Wind, Waves, Action and Drama!

My quite sunny conditions ended with a bit of a bang, Ella's Pink Lady and I have been having a very interesting time out here. The wind had been expected to rise to a near gale, but none of the computers or forecasts picked that it would reach the 65knots that I recorded, before losing the wind instruments in a knockdown!

That much wind means some very big and nasty waves. To give you an idea of the conditions, they were similar to and possibly worse than those of the terrible 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. We experienced a total of 4 knockdowns, the second was the most severe with the mast being pushed 180 degrees in to the water. Actually pushed isn't the right word, it would be more accurate to say that Ella's Pink Lady was picked up, thrown down a wave, then forced under a mountain of breaking water and violently turned upside down.

With everything battened down and conditions far too dangerous to be on deck, there wasn't anything I could do but belt myself in and hold on. Under just the tiny storm jib, the big electric autopilot did an amazing job of holding us on course downwind, possibly or possibly not helped by my yells of encouragement! It was only the big rogue waves that hit at us at an angle (side on) that proved dangerous and caused the knockdowns.

The solid frame of the targa (the frame that supports the solar panels) is bent out of shape and warped (see pic below), which provides a pretty good idea of the force of the waves. Solid inch thick stainless steel tube doesn't exactly just bend in the breeze, so I think you could say that Ella's Pink Lady has proven herself to be a very tough little boat!

With my whole body clenched up holding on, various objects flying around the cabin and Ella's Pink Lady complaining loudly under the strain, it was impossible to know what damage there was on deck. It was a little hard at times to maintain my positive and rational thoughts policy, but overall I think I can say that the skipper held up us well as Ella's Pink Lady. It was certainly one of those times when you start questioning exactly why you're doing this, but at no point could I not answer my own question with a long list of reasons why the tough times like that aren't totally worth it!

So in the middle of all the drama, back at home Mum received just about the worst phone call possible from the Australian Rescue Coordination Center (RCC), telling her that one of my EPIRBs (emergency signaling devices) had been activated. One of the knockdowns had caused the automatic EPIRB mounted under the dodger to turn on without me knowing. Luckily I called in only a few minutes later before anyone could really start to panic. I was pretty annoyed at the stupid thing for going off and giving everyone such a scare!

We didn't come though completely un-scathed though, as there's plenty of minor damage, but luckily nothing bad enough to stop us. Actually I think it's a huge credit to our rigger David Lambourne, that the that mast is still standing and appears in perfect working condition. So other than the wonky looking targa, the starboard solar panel is all bent up and the windvane is now sitting on a bit of an angle, but amazingly and very luckily, it still works fine (go Parker!). There are also a few tears in the mainsail and one of the stanchions is bent in.

Down below, the cabin was a totally disaster zone, everything is wet or damp. The dunny (toilet) which fell apart, was in pieces spread from one end of the boat to the other, along with other equipment. The meth stove wont light, but will hopefully fire up when it dries out a little more.

After clearing up the worst of it and despite finally managing some good sleep, I still feel like a giant marshmallow. Physically, my arms and legs are all heavy and pathetic and of course I have a lovely collection of bruises! Mentally, I feel like I've aged a good 10 years, but I'm back to normal now and in good spirits as we approach the half way mark.

When the wind had finally calmed down, I was treated to a pretty incredible sunset and as I was clearing things up on deck, a couple of dolphins stopped by just as if they were checking that we were all OK.

I owe a huge thanks to Bruce, who was completely perfect, saying just the right things on the phone every time I called in and also to Bob who stayed up through the night to keep me updated on when the wind could be expected to ease.

I could go on forever, but better finish up as this has turned into a total novel and there's plenty still to do!
Jesse

Three cheers for you Jess!!! you have endured something that we can only imagine in our wildest dreams.

We will be putting you on our private Aust Day honors list, you are a true inspiration to us all.

We're glad you came through the battle of the day with only a few bumps and bruises, and not too much damage to ELP.

Mother Nature is good at testing our limitations. We are being tested at present by the cyclones
that can't seem to make up there mind what they want to do.
So, just like you, we are prepared for whatever comes our way.

We watched a Doco on ABC1 last night, presented by Nigel Marven..
he was showing the huge amount of wildlife that inhabit the Faulkland Ilands in the height of summer, and would you believe we got to see your BLACK & WHITE DOLPHINS.. didn't hear what they were called because we were just so excited to see what you had swimming beside you.. they were so beautiful!!!

Our prayers are with you every day!

Stay safe!!!

Hope you didn,t get knocked around to much during the gale, with all those waves lashing your boat, plus your solar panels obviously took a battering.
Ella's Pink Lady looks like a tough little boat from your great pics.
keep up the good sailing.

Psalm 76:6
At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.

Good evening, Jesse! I can't believe you were upside down! Well protected you have been. Well cared for. Not sheltered from adversity and challenge, but strengthened and guided through it, and protected. I am just amazed that, though bent or damaged, all seems to be working for you now. And, I can't believe that you were treated to a beautiful sunset when it was all over. Sort of like the rainbow after the storm. Marvelous.

Tonight I am praying for your rest and recovery, for good and steady progress, for your strength and ingenuity as you sort out things like your stove and any repairs, and of course for your family and support team at home, watching, listening, and sometimes worried.

God doesn't spare us from all adversity, sometimes allows us to face it, and we are always strengthened by it. You may not have smooth sailing from here, but you are stronger, every day more ready. I just can't imagine what lies ahead for you in life -- you are being readied for something outstanding I predict. Seek His will and His pleasure. Blessings to you as you rest up.

Hi Jessica
Congratulations for completing 100 days at sea. I hope by now you have sorted out the “disaster zone” in your cabin, and that the metho stove has dried out and is now operational. The dunny – well I suppose they are quite simply not designed to be turned upside down. I found your description of it “in pieces spread from one end of the cabin to the other” highly amusing as I could easily envisage the scene, and I wondered whether you laughed or cried at the sight of it in bits.

For blogger “bengt” –
You have done an excellent illustration of what is termed “pitchpoling”, which is what happens when the boat goes transom over bow. In a knockdown the boat is rolled over sideways, rotating on an imaginary axis along its length. Have another go drawing the hull on its side with the mast laying horizontal.

Jessica, I hope you’ve been able to get all the important equipment on Ella’s Pink Lady ready for anything by now. Stay confident and positive. We know you can do whatever it takes

I like the way you philosophise about the sailing...you accept the bad so that you can really enjoy the good.

Good luck and smooth sailing.

I hope today is much better conditions to assist in your tidy up, once things are back in order you will feel good again. Keep smiling, the dolphins are your guides, the way you 'step up to the mark' is very inspiring indeed. Hang on girl - one hand for you, one for EPL. GO JESS AND EPL - YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY HOME NOW...

To other bloggers: Im going to make the couple of plane flights to Sydney to be one of the thousands watching her arrive home and thought it would be nice to meet up with other bloggers who are planning to do the same - it would be quite a reunion !!! We could even all have lunch or a drink together to celebrate... just some food for thought. My email is lasolana@mackay.net.au if anyone wishes to make arrangements closer to the time. Imagine if the 'star of the show' Captain Jessica could join us for 5 mins to say Hi.

Hello Captain Watson!
(No doubt you will be promoted Commodore as soon as you will be back)

Reading your blog again, thinking again of what you lived, makes no change. Heartbeats are irregular, guts are twisting, breath is loud. Just relieved. But still in a kind of shock state.
We are probably in need of a new blog, telling us what you did to tidy and repair EPL, what you had for lunch, and some daily plain details, so we can get our heads out of the stormy bucket we dived in yesterday.

We saw on the map that you progressed well, and still northwards, that sounds good as the storms don't seem to go frequently up there. It will be time to head South again when you will be closer to Africa. And it is a little bit north that you will find the westerly currents that will give some extra speed to the brave Ella's Pink Lady.

Everyone here -aware of your journey- consider you as a true heroin. Of course, some people think you are young or are afraid for you, but once they have seen your blog, their opinion changes and they say they wouldn't dare to do it themselves, but they admire you.

I can believe you feel older after these hellish hours. You were mature already; now you are a full adult.
Many things to learn, certainly, about culture or science or various knowledges -just like anyone-, but about human values, effort and courage, life and death, will and priorities, you are ready.

You make us dream, you change our lives, you set new standards, you show us th example.
Wow, what a teacher, what a global coach you are!
And though, always natural, gracious and funny.

Later this year, one day, some guy will arrive in Sydney and find the whole city wearing pink flags, the streets crowded, mostly near the harbour.
He will ask: What's on?
And dozens of people around will answer: Watson!

Cheers, Captain. The legend is carried by a tough lovely pink boat. What an odyssey!

Jesse,
If you are in a similar situation in the future, you might want to consider what "To See the Sea" recommended in terms of deploying the series drogue before a storm. He is a NZ sailor with much experience. I know you didn't think this storm would be as powerful as it was, but that is the nature of storms. They are unpredictable things. Once you decided your strategy, you did the right thing , because how could you go out in the raging storm and operate? You were committed at that point. As a low passed there is always a chance that a cross sea will be set up. This is what they believed caused the confused seas in the Fastnet tragedy. The yachts that were undamaged either hove to or manuevered around the breaking waves. Running at night as you were, even if you could manuever, you wouldn't be able to see the waves coming from the side. Better to lie to the drogue. You are lucky that you didn't lose the mast.

I hope all your repairs are coming along.I wonder about your Radar reflector and radome, and AIS. I also wonder if exposure to saltwater when you were turtled will cause issues with your electrical panels.
I'm sure the porcelin bowl of your dunny is in pieces. Where's that pink bucket? Brilliant to store the extra diesel reserve in the cabin table. Any jerry cans on deck would be long gone or turned into missiles. All that preparstion payed off. Looks like your Dad was trying to make Pink Lady like one of those surf rescue boats that operate upside down.
You might think it a bit presumptous that I am offering advice to a brave Captain with so many miles to her credit, but I knew before you left it would come to this at some point, because it always does with those who cruise so far and wide. I am just trying to do what I can to help in any way I can.

Sail on brave Jesse, and may you arrive safely back home to your family and friends!

You are amazingly fearless!
Richard W

PS I posted a comment on that newspaper that keeps showing the "broken mast" picture and requested that they change it to a picture that better represents what an exceptional sailor you are.

Hiya Jesse,

My original comments did not come through, or I did not post properly...mmmm..trust me. I will thank you for your amazing informative blog. It was quite shocking/amazing.

So glad you have come out the other side with such a positive attitude. Fancy being flipped on your dodger, (upside down) then EPL popped back up on her keel (wheels), minus her dunny ... Can't blame her though, would have been an awful shock being turned on her head like that. (really can’t grasp it, as much as I try, scary)

Luckily she had you to see her through and go Parker...!! You are a brave girl Jesse.

You know what I like about Dolphins, they are always smiling. So glad they said gidday and gave you a grin after your huge ordeal. When reading your blog, I like everyone freaked a fair bit. My kindest regards to shore crew, Bruce, Bob and special hugs for your family. Big hugs to you, take care Jesse. Take care of those nasty bruises. I know I said to you way early, that you are going to collect wonderful memories, well this one goes into the basket of "conquered" memories. Let's try not to collect any more of them. That is ample sufficiency, and yes you could write a novel..and I can't wait. I join you in aging 10 years and I can’t afford to!! You take extreme sailing to a whole new level. Go you good thing…!! What an exciting ride! And to know that the systems all worked as designed must reassure you that you can safely finish this voyage. You must know that you have a great story once ashore of four knockdowns in a single night’s storm. I also feel that, unlike some of your readers, you realize the four knockdowns are not a problem—we know the outcome. It’s what’s ahead that holds any dangers on your trip, and I doubt that complacency is in your makeup, so I know you will sail away from the past, prepared for the future.

As I read your tale, I thought of those who provided you protection: men and women who built the boat; sponsors that made possible purchase of reliable systems; each person who came in contact with materials that went into Ella’s Pink Lady; designers and engineers that made seaworthy systems, and the workers who assembled the systems; your parents for raising you to be your own self, who let go when you were ready. There is nothing to take from you for your incredible performance to date, but thanks go to hundreds who put their labor into quality materials, many without knowing that a sixteen year-old woman would use them to benefit us all by showing the best that we can achieve.

Your strength and courage should remind all that humans are tough and adaptable, and that we too often underestimate the ability of our ‘children’. Thank you for sharing with us. Thank you for inspiring us.

Jessica, thank you so much for your update, it has taken me this long to calm down after reading those horrendous conditions that you were faced with - like all fellow bloggers, I was breathless and very teary by the end of it all.

Eight hours of pounding - I cannot begin to imagine what that must have been like, talk about a never ending saga..... The EPIRB segment was so emotional, I still get teary everytime I think of your dear parents getting THAT call, like any parents who get that knock on the door from the Military or Police, that is something every parent dreads - my thoughts to those who have had that happen to them....x

I naturally hope, like everyone else, that the worst is over, but you know our own waters can be very fiesty at times. You and your fantastic EPL have proven your ability and I have faith that you can handle any situation, I just hope you are not tested too much more, if at all.

Enjoy your nice weather and wonderful dolphin companions, I am sure all the prayers from around the world are working. With us all being on different time zones, it is 24/7 prayer time, and you deserve all the attention given.

You are always in our hearts and prayers, along with everyone in Haiti at the moment, both residents and helpers.

Hope you get your little boat ship shape and are comfortable again for the next leg........x

Hi Jess,

I go away for the last 2 days and miss all the excitement. Jokes aside, you are one incredibly strong person.

Its situations like these that either get the best or the worst out of any ordinary person. So, here you are, not just getting the best out of yourself but manifesting your true skills and ability to transcend any boundaries that conventional wisdom may have put in place. In plain English, its called "fire in the belly" or in a word, "passion".

I love the way you rationalise your thoughts. You constantly remind yourself of the bigger picture and that helps you deal with the short term challenges.

Another major take-away from this most recent challenge is how well your shore crew supported you. Congratulations to all of them for helping you get through this one. What a team !

Well Jess, get some tucker into your belly and rest up ! I'm sure the cleanup job will take a bit of time but you'll adapt. Hope the dunny is not too worse for the wear !

Lastly, Ella's Pink Lady is an incredible boat ! What a design ! What a build !

Halfway point.....here she comes !

A 180 degree knockdown! Wow! Chichester only had a 140 degree (wine stains on the cabin ceiling). If it had been David Lewis (Ice Bird and first solo to Antarctica), he would have been cutting away the broken mast and rigging and wondering how he could jury-rig the boat! You’re up there with the sailing legends, Jess! Mind you, David Lewis was described as “getting into trouble through haste and neglect, then, with near superhuman courage and seamanship, fighting his way out of it.”
That could never apply to you and your shore team, Jess, except for the superhuman courage and seamanship, that is!
Great planning and preparation, especially staying the mast against lateral forces in a knockdown, must have seen you through the storm safely.
If you can survive those conditions, you can survive pretty well anything.
Hope you have calmer weather over the next few days to clean up and recover.
Stay safe. Tony, Brisbane

Hi Jessica I am still thinking of the awful storm and what you had to endure but one thing to come out of it is that you have shown the world just how good a sailor you really are....you had a situation that would have put the fear into most but you battened down and trusted in EPL and both of your got through.....I just admire you so very much...you have courage beyond that of most 16yr old's.....what a welcome you are going to have back in Sydney and again in Bisbane....just saw on tv today that another 16 year old from US is also going to sail around the world and I believe she is 5 month younger than you Jesse.....but you have the distinction of being the very first in your age group to do this trip.....I guess someone had to try and take the record from you....still you were first and if you had not done it perhaps this other lass would not have tried....I wish her the very best of luck as the task both of you have taken on is a very challenging one.....now3 you really are homeward bound so God speed and safe journey.......hugs

Thank you, Bruce, Andrew and the shore team, for the much welcome updated news!
That was a nightmare storm for Jessica, for all of you, for all of us.

In the ancient times, it happened to have the sea whipped when it misbehaved. I considered going to Brittany to give the Atlantic a good flogging, but after all, maybe it would be wiser to wait for EPL to have rounded Africa's southern capes.

You can all be proud of Jesse for this first half she handled brilliantly, and you have (preparation before, support during) almost as much credit as her.

Being ahead of the planned schedule is only good news, lowering the pressure on the length of the trip and the quantities of supplies.

At 100 nm per day, she spared 15 days on the first half-journey; if she does the same on the second half, her trip will have been 7 month long instead of 8; then she might arrive on May 18th, precisely for her birthday! That would be such a wonderful coincidence!!! What a party in sight! Maybe it is only a 0.05 probability, but it is right in the middle of the possibilities range!

Thank you, Bob, for trying to keep Jessica out of the storms streets. We know she can manage and overcome any now, but she deserves some peaceful navigation for a while. At least, it would look normal to let her bruises heal before givng her new ones. Altogether, she got enough of that kind of presents! She has a big party (or several) planned for May, and she must be in perfect shape for then.
Even if she can rely on Ella Baché's products.
Just imagine the Star appearing with a blue eye and a big band aid on a cheek (TY Sally of Melbourne, too cute!)...

Captain Jesse, you are fantastic!

Quite an experience, very frightening to be strapped into a seat below with no hand on the tiller, had the mechanical and electrical systems been wrecked....
I agree with 'Richard in Maryland', a drogue would help the steerage systems and at least if they were knocked out would be some form of control from broaching and worse.
For interested parties on the subject of broaching read;

Hi Jesse,

waves to knock a steel frame, drama, action and just one small person in the midst of it all ... that's breathtaking, real big cinema! And like everybody else, I'm SO glad you managed to get through all of this still in a good spirit!

And yet, there's one thing we all should consider. There's nothing to be achieved on earth without a certain amount of risk, and the real face of the risk we can only see when the wind really blows. That's probably the most disturbing thought for all of us grown ups following your voyage: Where freedom is, there's also danger, and people like me sitting in an office everyday have traded a lot of freedom in return of living without many personal risks. Wishing you all the good for your journey ... which I certainly do ... for me also means to accept all those risks you're taking, not as an additional thrill, but as the sure sign of the real freedom you're claiming for yourself!

Well, enough now of that philosophy - and good, friendly winds for your second half!

Well we were all waiting for "the big one" and man did you get it. That's a whole lot of knockdowns. Everyone is so impressed with your composure as well as the strength of Ella's Pink Lady. You're teaching lotsa people what really matters Jesse! Yes!

gustav said...

Wow Jessica,

I got scared for you just reading your report and I don't usually get easily spooked.Four knockdowns,it's a wonder Ella's Pink Lady is still with a mast, the force of that gale was almost too much and this really was a close call.

I always thought that Cape Horn was only ever the halfway point and there would be plenty of challenges ahead until you and EPL are safely home in Sydney.

The Atlantic Ocean can be every bit as tough and challenging as the South Pacific and after all you are sailing in "Bass-Straight latitudes" where cold fronts from the polar region clash with warmer fronts from the tropics and often create opposing and very challenging weather conditions very quickly. We had 41 degrees yesterday in Sydney with the wind changing a lot from north to south.

Jessica,I hope you eat and drink well and that you can get some rest and some sleep after this ordeal, because the main thing is to stay strong and keep on top of things.Never mind the EPIRB, it was doing what it was designed to do and
I am actually glad it went off.

You managed this powerful gale force conditions very well, you did the best you could do in a very challenging and serious situation.Check Ella's Pink Lady over,to make sure everything is ok with your equipment and then have a good rest, make sure you eat and drink well, slow down a bit, keep cool and focus on the next task ahead.

Keep a cool head and take things slowly.
Stay focused and plan ahead step by step .Go through your check list that will help you put your mind at ease.

Next point for Ella's Pink Lady is Cape of good Hope in South Africa,I reckon roughly about 3600nm away or 36 days sailing East.I pencilled in ETA for good hope first of March 2010.

We all are thinking of you Jessica, what you are doing is amazing, but I admit this was the first time i got pretty scared for you.

keep cool and focused, take good care of yourself and Ella's Pink Lady and keep safe.Make sure you reset those EPIRB's.
They could safe your Life.

Sending you my best wishes and lots of love, knowing that you Jessica and Ella's Pink Lady will come back home safely.

Hiya Jesse,

100 Days & 1/2 Way, You are on your way home Jesse!!

Just rec'd a much appreciated update from our adopted Shore Crew, they said there may be another low pressure system in next 24hours, but you should miss this one ??..... They also said,

"This storm has showed Jessica to have all the seamanship skills to get through most things that the sea can throw at her and EPL”.

No truer word spoken.
Amen to that.

I have no idea why I am telling you this, when you can read it yourself and like you already knew anyhow.... (I also drink peroxide, so that makes me blonde on the inside as well)

Low Pressure systems, hmmpff !! They just take your dunny on the very rare occasion…

They are called Windydunnygrabber Gales, typical aussie name, I am sure you have heard of it, that won't happen now for another 100 years.

Take care Jesse, turn the music up, lets chat soon. Cheers Paula

It's just gone Midnight, well its actually 1:14 as I type, here in Melbourne Town, It's Australia Day! maybe you can take a day off Jesse...100 days...good onya!...yep take the day off!

To Bob Sammamish WA USA (RawCityBob),
A lovely post acknowledging everybody, and particularly the fact that all this expertise culminating to the success of one 16 year old girl at sea...an excellent perspective.

Also to Mary of Maine....I'm don't go to Church but nor do I profess to believe in any kind of faith, but to the follow who writes the passages from the Bible, the Psalms, I agree his words have always carried a kindness a sense of care together with a strength to keep Jesse going...and there is nothing wrong with that!

Jesse I hope all is ok with you right now, I know there is more rough stuff out there as I type, you occupy so much of my thoughts these days!

P.S. I'm certainly in for that Bloggers get together up in Sydney but its going to be a timing thing as to whether I can make it to Sydney or not....

P.S.S ABC774 here in Melbourne had you across most of there bulletins today, hearing Rogar and Andrew speaking...it was good to finally hear something about you on the radio, I usually insistently stop what I'm doing to listen...

Hello Jessica!

I’m so glad you came through that violent storm successfully. I can’t imagine how terribly it was. I have started to worry about you since the storm had been announced. When I read about “knockdowns” I thought how hard it was to stand these things. I think your family was very scared when they received the call from the rescue centre.

I hope you will continue your voyage without terrible situations like this. I think about you every day and read your website to know how you are there in the middle of the ocean.

You are a courageous girl. You must have to be a very skilled person to do that. I can hardly believe that those things can do a 16 years old girl! Go on!

Just wanted to wish you a happy Australia Day. In honor of you, I will celebrate with a bit of little chocolate. Actually a lot of chocolate. And congratulations on hitting 100 days and the half way point. You’re on your way home now.To the shore crew, thanks so much for the update. I hope you and all of the blogger family have a very festive Australia Day. I wish I was there to join in the celebration, but I will be thinking of you.

And Jess, no more knock downs please. It’s too hard on our nerves. Parker says to keep his hind end in the water and his head in the air. We are all just very concerned for your safety more than anything, Jessica.

I wanted to ask you a question, I am from the states and was really annoyed that they have on t.v about a girl from cali that is attempting the same journey as you saying she will be the youngest @16to do this. Richie says, “I can believe you feel older after these hellish hours. You were mature already; now you are a full adult.
Many things to learn, certainly, about culture or science or various knowledges -just like anyone-, but about human values, effort and courage, life and death, will and priorities, you are ready.”

I say, DITTO!

@ Parker (A.K.A. “wind vane”) (emphasis on wind)

Parker, please forgive the many misguided references to Jess yelling at you; when she clearly establishes that she was navigating by electric auto pilot during the gale.
A small few of us are clearly missing out on all of the wonderful information specified throughout Jessica’s Blog by not taking the necessary time to read, comprehend and enjoy it all. Hint, hint.

i.e. “the big electric autopilot did an amazing job of holding us on course downwind, possibly or possibly not helped by my yells of encouragement!”

To the misguided,
Good ol’ Parker is a wind activated steering apparatus that uses no electricity to operate. Parker, who does a wonderful job almost all of the time, has his limitations (don’t we all...)
Gargantuan waves can effectively block wind from reaching Parker when EPL is in a trough (depression) between waves; essentially blinding Parker, and possibly causing him to act erratically. Situations like this call for the use of the electric auto pilot(s) (who shall remain nameless.)

ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Hi Jessica,
I just went over all the information that you had posted, and I still find it amazing that you went through hell and still have the presence of mind to take control of the situation and start repair work immediately. I hope that you’ll be able to repair everything that you can handle. I realize that nothing can be done with the targa frame, it would take a hydraulic press to straighten that out. Will you be able to sew the mainsail before the tears get worse? Do you have a repair kit onboard for that?

Kudo’s to Bruce and Bob, sticking right there with you, talking to you and guiding you, and giving you plenty of moral support. Great team.

You never fail to amaze me with your honesty and details when explaining the various situations. We like to know exactly what you’re going through. That may sound sadistic but it is not I assure you.
I imagine every muscle in your body is aching from all the stress and strain that you went through getting tossed around. I’m just glad that nothing is broken or that you don’t have any severe cuts.
It would be nice if you got some warm sunny weather where you could soak up some heat from the sun, depending on your weather conditions.
I hope the weather turns in your favor and settles down so you can get ELP straightened out with her needed repairs, be careful working.
Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, and the scallywags too.

Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.

Lyrics to Waltzing Matilda :

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong
Up got the swaggie and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Down came the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred
Up came the troopers One Two Three
Who's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
Who's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me.

Up got the swaggie and jumped into the billabong
You'll never catch me alive said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong

Two Irishmen were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A blonde walks by and asked them what they were doing. Paddy replied, "We're supposed to be finding the bludy height of this flagpole, but we don't have a bluudy ladder." The blonde took out an adjustable spanner from her bag, loosened a few bolts and laid the flagpole down. She got a tape measure out of her pocket, took a few measurements, and announced that it was 6.124 meters.

Then, she walked off. Mick said to Paddy, "Isn't that just like a blonde! We need the bludy height and she gives us the bludy length."
