there, and I hope you see more of the same--as long as you are moving at the rate you are comfortable with.
Take care and blessings,

Jess--I had so much admiration and respect for you before, but now I'm almost speechless. From not being able to read a few years ago, to being on the verge of writing a book is unbelievable!

You are--and will be, an inspiration to more people than you will ever know.

Hi Jess

Great to hear that you have some smooth sailing and pleasant weather. Just soaking up the sun will recharge your batteries and bring back the colour in your pretty cheeks. Enjoy!!

The sun through the fog sounds beautiful.

Have you heard that Abby is having problems and has to make for port in Mexico after 9 days to fix up her power supply etc. She hopes to meet her team to fix up the issues and restart when all is fixed.

Enjoy your peaceful interlude while you can.

Good travelling.

Me again. I just saw the comment that mentioned you have dyslexia, so I googled the article. It evoked three responses in me. My estimation has gone up maybe a million percent - so much that numbers become useless for measuring it. I feel very, very ashamed of hobbling around with a little broken toe at the moment as if it is something terrible! The other 9 toes are just fine after all, and the bit of pain will pass!
And boy am I resolved to achieve at the new venture I am beginning - a Ph.D. at the ripe old age of 57. If you can navigate etc etc etc with dyslexia, when once you couldn't count or read because of it, I can do a Ph.D. and earn a bit of money at the same time. I have tears in my eyes as I type this just thinking about your level of achievement.

You are truly an inspiration!

A few questions for you. How often have you used the sail on your inner forestay? What sail do you have on it e.g. No4 or storm jib? What conditions were you in when you used it?
I am thinking of doing the same mod but am unsure of its value.

The weather you are describing is similar in several places, most notably in San Fransisco. It can be sunny and 27C at noon time then by 2pm foggy and 10C with the sun barely getting through the fog.

Anyways, just be careful about leaving things lying around. But it is nice to put down a cup and not having to lunge for it as the ship rolls.

Hi Jess, so glad things are nice and calm now and you can catch your breath. I just spent two gorgeous days away at the beach for the last weekend of the Vic holidays. It was so relaxing, even with very cute but noisy, overfed possums leaping onto the roof at 4am! With no internet there I was wondering how you were going, so great to get back and hear all is well with you. Not long now until the next milestone. Keep smiling and stay safe.

Hey Jesse, Glad you are able to enjoy the calm, holiday like conditions this is a very well earned 'breather' for you and EPL to have a bit of relax time. Enjoy the sunshine too! I imagine it is a lot easier to get your ship organised without walking on the walls and chasing cups of coffee around the cabin !! LOL

Your descriptions really imagine just what it is like. Loved the photo of you in the new T Shirt - your mum is so thoughtful, she packed that in the foodbag for after the Cape Horn milestone. Only 2000nm to go to Cape of good hope - thats fantastic. Like you said in the video every nm now is one step closer to home. Im wondering how the mainsail repair went and have you had to replace any sheets and running gear? I bet you are also thankful for a hard dodger which has withstood the knockdowns. Would love to hear whether much water came in the cabin during those awful knockdowns and CANT WAIT for your book.

Well done Jesse - enjoy your calmer days, still keep clipped on and we look forward to your next blog.

So happy you're officially sailing home....yup, that certainly makes sense; it's the return trip now.

I wonder what other goodies and new clothing are stowed away in the food bags......a lovely new set of clothes for the welcome back to Sydney harbor?!

I haven't had a chance to read everyone's blogs so I feel a little out of touch. I did glance at a few and saw the mention of the article about your learning challenges. I read your blog entries for the year (or two?) before you left in October, so I knew of your struggle with dyslexia. Knowing that you've been so challenged in school has made me appreciate you and your desire to DO THE JOURNEY by yourself.

I taught children with severe learning disabilities for ten years in CA and have always had a deep appreciation for the complexities of learning styles. There's a door for everyone, Jess. You've walked through yours and I couldn't be happier for you than I am now.

With love and deep respect to you.
Safe sailing, Captain.

1 Corinthians 13:12-13 (The Message)

12 We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! 13 But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.

Good evening to you, Jesse. Though I posted a note earlier today, I couldn't resist checking again before turning in, and am glad to see a positive, calm report this evening. Couldn't resist copying these words of Paul the Apostle written in his letter to the Corinthians when I read your strange report of the fog in the day.

Here's hoping that you'll experience His love and trust steadily in Him who has gotten you this far on your journey. I hope you did in fact enjoy some deep warm sleep in the cockpit as you described. As I drift off this evening in real calm and certainty, I will be praying for you out there, for your safety and good health, continued progress, and for your family back at home tracking you and supporting you as they can.

Blessings to you for a grand day of rest on Sunday!

Hi Jesse,

I refrained from commenting while you rounded Cape Horn and described that harrowing storm, knowing the whole world was watching and chiming in. I'm one of many surrogate grandfathers following this marvelous accomplishment of yours and I'm greatly pleased you're enjoying some pleasant weather (if not speed).

Hiya Jesse,

Yeah, you have just described me on a Sunday morning..foggy and flat. I am in need of some sunny action although I am listening to the lovely rain. We need that too.

Your sunny, foggy and flat would be so much nicer though. Must be a bit hard on the eyes though, is it glary? Would be nice to see. At least you are still getting power into the solar panels with all that fog, excellent !!

Light winds and a steady pace is a good for you now. I can see the upside of being able to have a nice cuppa without having to hunt it down about the place, that would be a welcomed change.

Things will pick up before you know it, so enjoy the easiness of it all. You may be able to bake your famous muffins !

2000nm to Cape of Good hope. That is unreal...!! You certainly have been making excellent ground in your journey?? Just past the Cape of Good Hope as your eyes look forward it will be the West Coast of Australia...!!! Well, there is a fair bit of the never never blue to cross, but still exciting...!!

I see a post from Qlder' that Abby may have had to abort and restart?? So I am off to see if all is ok with Abby. I hope she is safe and it is only a technical issue. Take care Jesse, have fun turn the music up...ENJOY. Cheers Paula

Cooeee Jesse from sunny ( but no fog!) South Australia! :)

Great that you're able to enjoy some quiet time and just enjoy it all.

My husband was a 20 year navy man and he often tells of the beauty of the ocean being calm and flat.

Often, when it was like that, the ship would anchor and
they used to have what was called "swimming stations". Whereby some sailors would be on guard with rifles and the other crew members would dive in for a swim out there in that vast ocean!

Crazy buggers! LOL
Now you know what our navy gets up to out there ... don't be surprised if you come across one of our ships and you see this happening! You're not imagining it! :)

Wishing you continued safety and fair winds, Jesse!

Cheers from the Soldier's Mum in SA.

Shame!I can only think that they were most unimpressed that there was nothing for them, well they can get st*ffed (literally....hope this comment gets past Andrew the blogmaster LOL) How did your Mum know just when to pack it for you to open? That wasn't a co-incidence as far as I'm concerned.

You look fantastic in the photo, so well and happy, it's now my new desktop photo, replacing the one of the moon at midnight on NYE.

Hi Jessica,

It sounds like you're in a temperature inversion, with warmer air atop trapping the cooler fog-laden air beneath.....happens often here in Vancouver (lat 49°N) usually in the winter with fog at ground level, and a brightness that says it's a beautiful sunny day up above, if only the damned fog would lift...which it doesn't cos there's not a puff of wind anywhere.

It's good to hear that you're able to enjoy some warm relaxation for a while.....hopefully not too long, tho, as we're sure you're anxious to get goin' again.

Jessica,

NOW, you’re talking about conditions that I can REALLY relate to. The years that I spent commercial fishing off of the northwest coast of the U.S. were quite often like what you are describing. So many days, I would be in beautiful sunny conditions but would see what looked like a concrete wall ahead of me. A fog bank. And then I would hit it. Sometimes it would be like going from day to night and at other times it would be like you describe it. Fog, but I would see the opaque sunshine through it. I’m one who loves the warm, sunny weather but the conditions that you describe have added so much to my life experiences. Jess, you are just adding to the collection of stories to tell for the rest of your life.

Have fun, stay safe and happy sailing.

HELLO JESSE - Just thought I would check on you this evening and great! another up-date.

You telling us about your sun and fog experience. I have known it here in Picton especially when we have had a warm day before, we wake up to thick fog and one can see the sun trying to get through. Then fog comes down and sits on the harbour and marina water while the sun is out above. The fog then slowing just melts away and we usually get a beautiful day with clear blue sky.

Sorry my writing skills are not up to your very interesting standard but had to tell you about it.

Our weather, after having some beautiful hot days (25c) hot enough for me, has now become very cool and very windy with a little rain. Most of the North Island is having lots of torrential rain. We are not having a good summer at.

Anyway, not much news but just wanted to check in and say hi!

Thinking of you, keep safe.

Hi Jesse - you appear quite relaxed today and enjoying a holiday atmosphere. Beats the hell out of school - huh!! Put the 2000nm on the back burner and set some shorter goals. The CoGH will appear soon enough - just concentrate on getting things done on a day to day basis and keep the important tasks to the forefront of your mind. I keep harping on being in the moment and safety first because I am aware how quickly the conditions can change. I ride a surf board and believe me it can change very quickly even in that situation and where you are in comparison just has to be more tricky and unpredictable.

You are doing wonderfully well and it's the quiet days that you have to catch up on the chores but also to give a little bit of attention to number one and I might add, a 'special' one at that.

'til next time precious girl be happy, be in the moment and be a safety first thinker. Take care, love ya and God Bless.

Hi Jessica,
I’m so glad that you can enjoy the sunshine and the smooth sailing. Get out there and soak it all up. What a change for you, but I’ve said it before ’you deserve it’ so enjoy the sun while it’s there. Just leisurely laying about in the South Atlantic, what a life. You’ve worked for it though. God Bless Ya.
Sometimes, like right now, when I’m typing a message to you, I get a giddy feeling within myself, knowing that you are having a good time. I can just feel the happiness, don’t know whether to laugh or cry, so sometimes I do a little of both. lol…. There’s a word for it but I can’t think of it right now. I guess it’s just the excitement. WOW!!!!!
I’m glad you realize that this could end quickly, and keep a tight ship, have you got them scallywags to do a clean sweep down fore and aft yet? Or are they still sulking over the cookie?
Although it’s not really funny, I had to laugh about the cup flying across the room, just imagining how nice and smooth things are going right now, as compared to a few days ago.
Yeah, don’t get complacent (it doesn’t sound like you are) and stay alert, on your tippy toes. And keep smiling. Are you doing any fishing?
Yes Jessica, enjoy your Holiday

Hi Lori: Just wanted to return your ‘Hello’.

For Erica: That’s ok, look at all the laughs you just got over something I didn’t see. lol….. Say what????

Susan in Melbourne, Really enjoyed your post, how true.

You know Jessica, when your book comes out it’s going to be so much fun to read, especially for all the faithful followers, when we come to certain passages in the book we’ll remember all that transpired at that time with all the posts that were sent in regarding that particular situation. I’m really looking forward to settling into my armchair and reading, reading and reading some more. I’ll bet there’ll be a lot of laughing as well, and probably a few tears.

Abby had to put into Cabo san Lucas...
She’s not able to generate enough power with her solar panels and the wind generators to keep up with her energy needs.

Take good care of yourself and the scallywags and enjoy your leisure time and the warmth of the sun.
Always thinking of you.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.

Sunny and foggy at the same time! Isn't the world a funny place? How clever of you to realize not to get too comfortable and to be prepared, as the weather could change. Still it must be nice to experience some calm after the wild ride you had last week.

Sail safe,

Captain Jesse the Explorer

Hi, Good Captain Jesse.
Catching up on the Blog. See you are progressing well after the storm. Good on you! (a Texan talking Aussie; see the affect you are having across the world!)

Regarding the school work you were trying to find a couple of days ago- you can always say you lost it in the last storm.

So happy you are having some nice days. Stay dry and cheerful, Brave Captain. Onward Mates! Australia or Bust!

Love the cover of your future book. What a "sunshine" smile.

For Jessica, about…

Would you like me to tell you a little story? I'm sure you do.

As an old kid I (45° 31′ 0.02″ N, 73° 39′ 0.02″ W) would misread a word most often than others. No matter how much I was corrected, no matter how many times I would be told to spell it slooowly, as soon as I had just read it, yes, I would say another word ( which doesn't exist at all ).

[And sometimes people would just interpret that word ( which doesn't exist ) along their own thought processes so it would have meaning to them – people are so strange don't you think? ;-)].

On with my story.

The correct word is 'restaurant' - think you can guess what 'my' word was?. Try.

Anyway, noticed how the menu reads nowadays in restaurants? Looks like a Harry Potter formula doesn't it? It's almost impossible to figure out what the dish is about ( and if you ask for an explanation, it usualy gets worst). Words becoming meaningless.

So. My word was 'sertaurant' - you can guess the many interpretations I have had to hear.
Anyway, it never stopped me from having a seat and ordering what I wanted. Why? Because I didn't have a problem with the concept or the actual 'thing' that is a restaurant.
What it did, ( and a few other words and miswritten phone numbers later- oh! that's another thing but I guess you want to get to the end of this story first, right?) is to get me to order my thoughts, test the reality that words represent, play with the concepts and most important give meaning to what … I mean. To think.
( I know by now you might doubt that 'cause of the way this post is going – but that is a writer's trick – ok-ok, some other day on this one…or maybe not ).

So, what is all that about? It is about you developping a style of your own, what writers sometimes call a 'voice' along with your many accomplishments. That voice is all of you: sister, friend, skipper, team leader, artist of the seas, writer, etc.

You are not who you are as a correction to something called dyslexia. That is just a personal trait that you have on top of all your qualities, like being a 'soft paw' ( a lefty – are you?). In a phrase as in many you are a true Master at what you do and all of your 'voice' is unique – ask your bloggers! :-)

Keep smiling, be safe.

PS
I still like it when people read to me.

PPS
Back to sailing as Soren would say.

Towards cape town the fog may fall on you within minutes. They call it the "Devils Table clothe".
Watch out for Container vessel trafic comming down from Europe.

The more , gales comming down from the mountain are not showing any ripples on th water giving you hardly any time to reduce sail.

Hi Jesse

It's so nice to hear that you are enjoying some calmer conditions. Enjoy the sunshine Jesse and kick back a bit - you deserve a little rest. I am certain that there are more challenges in the midst or should I say 'Mist' !!! Knowing that you have just come through some fog! I do love a good fog, everything seems so mystical and eerie.

You sound incredibly contented in your last blog. Enjoying the simple pleasures in life - like basking in the sun and also being able to sleep out in the cockpit and the calmer waters. Hey,don't forget your sunscreen.

Get some good sleep credit stored up before the weather changes or you hit traffic!!

We have also had a mixed bag of weather here in Sydney this weekend - no fog though! We went to the outdoor cinema on Saturday night and saw a movie. It looked ominous all Saturday, like there was going to be a massive down pour to spoil the night. But it didn't happen! We had a great evening laying out under the stars on bean bags with a huuuge picnic full of goodies, watching Michael Jackson's 'This Is It'. And today we saw Avatar in 3D, so it's been a movie weekend.

So you, EPL and the crew only have 2000nm to the Cape of Good Hope - great progress Jesse!

Time to go and watch the Mens final of the Tennis. Federer V's Murray. Should be exciting!

Have a good Jesse & Stay Safe!

Hello Captain Jesse Tough Cookie of the Seven Seas,
Paris is inundated with a beautiful sunny light, and the sky is almost all blue, excpet for a tiny white cloud in the South. Makes me think of Ella's Pink Lady's white sails looking like a bright spot on the immense blue Ocean...

In fact, this message is less for you than for your partner, I mean Ella's Pink Lady. My old Mom called me this morning to met me know that tomorrow is Saint Ella's day, and as the tradition wants the wishes to be made on the Feast day's eve, may I ask you to pass her our very best wishes for a happy and merry return trip to Sydney, for herself, her beloved skipper, and their famous crew?
By the way, all my family joins me to wish both of you some of our sunny weather, but not too much, as the trees in front of my window show we have absolutely no breeze at all. Just calm and cold.

Please, windy Deities, push our Ladies out of that fog and help them speeding East... We have Good Hope in mind!

Go on, sailor! Play some music and sing...
Your armchair choirs are ready.

@AlbacoreLiaFail... There will certainly be a Tour. But why only a Book tour? It would be fun having also a singing tour, Jessica leading with Christmas songs, performing her famous spider impersonation with guitars, microphones and clarinets, and Them Scallywags dancing in the background.
@Howdy. I am sure Andrew has some merchandising in sight. Mugs are an obvious part of it. Tough Cookies T-shirts will be more difficult, I think they are from David & Goliath, UK. Maybe Aunt Sam could draw different ones (tuff for tough, and another cookie"s face and attitude, more Jessica-looking one?).
@Evie. About Abby, she hasn't been sailing for 6 months, but snce she was 6 months old.
@Magpie, what a teacher you are! LOL

@Howdy, love your idea about Jesse's team selling the mug to blog-watch with---a BLUG? or a MOG?

Jesse, your mom's comments about you struggling with dyslexia gives me all the more respect for you, and the fact that you zeroed in on something that grabbed you and you have not given in to frustration.

You are extraordinary! So how about that book signing tour--port-to-port, of course--along with a freight crew by land to see your books and items from place to place, and we get to meet you! Please say yes! We'll drive to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, L.A.--wherever! Bring those blog mugs, or MOGS. Pink would be good. or black with a pink and white Ella Pink Lady logo, or a "tough cookie." Thanks!

G'day Jesse,
Gee you've got Andrew working real hard to keep up with you and your blog's....not to mention all the little extras we get elsewhere on Jessicawatson.com!

Say does EPL have a Fog Horn?....I can just imagine that little boat making one hell of a noise with a Fog Horn sounding every couple of minutes!

Abby's had to pull in at a Port in Cabo to get some of her electrics sort out so she'll have to "restart" her journey from Cabo, just a small setback but she'll be on her way soon enough!

Anyway...the weather conditons sound very nice, I hope it holds out like that for another day at least...

Gotta go...work tomorrow!

So glad to hear that you are relaxing during this calm spell. As long as EPL is moving you are at least running your easting down and every mile brings you closer to home. Rest is important for the very real challenges that lay ahead. The Indian Ocean and the southern Ocean around the south of Australia can be tough going, but you and EPL will do it I'm sure.

SaltyDog said...

To Evie from Bendigo,

I saw that you were questioning how Abby Sunderland was being allowed to set sail with only 6 months sailing experience and I understand your concern. I think that you might have mis-read the bio on Abby. She has been sailing since she was 6 months old. Abby’s father, Laurence Sunderland, is a British-trained shipwright and owner of Sunderland's Yacht Management in Marina del Rey. Abby has done solo deliveries for her father's company since she was 13. Abby has essentially grown up on and around sail boats so sailing is a way of life for the Sunderland family.

I think that all of us have feel like protective grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters to Jessica. That’s apparent by the outpouring of well deserved love that we all show. And by now, we all understand how incredibly well prepared, organized and experienced Jessica and her team are. I’m not qualified to comment specifically on the preparation of Abby’s boat, Wild Eyes, as I only know as much as I’ve read on her blog and various news stories. But I do know that her family and team are extremely experienced and have been through the preparation for a solo circumnavigation with Abby’s brother Zac. I get the impression that neither Jessica nor Abby feel any kind of challenge between each other. In fact they both have been extremely supportive of each other and I believe that they only wish each other a safe and successful circumnavigation.

As one of Jessica’s protective, loving “uncles” I wish Abby all of the best and I don’t think that her very experienced family would consider allowing her to attempt anything that she isn’t qualified for. Hope this helps ease your mind, Evie.

With warm regards.

Now.. isn't this the MOST REMARKABLE thing ever.

Here we have brave adventures who are sailing around the world alone in a tiny little boat... and WE the arm chair captains, ( even though some of us DO sail our own boats in our own local waters) can check on the progress DAILY. 20 years ago.. heck.. even 5 years ago.. This sort of thing would take place and the rest of the avid followers would only know about the adventure when they made port. TODAY.... not only can we follow day by day.. but I see messages and info going from One Blog to the other Blog.

I can follow Jessica and cheer her on.. then I can switch pages and see what Abby is up to... When Laura gets her boat in the pond and gets going we can all cheer for her...

What a wonderful technological age of information we live in..

Jessica... YOU GO GIRL... you give me the inspiration to take my 27' Ericson to places far off...
