Cold!

The good news is that so far the wind hasn't been nearly as strong as expected. But on the down side, it sure has been and still is very cold!

The cabin temp has been sitting on 4 degrees Celsius and the wind chill outside is really quite something. Handling wet lines on deck is just downright painful, but mostly I'm staying toasty warm in all my layers. But without any help from the heater which seems to have picked this as a good time to blast cold air rather than hot! I think the problem is fixable but that's going to have to wait till things are a little quieter.

I've also got a little problem with a block on the main sheet (the line that controls the mainsail). Again it's not a biggy, but for now I've got the mainsail down and seeing as there's still plenty of wind, Ella's Pink Lady is making good ground with just the headsail up.

So as I'm writing this, the wind is sitting at about 30knots and it's just become daylight again to reveal an angry, grey ocean. Nothing too serious, but I'm still a bit on edge, as there's more wind expected again today and the odd big wave is knocking us around a bit.

With everything in order there's not really much for me to do for now, so in between frequent glances at the instruments and out the companionway I've been reading, watching the occasional DVD and working my way through all the messages and comments from you guys.

I hope I don't sound like a broken record, but once again thanks so much for all the messages of support. Whenever I sit down to down to read them, I normally laugh and smile the whole way through!

Oh, and I just love the way you guys all keep yourselves entertained chatting in my absence!

Jesse

Howdy Jesse! Looks like you're ticking away another time zone...also getting a bit of what the Southern Ocean has to offer. I just came back from a walk in a biting cold wind and you're right, it does hurt!
Keeping an eye on P/W and hoping you are making excellent progress and the heater maybe decided to cooperate. Do you have special food bags for this part of the journey or do they have the same variety? We are in awe of you daily and send our best wishes, love and prayers!

Dear Jessie,

Hi this is Dilip's friend from India.

Hope i can call u Jessie by now...I feel comfortable calling you that and already feel you are close to me because you are close to Dilip right now!!

Sorry to hear about the heater probelm and the block..though you are going through tough times I am sure you are capable of handling it...(I am sure you are expecting some challenges the cape horn is throwing at you).

Hope you can keep in touch with Dilip. about the weather forecast,or just to encourage each other...I think that will keep you both warm... feeling that you are not alone in the scary unkind seas.

We cannot do much being on the land but pray for both of you. but you both are experiencing the actual conditions so warm words of encouragement will help both of you to keep yourself warm and pass through this tough time.

Not sure whether Dilip has any heater?? I know he is feeling cold and misarable right now...but in his own words and what he believes when the going gets tough is ....."this too shall pass"

And Jessie it certainly will for both of you!!

Take care

With lots of love and warm wishes from all of us who are watching Dilip and YOu from India.

Dear Jess,

I have not blogged you for some while due to a mid to end life crisis.
It is 2.30 in the morning where I live in HYDEN, Western Australia and I could not sleep. I came down stairs and somehow all foggy eyed and brainwave-less, turned the computer on and there you were- forgiving me for not writing in a long time.

I would like to write a very short poem for you, however since Muhammad Ali has the record for the shortest Poem in the english language:
"Me, We", i am forced to attempt to give you second best......Get ready, attach your safety harness and prepare for some terse verse:

"In Jess, We're blessed"

Johnny Cash sings a line in one of his songs:
"If you don't take a chance, the angels wont dance"
With what you are chancing (doing), i think there must be a myriad of angels dancing in the realms of glory. Go Aussie Go

It seems not to be easy to sail around the world. Someone here mentioned the alone sailor
Bernt Lüchtenborg (http://www.sail2horizons.com/) from Germany (age 56). His blog is in German only but in short he had to abandon his boat outside New Zealand because the rudder was damaged by a floating object on 23 November. A towboat could find the boat and tow it to New Zealand, where it was repaired. He got going again and his position today is 50°S, 139°W, about 2700 nm from Cape Horn, arrving around 22 January.

And there is Minoru Saito from Japan (http://saito8.blogspot.com/) He is in Punta Arenas near Cape Horn to repair several items on his ship. He will continue on his westward journey within a few days.

Dilip Donde from India
(http://sagarparikrama.blogspot.com/) is known by us and have his problems, which he will repair in Stanley, Falklands, but he is going for now.

Abby Sunderland from the US (
http://soloround.blogspot.com/) departs very soon and she worried about her malfunctioning diesel heater, after reading Jessica’s blog today.

It is only Jessica who is not stopping for repair, she does it herself while sailing!

The reason there are many sailors around Cape Horn now is that it should be passed during summer if at all.

Go Jessica, success in life is rarely achieved the easy way. It takes a dream, courage, setbacks, lessons learned, frustration and jubilation before any meaningful goal will be achieved. Son long as you continue to believe in yourself and tap into all the support you have you will succeed. Young people such as yourself are an inspiration to others to follow their dreams and give it go. Some with succeed wildly, others only a little bit but none will die wondering. Hi Jessica

I used to sail in the Juan de Fuca Straight between Vancouver island and Washington State, and thought water temps of 8 degrees and outside temps of 5 was miserable, so I can imagine how you are feeling.
However, these were the times when you do a little soul searching, and this always brightened me up!

You are so positive about all the hardships, and this gives you lots of strength.

Well done mate!

It is so hot here in NSW today, that I could almost swap locations with you!

From my inexperienced eye looking at passageweather.com, it looks like you're going to have pretty decent weather... good for the repairs you need to do. I've been hoping for clear and calm as you pass the cape so you can see it and really be able to enjoy being there...it's such an accomplishment! There's still plenty of ocean and time ahead for the wilder experiences.
And if you get back to Sydney feeling like it wasn't challenging enough for you, then you can always do it again in the southern winter!!

Nasty Storm Forecast

If you go to www.passageweather.com and look at the South Pacific, and advance the forecast to Tuesday to midnight (00 UTC) Tuesday January 12, and then click the next button twice, you'll see a storm developing in 12-hour increments.

At its worst, winds are forecast for 55 knots, which is nasty stuff. You can also see that the storm has a nearly hurricane like structure to it.

The good news is that it only lasts 24 hours. (Though that would be a miserable day and night to spend in the Southern Ocean). The even better news is that it is possible that Jessica (depending on her longitude) will be mostly east of it (though depending on her latitude she may be hit by 35-knot headwinds as air from Cape Horn is sucked into this roatating system.

Scroll down to the third window, showing projected wave height, and advance the date to January 12 and you'll see forecast for 30-foot waves (look up at a 3-story building and use that as a yardstick).

If you haven't gone to www.passageweather.com (or any other similar weather site) I'd highly recommend it, as it is quite interesting to see these weather patterns developing.

Note: This forecast is 7 days into the future, so it is possible that the projected storm will never materialize. Or, on the otherhand, it could worsen.

For weather watchers and those interested in what Jessica is potentially facing out there, a site like this is fascinating.

Hi Jess,

Here Frans from the Netherlands, a sailing nation back to the early days of sailing. I think its amazing what you are doing, sailed myself on a 20 crew ship from Lisbon Portugal to Amsterdam in 1995. Was my most beautiful vacation ever.
I just want to point out to you that at this moment a sailing vessel from the Netherlands (the Stad Amsterdam, a three mast Clipper) is sailing the route that Charles Darwin sailed on board of the Beagle in 1832. On board are scientists and all kind of interesting people as for instance Sarah Darwin. The ship started in Europe and stopped in Brazil and Argentina then went through Patagonia and went up to the Galapagos islands. At this moment they are heading towards Tahiti. Ofcourse there is a website: http://beagle.vpro.nl/#/
A lot of information is in Dutch but when you look under "Beagle Crew" and search for Sarah Darwin on page 10, or Redmond O'hanlon on page 9 or Anthony Smith on page 1, there is enough to read in English. Most of the time a live webcam can be watched. I thought it might be fun for you to visit every now and then.
Well, take care and success rounding Cape Horn. Did you know that Cape Horn is named after the town Hoorn in The Netherlands?

I liked the song when I first heard it. Then this morning as the alarm went off the song was on and I really heard it. Its by Toby Mac and called City On Our Knees..listen to the words...
"If you gotta start somewhere..why not here?..If you gotta start sometime why not now?..If we gotta start some where I say here..If we gotta start sometime I say now..Through the fog..there is hope in the distance..from Cathedrals to third world missions..Love will fall to earth like a crashing wave. ...Tonights the night! For the sinners and the saints..Two worlds collide in a beautiful display..Its' all love tonight when you step across the line..We can sail across the sea..to a city with one King..a city on our knees...We are one choice from forever..tonight couldn't last forever..we are one choice from together..You and me! You and me!..."

And the music is just as cool...Sounds like a journey you have been describing to us since you left Sydney..how about that..you got your own theme song!!

All my good wishes are with you this next couple of weeks, stay brave and true.

Hi Jessica,
Well I guess I'll start off like everyone else and ask you, did you get the heater working yet?? That is a very important question!!! I sure hope you did, my fingers get cold just thinking about it. It's called sympathy pain, better I have yours than you have mine. LOL.....
I hope everything else is going well for you, I figure it is since the Shore Crew hasn’t said anything different.
Is that block down low or do you have to go up the mast for it?? Just be careful working on it wherever it is.

For anonymous: January 6, 2010 4:35 AM
You don’t have to hide.
Oh, my goodness, you have caught me in a terrible mistake. The Latest News (Shore Crew) said “Jessica is currently sailing in 30 knot winds and a 4 metre swell as she battles another storm on her way to Cape Horn“, and I misread it and said she was traveling at 30kn. I have to commend you on your sharp eyes, since that is the first mistake I have made in almost 75 years, congratulations to you. Although I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight. Har, de har, har, har. Geez I feel better already.

For WorkerBev:
Being a cat person myself, I was moved to find out how you came across ‘Pudi’. Looks like you like to read their expressions also. But that was a very nice thing to do, you have a warm heart. I could probably spend all night swapping ‘cat stories’ with you. I have an Orange tabby, female (Leeloo) who is one (1) year old this month. I love to get into their personalities, and boy do they have them. Nice post, keep smiling.

For Susan in Oregon: Had a laugh at ‘shiver me timbers’ and you had a second thought. LOL…..
Hey RichieParis, Jessica is going to have to keep an eye on those scallywags. LOL….. When do we get to see chapter 4, Yes???

OK Jessica, keep up the good work, and I hope you get some heat in there real soon.
Take good care of yourself and all them scallywags, I know you will.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jessica
You never cease to amaze me. I admire your courage immensely. I love to sail myself, but am fairly new to it. Only having gotten serious about my goals for sailing last year. I sail at least once a week on Moreton Bay, but my real passion is ocean sailing. Don't laugh but I did my first ocean race the Brisbane to Keppel last August. I am hoping to do the offshore leg of Surfers to City in a couple of weeks, then the Brisbane to Mooloolaba the following week. Am still looking for a boat for the Brisbane to Gladstone at Easter.

I love reading your blogs. You are amazing how you can keep the boat so well maintained and fix things as needed. That has always been a bit of a fear factor for me, if I bought my own boat, who would be able to keep it maintained. So you inspire me to believe that maybe I could do it myself.

Am feeling for you at the moment with the cold, as it's so hot and humid here. Good thing you are well prepared with all your layers. I hope the current storm/strong winds so kind to you and Lady Ella.

I am so glad that dolphin kept you company the other week when things were a bit rocky.

Keep your spirits up, we are all here praying for you and thinking of you as we enjoy hearing about your journey.

I'm sure you'll come through this next part just fine. You are an amazing girl. Just go for it.

lots of love
Shar

Hi Jessica,

this is the first time for me to post a comment on your blog, although I've been following your voyage quite from the beginning - when you left Sydney harbour last year, your endeavour made headlines even in such a remote European place like Austria, the country I'm living in!
This message is just to say thank you to you for your courage, passion and strength which made your undertaking an achievement already here and now, no matter what the future will bring! An achievement for yourself clearly, in particular under these tough, challenging conditions you are going through at the moment (and which will turn better soon!); but also an achievement in terms of bringing together this well-wishing community of blog followers (and your family and friends at home, of course). It's just so incredible, unreal, strange, amazing, great but difficult to describe, to sit here at home at my computer in boring comfort, reading your news and start feeling as being dragged right into the southern ocean through this stream of communication from you, learning about albatrosses and dolphins, sunsets and gales and smiling about new year's wishes by satellite phone between circumnavigators near Cape Horn and about "heaters" just adding cold air and the jokes you can still make about this!
Thanks, Jessica, indeed, for this extraordinary experience! Wishing you well for today and this new year, take care and all the best from Vienna/Austria!

Spent some time going thru a lot of the video’s of you, and I’ve said it before how you amaze me with your control when you’re speaking. In some of your interviews, you’re so relaxed and at ease, and you are pretty funny with your facial expressions. (That’s meant to be complimentary). Nothing or no one fazes you. The only time I ever saw you change color was when you were being interviewed at EPL and you were under the boat and the reporter made a comment about your size. You let him know real quick like that you were not small, and that you were a normal sized girl. It was funny to see him back off. I still laugh every time I watch that video. LOL…..see

For Grant Fjermedal: I’m not as sharp on this as you are so please help me out here: If you go to South Pacific and then select Cape Horn/Drakes Passage, and follow your instructions, then you’ll see that the storm will be behind Jessica. Would the storm be traveling fast enough to catch up with Jessica??? When I first read your post I thought the storm was in front of her.

For Anonymous January 6, 2010 9:01 AM:
You’ll find that people like that are usually sitting on a pork-e-pine. LOL…..

For Peter Bush, Hyden:
You just proved that it doesn't take a lot of words to get a point across. Well done.

Well Jessica, the maid didn’t show up, so I’ll have to get my own dinner. I swear I’m gonna fire her. She’ll have to show up first. LOL…..

Take good care of yourself and all them scallywags, I know that you will.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.

Hey Jesse,
We have been following you since my partner and I met you @ Sydney Boat Show. My twin girls (who are 7 days younger than you), 16 yrs, and my youngest daughter,15 yrs, watch your progress with great interest. We, as a family, are building an 11m catamaran which hopefully will hit the water 2011! Then we will sail off into the wild blue yonder, but we won't be following your path lol.
I was worried when you told us "please don't worry about me" when you were going to be busy for a few days. I am hoping that you feel all the adopted-mums & dads sending you big hugs and lots of love. And how nagged do you feel? lol We all have an opinion or something to tell you to do or not to do! "Whatever!!" as my girls would say.
Thanks for letting us know how you are going. We do worry, sorry. Can't wait for you to be around that Cape and heading home to us, oh and your 'real mum & dad' lol.
Keep clipped on darlin'.
Love always, the Talbott-Elkio family NSW

You didn't expect the heater to work when you actually needed it, did you ? Hope you get it fixed soon, though. In the meantime, stay dry - being cold is okay, but being wet and cold is the pits.

Anyway, for what it's worth, it's cold everywhere now - in the northern hemisphere at any rate. But I hope it doesn't get too cold for you. And in the meantime I hope our warm wishes are enough to warm the cockles of your heart !

Hello Jessica sweetheart! Love you (as so many others say & do). You are an inspiration.
Love your funny little chuckle that just pops out so quickly in your videos. Very soft and hard to hear but so heart warming.
Love the timbre of your voice, that special little crackle that others have commented on.
Love your beautiful unique face and that smile that lights up the world!
Love your special, gentle nature, unassuming, modest and thoughtful of others; but SO brave and honest!

Its ok for me to write this way as I'm an old lady and a granny, but you ARE so VERY special, even if you weren't doing this great odessy. Mind you we wouldn't have got to know you if you weren't!
Anyway, just had to get that off my chest.

Now to some of your blogger friends who write to express their dissapointment when sometimes their blogs are not published. Are you sure you have entered them correctly? If you take too long to write up your comment, sometimes the verification word doesn't "take" Thats the only way I can describe it, but I have had it happen to me before. Keep an eye on the top of the comments page & it will say if your comments have posted successfully. If not go back (check that your typed comments are still visable) then go to the word verification place and you will find that the 'word' has changed. Just retype the new verification word and repost. Your comment should then go through! Good luck and keep trying.

Hi jesscica
Hope all is going as planned, should be going around the Horn Monday, give or take a day or so. Checking on PassageWeather, as another blogger has said, there is a large and nasty weather pattern due about Wednesday next week at the Horn, so hope you are safe and sound around the corner by then.
To Michael(Hezakiah)when you log into PassageWeather, click the orange box (South Atlantic), then click the blue box and then click Animate or keep clicking next, you will see the storm coming through next week. I hope this helps you out?
Would you sail in a northerly direction after rounding the horn to get up to some warmer temps and better weather, before heading towards South Africa?
So hope to hear from you soon, keep having fun and KEEP SAFE.
Cheers George Simmons

Hey Jess, who's going to get to Drake's Passage first, you or Dilip Donde?

Susan said...

Hi Jesse,
I keep hoping for calmer weather down there and looking at passageweather.com, and an anticipated rounding the horn on Jan 9th or 10th (I think that was what your mum said), it looks like you just might get it.

It looks to me that there's about 1000 mile stretch to get past around the horn... is that anywhere near right?

Grant F., looking at the 7th through the 12th, it looks calmer (keep in mind I'm new to this, so I could well not be seeing it right). Those big storms showing on passageweather.com look like they are behind and ahead of Jesse, and that she could sail through being between them. I hope I'm right.

It's hard for me to guess where you are Jess in relation to those storms that passageweather shows.
From my guesses though, it looks like Dilip might have been caught up in some pretty heavy weather, and the German sailor coming from behind him as well. My heart goes out to them, knowing they are both struggling.

To clarify my last post, lest there be any misunderstanding about what I said! I said something about if you end up not getting the seas you want, you can always go around again in the southern winter. That was said completely facetiously, as a joke, and I hope no one thought I was serious! I listened to an interview (I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the man who did the interview and posted the link just recently.. thanks!), and you mentioned looking forward to the southern seas. Yikes! I've never been drawn to sailing on the ocean, though have loved learning so much following your blog and being turned onto another world that so many people do love. The videos I see, the stories I've read of others who have done what you are now bravely doing, and my imagination completely satisfy my curiosity! Please know I said that kiddingly.
I can find the place in myself that would be more interested if I knew I wouldn't encounter those huge storms... but what are the chances?! So, I really appreciate being able to sail vicariously with you and your blog!

I've been happy to see you miss the center of those stronger storms (at least from my guesswork). It gives me more peace when I think you aren't in the midst of those red, redder, and purple areas. Orange is enough sea for my adopted daughter!!

There is a young woman named Jess
Who is putting her skills to the test
Sailing the seas, wild waves and cold breeze,
We love her and think she's the best! :)

Blessings, and gentle storms!

Thank you, Ruth, for John Masefield's "Sea Fever"--my father's favorite poem. I recited it at his burial in 1993 and it is part of my soul.

I had a look at Dilip's blog and it is amazing to see that so many people have commented on his blog, about your phone call to him on New Years. That was a lovely thing to do and I hope it also provided you with a sense of comfort knowing that you have someone 'close'.

Things look as though they are going to get a little rough for a bit, but just think as soon as you round the cape, you are sailing for home!

Take care, keep safe and keep warm. Don't let the crew steal all your blankets either!

I thought you might want to read a non sailing story. This morning the wife, you know her as she must be obeyed, Woke early and decided that a cup of tea would be nice and proceeded to make. In the depths of darkness in the kitchen awaiting was THE FLY TRAP! While the jug was taking its time to boil my wife yawned and streached knocking down the Fly trap and it attached with revenge. and the ability to strange her as she struggled and screamed like a rabbit in the jaws of death. I swear that I heard the echo returning from the blue mountains in the distance, miles to the North, some hundred miles to the north. The dogs from miles around sensed the danger and all at once erupted into melodious chorus in the Key of "E". The rooster fell from his purch and yoddled about the the chook yard. By this time the trap was exerting its hold and then grabbed her by the hair and she struggled and screamed more and the dogs barked in unison. I being fast asleep was woken to the noises of the attacker and the attacked and ran to her rescue. I turned the corner into the kitchen to fend off the attacker and then I saw.. :) and had to beat a retreat as the laughter fell over me and to be seen doing such would have landed me in deep water. My saying it's only the FLY TRAPdidn't help things . Which brings me to those famous words in a song "some days are diamonds and some days are stone" I think thats where the bloke got the words from! History repeating itself...Nuff said cause the water is deep...Cheers Stewart

Thank you for the last shore team's update!

Southern Ocean is challenging... 45 knots winds and 5 metres swell, not a kindergarten's game, huh, Captain Jesse? We are happy to see that you have such an opportunity to show the world (thinking of the very few possibly remaining naysayers) the true sailor you are. Two months ago, I remember thinking of the Cape Horn as something monstruous, some dragon that was waiting for you, and I couldn't help but being somewhat worried. Now you are facing him, with your faithful Ella's Pink Lady and your steel sparkling look, I have to confess I feel totally confident. The dragon will lose some teeth if he tries to block your way to the Atlantic. He'd better bend on your route and greet you as an Old Salt.

7°C in the cabin! Summer is back! When you sleep (if you can sleep), you must believe you're still in Malalooba!

Keep on facing the dragon and walking on him, you're the best, and we love you, Captain. In one week you will be floating on atlantic waters and tell us if there are more or less salty than the pacific ones. Cheers!!!

Dear Jessica,

Just read your Tuesday, 5th Jan 2010 report. You are an amazing young woman, Again, I admire your courage, coolness and positive outlook. Every time I think of you I say a prayer for your welfare and success. Hope you get that mainsheet working effectively again; you may have to choose your best time/weather to work on it. Alternatively, dont hesitate to request advice from expert sailor friends - they expect you to ask 'help' in difficulties. Saw a TV documentary very recently about a yatch rounding Cape Horn. Despite expecting the worst weather, the small crew enjoyed the smooth seas. Hope your voyage 'down and around' is smooth, safe and enjoyable. Your own confidence and skills are growing, you will be fine
Warm regards,

Thanks for your message. I guess like everyone we're just trying to be patient.
Yes it would be excellent to catch up with people in Sydney, it could be organised I'm sure.
As far as the flag construction... It's a simple design made out of parachute material yet still a work in progress... I will take you up on your offer & email you tomorrow.

@ The McGraths
I really needed to put my mind at calm for a while, to answer your so kind and generous offer. It let me so stunned, I can't find how much I could thank you for that!
This shouldn't be the place to hold a private chat, but I see no other one, so, shortly, I have been deeply moved, and my family too. Unfortunately, circumstances aren't on our side: children in school, an ailing business, and most of all my old Mum who needs my support and is afraid and stressed every time I leave Paris for more than a few days, even to go nearby in the country...
It will be one of my regrets not being able to watch Jessica's arrival in Sydney Harbour. What a moment! I hope it will be broadcasted live on TV, though this is doubtful in France. But I am sure there will be plenty of pictures and videos on the Net, and that many aussie bloggers will tell how they lived that day. And I shall be somehow there anyway, thanks to your flag.
And I hope that this brilliant young circumnavigator of our acquaintance, you know, her name is... well, that special girl from Buderim, will come some day to France. Sailing is very popular here, so she should have opportunities.
Whatever... you can send me an email through my Google Account, so we can chat without invading more of Miss Watson's -that's the name!- blog.

Hi Jessica! Beverly here in Tassie. No news from either side so I "assume" all is okay. But...that doesn't stop me from worrying - it's my privilege as a mother, it's inborn in us. I sure hope your heater problem is fixed. And the block problem. I had a fellow blogger email me on my email and explain what all is entailed in that. I really appreciated it as my knowledge about sailing and sailing terms is next to non-existent.

Michael(74): How could "anybody" on this earth get into you about anything? You are the most solid, sweetest, likeable fellow I've ever "met". I hope your "maid" showed up - isn't it awful when they go AWOL and you have to cook and clean for yourself. LOL

Helmut from Vienna, Austria: Welcome to the family. Thank you for your wonderful, heart-felt words to Jessica. I think you summed up everyone's feelings in your blog. And you are right - it is JESSICA, JESSICA, JESSICA, who has brought this international blog family together. Reminds me of the story of the Pied Piper, with Jess as the Piper and the rest of us following her to the ends of the earth.

Mary, Maine, USA: I was wondering where you were. I missed you, welcome back!

RichardLathrop, 4Jan, 11:56pm: Thanks so much for the info on degrees in latitude. That is another thing I was having trouble with, as with the weather maps. I'll be going for my boating license soon for a boat I just bought, do you think they will give me one? LOL

Cowboychincs (aka Grandpa Jerry) So. Car, USA (this is a day or two old, I've been too busy reading blogs to write)LOL. A very easy way to go from celcius to farhenhite was told to me by a nurse: this is approx. only, double the celcius number and add 30, that should give you close to the farhenhite amount. i.e., 4C x2= 8C+ 30 = 38F. That's how cold poor Jesse's cabin was. Brrrrr!

Evie in Bendigo: Thanks for the home-made ice cream recipe you gave Jess. I'm going to jump on it and try some. I'll let her know how it is. LOL

Jess, our blogs keep getting longer and longer cause we are making such good friends on "YOUR" website that we have to talk to them too. Hope you don't mind.

Remember, God is right there beside you, close enough to touch, just talk to Him when you get edgy and He will calm you down. And His Legions of Angels are all around you and EPL, keeping you safe and guiding you towards your goal.

Hi Jessica and thankyou Shore team for the latest update.
The conditions you have had the past 24 hrs sound tough with a steep swell and strong cold winds, I imagine you have had to concentrate full on ensuring you get over each speed bump safely. Well Done... you are amazing. Pleased to hear your cabin temp has crept up slightly . Have you been able to rest the past 24 hrs I would guess not. Not long now until you round the cape, then hopefully you can rest some... Hang in there Jess, you are certainly peeling those miles away. Im guessing you will wait until making the minor repairs to the main, how is she handling with just the headsail? have you had to use the drogue yet?

We are all thinking of you. You are going great !

fair winds for Jessica please!

Hi Jessica,

You Are Really ONE AMAZING YOUNG LADY !!! ..... I know I've said that a few times before (although maybe not in the Exact same Words), but you never fail to Amaze Me with your Guts & Determination, and Expertise: You always manage to FIX or at least IMPROVISE any Fault or Mishap or similar situation that crosses your path.

I told you not so long back that I was going to Give you a more Positive Estimation of when I think you'll arrive home in Sydney Harbour, when you reached Cape Horn. Well Jess, that time is almost here, so I'll have to start reviewing my calculations and I'll let you know when the time comes.

I imagine you find it hard to read every one of our comments, but I'm sure that with your enthusiasm, you wouldn't have much trouble getting through them all. Even though there are literally HUNDRED'S on each of your BLOG ENTRIES, most of them are Quite Short, so hat would make it a bit easier for you. I hope My Long Comments don't bore you. It's just that I have So much respect for you Jess, and I just Love writing to you. When you get home I would love to stay in Contact with you here on BLOGGER, and I hope we can follow each others BLOGS (that is when i actually write a BLOG Myself ... LOL ...). I've just been using BLOGGER to Follow Your Blog and Hannah's Blog, and one of the BLOGGERS called DEBS who follows You and Hannah too: DEBS also Keeps Guinea Pigs like Hannah. I don't know if you are aware of it, but DEBS two Guinea Pigs had 3 Baby girl Guinea pigs and she asked for Name suggestions on her Blog. I suggested that she Name them after YOU & ELLAS PINK LADY, and HANNAH. well jess, DEBS agreed with me and she called them JESSIE, ELLA, and HANNAH.

I left a message on HANNAH'S BLOG about it too; but I don't know if she has realised yet: so, if you are talking to Hannah, make sure you tell her the Good News.

Hiya Jesse

Seeing you are a bit busy a the minute, I thought I would update you with the news.

Tonight, you featured on our local news. "Dangerous Cape" was the caption, they said you were travelling along nicely tackling freezing cold weather and some high winds. Some great photos... all yours and your wonderful Dad and you at Syd. EPL also featured, looking very tickled pink.

Also in other news, Southern Ocean (no where near you)...Another Captain Watson !! Wow, of the Good Shepherd boat that had been following a Whaling vessel well...they had a bit of a bingle, run in, as you do. Maybe that is an understatement, it was a deadset punch up Jesse, ...but I don't want to worry you. You are ages away from them.

Anyway, I reckon the Australian Government should have thier own impounded whaling boat tomorrow.... Yipppeeee

It is rumoured that it will be a long swim home for the crew...(that's my rumour, spread it around if you like). Ok, impounding the boat was mine too....

You are up to date.

Anyway, I have exactly 521 comments to read, have read a couple, need to get my shot of 'blog family'. You know monitor the kids..take care of the peers...learn about sailing. Take care Jesse, stay warm. Cheers.

YOU CAN DO IT JESSICA WATSON !!! said...

Hi Jessica ... Me again, just something else I thought of since I posted my previous Comment.

With your LAYERS (as you call them); wear WOOLEN items Close to your skin. Put them on when you are kind of Warmish rather than if its really cold. Woolen Clothes actually RETAIN Your NATURAL Current Body Temperature; so sometimes if you are cold when you put them on, it takes longer to warm up. Wollen Gear will not make you hot if you use it properly.

Like I said, put it as close to your Skin as possible. it will keep your Body around the same temperature even if it gets colder.

If its Cold when you put the Woolen Gear on as one of the Bottom Layers, you can put on the Extra jackets and stuff and as you warm up, you can take off some of the outer Layers if you get too warm: But leave the Woolies On and you will Stay Warm.

Just read your shore team's update and, as of now, there are 521 posts since your last letter. Some of us can't resist writing 2-3 times in 24 hours. I'm hoping you can forgive us our connectivity. So glad to have read that you smile and laugh as you read through our posts.

I'm so happy that you're enjoying and embracing the elements of the southern ocean. To say that the cold wind feels different, that it's "heavier" is REALLY enlightening for me. Your observations are helping my kinesthetic self understand what you're experiencing as you head for the Cape.

GOOD ON YA, JESS!!! (if I may borrow an Aussie phrase...it just feels so good to say!)

There's SO much to say, but as I've read from "Ooc" so many times, I've got to get outta your way....

Hello Jesse and Cyberpod,
Some people say, "Your doing great for a sixteen year old". (I know they mean well), but, what is the underlying implication, that if a person were 25 or 35 or 45 or 55 or.. this would be something they could do?
I think not! You are a special breed of person to do this. As other cyberpod members have mentioned, you are a "BigHemi", "steel sparkling look", kind of sailor! (but modest, a wonderful attribute, please never go Hollywood on us!)

Go Jesse!

Hi Jessica,
Well, I’m glad to see that you’re getting a little heat in your little abode. Is it dry inside or is it damp? You never mentioned one way or the other.
You probably feel like you’re sailing on a sea of glass after that rough ride you just had. But you came through like a champ.

Yes Mary, from Maine, I would say that ‘fotterwa-ed’ ranked right up there with ‘gobsmacked’. After the trouble Dilip had with his boat I posted one to him and my verification word was ‘flymast’, ironic isn’t it. I’m enjoying your posts, serious, sensible and then you throw a curve and I laugh myself simple.

Bluefin from Buderim (sounds poetic) Mary from Maine, Richard Lathrop and myself had just discussed people like that not to long ago. It’s best to ignore them, maybe they’ll go away, or kill ‘em with kindness. I had to say something though. Couldn’t resist. Oh my. LOL…..

Gsimmons: Thanks for the P/W info, I haven’t tried it yet, but I understand.

For Amazedbyou: hold ctrl, hit F-- It works, box comes in on upper left side You can select a name and it will highlight all the posts that name is on (just the name). Ooohhhh you’re so smart. LOL….Thank you.

For Samurai: hereto forth art moi ??? Cracked me up lady, I laughed so hard I thought I’d bust a gut, and that was just a spur of the moment line?? You are quick. LOL…..here I go again.

Hey Jessica, congrats on the nine thousand (9000) nm’s, you’re just eating them miles up like they were chocolate.
Looks like you had a bit of a time on that last jaunt (not that you would say that) just a casual stroll to the cape, yes????
Hope everything is holding up, and how about you? No sweat, right. You are definitely amazing. I’m so proud of you.
Take good care of yourself and all them scallywags, I know that you will.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.
Michael (74) from Kingwood, WV

Good morning from here, Jesse, I hope the night went smoothly enough. We're down to about 10 degrees F here, in middle America, -12C, so there isn't much water to be found, outside at least.

Hey Jess,

I like the bloggers community following your track. Some are worried, some are philosophical, some amusing, some funny, worried , caring and the list goes on. Its really amazing for me to see how all of us from different parts of the world have come together to wish you and follow your progress...we are watching you all the time..

You will see that there are very few Indians writing and also following Dilip's progress...and that is because sailing is not a common sport in India...and not at all popular..there are very few people who are interested in his adventure except few of us who know him personally...no media coverage or Tv channels following his progress in India..its really sad..We in India are only fond of cricket and Football...

Its sad actually when we have such a great caost line....And that is why Dilip's efforts are so much special for us.

And now with your bloggers joining to comment on his blogs is really great otherwise he would have had very few comments. i am sure it helps to have so many people with you...So special thanks Jess to you... not only for giving him company in the southern ocean but extending your blogger family to him....

So thanks to all the bloggers who are cheering up Dilip.

Earlier i was checking only Dilip's blog now i cant stop myself from checking yours jess...in fact now i eagerly wait and get restless if i cant check your progress. I look forward to it and to read comments of the bloggers...

You keep going Jess....you are almost there and Cape horn is wating to see you both...

It will a great day when you will reach back home. Wave at us if you will pass from Indian ocean on your way back home. We will be waiting to see your progress till you reach home

Take care and Be Safe

You are in our prayers...

With lots of love

Hello on shore team,

thank you for the update. The best thing to find out is, that Jessica is doing fine!
Tough conditions, but she is, as expected up to the challenge!
Good on you Jessica!
Always thinking of you with strong supportive thoughts
Congratulations on the 9000 nm. What an achievement!
And only between 600 and 700 nm from the Cape,
wow, you are a champion!
Well, nature is supreme and her power is seen very well in these empty southern oceans!
I am always in awe to see the raw power of nature!
But you know, the same energy resides within us!
You are a match Jessica Watson!
7 degrees is still chilly, but with good clothing doable!
Glad, conditions have eased off a bit for now, maybe you can get this heater to work!

As always I am with you all the way,
keep well, enjoy your experience to the max and above all keep safe!

Does the message from your team mean, us blog family have to entertain ourselves once more??????

You said "the wind is heavier" in southern ocean. I experienced this in Hobart recently compared to winds in Brisbane ... can you, your team, or another follower give a scientific/understandable explanation? I know that the air may be denser due to difference in temperature - but I am looking for an explanation that I can then apply when sailing ...

I was looking at passage weather and things get stormy on 14th. Hopefully Jess will be already far away from that area.

Jess, I hope you that you are having the opportunity to repair your heater and the block of the mainsheet. Wao..I had to look for it on google as I wasnt sure of what it was.

Best wishes to you all.

We are so excited and very jealous. I wish I was doing what Jessica is. I wonder if she would be willing to teach me how to sail when she gets home

Standing at Cape Byron Lighthouse yesterday I looked across the Pacific to the northeast and imagined sailing to the equator, and then I turned toward the southwest and tried to comprehend your current location and weather conditions, great effort Jess. I hope the wind stays in your favour and keep warm.

Hi Jess,
I hope all is well and that it is not blowing too much and that the seas are enjoyable and challenging but not too challenging.

Isn't it funny, if we don't hear from you for two days your international family worries for you.

Stay safe

Hi Jessica, Traditionally, a sailor who had rounded the Horn was entitled to wear a gold loop earring — in the left ear, the one which had faced the Horn in a typical eastbound passage — and to dine with one foot on the table; a sailor who had also rounded the Cape of Good Hope could place both feet on the table. A sailor who had sailed around Cape Horn was also able to brag by showing off his tattoo of a full-rigged ship. What are you intentions? Best regards and smooth saling. Hello, All!

By my rudementary calculations, I'd say it's about 10:10am on Thurs, 1/7 in Sydney right now...(6:10pm on Wed, 1/6 in Maine).

The time at the bottom of my post says 9:07am so maybe the time diff right now is only 15 hours.

I wonder what's happenin' out there....

....dum dee dum.......(say with sing-songey voice)

Thinking of you, Jess....

Hiya Jesse, Hope all is well with you, please rest and do eat lots. I have been doing some of the reading of comments. Your support and well wishers is something to behold.

Samurai - Mother and Father!! OMG, so all those stick people I drew to help me work that out, were no help whatsoever.

McGraths - You are so very generous, you have a heart that warms us all.

gsimmons - I am with you about the northern hem family talking about freezing cold conditions. Wow, I have the air conditioner on...sweating. Love how they posted first in this blog. I haven’t even seen snow.

ToSeetheSea - "The sailors air bag" Yes please. The graphic of how to use it, was a humbling view.

Micheal Hezikiah299 - That would have been so much easier just to say that then me going on about plates etc....2. and the feeling is mutual.

PassageWeather.com. I gotta ya tell Jesse, I have tried to search and find some comfort about the place and one thing is for sure, Bob has done a super job in checking the weather. I hope Dilip is closer to where you are, then two days behind??? You can see why Cape Horn and it's surrounds is such an enigma.

The winds may drop, but those seas can certainly still put on a show, just cause they can. Cheeky Horn ! You are up to it Jesse !! Take care, you are collecting some wonderful memories in some amazing conditions. See you soon. Cheers.

I'm about to run out to Praise Team Rehearsal, and its still frigid out there! Still I was thinking about you. I moved the stick pin much closer to the passage, and suspect thats about where you are. Don't listen to the nay sayers-keep your head and your course- You've not been crusing anyone elses voyage thus far so just because some have had mishaps don't think that means you must..I'm looking at the maps and atlases and all I am seeing is that little pink boat on the otherside of South America..Believeit..you can and will do it...Praying for smooth sailing and cruising swiftly but not turbulently..Just remember tgheres a few out here holding your hands..believing in you..because we know you can do it..Blessings Jess.

Thanks to the shore team for the update on Jessica, so pleased to hear she is doing well and the conditions have eased off a bit for her. With 521 comments to date, shows what a huge following she has, as there would be many more who do not comment. We await patiently as Jesse gets safely around the Horn. Love and best wishes to Jesse and her crew.

Another Jessica Poem

My Office

I knew it there that southern land
Twas America’s, last terra stand
Off to port out through the squall
Rugged coast, one not to fall

Mighty swells rise up behind
Streaky skies, the grey black kind
Winds at 30, a gentle day
Still so nice, to hide from spray

I check the chart, the millionth time
I listen close, the weatherman’s chime
I scan to south, much more than thrice
I fear not land, but floating ice

Ella girl, the crew and I
Some strapped in tight, others keeping dry
Wish for heat, from infernal machine
It’s stopped on us, when cold is keen

The test is here, I’m in it now
Yet firmly East, we point that bow
I claim for all, my blog, my team
The Horn, the sea, a young girl’s dream

Hi Jessica,
I am just an "old" admirer, following your progress with envy.. When I was your age I too wanted to do what you are doing now, but...
Wishing you all the best and I hope the next few weeks are going to be fine - after that it should be a bit easier ( and not so cold ?? )
Welcome back to Sydney - soon !

I am a little worried. There is a major storm coming and each day the forecast shows it arriving earlier. As of now, the outter band is forecasted to reach the cape on Wednesday but if it keeps speading up...ouch.

Another thing that makes it more of a problem, is that the wind for Monday and Tuesday is forecasted not only very light, but heading west at the cape making it take twice as long to cover ground at the cape :(

Jessica has had great luck so far and I hope it holds...I hope that storm dies before it hits her and I also hope she gets near a windward shore before it hits too.

I love checking up on your progress. Be SAFE..You are quite a person. It's cold here in North Dakota with snow blowing around tonight..I really didn't want to go out and snowblow the driveway..And there you are in the middle of the ocean taking Mother Nature on alone..guess I can move a few inches of snow :) Thanks

Hey Jesse
Glad to hear the news from Mum and her helpers that all is sailing along - relatively fine - and you are relishing the conditions and not at all fazed by them, maybe even a bit excited, you were obviously born to do this amazing feat. I hope the conditions continue to be kind to you and you keep warm and you keep your amazing attitude ......
I find myself thinking about you as I go about my daily jobs .... wondering what you are facing atm and as I look at the stars at night I send my good thoughts to you and wonder what is going through you head out there all alone, in the dark and cold, I hope all our best wishes for you help to keep you warm and 'bouyed up' for your journey around the Cape.
Well back to work, must go and find the sheep, the grass is so long now I have trouble finding them and the dog can't see them either, she keeps bouncing up trying to find them... she makes my day.

To the ground crew: Thankyou so very much for bringing us all up to date on Jesse's circumstances and that she is safe and enjoying the challenge that only the Southern Ocean can give her.

Dear Jesse: Glad to hear the cabin is a few degrees warmer, 3 degrees does seem to make a world of difference to the mind set.
Can I suggest when you get some calmer waters you lag the pipe work on the heater. By lagging I mean wrap the pipes in rags or cloth of some kind and duct tape it on this will help keep the liquid in the pipes fluid and free flowing. Its a plumbing trick.
As for you little lassie my heart plumetted when I read one of the bloggers reports on the bad weather in your area. I prayed for your safe keeping and knew your courage and self determination would get you through. You keep up your strength and physical stamina and we you loyal bloggers will worry ourselves sick over you until we get the next instalment either from you or your wonderful land crew.
Take care Pet
Love and hugs
