Better Wind

I'm pretty thrilled to have made good progress to the east over the last two days. We've finally had 15-20 knots of steady breeze and Ella's Pink Lady has been surfing along nicely. The wind is also expected to keep increasing, so you never know, it might start getting a bit more like the Southern Ocean down here after all!

The light drizzly rain has become a constant and the temperature seems to drop a little lower each day. At least the fog seems to have disappeared now (see pic below). There's still plenty of birds around, but I'm not doing so well at getting pictures of them as they just won't sit still for me. I'll post some pictures just as soon as I manage to get some half decent shots!

When I venture up on deck these days, I feel a bit like a clumsy elephant with all the gear that I have to wear. First there's all the thermals and various different layers, then boots and wet-weather gear, hat, life jacket and what feels like half the hardware stashed in the pockets of my overalls. I'm always carrying my knife, PLB (personal EPIRB), shifter and more often than not a selection of various other tools. It's far easier to just take most of the spanner set with you, when picking the wrong size means an extra round of clipping and un-clipping tethers and opening and replacing washboards.

I'm still having the time of my life, doing a lot of reading keeping up a constant stream of hot drinks, having fun with my cooking (my chocolate pudding was a great hit with the crew yesterday!) and today I've a had few little jobs to do when shackles on the vang (which holds the boom down) andwindvane decided to give up the go. But a bit of improvising and we were all good again.

So just 1500 nm to Cape Horn and 2009 almost over. I can't believe where this year has gone. It's nearly 2010 already!

Jesse

Hi Jesse, you are doing SO well, just another day at the office for you by now - good job.

I smile continuously reading your post and all your extended families blogs, just because I don't respond every day doesn't mean I am not there with you, I would only be saying what most others are.

I can pick the new bloggers straight away, now that's scary, I seem to be able to recognise the new names immediately.

Had to smile (again) reading the pee action; boys are so lucky with there equipment at times like these, and going on picnics - ha ha. Good luck with all that....

Glad you had a lovely Christmas, loved your pics and loved reading everyone's responses of their celebrations, good to hear how we celebrate in different parts of the world.

Won't ramble on Jesse, keep up the good work, love that you are still having the time of your life, how many of us can say that? Happy New Year to you and everyone reading this, let's hope it is a little easier on everyone.....x

Hey there,
I was thinking about what you said about in and out of the boat, and was wondering if all the washboards are on a leash or tether attached to the boat? I think its an IOR requirement, and have them attached on my boat with a single chain (though you can use a rope) through eye straps. Though there are other ways you can have them all attached, as they are another thing that you would not want to risk loosing.

oh yes (IOR):"All blocking arrangements (e.g., washboards) shall be capable of being secured in position with the hatch open or shut and shall be secured to the yacht to prevent their being lost overboard."

Are yours securely attached while opening and closing?

Though I mostly keep them secured in place, and scramble through the top hatch, though sometimes this is too dangerous or awkward.

Glad you are on tethers and jacklines, I wear them always on my boat too, as I often single hand, or have unskilled crew.

Its a cumbersome task on and off tether, but one that I am always glad to do, and usually forget I even have them on as soon as I get them on.

Oh yes, and are you attached to the boat, before you open the hatches with your tether to something secure inside the boat, and stay attached until you are attached outside? I know this is something the Volvo racers are supposed to do. And makes sense to do.

yours truly, Tim B.

Great news to hear you are keeping your knife handy, clipping on and all those other small daily practices that are the essence of good seamanship. Even without the technology that allows me to write to you like this, your seamanship is what keeps you safe

I speak from a less ambitious experience than yours, having lived at sea for six months sailing the east coast of Australia in a 25 footer. But I often tell people who ask my opinion of your journey that you are better placed than 90% of the people I met on my ocean odyssey to look after yourself and your boat.

Even without the communications technology you have about you, your most valuable asset is your seamanship (dead reckoning, leadline and lookout they used to say) because no technology can replace the kind of commitment to detail you are displaying.

I sailed without a two-way radio and only an EPIRB for emergencies and the experience of living with the silence (or not) of the ocean allowed me to learn all the subtle signals that come to you in those moments when it is just you and your boat and the sea.

You already had everything you need to live with the ocean before you began. People like me are with you every day. Enjoy.

Thanks so much for the kind words. You're so right that Jessica's blog does feel almost like a gathering of old friends. It is certainly a group of people with a mutual admiration for a wonderful young lady. But it's Jessica's warm, welcoming personality that has really made it such a pleasure for everyone to participate in her blog. My guess is that her wonderful traits are a product of a very caring, loving family. Thank you for introducing yourselves. It would be great to hear more from you.

Hi Jesse,

Great job. I'm glad to see that you're managing to relax, read and rest. There'll be some tough days ahead, but you're well prepared for them.

And it's good to know that even if this sailing lark doesn't work out, you can always make a career as a baker !

It might be cold with you, but it's even colder here in NY ! It was -10 Centigrade here this afternoon, and that was without the wind chill. At least I don't get soaked by spray !

All the best,

Hi Jesse!
Congratulations on making good time toward Cape Horn! Now your cruise will take on another aspect, as you will be running with the wind for days on end. My thoughts are with you everyday as you enter this new and challenging phase. (Those sailors following the blog will be pleased to know that the Pink Lady has a special "boom brake", to control the boom when jibing. For non sailors lets just say that the boom is something that must be watched and controled at all times).I laughed at the image
you made of "Michelin man" Jesse, with all your getup on.
I have been reading the five new sailing books I got for Christmas. The one I received "Short-handed Sailing " by Alastair Buchan gave me new insight into the issues involved in short handed ocean passages. Very interesting read. Alot of great practical information.
I don't know if you have figured out who "To the sea " is, but the blueheron blogspot is devoted to his ocean going yacht. Great information there as well.
This is a note to your grandparents, Billie and Tom in NZ. Your Welcome! You must be incredibly proud of your amazing granddaughter.

Wishing you the best as always!

Hi Jessica & nearly HNY 2010.

You're sure whizzing along lately !!

Your observations about the Albatross are very accurate as far as I remember:
They use the air movement above the ever moving waves to "slide" around on & use very little energy as they do it....therefore the effortless appearance.

Here's a bit of the poem The Ancient Mariner. You'll recognize it for sure.

"With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And forward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
And southward aye we fled.

And now there came both mist and snow,
And it grew wondrous cold:
And ice, mast-high, came floating by,
As green as emerald.

..................

At length did cross an Albatross,
Thorough the fog it came;
As if it had been a Christian soul,
We hailed it in God's name.

It ate the food it ne'er had eat,
And round and round it flew.
The ice did split with a thunder-fit;
The helmsman steered us through!

And a good south wind sprung up behind;
The Albatross did follow,
And every day, for food or play,
Came to the mariners' hollo!"

I also love the Albatross !!!

Godspeed....Graemek

Hi Jessica
All us bloggers are just as thrilled as you are Jesse, to hear all is going great.
Wind of 15-20 knots is I guess a perfect speed for you and EPL, not to fast, not to slow. The forecast on passageweather looks good for next week, may get up to 30knots a couple of times, but I'm sure you will handle that ok.
You have gone up another level, you can use a shifter (to our American friends, I think you call it a adjustable wrench)a girl after my heart, only kidding.
Now with the colder weather and all these layers of clothing you must wear, you will soon be dreaming of those warmer times gone by.
Could you, when you have time, what camera gear you have on EPL, I'm sure someone out here in blog land may be able to give you some tips on capturing some bird shots.
So keep up with the hot drinks, keep having fun and keep safe.
Cheers George Simmons
Lots love from Exmouth WA Australia
PS This is for Samurai.
I seen something that may help you out Sam, there was a article in Cruising Helmsman, I think it was called a Wee Wiss or something like that, a small funnel shaped object to fit er you know what! and then you girls can wee like us boys. I'm sure it would be a little messy though.

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT PINK!

What a day Jess! Just a normal day delivering soil, rocks and stuff in the dump truck.

I got to this address where there was a pink caravan and 4x4 in the drive way! Both were sign written with sponsors and stickers all over! I dropped off some sleepers actually and when the bloke came out, I asked, so what's all this about? He told me that it's his daughter and that she's running around Australia for breast cancer! He told me a bit about her story and her dog was in the van. I didn't get to say hi to the collie as I had to go. But just checked out her site then a bit and I reckon she's pretty awesome.

That's 2 pretty amazing chicks from Australia that have got my attention out of about 22-25 million people in 2009.

Maybe you and everyone on your site can check her out!

Maybe you guys have something in common!

Jess meet Deborah De Williams! Google her name!

Take care Tarzan! (Jesse) lol

And to all your faithful fans and followers, who love you and are so proud of you, as well. As I have said before, no one has ever made such an impact on the world as you have. For Granny and Granddad: (AKA Billie and Tom)
Glad to hear from you, and I enjoyed your post very much.
I would tell you that you have a very beautiful Granddaughter, but you already know that. She’s a very special young lady, she doesn’t know me but she has been a big help to me in various ways. Never have I came across someone as interesting as Jessica. I love to read her blogs, she makes you feel like you’re right there with her. I’m sure you are very proud of her, and rightly so. I just hope that some of her peers pick up on her ‘can do’ attitude.
We definitely could use a few more like her in this troubled world.

Jessica, keep up the good work, you’re doing a fine job.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower,
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Well... if the birds won't sit still for you, then what about a video of them flying around?
I love your descriptions, and being a visual person I love the photos and videos too.
In the foggy photo, is that a low cloud in the background I see, or a wave?
So far seems you've been sailing in front of or behind, or more south or more north of the stronger weather. How much stronger are the winds being forecast for you as you near the cape?
Have you put your request in with the wind Gods for the perfect weather for you? ... not too mild and not too wild. Just enough for a good southern ocean adventure!
The only sailing I've done has been on lakes, but I used to white water raft, and have been thrown out of the raft with big waves and wild water in the early spring runoff. I had a life vest on... but the water was so so cold. Those long ago experiences make good stories now, and the endings being obviously good. So I wish for you good endings to all the adventures you'll have.

Your blog family is starting to be too funny. If you want your spirits up-lifted, we just have to log into your blogs and read all the comments. It takes a while but that is part of the experience also.

For some of the blog family:
Mary, Maine, USA (I'm from Illinois orig so I love reading of the people in the USA as I get pretty homesick sometimes). Not unlike Jesse. You are always there and so gentile. Thank you! And I loved your philosphy according to Mary, wrote it down so I wouldn't forget it. Is that plagarism? I hope not.

Shore Team: You don't get the recognition you deserve for all the hard work you are putting in but please know that most of us think about you guys almost as much as we think about Jesse. Thanks for keeping her safe.

Mom & Dad: Can't thank you enough for raising such a remarkable young woman. She is so mature, fun-loving, adventuresome, and just about every other good adjective I can think of. And it all comes down to how she was raised. You must be two very, very remarkable people. Thank you so much for "cutting the umbilical cord" and letting Jess become the woman she was meant to be.

Sally in Melbourne: I don't know how you do it but your computer art is really awesome.

RichieParis: You're everywhere... you're everywhere! I loved your "21st Century's Legends" published in 2345AD, really special. You're funny! LOL Telling Jess not to go to sleep on the shelf with the "crew".

Mike Kay Avon Indiana: Your comments and feelings are definitely not "sappy". If they were, I'm sure there are a lot of sappy people out there. I feel the very same way you do. Jessica has impacted my life in ways I will be forever grateful.

To The McGraths: What a wonderful idea about a flag! Respectfully request our names be added if there is room, Beverly & Andrew Penney, Bridgewater, Tassie (workerbev@yahoo.com). Thanks so much for thinking so far ahead to welcome our girl home. [I think the shore team needs to think about renting a venue there at the docks for when she gets home, I'm sure the blog family that are able to be there would be more than happy to help defray costs].

All the ol' Salts: I'm so glad there are so many of you out there. Your comments are so practical. I'm sure any sailors in the blog family appreciate them as much as I do. Thanks for being so kind as to share your knowledge.

Michael, Kingwood, WV: you sir, are steady as a rock and I appreciate you so much and also for praying for our little Jessica. Prayer goes everywhere and God is on EPL and a Legion of Angels are all around her.

Jesse and shore team - when you get blogs in another language, like the German one today, you can go to a website (freetranslation.com) cut and paste and pick out which language you want to go to and from and it will do it for you.

Well, this is so darned long I'll probably get kicked out of "home" if I don't shut up. But our "family" is getting so unique sometimes you just "gotta say something" to them. And this was a "gotta" day I reckon.

Jess, please stay clipped on hon, and keep carrying all your stuff and put superglue on your hands to hang on with when the weather gets rough. We don't want you to be a squid and flop around the deck.

Know that God is right there beside you on EPL and His Legion of Angels are all around you and her. Praying for your safety, health, and humour - Beverly & Andrew Penney, Bridgewater, Tassie.

Hi Jesse,

I try and read your blogs every evening and then go on and enjoy the comments of the world-wide family you have created. It's enough to get this old mind thinking of trying to sail again.

The support you have from your shore-based teams and from your "fans" is wonderful. I am sure that all of them must be extremely proud of you. I know I am as you are an inspiration to all of us - and, hopefully, your peers.

I wish you a very Happy New Year for 2010 and fair winds for the remainder of your quest.

Further enjoyment on my part has come from wonderful people from around the world as they provide encouragement and support and many outburst of laughter.

You are wonderful!

Bob from 25minutes due west of Noosa.

Dear Jesse, Just read the news about the storm. Great to see you came through it intact. I don't know much about dolphin behaviour but it sounds like one of those fabled encounters between seafarer and dolphin, the type of human/animal connection that seems to occur when we are stripped of our outer layers and operating as one with the world. At the very least you must regard it an excellent omen, an indication that all is as it should be out there for you.
Enjoy that special feeling, Susy (Brisbane)

WOW, you are going great mate, I can only imagine what you are going through and I wish you all the best.
I have been in larger sail boats (55 metre Leuawin) in the type of storms you have just faced in the last day or so and was pretty crook and sorry for myself.
Even this week I crossed South Passage Bar at the bottom of Moreton Island in my 20 foot stink boat and had a wave stand up in front of me that I punched over and my mate said after he caught his breath, "people would pay for that kind of ride", well not me!
Congrats and keep going and show them what you can achieve.

A Dolphin escort!

It is so very fine to hear that you are meeting the challenges dealt you by the South Pacific and (apparently) remain undaunted.

And it's a relief to hear of Bob's "spot on" weather forcast and the role it played in your immediate preparations.

At some point it will be great to hear your take on it all. Did the wind shift direction at all? Did Parker manage to steer you through? Was it a lone dolphin or a group (pod?).

You are more than one third of the way through your voyage now. That would make the total voyage 7.5 months, right? Could you possibly be back in May?!?

Dear Blog Family:
At the risk of stating the obvious:
1. Complaining about offensive blogs in the commentary serves to call attention to those very comments.
2. If there is a question of taste in the content of some blog that you might want to post, let Jessica be your guide. If she has discussed this topic, you should feel free to discuss it. She has excellent taste and none of us followers should consider it our perogative to push the margins of the blog beyond hers.
3. Ask yourself how many drinks you have had before you hit the "publish" button. If you were drunk when you wrote the blog, wait and review it when you are sober.
4. Don't forget, this is Jessica's blog worthy of her. Please don't turn it into something else.

Fair winds,

Richard Lathrop
PS. Comment about Jessica's voyage on her blog site. If you want to comment about the rest of this commentary, feel free to contact me directly. captain@virtualvoyages.net
I love you all, but this blog should be about Jessica.

Hi,
I just read the "Latest News" and I was glad to hear you made it through the storm safely. Not to mention you had a friend join you. Dolphins are amazing animals! I love that it stayed with you for so long!

In an enrty early on, you wern't quite sure about the role or need of a hair dryer on board. I'll share my tip-hopefully it will come in handy. When I visited Melbourne in the end of June a few years back, I experienced a damp cold that kept me chilled. Even though my hair was dry, I used the dryer on my head and my hands and my whole body warmed up. I guess it can be used as a quick little mini heater.

Wishing you continued success!

Victor C. Pankouken, are you serious ? I have read somewhere before that you are Eastfrisian or so, somewhere behind the dike in Germany. I guess it is time to climb over this dike, grab a boat like Jess and widen your horizon by sailing the ocean. Some other blogger has painted a funny picture of a Siberian hut with sandbags on the roof to keep cabbage dish fermentations under control, lol. Victor, don't take it as an offence, but I had to imagine you sitting in that mob as well, fermenting on problems that aren't that big. When Germany was run by the Prussian military, didn't they command the troops at least once with "AT EASE !" ?
So there you have it, screw your "cringe level" even a few notches higher and "AT EASE !"

Captain Jessica-

The dophin kept you company and helped you through the storm. They are the most amazing creatures, and this one sensed your concern and stayed with you.
This is the nature of dophins.
Exactly why I love them!
They have a history of helping humans in many situations while in the oceans.

Just caught up with the latest report, I'm not too sure who wrote it but thanks.

Sounds like your having a bit of fun. 5 meter waves and 40 knots of wind can sure test your rigging. Sounds like your well prepared, I only hope EPL holds up her end of the bargain.
You set such an amazing example for people of all ages around the world. Look at me , I even let the kids set up a Gmail account. I really have no idea exactly what that means.
At my age, technology is a new grader.
I always feel that having a dolphin watching over, is good luck.
In case I miss you today. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Don't suppose you will have fire works where you are. I'd like to think that some of the fire works tonight in Bris will have your name on them. Take care princes.

To Anonymous December 30, 2009 10:43 PM: Ease up! Jess gave us photos and video for Christmas. YOU try taking picutres managing a storm with 40k and 5 meter swell and rain. When you can do that, you can post your own blog somewhere.

I seriously doubt Jessica's goal is readership on the blog anyway. You need to regard a photo as a treat, not something owed to you. Get real. For New Year's, a few kindnesses for others would help you over your resentments, unless you are using tongue-in-cheek humor.

Sorry, Jessica, the Mother Bear in me comes out to growl sometimes. Smoother sailing! Yay, dolphin power!

Greetings, Jess! Your voyage is getting near where I was three years ago (on a much bigger ship...lol). On the Antarctic peninsula we went ashore in a bay and a few of us fools went in "swimming," Yes, in swimming suits, no wetsuits, but getting all that gear off and on again was the worst part!! In order to get a certificate we had to go completely under. I can't say it was any colder than Lake Superior, where the water temp, year around, is around 38 degrees!!! Of course, close to shore, in summer it gets a bit warmer. It does keep us northerners healthy!!

Sending warm wishes from Minnesota where we have a very white new year and the temp today is 16F. Godspeed to you and the best of wishes for gracious weather and your continued good health. My granddaughter's name is Jessica and she is a sophomore in college this year. Jessica's are awesome girls!! Judy

Jesse,
It almost sounds like you are complaining that you aren't getting bad weather! I for one am hoping you have clear skies and calm seas and a good steady wind to the east. You need to get a picture of yourself with all that gear. It almost sounds like you look like Ralphie's little brother in his snow suit in the US movie "A Christmas Story." He was so bundled up he could barely move.
What are your big New Year's Eve plans? going to throw any parties for the crew? Maybe some sparkling grape juice for the animals?
It is good to hear from you again, missed you.

Jessica,

So the Fearsome 50's decided to live up to their name. What an adrenaline rush, huh. You're so fortunate to have such a quality meteorologist in Bob so you and your team can prepare as you did. It definitely has to be a confidence builder to get that storm under your belt and to come through so well. That deserves a real big "Atta Girl!" You make us more proud everyday. And to have a new friend escorting you. How cool is that? Well, I hope the winds and swells ease off a tad to make the final leg to the Cape a little more comfortable, but I guess what you see might be more the norm. Have fun with it but be extra conscious of all safety measures. I know you will but I just had to say it.

Have fun, stay safe and happy sailing.

I think that the following excerpt from Jessica sums up this very special young lady, even natures finest have befriended her.

“When the wind started to pick up, a dolphin swam right up along side Ella’s Pink Lady. Then every time I looked out the porthole, it was still there with me. The amazing thing is, I had not seen a dolphin for weeks – even more amazing was that this one stayed with me for over 6 hours, all the way through the storm.”

I am also in awe of this very special Australian teenager, her journey has certainly been the highlight of 2009 for me and I am looking forward to the remainder of this incredible adventure.

Each new day is a path of wonder, a different invitation. Days are where our lives gradually become visible.

Often it seems that we have to undertake the longest journey to arrive at what has been nearest all along. Mornings rarely find us so astounded at the new day that we are unable to decide between adventures. We take on days with the same conditioned reflex with which we wash and put on our clothes each day. If we could be mindful of how short our time is, we might learn how precious each day is. There are people who will never forget today. […]

The liturgy of dawn signals the wonder of the arriving day. Magic of darkness breaking through into color and light is such a promise of invitation and possibility. No wonder we always associate the hope and urgency of new beginning with the dawn. Each day is the field of brightness where the invitation of our life unfolds. A new day is an intricate and subtle matrix; written into its mystery are the happenings sent to awaken and challenge us.

No day is ever the same, and no day stands still; each one moves through a different territory, awakening new beginnings. A day moves forward in moments, and once a moment has flickered into life, it vanishes and is replaced by the next. It is fascinating that this is where we live, within an emerging lacework that continually unravels. Often a fleeting moment can hold a whole sequence of the future in distilled form: that unprepared second when you looked in a parent’s eye and saw death already beginning to loom. Or the second you noticed a softening in someone’s voice and you knew that a friendship was beginning. Or catching your partner’s gaze upon you and knowing the love that surrounded you. Each day is seeded with recognitions.

The writing life is a wonderful metaphor for this. The writer goes to his desk to meet the empty white page. As he settles himself, he is preparing himself, for visitation and voyage. Each memory, longing, and craft set the frame for what might emerge. He has no idea what will come. Yet despite its limitations, his creative work will find its own direction to form. Each of us is an artist of our days; the greater our integrity and awareness, the more original and creative our time will become.

--John O'Donohue, from "To Bless the Space Between Us"

“A new year is unfolding – like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.”
Happy New Year Jesse.

To Jessica Grandparents....you are most welcome indeed...it is a beautiful gesture to hear from you...

I have been wondering just how much of Jessica's family and friends have been "quietly" sitting on
the side reading all these wonderful blog things....You guys should say something too!

Jess is a very special young lady and there is something very universal going on here.
This modern Technology we call the internet has brought the world and Jessica into our lives,
by the time this journey has finished Jessica will be a stronger person in more ways than one,
just the little things like having a Dolphin stay with you during her first storm or an Albatross flying
above are natures way of being curious, just as much as it is Jesse's curiosity to be where she is right now.

Thank you Jessica....you said "I just wanted to do something"...you said "I didn't have anything going for me"
well..with every nautical mile under your belt you are writing your name into history, the future beckons...young girl,
you are a legend in the making, hell in my heart you are already a legend!

Now to other matters...;)

Grant Fjermedal makes an interesting observation:-

"Hooray for Jessica for posting so frequently that our comments have such a short shelf life"

And a quick Thank you to Angus...

To Sam...there's nothing wrong with my Kangaroos!...."boy"...hasn't there been some reply's!....;)...she'll be right!

To "Sails"...very nice bit of writing...

I could go on and on....there's soooo many good comments!

Now...in trying to keep things "short" if you are interested in some Satellite imagery of where

Happy New Year to Jessica, your family and all your shore team!

It's 7:40pm here in Maine, on Wednesday, so Australia's 16 hours ahead of me, I think. Yep, it's almost 2010 in Jessica's Land. Knowing Jessica, you'll soon be celebrating with your family in their time zone via Sat phone. (Thursday around 8:00a.m.EST, USA)

I realize you're probably working right now but I hope you've had a sensational day. I'm elated that your dance partner, the dolphin, stayed so close to you throughout the 6 hours of the storm. Their sensory perception faculties are so acute! I truly wonder what the creature was feeling by staying so close to the glorious pink whale stallion galloping through the seas. I'm glad you had each other to focus on. The picture is pure magic, to my mind, and one to be treasured forever.

May your strength and clarity be everpresent, Jessica. We are all with you in spirit. I send you continued courage and blessings from my end.

Enjoy the ride and stay safe!

Mary, Maine, USA

PS.
*Welcome Ben from Paraguay!

*From Sails, the writing from John O'Donahue is wonderful. Thank you. I'm going to print it and take it to my friends tomorrow as part of our NYE celebration.

*Hi, Richard Lathrop....all good points and good to be repeated. Thank you.

*Trudy and WorkerBev, thanks for your kind comments to me. Cheers!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR BLOGGING CREW. YOU ROCK!!!

I'm going to make my chocolate cupcakes with Jessica's Pink Frosting now......

hi Jesse,
Just a quick visit to say Happy New Year to you, your family and other support team members, and of course, your latest support 'person', the dolphin! Glad you've survived your first taste of what the southern ocean can serve up. No doubt you coped very well and confidently, with all your preparations. Another couple of weeks to go maybe before the pressure eases a bit for you.

You seem to be able to take good care of yourself so I'll bite my tongue and refrain from offering any maternal advice.

Celebrate as best you can knowing that 2010 will be your year!

Wishing you just enough wind.

Hi Jessica,
Just picked up on the storm, thanks to the Shore Crew, that you just went through. WOW, didn’t I tell you to have patience, you’d get your roller coaster ride? LOL…. I’m glad you and EPL (and the scallywags) came through it without a hitch. I didn’t expect anything like this so soon. I saw the cell, but I didn’t think you were any where near it. That looks like it will last until tomorrow unless you sail out of the storm further south. Passage Weather showed that the center of that cell had winds of 30 to 35 kn. (40 to 46 mph) and waves up to 8m (26ft). Better stick with Bob, your own meteorologist, he really had it pinpointed.
You are incredible, I knew you’d attack it like it wasn’t anything to be concerned about, so blasé, no fear “ain’t skeered”.
“Waves at 5m and gusts hitting 44 knots, but everything went well,” said Jessica. I had to laugh when I read that. I don’t think anything phases that girl. Not being a sailor myself, these stats unnerve me, but I guess when you’re used to it there really not so bad. ????
That’s fantastic, about the dolphin, not having seen one for a long time and then this one stays with you throughout the storm. It really makes a person wonder of the intelligence of these mammals (?). Miss Dolphin looking at you and saying “Don’t worry lady, I’m right here by your side, I’ll protect you”. Isn’t imagination wonderful. LOL…..
Looking forward to your next blog about this storm, and how you felt about it.
Going back through the posts I found this note: Jessica means “God Hears”.

Loads of love and hugs, your faithful fan and follower,
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jess!

It's great to hear how you stay safe without taking risks. We look forward to every blog and you seem to gain 5 years of maturity and experience with each article (you started at about 40). You often hear the words " I have 30 years of sailing experience" when in fact they only have 1 year 30 times over. You are just the opposite. You better multiply your years at sea by 10 and that is closer to the real story.

Looking forward to some more photos!

Stay safe! Our love to your crew!

Hi Jesse - good one darl you've killed them out there. I was so worried when I read the update NEWS that my Jess-Stress meter went through the roof. But you are a real trooper and it was great you had a friend along for the ride -not Silly this time but WOW!! a Dolphin. You have shown again you are able to manage things in tough conditions with some aplomb.

Now we need to get the feet back on solid ground and keep the head in the moment. I suspect things can change rapidly in that part of the world and you need to be on the alert at all times.

I'm sure we'll hear from you on 1 Jan 2010 but if for some reason you are too HAPPY NEW YEAR to you. You are a beautiful girl and as an Australian I am immensely proud of you and privileged to be able to take part in your journey.

Hi Jessica
Wow, finally having some real Southern Ocean sailing Jesse, but as a other bloggers have said, we do not wont to many storms. A nice steady 15-20 easterly's all the way would nice, but we know this will not happen.
Having the dolphin swimming along with you, through out the storm, would have a calming effect on you, I'm sure.
So Jessica, HAVE A FANTASTIC NEW YEAR AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2010.
I'm sure this one you will never forget.

Just wanted to drop the 'very best' ( as I promised somewhere above in this tome of comments) for 2010.

Yep.... way back to your west, or maybe way over to your east !!!..... ---Anyway, here on 151E, it's getting to the "out with the old and in with the new" time, fireworks and all that, a bit of a BBQ.... and prolly a few too many fermented grapejuices and talking loud 'til late. ~~ So, it's best that I offer my wishes for 2010 to you, now. :)))

Jesse---The most excellent sailing from now, around the 'left turn', and then the long legs home. .... Hey, be with you on _every_ splash !!!.... and really looking forward to being back in there somewhere in the Serried Rankers' mosh when you triumphantly take in the Opera House on your port side. :))

Happy New Year, Jesse.

A special poem that is so apt for you, Jessica.

"Sea-Fever"

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

By John Masefield (1878-1967).

Hey Jesse

With your new years day being after ours, how close to going around cape horn on January 1st will you be ?.

What a great memory if you were the only person of the worlds billions to be sailing around cape horn on new years day 2010.

You would have to be close to doing it so I'm realy looking forward to your next couple of blogs and track marks on google to see if it happens.

Until then have a great time with bringing in the new year and what more could you ask for than a bit of swell and wind to keep you busy.

I was thrilled to read that you had a dolphin guide on your path through the storm.

Isn't mother nature a wonderful thing when you go so far not seeing anything and the moment a storm pops up there's a dolphin to keep you company as you pass through it.

Talking about you having company on your voyage. you must have half the world following your progress.

They thought Ben Southall having the best job in the world on Hamilton Island was bringing Queensland good advertising. well he doesn't even come close to the interest there is for what your doing.

You make every Queenslander very proud that this State is your home and the attention you are bringing to this beautiful place. I hope all the bloggers are logging into tourism queensland http://www.tq.com.au/ for a look at the great place you live in.

Hey Jesse,

21:00 o'clock and plenty of Fireworks are going off here in Sydney. Theres a few clouds around,a full moon ,traffic is grit lock to Balmain ,car horns beeping and now 10 minutes later it's all over already.

I live high up in Rozelle, overlooking the Anzac bridge and the Sydney Harbour from the inner west and I am staying home tonight,I get lonely in crowds.

Next Fireworks will be at midnight.

So the Sun dictates when the New Year begins at various longitudes travelling at 900 nm per hour south of the equator,
above Tropic of capricorn latitude.

No good having Fireworks when there is
only 5 hours of night time near where you are,Jesse ! Never mind.

There will be plenty of Fireworks when you sail the Ella's Pink Lady home to Australia and Sydney ,Jessica !

But most of all congrats to you on a job well done for you were the one at the helm processing all the info and putting it into action.

Look, we all know it won't be the last time you encounter such extreme weather but you've proven to us and all the skeptics you have what it takes to overcome whatever 'mother nature' decides to throw at you. Cape Horn is almost within your grasp now, 1300nm and closing fast. Steady as she goes.

Tomorrow we usher in another year. A time for reflection perhaps. No time for such luxuries I would imagine for our intrepid sailor continuously battling high seas and stormy weather. What a year you've had and 2010 promises to be even bigger. Don't get caught up in the moment tho as there is still a wee way to go.

Happy new year to you Jesse, EPL and the crew, mum and Dad and family, all the support crew, grand parents Billie and Tom (nice to meet you )and the family of worldwide bloggers. May 2010 be full of prosperity and fulfilment for all.
May the winds guide you with safe speed around Cape Horn.

Captain Jessica -

I've been reading that human genes are closer to dolphin genes than to any land mammal. Guess that is why there are tons of stories about dophins helping and protecting humans. Next time a dolphin comes up alongside your yacht, play your radio a bit louder and talk to the dolphin. They are highly intelligent, and there is some speculation about them also being telepathic, believe it or not! I believe it, since there are too many occurances of dolphins assisting human beings, keeping them safe from sharks, staying with them in marginal conditions. What other creature would do this? Other than someone's own dog.

Chris - I like the name you suggested for the dolphin, but could we spell it with a 'Y' and an 'E' at the end? LOL.

Dear Jessica
One of your ardent supporters is my 98 year old father, Colin Black, who had his birthday last week.
I read every blog out to him on the phone as he is blind. He loves to hear how you are going and he prays for your safety every night.
