Becalmed

Just a quick update. Becalmed today, but the Albatrosses have joined us again (see pic below).

Only 450nm to Cape Horn and I'm even more excited now as Mum and Dad flew out of Australia today to watch Ella's Pink Lady rounding the Cape!

"Becalmed"
Maybe we should get away from serious for a day! How about this one?
As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on 280 Interstate. Please be careful!"

"It's not just one car," said Herman. "It's hundreds of them!"

Mum & Dad's "kind of visit" will be very special & very deserved! Enjoy,

Awesome Jesse that your parents will be there to witness your rounding of the horn!! Holy mackerel, I didn't realize the albatross was such a large bird, I'll bet they eat a ton of fish a day! Closing fast on that cape, you are, and here's to a smooth but exciting passage! Anyone of us on this blog would not want another person but you at the helm. God speed Jesse.

Hey Jesse

I'm getting excited too about you reaching a very major milestone over the next cuppla days.

Have you thought about writing a note (you know, one of those Dear Mum and Dad notes explaining how you have done what you have promised and you are missing them and wishing them a happy trip to the Horn etc) and tieing it around the neck of your favourite albatross? I'm sure the big bird would fly to your parents with that note. Then you can put a note for me in a bottle and tell me what a silly old fool I am for having such fantasy moments.

Good luck rounding the horn.

Hi Jessica
I think ‘Samurai Sam’ has a wicked sense of humour. Your Albatross friends are not ‘making out’. They are simply having party and a good beak-wag about you and your pink boat.
“Where has that pink boat come from?”
“I was talking to Charlie three weeks ago. He was flying south of Tasmania and he told me it’s from Australia.”
“Where is it going?”
“Back to Australia!”
“Why?”
“Its doing a circumnavigatethingy with a young Australian girl on board.”
Why?”
“Because she wanted to experience what sailing round her world was like”
“Oh. Well what are all those funny marks on it? What does Hell Bash mean?”
“Its not Hell Bash, silly bird, its Elle Bache, but you’re right – it is sometimes a Hell Bash for her.”
“Oh well – Is she nearly there yet!!!!”
“No, but she’ll get there.”
“Oh, Ok – I gotta go fishing.
See ya at our Horn fishing spot.”
I have no idea what the other two were talking about – they were Cape Horn albatrosses speaking Chilean.
Well Jessica, I hope the wind has picked up for you.

hi Jesse,
I think that's really lovely that mum and dad are going to se you round the Cape. I imagined that you would have to keep your distance, but I have no idea about the coastline there. No doubt at least a good pair of binoculars will help. They have obviously been through so much up to this point, they will be bursting with pride!

You do seem to be attractive to the albatrosses. Well, maybe, if you don't find the man of your dreams at least you know the albatrosses like you! :-)

It's a real countdown now, isn't it? My partner was just asking me this morning how far to go. I hope someone else will be scanning the comments - whoever is doing it must be sorry they volunteered!

The water certainly does look flat! You could practically do some tai chi on the deck! I guess it is another opportunity to check everything before the big day!

Thinking of you daily. Wishing some nice breezes for you.

Hi Jesse,

Today, (Sat, 9th Oct) another teenager steps onto the world stage in a major event. She is Laura Robson a Junior Champion UK tennis player. She and Andy Roddick ranked No. 4 in the world have won through to the final of the Hopman Cup and the match is about to start. Laura is 15 and whilst few like their chances of beating the Spanish couple it is a must see event for me. Think of her if you have a moment and the vibes may aid her. I must now away from computer to TV and my lunch. I'll keep you posted.

You are doing great and making us proud.

Hi Jesse,

What a wonderful photograph. I know that it is most probably somewhat frustrating to again be without the winds but at least it gives you time to catch up on some sleep and regain strength for the trip around the Cape.

How incredibly exciting for your Mum and dad to be going over to watch you round the most talked about piece of sailing water in the world.

I read that you're in for a bit of weather so make sure that you're as strong as possible. After this it's all down hill.

Stay strong brave lady. Find those kind winds.

Good morning Captain Jesse,
Though when you will be able to read this, the day won't be young for you...

It seems the Ocean should remain calm for a while. We hope you have enough wind to progress and do that cape rounding very soon, and meet (by sight) your parents and John Bankart, may they approach you by sea or by air. It must be exciting for you, like a countdown!

Your huge blog-community seems to be still growing larger and larger, and that's really something new. For that too, you are making history. I am sure that when you dreamt of sailing around the world, you didn't expect that you would contribute to make this world better... and that's what you are doing, sailor. Your person and the way you are make everything. Wow. It remains uneasy to understand, as it is like if some magic had worked, but the result is just here.

We'll make a familial Jessica Walk for you tomorrow, braving the freezing cold that is still on France. Anyway, it is better to keep the cold air here than letting them go down southto bother you, so nobody will be allowad to complain here! How it would be convenient, sometimes, to pretend commanding the weather forces.

Have fair westerlies and may the milestony post be issued... quick quick quick! You know that certainly not far from one million of souls are connected to EPL and blowing warm air in your sails!

Hi Jessica
I hope you have some better wind speed and direction today Jesse, by passageweather the weather looks all over the place for the next 4 or 5 days. Should keep you on your toes a bit, but their's nothing you can't handle.
Will your parents do a fly over or charter a boat, this all will be weather dependant I'm sure, but I don't think they would see much standing on the tip of Cape Horn, and the Horn being on a island you will need a boat anyway?
So have a great time and keep us all posted how things are going, we are all so happy for you Jesse.
Keep having fun and KEEP SAFE.
And Andrew, 72, come on,I would like to see a 65 soon! I'm sure you would also.

Hey Jesse,

Well, 'Mother Nature has reared her not so nice side at times but has now allowed you some respite as you push on towards Cape Horn.
Mayhaps time to look at that semi-retired heater again?

How cool will it be having Mum and Dad there as you round the cape. I can sense the excitement. No doubt their visit will be welcome relief for what has been a very trying latter part of this leg. At a time when physical and mental fatigue could be overwhelming, their visit will certainly be the fuel needed to spur you on.

As you round Cape Horn I hope you capture this significant milestone on video but, still a wee way to go yet so stay focussed and let a good steady breeze guide you to that special dual encounter.

The locals (albertross) are already comin out to greet ya.
As always, be safe and attached firmly to your travelling buddy Ella's Pink Lady. Good luck and fly like the wind Jesse.

Hi, Jessica,

Sooooo, it's your job to get close enough to land so your parents can see you, yet not run INTO the land while doing so. That adds a degree of difficulty that would not have been there if all you had to do was aim for "anywhere between South America and Antarctica." Also, if you remain becalmed, they may see a lot more of the local sights of Tierra Del Fuego than they really want to (since, so far as I know, there ARE no local sights). They'll be calling, asking "Could you please maybe start rowing? Get us out of here!" I hope they brought their warmest clothes.

But seriously, that's great of them to come all that way, and I hope you do pass close enough that you can wave at each other.

Or maybe I'm being dense, and they'll hire a BOAT once they get there, and come out to you, instead of your having to go to them. As long as they don't give you anything or take anything from you, just passing close by would not break the rules, right?

I was glad to learn you got the mainsail rope fixed. I hope you can figure out something about the heater. Continued good luck with your voyage.

Michael from Texas, USA

I'm a first time blogger. Never blogged before in fact.I've been following your adventures. Great to see someone pursuing a positive dream.
Not a sailor, so cannot offer practical advice.
As far as Albatross go I was fishing off Sydney Heads and the fish weren't biting. So we fed some bait to an Albatoss. All to soon a flock of gulls started dive bombing it and drove it off. It circled around out of their view, flew in fast, just skimming over the swell and drove straight through them at top speed. Seagulls scattered everywhere!!!! No doubt about who owned that patch of the ocean on that day.
Take care, keep warm

I think its very cool that your parents are going to watch you round Cape Horn. That place has such history attached to it and from the pictures I've seen it's a rather inhospitable place. Weather in central California has been positively awful (for California *laughs*). I grew up in NYC and went to university in northern New England so California outside of the elevations doesn't really have 'weather' in the usual sense. Not sure anyplace in Australia has weather like northern New England (-44 C with at least 3 tp 5 ft of snow on the ground after December 1...and when the snow melts there is mud everywhere). The past two weeks we've had socked in fog but most of it at high elevation so the driving hasn't been dangerous. Temps have been in the 40s (frigid for where I live) and I hardly have a decent jacket with which to keep warm so its bundles of layers (I know how you feel). I suspect that once your round Cape Horn and make for the Falklands you're going to experience quite different conditions (hopefully better). I am always amazed that two oceans can have such a different look at feel. Even the weather color is quite different. To bad you aren't going to be sailing into the Caribbean Sea of Gulf of Mexico...the water there is incredible but then so is the Gulf of California and the Mediterranean Sea. I imagine these to be something akin to the Coral Sea since they all have cool coral reefs, which give the water an incredible blue hue. No corals near the horn I'm afraid! No trees either from what I hear...something like tundra!!

Hi Jesse,

How about your Mum and Dad flying over to see you round the Horn – I'm sure that will be an emotional time for you and them.

As quickly as I can I'd like to send you some Aussie news – I spent most of this afternoon watching the televised finals of the 22nd Hopman Cup (Tennis) in Perth, W.A.. One of the participants was a young lady who did not win any match on her way through the singles eliminations until she beat her last opponent in the final (seemingly to everyone's astonishment). Her male partner then lost his finals match so the doubles had to be played as the decider. They were defeated but not thrashed.

The winners were Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Tommy Robredo playing for Spain. The United Kingdom was represented (for the first time since 1992) by the runner-up team of Andy Murray and Laura Robson. Laura has only played competition tennis as a Junior prior to this and she will be sixteen in a couple of weeks.

Like you Laura seems to be a person who is very focused and who knows where she is going. I could not help thinking of you whenever I saw her on the court throughout the preliminaries – and her Mum was always there as well.

Please give your Mum and Dad a wave from from me as they wing their way over you.

Cheers. Bob from 25 mins due west of Noosa.

I may have to plagerize it and use it (if I can remember it at my age, LOL). It made me laugh at you laughing at her. You are so funny, and you are such a rock. You are always there with uplifting comments for Jesse and for the blog family. Thank you!

New blogger from Austra, Ulli - Welsome and thank you for you websiite. I'll take a look at it as I lived in Germany for 17 years and hit Austria many, many times and all countries around. Loved it and still miss it very much.

You are another one of Jessica's rocks, you are always there with beautiful comments for her. Oh, you might try www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ I have that as a shortcut on my desktop as most of my sisters are in Illinois and my daughter is in El Paso, and another sis in NM.

Hi Jessica,
You’re really doing fantastic in the conditions that you have. Everything happens for a reason, so do the best you can with what you’ve got, and stay cool. You’ll come out of it, and then you’ll have a BIG smile on your face. Yes!!! Plus the fact that you’ll be able to see your parents.
I think it is amazing that your parents will be able to see you at the cape. Isn’t technology fantastic??
People your age (+/-) are in a great period of time. There is so much open to them, if they want to take advantage of it.
If more people could pick up on the drive and dedication that you have, they could accomplish there dreams. Not everybody has to sail a boat to be successful, but it’s the ambition, desire, the drive behind it that motivates people to do better for themselves. That’s the message I see in there. Nobody’s going to hand anyone anything. Look how hard you, Abby and Laura have worked to get to this point.
Oh boy, Sorry, I better quit, but you know what I mean Jessica. God Bless You

For Samurai: Yes, I liked it very much…Mr. Ross said “You can do it Jessica…”

SaltyDog: I’m a Jessaholic also, and I’ve got Jess Stress on top of that.!!!!

Jessica: a special request:
I had sent this letter in before but it must have got lost.
I hope this doesn’t sound to selfish or self-centered.
My birthday is the 11th of this month and I would appreciate it (should you get a chance)if you would send me a Happy Birthday note/card (hezakiah299@yahoo.com) and bake me a chocolate cake. If you should put all the candles (75) on the cake please do not light them since that may be a bit of a fire hazard. LOL…….. I’m sure the furry scallywags will help you devour it. It’s a bit of a milestone for me (¾ of a century) only got 25 more to go. I would add this to all the other framed pictures and documents I have of you.
I want to thank you (and all my fellow bloggers) for all the entertainment and happiness you all have brought me over the last three (3) months.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.
Thanking you in advance, whatever it may be, I am/will remain your faithful fan, friend, follower and admirer.

Hi Jesse - well Everest is near and it is a wonderful thing for you that Mum and Dad will be close by when you achieve this remarkable goal. Although becalmed - you know the old saying: 'calm before the storm' so just keep the mind on the job and it will come toegther nicely for you out there.

I am so proud of you and this milestone is as equally exciting for your devotees believe me! As I said in my last blog this is an exciting time for me and I intend to celebrate your achievement. Continue to work hard and work closely with your land crew and this will keep you confident and safe.

Remember the goal is Sydney and you will do it by keeping the mind on the small steps and experience them accumulating slowly but surely all the way back to home base.

Jessica,

Attitude’s post ( Jan.9 12:05 pm) of a Calvin Coolidge quote is very good. A friend of mine who had coached numerous athletic teams once told me that coaches recruit players based on measurable things like size, strength, speed, age, years of experience, etc. But he said that what many coaches often overlook might just be the most important trait. And that’s how much heart and passion one has. Well, Jess, you have the heart and passion of a champion. And that’s why those who said that you’re not big enough, strong enough, old enough or experienced enough for this circumnavigation should never be in a position that requires assessing individual’s capabilities.

Press on to the Cape and give your Mum and Dad the biggest “Welcome” of their life.

Have fun, stay safe and happy sailing.

Morning Jess!

It's grouse (Fantastic) your mum and dad are going to be with you around the Cape!

I gather they'll be flying over you at some point!

The photo of mine here is when we took a chopper ride over Darwin and around the bay! I just took it with a disposable camera so it's probably not that good!

It's of the local Hova Craft taking passengers for a cruse near Darwin wharf about 6 years ago!

ABOUT THAT HEATER!

Who needs it anyway?

So, you might need to stay rugged up when you could have other wise taken a load off your back and relaxed a bit!

You just gotta watch that your hands have got a good grip on things!

Hope it's a bit warmer out there Jess!

We're in the high 30's and mid 40's next week, so you can have as much as that as you want!

You should strap the heater somewhere safe where you often walk past it, then kick it every time you're feeling cold or just feel like kicking it! lol

Hope that was of no assistance! lol

Have a great day Jessica and thanks for inspiring me to work harder?

I'm a better morning person too and even the Mut see's the changes in me!

Your not just sailing around the world Jesse! Your already a winner to all good people I reckon!

Have a great day Jess!

Billy!

To Sally from Melbourne, by the Bay! (Glad I'm not in Cape Horn) lol

Your work is amazing and priceless! You did the last one so quick!

Cheers!

Weather today 1C wind west. This is typical of this area. We get a wind called a Chinook. This wind is from the west coast and it can change the temperature 50 degrees overnight. I think you will get some very changeable weather down there around the Cape too, but temperatures should not be too bad at this time of year being their summertime. You are getting lots of advice and I know you cannot actually meet with anyone otherwise your voyage would be null and void but a wave and a wiggle of the wings from the jet should be very comforting. I hope the passage through the Cape is not too bumpy for you.
The blog picture is of a snowy owl. Best wishes as always...Russ, Calgary.

This is an unassisted voyage which means NOTHING can be passed to Jess, dropped on her deck by plane or by any other means.
She can only use and have, what was originally on board with her when she left.

Many bloggers have had comments about how Jesse will see her parents. Lots of people talk about her flying over EPL. (Probably because Jesse said they were flying over to see her) She probably meant flying to Chile, not necessarily flying over her as she rounded the cape. Others seem to talk about her standing on the rocks of the Cape waving. Others have mentioned the possibility of them meeting her in a boat. Actually, at this point she has not said how it will happen, but maybe she will in her next blog. For those of you who have not watched the DVD "Lionheart, the Jesse Martin Story", Chapter 13 is about his parents coming to see him. Jesse sailed within about 1 mile from land (not sure if the Cape, or around the corner near Falklands, etc., but land is clear.) The water is calm, and there are a couple of boats to meet him. A large motor yacht and a small motorized rubber dinghy, with his mom screaming and yelling with joy. They get within about 30-50 yards(however many meters!) He later said he expected it to last all day, but it lasted 40 minutes. As far as if you can pass anything, they did not pass him anything but he threw something enclosed in a plastic case to them. So I would think Jessica would be allowed to throw her garbage if Jesse Martin holds the current record having thrown something to his parents!! Anyway, it is exciting Jess, and I know you cannot wait to see your parents! We cannot wait to hear the details!! God bless and have a smooth rounding.

Another Jessica Poem

Feathered Angels

It settles down to glassy sea
Waves to wavelets, only ripples be
The storm has passed, the winds blown by
Above a blue, cold glistening sky

Welcome is this placid time
Refreshing thoughts, allowing mast to climb
Neptune’s Angels, glide around
From every angle, pink yacht they surround

Feathered friends, large wings across
Soaring high, report to boss
This lass is fine, King Neptune Sir
The world is watching, that Pink Lady & her

Well done my girls, stay near and close
For she has caused, so many to post
Drift the breeze, ride when wild
Keep an eye, on Neptune’s child

She is magnificent material, and as both a sailor and a weather man for a trans ocean yacht deliverer, I understand who, what and what she is achieving.

All your posts from across the world, is nothing short of mind blowing and I read everyone of them.

Jessica, our girl, and yes she has become our global girl, has taught us all a lesson we needed reminding of; Life is about those that wish to grab it and it comes at a cost.

This blog is balancing that cost and whether Jessica succeeds is to me, of no consequence, for to me, she already has.

Beautiful day here on the Sunshine Coast Jesse, sunny, about 29 degrees and a bit less humidity than we have been experiencing. I'm sure there are plenty of sailing boats on Mooloolaba harbour today with their crews marvelling at your ability and courage.

I hope you and your trusty crew are warm and dry.

Hi Jessica
Please relay this to Samurai:

Sam. Touch̩ Рa great response to the story about the conversation between the Albatrosses (January 9, 11.11pm). I liked it Рnearly fell off the seat when I read it. Sound does travel well across the water especially in calm conditions.

I also like your paragraph about throwing the buoys overboard ( January 9, 9.44pm)– you’re starting to sound like Jess’s Aunty Sam. Surely she could stuff them into the back hatch under the cockpit and use them as movable ballast. You know the sort - ballast that goes from side to side depending on which tack she is sailing.

I wonder what she’s up to now. Probably clearing the decks after her last party so everything looks in its proper place when her parents fly over. I remember back in my catamaran sailing days two 20year olds who decided to paint their boat in the living room while their parents were away overseas. They were half way through when they received an unexpected phone call from their parents saying they would be home the next day. I believe they let out a few unmentionables, probably in numerous non-English languages, and then panic set in.

Jessica, I hope all is going well!

Hi Jessica,
Everything still in tip-top condition, I hope.
Have you instructed the crew about being in dress uniform, and lined up at the rail when the VIP’s fly over. A one time hand salute will be sufficient, we don’t want their little arms, paws or wings to get tired. (and no talking in ranks). I’m sure the crew will do a fine job, so maybe a little reward should be considered?
I’m looking forward to your parents getting to see their little angel in her finest hour. Many people see their little ones at special events, and feel so proud of them? Not many will ever see an emotional, monumental moment like this. I hope you both will get many pictures, to remember this time in History, and so we can see to. LOL…..
Everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting for this to happen, it’s amazing that the boat doesn’t sink with all the people who are there in spirit.

For WorkerBev: Talk about a Rock. You have to give yourself credit for the fine job you’re doing. I enjoy reading your posts immensely, I enjoy the credit and praise that you pass out to everyone, and you definitely keep us laughing. So plagiarize away, and keep up the good work. How’s Pudi doing???

For Samurai:
Hey Baby, wanna hear me ROOOOAAAAAARRRRRR, but according to the horoscope, if I’m a tiger I should avoid monkeys, you’re a monkey so I should avoid you, but then you said horoscopes don’t count, so I’m not a tiger and you’re not a monkey, and my head is spinning around and around and …………Lol ?!?!?!?!?!?!
Nudge, nudge, wink, wink...say no more, say no more...

Jessica, keep up the good work and be safe and cautious, you’re doing a fine job. We are all very proud of you.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.

Jesse, an English friend of our's husband is currently flying sorties out of the Falklands for the Royal Air Force in a Typhoon jet fighter. They are resticted to airspace 100miles around the Falklands. Will you be sailing that close? If so would you like them to do a fly by? No guarantees but if yes they would like your lat and long and radio frequency so they can talk to you, when you get closer. please let me know what you think. Love your blog!

Hi Jessica,
Hey there Sailor Girl, just thinking about you,(hah, when am I not thinking about you) and how close you’re getting now. It doesn’t seem so long ago that you were pulling out of Sydney, but it’s been said “Time flies when you’re having fun”. At that rate you must be having a ball. I’m really glad for you for that. (Yeah, sounds silly ‘for you for that‘)
I’ve noticed an increase in posters, lotsa new guys, and the older guys are helping to guide them along, it’s really neat, and done so very diplomatically. Mary, Maine comes to mind, nicely done Mary. I use the word older only in the sense of being on this blog, no reference to age, Peace Mary…..LOL….
I also noticed numerous people say when they start something they don’t want to, they think of you, berate themselves a little bit, and then do it. It’s interesting to see these things knowing the effect that you have on people

Samurai:
That might be the symbol for the tiger, but it looks like a ‘roo???
See how it’s resting on it’s tail and the big feet.
There’s a pouch and the little paws. Come on’ a little imagination here. Lol…..Still a fine job.
I’m glad you said that horoscopes don’t count. Had me worried!!!!!

Was looking at P/W and it looks to me like smooth sailing for a while. I just wish it would last all the way back to Sydney. But I know you wouldn’t like that, the wild child needs a little roller coastering, (hah, spell-check busted me on that one). OK, just a little. LOL….
Like I have mentioned to you before, I am not your weatherman nor your navigator, nor would I ever presume to be, for I would surely land you in “Lower Slobovia”, where ever that is. See.!! LOL…..
Bob is an excellent meteorologist and comes highly recommended, so I would not attempt to compete with him. (What a farce that would be). I hope I never tried to give you that impression.
I don’t imagine you listen to anyone other than your Shore Crew anyway and rightly so, stick with the team the rest of us are all in armchairs.
Jessica, I feel better. Yes!!!!

Keep up the good work, I’m very proud of you.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jesse!
Eagerly anticipating the next blog entry to find how much closer you are. There are some very clever people here - calculating daily distance travelled - I'm amazed but not as much as I am with your whole approach to this adventure.

I have escaped for a little while to check if a new entry is posted and will check again later. My twins (boy/girl) turn 19 today so a family dinner planned for tonight. Better go and see if I can get a cake or two in the oven. In the meantime keep enjoying this wonderful milestone you will shortly conquer as the whole world celebrates with you.

Blessings dear Jesse

Hi Jessie,

It's good to see you are making progress each day towards your final goal.

I have been catching up on your posts as I have been away for a week visiting my parents in Newcastle (NSW). The weather in Newcastle was mainly overcast while there but it has been hot back in Canberra (37deg C) today.

I had a day trip up to Nelsons Bay in which the coastal areas were good to look at...aqua coloured water close to the shore which looked quite a picture. Maybe you could use your yacht later on to cruise various bays around Australia one day which would be relaxing I reckon.

Anyway keep safe and stay focused,

Hi Jesse,

Just arrived back from holiday with my husband Dave and two of our children Monique and Darren.

I was very keen to read your blog and hear how you are getting on. You are doing fantastically.

I was thinking of your chill factor as we were at Lake Taupo and there was a cold southerly wind. Maybe the cold wind was from Cape Horn!

Take care, keep warm and I'm so exicted that your Mum and Dad are going to be watching you as you round Cape Horn. You have such lovely, supportive, loving parents.

Warmest regards Jan (Auckland, New Zealand)

Hi Jessica just anxiously waiting for your next post. Just think Jessica you will be the first female teenager "ever" to have rounded the "Cape" as a solo sailor. That is an achievement on its own. You are doing so well Jessica and what a great team you have back in Queensland. What great parents you have to support you as they do and to give you the choice to make the decision to do this voyage. They must have been so confident in your abilities to handle all that the seas can throw up. You are showing such fortitude and proving how good a sailor you are. Hope the seas are not too rough for the rest of the journey and that you manage to rest.
You are half-way Jessica. Next stop Australia.
Just remember Jessica that as you round the "Cape" your mum and dad are only a cooee away from you....God speed
sending lots of love and hugs

I sent you an inspiration before - called 'Press On'
I'll send it again when you've cleared Cabo de Hornos (however they spell it)
So glad to hear that Mum and Dad will be close and wave to you, to give you love and so much more strength. After that you're on the HOME STRAIGHT! One million or probably many more of us will be sailing to 'See you at the Heads' - Imagine your welcome... - Take care, Alan and Lena, Gold Coast, Oz

Hi Jess, This is my first blog posting and I have been following your journey with great interest. Sitting here in Cairns (Far North Queensland Aust. for those internationals that may not know) with tropical humidity and about 29o is a direct opposite to what you are experiencing. The marvels of modern technology that we can all be so close to you and yet so far all at the same time. My main motivation in posting this message is to own up and confess. You see, I was one of those who, during those last few weeks before your departure, believed you shouldn’t be making the trip. Yes, I based my opinion on the media reports and the so called experts but you young lady have made this 50yo eat humble pie and dare I say many thousands of others. Although you still have far to travel your achievements so far leave me in no doubt you WILL do this. Like I said I sit here gladly eating humble pie. What is also so astounding is the following you have from around the world. When some choose to attempt to tear the world apart here is a young Aussie girl, almost single handedly, bringing together people from many nation’s. You are not only and inspiration to all generations but to all nationalities as well. When there is so much tragedy in the news each day you bring hope and inspiration to so many. You will set two records I believe; one of course being the youngest to do this but the other, less obvious right now, will be the youngest person to galvanize the world’s interest from an inspirational sense, we see it already in those posting message to you. I’m not sure what the limit is to posting blog messages but I suspect you may “crash the Server” before trips end but I assume your well organized support team have a contingency plan for this anyway. So take care, keep safe, and just keep doing what you’ve been doing, keeping us all enthralled with your wonderful journey and experiences. I am planning to be in Sydney to see you finish, and yes I will still have with me that “humble pie”. Cheers Jim B and family Cairns.

Hey Todd.

Jess's parents won't be sailing out of Santiago Chile as thats a couple thousand mile north. Sailing down from the closest port to there they would miss Jessica by days if not weeks.

Rather interesting terrain on google earth looking at the area involved though.

Now this is all conjecture on my part but I think it's more likely they will fly down from Santiago, if that was their arrival airport in Chile to someplace like Ushuaia, then a charter boat south to the cape itself, or even a small aircraft to fly overhead EPL.

No matter how the connection happens I'm sure they got it all figured out.

Enjoy the day Jessica but no touchie sorry, you're on a solo remember. The day of family hugs will come again, Sydney for sure, you can antisipate that day.

ya parents ain't gonna let you go anywhere for a few days lol

No post today... Captain Watson and all them scallywags of the fluffy crew must be cleaning the deck and tudying the cabin before the visit of Admiral Bankart, the Queen Mum and Lord Roger of Buderim.

Sure, sure, blogging fellows, they will not put a real foot on board and waste the unassisted status of Jesse, but nowadays with all the spycams, being so close they could well find out what has happened on EPL since she left Sydney.

They could manage to see.. all kinds of chocolate cakes' crumbs... Feathers... Empty Easy Food wrappings... A dead squid... A tiny piece of Toblerone...

All clear signs that there were wild parties organized on that yacht. Certainly with buoys, too. Some nights must have been so hot that the heater went out of order.

Some new naysayers might start argue: "We never believed a teenager could really want to go on sea for 8 months alone, that was a hoax! In fact it was a plot to open a floating nightclub and organising wild parties with a very loud music and undergroung singers, with all kinds of scallywags coming in, changing location fast enough to avoid the police controls". And: "Why do you think they painted the yacht bright pink? Is that a color for a boat?Obviously because it's a night club!"... And:
"By the way, where this Silly guy reported in the club one night, and who disappeared? There should be an inquiry".

So it's a very good thing for your dark business that the Ocean calmed down, Jessica. Big Ted, Chick and your other accomplices will do the crime scene cleaning, while you control the approach of the V.I.P.s. Take care, and hide all of the buoys! :-)

Less seriously, have fair winds and round that piece of land soon and smooth. We can't wait for that box to be ticked and to salute you as a hero. Maybe you are not the strongest one (Hercules, Rambo, etc) but you are for sure the most charming, witty and beloved.

Hi Jesse, (Beverly here in Tassie).
I'm sooo excited that your Mom and Dad are on their way to see you round the Cape. I pray for clear weather so you can see each other.
I'm not sure how they are going to manage that, helicopter, boat, plane, swim? But I doubt that anything will hold them back.

I know there will be tears of joy on all sides, but please know that with the joy, after everyone is gone and you are back on your way sailing, you will be alone and you will feel it many times more than you did when you left Sydney. Please be aware of this and keep your eyes on your goal. I know it will be so tough, you will probably want to just chuck the entire journey in and go home with your Mom, but THIS IS YOUR LIFE. This is something you will never, ever do again, well maybe, LOL Your Mom will have just as much love and cuddles for when you get home, probably more, than she does now.

When you feel really down after the meeting, just ask God to give you the peace you need to get on with your daily activities. Keep yourself busy, busy, busy. That will help heaps.

Remember God is right there beside you to listen to whatever you want to talk about, and His Legions of Angels are surrounding you and EPL guiding you safely and surely towards and around the Cape and to your parents loving eyes. {{{HUGS}}} Beverly & Andrew Penney, Bridgewater, Tasmania workerbev@yahoo.com

BTW, you should get together with Carol in Florida about your "crew in uniform" story because I think it would make for a very enchanting, illustrated childrens story book, just like her dolphin story.

Hello new Cyberpod Members and Jesse,

If you really want to understand why Jesse is so special, now is a good time to read all her blogs from the beginning, before she left Sydney.
I did it again for the second time to look for a clue about the heater (It is new). If you click on the pictures before she went to sea, you will find that they are high resolution and show much more detail. By reading the early blog entries you will see the absolutely incredible determination and drive that Jesse has that made all of this happen!

Here is a link to one of those early blogs showing how the creatures of the sea always seek her out!

Less than 300 nm now......
Patience is definitely not my biggest virtue!
Thinking about Jessica and willing excellent conditions to get to the Horn, to have the right conditions in the weather to meet her Mum is my lot at the moment until we get the happy news!

In the meantime I read all the interesting comments from our Jessica fanclub and laugh, cry and marvel!

Jim B from Cairns:
Good on you! I think you have eaten enough humble pie, no need to bring it to Sydney!

Brumbyy:
Another admirer here of your poem 'feathered angels'

The sunshine coaster family:
very clever

What clever 'vegemites' you all are!
And what good company!

Keep it up!

To Jessica, fair winds and I am all choked up as well, when I think you will see your Mum soon.
What an unforgettable experience this will be!

Keep well, keep happy and above all else stay safe,

The word verification is 'sudsi'
are you taking another bath, Jessica`?
