Highlights From An Incredible Few Days!

I'm going to apologize in advance for the over-use of exclamation marks (!), but it's certainly been an amazing few days! Sorry not to have updated you all earlier on my side of events, but after running on not much more than adrenalin for a good 4 days, I've only had one thing on my mind - sleep!

So much has happened lately. So many highs. But I'm going to start at the beginning with Tuesday and 60nm between us and the Cape. Passing squalls, the waves standing up a little as we passed in to shallower water, the wind settling into a consistent 40knots by nightfall, all made life pretty interesting.

But the fast disappearing miles till the Cape and sighting land (Diego Ramirez Island) on that afternoon had me completely pumped up and totally bouncing with excitement! Seeing land after so long was incredible. I can hardly remember feeling so thrilled, which when I think about it, seems like a bit of an overreaction considering I couldn't actually see anything more
than the outline of a grey bit of rock disappearing frequently, as we dropped into the troughs between waves. Through my eyes at the time, that distant bit of rock was the most beautiful and incredible thing I'd seen. It's amazing how deprivation can make something look a million times more special! I imagine that my first long hot shower when I get back home will be much the same!

That night was a busy and sleepless one as we approached the Cape. To ensure that we didn't just go surfing by in the dark, I put a bit of effort into slowing us down and just as it was getting light, there it was - the distinctive outline of Cape Horn!

Against the grey sky and with albatrosses flying in the foreground, it was just as I'd imagined for so long. Mythical and striking pretty much sums it up! The poor visibility didn't exactly make it the best sightseeing weather, but if we'd drifted comfortably by on a nice sunny day, it wouldn't have been half as special! In between taking pictures and phone calls, it was an extremely proud moment!

Then the flyover with Mum and Dad sure turned out to be quite an adventure in itself. With pretty poor weather conditions it was only on the third attempt that the plane managed to find Ella's Pink Lady. I'm sure you can imagine what an emotional roller-coaster it was for me, not to mention Mum and Dad. First I'd hear that they'd just taken off and would be overhead within a few hours. Then would come the bad news that they had to turn back! When the plane finally did find us, the 45 minutes that they spent overhead, passed in an extremely fast blur. I got myself very dizzy and totally tangled up in my tethers watching then fly around in circles! In the end I think it was a good thing that I couldn't really make out Mum and Dad through the windows, because if I had been able to I don't think that I would have managed to keep my composure. I owe a really big thanks to everyone who made the flyover happen.

Mostly the wind has been nice to us over the last two days and we're already very close to the Falklands. But with quite a bit of shipping around and with the side effects of all that adrenalin, I hardly managed any sleep at all till yesterday. Today I was treated to full clear skies and tonight I've got stars like I haven't had in a very long time!

But I haven't been the only one not getting a lot of sleep lately. Mum, Dad, Bruce and Andrew have all been keeping very strange hours and they're only a few of a very long list of people that played a huge part in seeing Ella's Pink Lady and I safely around the Cape. Thanks a million!!

Love Jesse

Jesse,
There's a rumor going around about this 16 yr old out on a sailboat,
and one pretty windy, drizzly, foggy day she saw this big mythical looking rock poking up from the ocean in the distance, along with a few birds, a few other boats, and a plane... and that's about it, other than something about soup and biscuits and a cape and a horn, which I didn't totally get.
No big deal, right? Wrong.
Multitudes of people...like hundreds of thousands, or even MILLIONS! thought this was really cool! I mean really, REALLY cool! So cool, that they all got really emotional. They wept! and cheered! and hooted! and smiled! and laughed! and wept some more! (I wonder if the weeping was because the sailboat was pink...?)
Naturally, with all the excitement, everyone wanted to see pictures! videos! Of what? (you might wonder) Of the rock, the plane, the boats, and the girl! ...of course! (it's not like there was anything else to take a picture of, except soup and biscuits). I hear she had this starry, far away look in her eyes, which considering this whole crazy story, doesn't surprise me at all!
It gets still crazier, because newspapers and tellies ran big, BIG stories about this with pictures and videos!
And, get this... everyone was SO happy and relieved that she was safe, like the rock or the birds or the airplane or the boats were dangerous (I suppose she could have choked on the soup, or a bird flying overhead could've...)
I didn't hear anything about blowing the horn or wearing the cape, so I don't know what that has to do with anything.
Just stop for a moment, and think about this! It made BIG-TIME news... all-around-the-world!! Do you have any idea how big this world is?
So now, people want her to write a book...an entire book!
Wow! How interesting can a rock, a plane, a few birds, and a few boats be? I hope she's good at writing. She could include practical things, like cooking soup or making biscuits (and other baked goodies), or learning to play the horn and or make capes (maybe that was crepes and I heard it wrong).
Anyways, I hear she's off looking for a few more rocks.
I mentioned she's on a sailboat, didn't I? Crazy, huh?

Hi Jesse

fantastic blog you wrote - as others have said, never appologise for not writing more, or sooner. Your words are fantastic and have sown a whole crop of ardent followers - over 1100 people congratulated you on your rounding of the Cape. But, we also realise that you have a whole lot of other stuff to keep doing, like sailing, checking gear, navigating, sail chages, cooking, maintenance - not to mention sleep where possible. So, when rounding the Cape in 40 knts with a 3-4 m swell, we can hardly complain when we don't get a daily blog from you. And, the videos of you, and that "grey lump of rock" were fantasitic - thanks Andrew and others....

Just viewed the video of EPL from the air (for about the 6th or 7th time), and saw your parents. How proud they looked, and rightly so.

I saw a small pink boat in a rolling blue-grey sea, but sailing steadily on into destiny in Sydney. I love what you (and your team) are doing - letting those of us who can only dream of doing what you do share your dreams with you. You are an inspiration to help us all get out and start to actually live our dreams.

As always, take care out there.

Hi Jess
Sounds like you are having a brilliant time. It is just wonderful to hear how much fun you are having. I can understand the anxiety you had waiting for your parents to ‘drop by’ and say g’day. But what a ride you are having!!!!!

I was sitting in a CafĂ© up in Mooloolaba yesterday and saw the double page spread on you in the local rag; FYI, no more/less of a rag than the South East Advertiser (Brisbane)! You were on the front page as well as the double page spread inside. There was a really great aerial shot, no doubt taken by your mum or dad, of you and EPL in the thick of it. I am not sure if the press made up the comment attributed to you but you and EPL did look great. What I really loved about the shot was that it showed EPL just carving her wave through the water. Her line was as smooth as silk! It was a photographic perspective taken under conditions which really highlighted what a handsome Yacht she is and what a great job of set and trim you have been doing. You both didn’t look good, you looked great!!

I am back in Brisbane from Mooloolaba as university is back tomorrow. Clearly from my results I need to spend more time studying and less time following your adventure. Not to mention dumping Facebook and other time wasters. Still, it is kind of good (safe for the public) that you can’t just breeze through medicine. Maybe I’ll just dump Facebook because your adventure is just too exciting to put down. And I’d rather be sailing.

The beach (Mooloolaba) was fabulous today. Really crowded. But no Blue Bottles despite the warnings. Really hot though. My son and I did some fishing off the Mooloolaba Groyne from 05:00 before spending the rest of the morning at the beach. After paying you out a little about your fishing skills, we caught nothing. Clearly what goes around comes around! In fact, we could see some amazing John Dory from the rocks but couldn’t catch anything on our lines. That said, it was hot by 07:00 so we left to go swimming/surfing. When I head back up next weekend after uni I think that we are going to try the canals near the first bridge (?Brisbane Road) as you head out of town; less boat traffic.

We are all so happy for you with what you have achieved.

Nighty night Jess. Sail safe, sail fast.

Hi Jesse,

As usual you kept your composure and held it together as you neared the Cape. Slowing your lovely
EPL down overnight! I don't know if I could have done that in all the excitment.

It's great that your Mum and Dad did see your boat, if only for a tiny speck in the ocean. Another great milestone achieved Jesse. I'm glad that you have caught up on some shut eye.

I won't ramble on too much here as I know you have many lovely messages to read from the rest of your faithful blogging family.

Take care my dear, keep safe. You are in my prayers for a safe journey home. Lots of hugs. Jan (Auckland, New Zealand)

Hi Jessica,
How are you doing…....yeah, well that's good, I'm glad to hear that. Have you been able to get plenty of rest and eating and drinking enough…....Well that's good to, but don't overdo it, if you sleep to much them scallywags will get into your chocolate supply and then what are you gonna do???? (Somebody is gonna be doing some thinking). LOL.....
I just finished reading a whooooooole bunch of posts and looking at a lot of your video's. Copied numerous links to more video's that came highly recommended, and I'm sure they will be fantastic, Oh by the way, you're in them. LOL.... Got to be good. Yes?.....

When I was watching your Mum talking to you, I couldn't help but notice how relaxed she was with the phone, definitely not the first time. What a video that was. The shots of you and EPL rocking and rolling on the waves was awesome, even your Mum commented on one wave getting under you. That was funny. I hope they had a smooth and safe trip home, for your Dad's sake.

There's a total of 1139 posts on your last blog, so far. That's amazing!!! Just shattering records like a bowling ball shattering pins. Samurai did a nice job on that poster she made for your record breaking feats.
I know it’s been a few days ago, but I’m glad you enjoyed the sky full of stars, that’s always a beautiful sight.

Well, I figure that you're somewhere South of the Falkland Islands now, hope all is going well for you and your little fuzzy friends.
Take good care of yourself and the crew, keep up the good work Jessica and be safe. I’m off to bed.

Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.

Out of the Pacific and on to the Atlantic. Congratulations!
Take your long hot shower in Sydney; our glorious and beloved leader Captain Bligh restricts us on the Sunshine Coast to three minute showers even though our dams are overflowing. Go over your ration and you’ll have to walk the plank. I don’t think you will get a special dispensation from her for extra water, she is no fan of yours, she tried to stop you fulfilling your dream. As I see it you will be entitled to 6 months of shower water; that is a 9 hour shower. Not only will you be the youngest person to sail around the world non-stop and unassisted, you may get the record for the longest shower taken during Captain Bligh’s watch.
Ay me harty, don’t tell the Cap’in I put you up to it, we’ll both walk the plank.

Proverbs 13:12
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Good morning, Jesse! Sounds like you experienced a longing fulfilled when you spotted that point of land, and it was indeed a tree of life for you! A great lesson for me today as I will no doubt receive or experience or accomplish some small thing for which I have been longing, and I will try to be a million times grateful as you describe.

Yes, you must be extremely proud and you deserve it. I must say watching the fly-over video I surely sensed the pride of your mum and dad and the love and care they have for you. Your heavenly father cares for you perfectly, and I encourage you to seek His presence and comfort even as your mum and dad had to depart their visit to return home. He has been known about you and this journey since before you were formed, and He has watched over you from above since your departure, and will be faithful in caring for you and keeping you. Rely on Him and turn to Him.

Today I will pray for your rest and good progress. I will also pray for safe travel for your parents as they return home. I am also praying prayers of thanksgiving for your journey to date.

Hello Jesse,

simply awe inspiring !

Jessica,

I won a competition on the radio this morning, recognising your voice as the "voice from the vault" - it was an excerpt from your description of rounding Cape Horn - just a wow and giggle.

Even though it was 5:30 in the morning I knew it was you straight away, having been a loyal follower of your blogs and videos since you left us (which my husband finds quite amusing for some reason).

So, any time you want to watch the videos I have won because of you, just let me know.

Wishing you safe passage til you are back here in Aus.

Terrific video of your Mum and Dad flying over you. Nice that the clouds opened up a bit so they could get a good shot of you and EPL.
Let's hope the rest of the journey goes as successful as this half. What a story you will have to tell when you get back into Sydney Harbour. Clint was kind enough to put the url on from the Herald/Sun. It will be something to remember always. As always smooth, safe sailing. Best wishes.

Hey Jess,

WOW!!! You really are an amazing woman. I think I've said that before (more than once).
Are you the youngest person to sail single handed around Cape Horne? Are you setting records already. You are certainly the most followed person to sail around the world.

What an amazing milestone, what can be achieved if you believe in yourself and in what you are doing. What an incredible lesson to us all. Jess, you continue to inspire an incredible number of people and I imagine the movies they make about you will inspire even more.

I thank God for your safe passage around the Cape and continue to pray that He will protect you over this next leg of your quest.

Hello Jessica!
Well your blog has set another record for comments on a single post! This one is well on it's way! I watched your videos again today, and they are just amazing! When you are talking to us from inside the boat looking out the window and descibing what was out there, it reminded me of the same thing happening in a scene in the Apollo 13 movie. Thanks for sharing that special moment and letting us be a part of it! I can't thank you and your family enough for allowing us to watch the reunification fly over. Such a personal and emotional moment that you let your followers be a part of! I must admit I was crying along with Mum and Dad! This adventure of yours is a wonderful thing, and we are SO blessed to be a part of it! I just can't say thank you enough to your family and team. Excellent achievement! Sail on!

Hi! Jesse,
This is my first post. I am a 73 year old man who believed in you from the beginning.
I have been following your adventure since before you left Sydney. I never doubted that you could be successful at circumnavigating solo around the world. Many people were incredulous and criticizing because they viewed you as a young girl. I have always considered you a young woman for you have shown a maturity that you don't often find in people your age - you are a special one-of-a-kind young woman. I am sure your parents are extremely proud of you – I know I would be if you were my daughter. When I first heard you speaking I knew you had what it takes to launch such a historic adventure. The world took you in their arms and in their hearts and has supported you since your departure October 18, 2009 from Sydney. I am amazed by your energy, focus of purpose and your mental capacities and endurance - not to mention culinary and mechanical abilities. I very much enjoy the way you express yourself and the vivid descriptions of your adventurous voyage. Keep it up!
In this age when young people are doing all sorts of crazy, useless things you have come along to remind the world that there are still some young people who take life seriously and do things to better themselves and become useful citizens of society. You are an inspiration and a role model to many people both young and old; a “gutsy young lady” as Dilip Donde said. This journey will show you many things that will be useful to you and also the world. Enjoy and embrace them for they will be with you for the rest of your life!
Congratulations on conquering the most dangerous part of your adventure The Horn. Thanks for all the great pictures you have posted.
Keep safe and God bless you throughout the rest of your journey when you have safely returned to Sydney.

In response to Anonymous' blog dated: January 17, 2:45 AM) that started out with: "What is wrong with the media in the USA?"

I, too, am disappointed, as I even sent them all the information I thought they needed to cover it, and in plenty of time to "fit it in" or get the "details" corroborated. I certainly can understand, now, with the Haiti disaster, that they need to give it so much coverage, I really do. But, not covering Jessica, shame on them!

Below is the letter I wrote:

January 11, 2010

To Who it May Concern:

Re: 16-year old Jessica Watson, from Australia, sailing around the world solo, non-stop, and un-assisted.

Is anybody going to cover this story???

I just want to ask why your network has not covered the amazing Jessica Watson, a 16-year old, Aussie, who is circumnavigating the globe? Her voyage is being done solo, non-stop, and unassisted (no support boat following near by). She left Sydney Australia on October 18, 2009, on her “Ella’s Pink Lady”. It is expected that it will take to 7 to 8 months to complete her journey (depending on the winds and weather). Jessica has already travelled over 9,000 nautical miles of her 23,000 nautical mile trip.

Since Jessica is not putting in at any port, all the supplies she will need had to be aboard before she left the harbour at Mooloolaba.
As I said, she has no support boat following her and can’t have any physical contact or supplies delivered to her during her trip.

I really feel she deserves mention, if not an ongoing update of her progress, for us, and to bring her incredible adventure to the attention of the public so they too can be aware of this awesome young lady and, as her blog family of well wishers are doing, so they can follow, and encourage, her, too.

Her blog family is growing daily, and they are from all around the world. Most from Australia, of course, and New Zealand, but, also from Germany, the U.K., Sweden, Spain, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland, Turkey, Fiji, Latvia, Quebec, South America, India, Romania, Virgin Islands, Norway, Thailand, Austria, Tasmania, Netherlands, Iceland, Switzerland, Malta, and, of course, many of us from the United States have been following her progress too!

Jessica is approaching Cape Horn (approximately 250 nm away), but we don’t know the exact day. They expect it might be by Wednesday the 13th), but it all depends on the winds and the seas.

She has encountered winds of up to 44 knots and 5 meter seas, and has gone through days of dense, all encompassing, fog, and not enough wind to fill her sails. Her cabin heater has not been working and she has had to endure temperatures in the cabin of 4 degrees Celsius.

Passage Weather showed a major storm west of her that will be pushing through and may catch up with her because she had been becalmed for close to 3 days.

There is another sailor who is also approaching Cape Horn, but he is larger, faster, sailboat. He is an Indian Navel Officer; I believe his name is Dilip Donde. For the last 1,000 nm, or so, it was expected that he would easily have overtaken Jessica by now, and round Cape Horn before her. I’m not sure where he is presently. I understand that since he left home he has put in at a number of ports, staying at some for several weeks to rest, re-stock, and repair, when necessary. But I don’t think he had any plans to stop before rounding the horn. (Continued in my following blog . . . more . . . )

Carol Florida U.S.A. said...

(Continued from my previous blog. . . Letter to Media)

Young Jessica’s accomplishment has been certainly more courageous, and her entire voyage more difficult; more tiring both physically and mentally, requiring a calm outlook, and patience especially when facing glitches with amazing maturity. She has been the sole, onboard, trouble-shooter, handling all problems calmly and competently . . . except, for that problem heater which just won’t co-operate. She’s remaining bundled up, with many layers, and with gloves in an attempt to stay warm and dry.

I have not seen, or heard, that this story has been covered on our news shows, but it would be so nice if all of “us”, here in the U.S., could be united in support of her, and send her prayers and encouragement! She has brought so very many people (from different countries and cultures) together and we’re all sharing this common interest, and vicariously, “accompanying” her on her voyage, and, we’re having so much fun that we want to share it with everyone! And, hopefully, we’ll all be thinking of her with positive thoughts about her courageous attempt!

Since we, in the U.S., are going through so much discord, in so many areas, it would be wonderful, and so refreshing, if we could all be united in something worthwhile, instead of taking this side or that side in every issue; something to bring us together, instead of tearing us apart. We need heroes right now, and this awesome, Jessica Watson, certainly fills the bill. Let’s all rally around this young lady who is a wonderful role model for our young people too! So, how about letting them know about her, and helping all of us keep track of her progress!

Thank you for your time. I hope that you will at least acknowledge the receipt of this request, even if there is some really good reason why you have not covered this story, or do not plan to cover it.

It is important that no-one attempt to approach Jessica, though, by boat or by plane, because that would disqualify her!!! There would be other ways to interview her, or show coverage (video clips) from your Aussie counterparts.

Incidentally, you can obtain more details by going to her website:

jessicawatson.com.au

Thanks, again!

(and then, I enclosed my e-mail address, in case they needed more information)

I must say, though, that I even had sent an e-mail to Queen Elizabeth's press office (as I mentioned I was going to do in one of my earlier posts) with similar information suggesting they have the Queen contact Jessica with her good wishes and encouragement for her accomplishments. This was even before I sent the one to our US Media, but haven't heard that Jessica has been contacted by them . . . not even by her staff!!!?? I don't understand it, but guess WE all realize the enormity of Jesse's voyage, even if they can't (YET) fully appreciate it!!!

Don't worry, Jesse, they'll be “at your door” begging for an interview after you return!!!

Carol Florida U.S.A.

Hi Jesse,

The video clip of your parents in the airplane peering down at you and Ella's Pink Lady
was very endearing. The episode brought to mind some of your early blogs, for example:

June 6, 2009
"Dad, Bruce and Rod are practically an unstoppable force as they plot the best protection from the weather, strength and safety. I restrain from constantly pointing out that this is a yacht rather than a tank because I know how much I’ll appreciate having a boat that will look after me in the Southern Ocean."

June 12, 2009, "he’s determined to turn the boat into a battle ship"

and August 16, 2009
"Mum’s been making the most of me being home for awhile, by feeding me all kinds of long life food experiments for me to taste test. Not to be fussy or ungrateful but some of its becoming a little too creative!"

Now, it's risky to suggest music that matches that moment up in the airplane (music
is such a personal thing), but this link to BeeGees (perhaps your parents remember them) just might do it. It is fitting that the Gibb brothers grew up in Australia.

Message to Jesse!

Hoping you're getting a view of the beautiful moon tonight! It looks like a big, white, smile in the night sky, because it's just a crescent and only the bottom curve is illuminated! It's spectacular, and, I know that it's smiling on you!!! And, with Jupiter positioned nearby like a bright spotlight . . . even the sky is thrilled with your recent accomplishment!!!

I hope you can see this, Jesse, but maybe it's just visible like this in our Northern Hemisphere. It does make us feel closer to know that, when visible, we can all see the same beautiful orb in each of its phases. You're probably not getting much reflection on the ocean surface tonight though since it's just a crescent.

Of course, you're most likely getting the full treatment of starry, starry, night!!!! I sure hope that it's not overcast; that would be a crying shame!! Enjoy!!!!

Love ya!!

Hi Jessica
The “TETHER TANGO” !!! – You might start a new dance craze with this one. Well - I suppose it sounds more exciting than “Watson’s Waltz” or “Jess’s Spider Walk”.

We want a demonstration when you arrive back in Sydney – so we will arrange for two or three helicopters to buzz you as you approach the Heads to provide the visual motivation and the music, or at least a suitable rhythmic pulse. And no cheating, you must remain tethered until you cross the line inside the Heads.

Spectators from your blog family will join in. How? By taking along a ‘tether’ – approx 1-1.5 metre length of rope which must be tied to the wearers belt at one end and to a suitable fixed object such as a park bench, fence post, or small tree. The steps are easy. When the helicopters begin to sing follow their path by holding your head still and only rotating your body to keep the choppers in your sight. You will pick it up very quickly. If you try this on a spectator boat try not to draw attention to yourself by falling overboard.

Another thought. You are now in Atlantic Albatross territory. You may still find some of them speak Espinalbatross, but as you get further eastward you are likely to find they speak a sort of Dutch dialect or English with a South African accent. I hope you don’t confuse them.

That’s enough frivolity. When I woke this morning and looked out over the bay (Port Phillip) the weather appeared generally overcast, and then I spotted a marvelous looking rainbow form ahead of a rain squall on its way to give us a drenching. I then wondered whether you had seen any rainbows at sea. I don’t recall you mentioning sighting any. They often look wonderful when set against a dark squally grey sky – and I know you have had plenty of those days. If you haven’t seen one I hope you do at some time during your voyage. I hope its getting warmer for you as you head north-east. My guess is you will soon leave the shallow waters of the South American Continental Shelf and begin your passage over the deeps of the Southern Atlantic – with longer swells and not as much mountain climbing when conditions are good. I know you will enjoy whatever you get.

Hi Jessica,
I imagine that things are coming back to normal for you now, that was a lot of excitement in a few days. How’s the adrenaline doing, is it completely drained??? But I’m sure it was worth it, what a fantastic part of your journey to be able to see and talk to your Mum and Dad. I hope they had a safe flight back home, but I think your Dad would rather be on the sea sailing than in the air flying. Yes??

According to ‘The Voyage’ it looks like you’re sailing comfortably past The Falkland Islands. So now it’s just a matter of approximately 3800nm’s to So. Africa. I pray for smooth sailing for those 3800nm’s. Take a break, sit back and relax, enjoy the warm fresh air and being where you are and doing what you love the most……… Go Fish!!!!!
There were so many excellent posts in the last 1500 to 1600 posts that to mention them all would be difficult. But they gave praise and encouragement to Jessica, and made for very enjoyable reading. What a great bunch of people on this blog, and what a great blogmaster.
We’ve had quite an influx of new posters, I hope they’ll stay and continue to support Jessica, I say welcome to all.

For Room 401: ‘Coming around Cape Horn’ was great, keep up the good work.

Looking forward to your next post, when you get the time.
Take good care of yourself Jessica, and all them scallywags.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.

I wonder if Jesse will be greeted by a fleet coming out of Stanley in the Falklands considering how close she is sailing to the island. Hope the RAAF fly past goes ahead.

Not sure what is going on with the Blog, but if your post does not show, check past blogs. I noticed that even after this blog started, posts were still appearing on the old one. I have checked 3 times since Cape Horn and the posts totaled 1128, 1139 & now 1147.

A lot of my posts are missing (some but not all can be blamed on the site crashing) which suggests Jesse's "family" could be even bigger if other peoples are being "lost" as well.

To AlbacoreLiaFail yes I agree, Jesse has created a catch phrase - "Tangled in my Tethers!" eg.

"I'm so excited I'm getting tangled in my tethers" or
"I'm so busy I'm getting tangled in my tethers" or
If someone is a little annoying "don't get tangled in your tethers!" Hee, hee, the possibilities are endless!

All is well today I hope Jesse, settled back into nice routine. What does the South Atlantic water look like, much the same I reckon. I bet you thought that Pacfic water would never end, big ocean that Pacfic.
Will you have a rest near the Falkland Island, but knowing you, you are already for the next challenge, can't wait for this one to unfold.
To Carol of Florida, much the same over here in Western Australia, if the person is not Western Australian, they don't care, nothing in the news papers or in the TV news over the weekend.
But when she sails into Sydney Harbour they will all jump on the bandwagon.
So Jesse keep having fun and KEEP SAFE.

I started looking at your Blog because my medical school son is so excited about your trip and you have been keeping him from studying medicine :-) Just kidding though he did admit once spending too much time looking at your progress.

Now our whole family from Colorado and California, USA is watching your very exciting adventures. I was very moved by the recent news video of you rounding the Cape.

Be of good cheer and keep up the good work - we are all very proud of you!

Hi Jesse just veer right a bit and home is right ahead.

Fantastic pics. Did anyone else notice how much Jesse looks like her mum. She must be a fabulous person too.

To Carol Florida U.S.A Don't be embarrassed by your media's lack of coverage, we in Aus are a long way away, BUT our own Queensland State premier and our National Prime Minister haven't acknowledged Jesse's achievement.

You can bet your bottom dollar that when our girl sails through Sydney heads and the camera crews are out their minders will force a path for them right to the front and they will be grinning like it was all their idea.

Rest up Jesse then take on the next big one, we are all behind you 110%

Hi Jesse,

This is such fantastic news! Bravo to your skill, tenacity, positive attitude, humor, and beautiful spirit. I am sure you are both relieved and overjoyed at reaching this important milestone. Your posts are so descriptive that it feels as though I am a passenger, right there with you, rather than continents away, I, too, had tears in my eyes as I read your last one.

Wishing you a restful night and winds just strong enough to keep you moving rather than becalmed....but most importantly, not so severe that your safety is at stake.

Hiya international blogger family who are upset by the lack of coverage of Jesse, don’t worry. Here is a tongue in cheek look at some questions people have asked about Australia before touring our beautiful country. The answers are hilarious...!!

Maybe the media folk you are talking about belong to this lot.
Enjoy…!!

Question: Does it ever get windy in Australia ? I have never seen it rain on TV, how do the plants grow? (UK).
Answer: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

Well done to the Cape - brilliant sailing, craft management, personal endurance and navigation skills. Your class mates and friends should be extremely proud. As an adventurer (not a sailor) I was climbing mountains, caving, navigating, bushwalking, and even rescuing people off mountains at your age. Of course there is some risk to these adventures, but what in life is not a little risky. Risk management is the key.
To Mr and Mrs Watson, congratulations on your strong support for your daughter - we should all support our children in their endeavours and other parents could take note.

Hi Jessica,
Hope you’re having a good sail, and you’re not getting ’tangled in your tethers’. I just had to throw that one in, it’s been decided that you have created a catch phrase, ‘tangled in your tethers’ can be used to cover various situations, good or annoying, I thought it was a good idea. LOL…..
Not much happening up here in WV, the snow has pretty much melted and now it started raining, melting the snow that is still here, so the flood warnings are being published. Always something.

For Danielle: (01-19-10) Happy 10th Birthday Darling, you picked a winner when you decided to follow Jessica. Hope you’re enjoying watching Jessica’s travels. Keep up the good work and write to her, when you get a chance.
For Carol Florida U.S.A.: Enjoyed your post very much, very true.

Well Jessica, I imagine you’re well past the Falklands by now, and hopefully under full sail. Take good care of all and sail true and safe.
Sure would love to hear from you, when you get a chance, miss ya!!!!

Good morning Jesse

Well you had a wonderful fly over by your parents and you knew they were coming. Yesterday we, my wife and I had an unexpected low flyover from an F16 fighter jet!!!! Talk about a fright...we are in the middle of the Breeza plains...no trees just acres and acres of crops when whoosh over comes the jet at no more than a couple of hundred metres. Freddie( the car) was blown around and we freaked out. It took a couple of coffees at the nearest servo to recover!!!The locals said they were on manouvers. So are you resting? I hope so and are you navigating your route to Africa? Hope the weather is reasonable. From what I can make out things don't look that good for you. Cold in eastern AUS yesterday and today.

Hi Jessica

It will be natural for you to feel moments (or hours) of longing for loved ones or homesickness or just be a bit down (like you felt after the equator – your first milestone) so I thought I would share this very interesting extract from a sailor who solo sailed from Panama to Australia over 60 years ago:

“Gradually I nibbled away at the distance. Sometimes I grew unfathomably discouraged. Hard, wet ropes: inclement, capricious weather; the small wearisome reef points – but most of all the desire to go faster made me gloomy. And when gloom smote me hard and the sea miles wore me down, I went below, and with my dainty crew (he had two cats aboard!) in my lap found solace reading from the worn letters I had received from Mary (his wife) – in your case your beloved family and all your dear bloggers comments - during our long separation. They chased the gloom and the wornness, and inspired me to patience.”

It will soon pass - Take care and …

… GO GIRL

For Amazedbyou:

G’day. (I sure like saying that) You were wondering what Jess means when she says that the waves stand up a little. I won’t try to be too technical since I’m not qualified to be too technical. The long ocean swells are generally caused by weather conditions that are possibly thousands of miles away. When those ocean swells reach a stretch of water like Drakes Passage, the narrowness and shallowness of Drakes Passage can cause them become steeper, taller and closer together. They kind of get squeezed together. The wind and current will cause choppy waves or seas on top of those rolling swells. If you have currents moving in the opposite direction than the wind, it can cause those choppy wind waves to “stand up” even more or possibly break. At the mouth of a harbor, for instance, when you have the force of a strong ebb tide or possibly the current of a river meeting the ocean swells, waves can really stand up and at times be quite dangerous. That’s a very un-scientific explanation, but I hope that helps a bit.

And I had a good laugh over your questions and answers that people have about Australia, especially this one.

Q: Will I be able to see kangaroos in the street?
A: Depends how much you’ve been drinking.

I think I saw some kangaroos in my neighborhood this past weekend. LOL

Looks like you've been making good progress over the past few days. Easy now - just throw a right hand turn and head to Australia! lol! Had a lengthy debate yesterday with my family about why people do what you do. Apart from the obvious reply - a la George Mallory the monutaineer who might have reached Everest peak in 1924 - "Because it's there", I guess there are really any number of answers; as many probably as there are people who try to do 'impossible' things. I got also to thinking about your parents - and what a wonderful gift to have such belief and trust in you. You are such an inspiration (that word - again!), and so are they. Back to my own family - I think I managed to get some message across that was a bit more than 'becuase it's there'. The fact that 10000kms from where you are, conversations like this are happening - caused by you - is not an insignificant thing. So, on top of all your achievements - met and still to come - take a bow for reminding us that the horizons we see are the ones we set ourselves. Keep sailing in safety to yours.

I am so happy that you finally made it through to the cape and reached such an important milestone in your journey. I cannot believe how large your fan base has grown to. In the beginning it was much smaller and now it is three times larger. That is wonderful and it is so wonderful that the trip is going so well. Thank you for allowing me and all o us to be with you in this most incredible adventure. Milestones are great, but now the journey lies ahead. Keep your focus on your next goal nnd in what the ultimate outcome will be. You are a pioneer, an icon of will and power. As I continue on my journey through unknown waters of my own, I know that with each day, with each milestone, I am getting stronger everyday. I, too, am in the midst of places untread before for me. I so appreciate being alive and forging through to the next step. You're an inspiration for us all. Keep your joy, your peace, your strength and enthusiasm. Namaste

Hi Jessica,
I thought it was going to get warmer for you once you started North after the Falklands, but someone mentioned that it was cold, and I wondered about ‘heather’. Any luck with her yet??
Are the seas calm enough that it will allow you to do any preventive maintenance yet? Or are you way ahead of me. LOL…..
I really enjoyed the friendly chat between yourself and your Mum. Sounded like you have a good relationship together. Like I’ve said before, each time I re-read or watch a video a second or third time, I notice something new and enjoyable.

gsimmons: Sorry to hear about the boater, did they ever find him/her?? Hope the foot heals OK. Sounds like some very narrow minded people. It’s to bad that you have to get some flak over your choice of entertainment. Bad mentality!!!!
Amazedbyou: Absolutely hilarious, I laughed myself simple. Unbelievable, thank you. That definitely went into the ‘Jokes’ file. LOL……
SaltyDog: nice explanation on the stand up waves. Yeah, I liked the one on the kangaroos in the street too. LOL………
Samurai, Samurai wherefore art thou, Samurai??????

Sorry it didn’t get warmer for you (I was trying) maybe pretty soon. Yes??
Take good care of yourself, eat, drink and be merry, and then try to sail straight. LOL…..
So proud of you Missy, keep up the good work. Chin up!!!!!!
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.
