Wind, Waves, Action and Drama!

My quite sunny conditions ended with a bit of a bang, Ella's Pink Lady and I have been having a very interesting time out here. The wind had been expected to rise to a near gale, but none of the computers or forecasts picked that it would reach the 65knots that I recorded, before losing the wind instruments in a knockdown!

That much wind means some very big and nasty waves. To give you an idea of the conditions, they were similar to and possibly worse than those of the terrible 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. We experienced a total of 4 knockdowns, the second was the most severe with the mast being pushed 180 degrees in to the water. Actually pushed isn't the right word, it would be more accurate to say that Ella's Pink Lady was picked up, thrown down a wave, then forced under a mountain of breaking water and violently turned upside down.

With everything battened down and conditions far too dangerous to be on deck, there wasn't anything I could do but belt myself in and hold on. Under just the tiny storm jib, the big electric autopilot did an amazing job of holding us on course downwind, possibly or possibly not helped by my yells of encouragement! It was only the big rogue waves that hit at us at an angle (side on) that proved dangerous and caused the knockdowns.

The solid frame of the targa (the frame that supports the solar panels) is bent out of shape and warped (see pic below), which provides a pretty good idea of the force of the waves. Solid inch thick stainless steel tube doesn't exactly just bend in the breeze, so I think you could say that Ella's Pink Lady has proven herself to be a very tough little boat!

With my whole body clenched up holding on, various objects flying around the cabin and Ella's Pink Lady complaining loudly under the strain, it was impossible to know what damage there was on deck. It was a little hard at times to maintain my positive and rational thoughts policy, but overall I think I can say that the skipper held up us well as Ella's Pink Lady. It was certainly one of those times when you start questioning exactly why you're doing this, but at no point could I not answer my own question with a long list of reasons why the tough times like that aren't totally worth it!

So in the middle of all the drama, back at home Mum received just about the worst phone call possible from the Australian Rescue Coordination Center (RCC), telling her that one of my EPIRBs (emergency signaling devices) had been activated. One of the knockdowns had caused the automatic EPIRB mounted under the dodger to turn on without me knowing. Luckily I called in only a few minutes later before anyone could really start to panic. I was pretty annoyed at the stupid thing for going off and giving everyone such a scare!

We didn't come though completely un-scathed though, as there's plenty of minor damage, but luckily nothing bad enough to stop us. Actually I think it's a huge credit to our rigger David Lambourne, that the that mast is still standing and appears in perfect working condition. So other than the wonky looking targa, the starboard solar panel is all bent up and the windvane is now sitting on a bit of an angle, but amazingly and very luckily, it still works fine (go Parker!). There are also a few tears in the mainsail and one of the stanchions is bent in.

Down below, the cabin was a totally disaster zone, everything is wet or damp. The dunny (toilet) which fell apart, was in pieces spread from one end of the boat to the other, along with other equipment. The meth stove wont light, but will hopefully fire up when it dries out a little more.

After clearing up the worst of it and despite finally managing some good sleep, I still feel like a giant marshmallow. Physically, my arms and legs are all heavy and pathetic and of course I have a lovely collection of bruises! Mentally, I feel like I've aged a good 10 years, but I'm back to normal now and in good spirits as we approach the half way mark.

When the wind had finally calmed down, I was treated to a pretty incredible sunset and as I was clearing things up on deck, a couple of dolphins stopped by just as if they were checking that we were all OK.

I owe a huge thanks to Bruce, who was completely perfect, saying just the right things on the phone every time I called in and also to Bob who stayed up through the night to keep me updated on when the wind could be expected to ease.

I could go on forever, but better finish up as this has turned into a total novel and there's plenty still to do!
Jesse

I knew there was some reason to pray a bit longer about your past few days. More than usual. I am so glad to hear you are okay. I pray your instruments can be repaired or restored or some equivalent will meet the need. Thankfully your satcom is on tight..Do you lash your computer in? I have a pedistal in my truck for a laptop but it chatters even on dirt roads so..can't imagine what your equipment is going through. Not to mention your physical equipment. Nurse those bruises..and do rest..Praise the Lord you are safe and held in His hands as you cruise through the natural forces of this globe. Peace Be Still..

In those situations, all you can do is prep the boat, strap in, hold on and pray.
Riding out 4 knockdowns is a pretty impressive feat for you and EPL.
I guess this is where you thank your lucky stars and team that you chose a tried and proven boat for your journey.
Big congratulations to you for prepping the boat properly for the conditions at sea. Also to your land crew who obviously got EPL dialed in tight before you left.
Time now for a snooze, and then let the cleanup and dry-out begin!
hopefully you'll get a few calm days to complete these tasks and make sure everything is shipshape for the next challenge.
Keep up the good work sailor! You are making us all proud.

Fair winds and following seas (no more rogue waves!)

So the elements can bend one inch thick steel but not your resolve. Great stuff!

Your account reads like a text book on how a competent, brave and, above all, mature person would handle and conceptualise such as life threatening experience. And you're only 16!

As I and others have previously said, you are already a success, even a legend, whether or not you break any record (of course we all assume you will - it just seems so right for you).

In fact, I think your experiences at sea should be credited in the calculation of you OP score, in recognition of your intelligence, resourcefulness and fortitutde, as study will seem such a trifle to you after all you accomplishments. What a bureaucratic conunrum that would create for Education Qld hey!

Congratulations to you and your dedicated support team. They must be so proud of you.

Every blessing for the second half of the adventure. I hope it will be as wonderful as the first.

A true testament to the S&S 34 and Jessica Watson. One just as tough as the other.

You and your team were obviously well prepared and did a great job making sure that captain and boat could handle an event like this. Your true resolve will be in cleaning up and repairing what you can; you know what to do.

Here's to Jessica, 4 knockdowns and still making forward progress; CHEERS!

Hi Jess

I've already left a comment, but I was wondering about a few things.

Can you reset the EPIRB? And did you have to call anyone to tell them you were OK?

If Parker had failed, is there a way that you could strap yourself in by the tiller and steer by hand?

If your mum and dad would like to give their take on this whole ordeal I think everyone would love to read it (maybe in 'latest news')

Stay safe
And as always, praying for your safe return

ps. If anyone from S&S is following this blog, give yourselves a big pat on the back--you guys build a hell of a boat!

Poor little EPIRB,

Jess doesn’t really think your stupid. I know, she was inside and you were outside in the thick of it all. I know she didn’t see that gargantuan wave coming at you! I can just here you now…

“Whooooooooow, not good, NOT GOOD! Under water! Upside down! Must activte, MUST ACTIVATE! Gotta save Jess. Gotta save Jess! Cough cough, sputter sputter… HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!”

So Jess don’t be so hard on the poor little guy. He did a really great job and we all would rather him call out false alarms just to be sure. I’m sure Mom and Dad and Team Jessica feel the same way. No harm, no foul.

Anyway, what a great piece of mind to verify that the system works so well!

Great job EPIRB!

Jessica, so happy you were not injured in your knockdowns. You have an amazing spirit. I posted the below post back in June and am re-posting. You tried "running off" with the big seas, and now it's time to try hoving to.

Capt. Voss, Lynn and Larry Pardey, and many many others have already tested these storm tactics for you. I have also used them in 60 knotts and 12 metre seas off Oregon. No knockdowns.

Jessica, So excited for your voyage. You go girl, you can do it. One thing I am concerned for you though. I am sure you have good offshore sailors advising you, but please get a parachute anchor and practice "hoving to" with it before you take off. As Pete Goss on the "Spirit of Mystery" recently demonstrated again, running off downwind in big seas most often results in knockdown. Please hang out with and read some of Lyn and Larry Pardey's storm tactics. Two elderly sailors around cape horn the wrong way in their enginless 30' wooden boat. They are nice people in NZ and you would enjoy meeting them. Hove to, and be safe please when the waves start breaking. Also, that windvane is going to be your best friend. Name her and use her all the time.

Good sailing,

Dearest Jess,

Just wanted to say a quick "Hi!" again...am thinking of you and hope you've been able to manage some sleep, some good food and some repairs to your dunny and more.

I remember that one of your bloggers had talked, months ago, about how fierce the ocean storms can be as the currents and other natural forces build in the absence of land. I had no idea that the southern Atlantic waters would present such violent extremes, even more so than Cape Horn waters.

Reading my fellow blog posters' letters has brought more tears to my eyes, especially Barry's. Tony L. your letters were great, too. John Alicante, I'm glad you're seeking adventure and will be returning to your OZ homeland. I wish you all the best.

Laura, Newport, CA, take your time when you're ready to post a letter. You need to make sure that the word verification has gone through. Sometimes when there's heavy blogging traffic, the w.v. doesn't "take". Also, after you enter "publish", look at the top of the page to make sure the sentence saying "your post has been saved" is visible. Otherwise, go back and check your settings and the w.v. Good luck.

Jessica, you are in my thoughts and prayers as ever, well, even MORE THAN EVER, if that's possible!! I'm concerned about the battering that Pink Lady took with four knockdowns, hoping that her integrity has not been compromised.

You GO GIRL. I have tremendous faith in you and your abilities.

Well, you made it through and perhaps now understand why not everyone is so enamored by your adventure. No risk no fun has been my motto, so on that regard I'm on your side. Step back and be thankful that the ELB worked because there's no telling what lies before you the next three months. Better a short term scare than long term dread. I saw a documentary of a guy who hung out underneath his capsized boat for a week in his poopie suit because his boat was not only knocked down but the keel and masts broke. "Houston (Murwilumbah), we've got a problem..."
Jess, your description doesn't sound too good. EPL is an Australian registered vessel and you have to comply to Australian Laws. As you are living full time on this boat,it is your current Place of Residence and has to match Council Occupancy Laws as well as Health Department Regulations, meaning you need a working kitchen and dunny. How bad is the damage to the loo ? Considering the closeness to the Food preparation area, you cannot improvise on that. If you can't fix it, it would mean either getting a new Porta Potty dropped on bord or simply dropping into the nearest port for picking one up. Simply...
This would mean the end of the non-stop, unassisted part of the trip. We cannot let this happen. So Jess and Support crew, let's put our thinking caps on and ponder on a solution. It might be embarrassing, therefore send photos first to HQ for assessment, but otherwise it will be necessary to publish the mess, so anyone out here can help you sailing on.
And 180 deg. means hitting the roof at freeway speeds. Bummer, had enough fun for a while ?
Ready for some insanity streaks ? Have you tested the 12V hairdryer yet...[no dunny, but a working blower, OMG]?

Hi Jessica,
Really happy to hear everything went well. Guess you are prepared for situatons like this, but you never really know what the wind is able to do. As I am a radio amateur I have antennas on the roof at the tall block of flats where I live. The first years I had them there I was often amazed of the strength of the wind. I have learnt a lot during the years and relly experience is very useful. To be able to know how much wind the material can handle without any trouble. Here in the south of Sweden we have cold weather, around minus 5 C and snow on the ground. This winter is a bit colder than usual. This is all for now and wishing you good luck. Best wishes from Bo, Sweden

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
I thoroughly enjoyed your latest entry and sensed your excitement in every detail...thankyou!
I'm completely gobsmacked at the severity of the conditions you had to endure. You were so unlucky to cop a series of rogue waves as you did, without which you could've been spared the knockdowns. I can only imagine how scary it must have been for you, especially during the moment EPL was flipped over and throughout the entire time you spent upside down. All that water that must have gushed through the cabin in the process must have been horrendous.
What an absolutely fantastic boat Ella's Pink Lady is...beautiful in her design and impressive in her performance...very impressive indeed! I was thinking a lot about your mast more than anything else and to be honest, I was really worried about it. Needless to say, I was very relieved and equally impressed to hear that it held up well. Onya, David Lambourne! Sorry about your head 'though, shame about that, huh? But sounds like it was pretty dodgy to begin with for it to have ended up in pieces all over the place like you said...oh well, worse things could have happened so count your lucky stars I guess, huh? :-))
Your poor mum...fancy that hey? A call from the RCC no less! What she must have felt and what must have gone through her head in those few moments of uncertainty would have sent her stress meter off the charts. Your poor dad must have been beside himself, poor thing but hey, it works!!!
Anyway Jess, what can I say to you that hasn't already been said? Well done you and EPL for getting through the worst experience you've had since you left and surfaced relatively un-scathed. I don't think anyone should ever doubt you again...you are a superstar and should be very proud of yourself.
I hope you get a chance to catch up on all the sleep you need and also eat and drink well. A good feed of fresh fish would come in handy right about now so good luck with that.
May your bruises and aches 'n pains heal well so that you can get right back into the swing of things in not time. Above all I hope you continue to enjoy yourself and make the most of each and every moment you have out there because time is flying and you'll be back home again before you know it.
Take good care of yourself, stay safe and bye for now...(Aunty) Sam XX Once again...WELL DONE!!!

Jessica-

Have been checking in on your little adventure once or twice a week from the outset, but never left a comment before. Being a Taurean, I have a close connection with Mother Earth. As you rounded the Cape, I knew she'd been incredibly kind to you so far and in all probability would treat you to some extreme event to fully test your preparedness and resolve.

Having been in a few addrenalin rush situations myself (though none of which quite compare to being fully inverted while strapped to the inside of a sailboat and being slammed down that way), I find it amazing how time seems to slow down during those events. The quantity of information your brain processes in those moments is quite amazing. Knowing that you planned, prepared, and have anticipated for an event like this should have helped your brain and body to remain in a calmer state than otherwise would have happened.

With that said....Holy Crap...what an incredible ride! ...wish I would have been there to experience it! I guess the extreme rides at amusement parks just lost any of their appeal for you, huh?

Events such as this only make you stronger, which is good....but here's to hoping that this is the worst you will see. If your luck holds, the minor damage you have sustained will stay that way....only minor.

Hoping for your safe return to Sydney.

Well Jesse, you've certainly had the best test of your gear and yourself! You and Ella's Pink Lady are obviously made of the right stuff.
You are doing so incredibly well under such tough conditions!

I'm so happy to know you are okay and dealing with everything. Hope there are no more knockdowns now and that you get home soon. And I'm glad the dolphins are still keeping an eye on you.

You are incredible, Jesse. Hang in there - almost half way there now.

Outstanding Jesse, bravo on riding the storm out. I guess after all the talk about the Pacific and the Southern Oceans, the Atlantic didn't want to go unnoticed. We're glad to hear all's well. The "after" pics show a pretty calm sea. The go as quickly as they arrive.

Well you certainly have raised the bar for your threshold of fear! I would venture to say that you probably will think every challenging condition you face from now on will seem almost not note worthy after the night terror you endured.

We are all so thankful for the great outcome. We can't imagine the condition. There is no way for any of us to fully appreciate the terror.

What a phenomenal experience!

We are asked daily for up dates about "Jess" and your progress. I wish you could hear the comments of utter amazement we hear when we relate your latest escapades. "Unbelievable" is the word of the day.

We are thankful for your team and the work they do for you, they are awesome! There is no doubt you are the perfect Sailor for this challenge.

I feel scared just by reading your report, can't really imagine how that felt like.
Seems like Pink Lady did a very good job to bring you through that strom and maybe your guardian angel has done a well job too. ;)

Go on jess, and hopefully a bit less dramatic for the rest of your voyage.

Hi Jessica;
Can't leave you for a day,was on a site and a buddy in my team told me of your wild storm you where in.
I could not wait to get back to base camp and pull up your update,I am overwhelmed with joy you made it threw, though a little battered.
You are a true inspiration to us all,and an inner strength that will keep you focused. As for ''Pink Lady'' she truly showed her colors for you I AM SO PROUD OF YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE CREW[ LAND AND SEA].
See from the pictures you are little banned up,but I know it is a hurdle you will right.
Your ''dolphins'' are watching over you,a gift from God on your adventure.
Remember, you are keeping that promise to me young lady of much success in your journey.
God has his eyes upon you and you are coming out stronger than anyone will ever know.
You STAY FOCUSED,BE POSITIVE,a day at a time.
WE had a good day here,we saved another, hard to believe that the human spirit is so strong under these horrific scenes,we continue to keep our hopes up,but we know it will soon be a recovery mission. The Haitian people are so so strong,I see it in the kids eyes each day.
I continue to have my little lady with me daily, yet to locate her relatives, but her smile brightens my day,the world is here and I have faith we are making a difference.
To my ''world family'',if you haven't GIVEN,PLEASE DO,we need all the help right now.
Jessica,I so admire you and can only wish you a recovery and may God continue to keep you safe.
Hi to all, hope to be back home someday, but I have people to care for right now and God willing help this country rebuild.
You stay safe young lady, again I am SO SO PROUD OF YOU and to be part of this journey with you makes even more special.

Dear Jessica,

you deprived me of sleep last night after I had read your current blog.

Hey, "having a very interesting time out here" at first sounds really good and attracts attention.

But what my itching eyes then gotta read took my breath for quite a while.

Turning the bottom to the top really is a sailing manoeuvre nobody is keen to experience at all. Jesus ! Nice to know that it found its way back.

I wouldn't have liked to be in your parents shoes when the beacon started transmitting "your" distress call out there to the satellite.

I'm absolutely thrilled to hear that you're okay.

Can't wait to read your latest hopefully much more pleasent news.

You keep us in suspense every day.

Take care dear Jesse, I hope you will get some time to recover and to fix the problems that occurred at the Pink Lady.

Good winds and good weather.

Out of all this the press have been very kind although some still need to hark back to your previous mast incident...it was those sort of journos that caused me to leave, as I think I told you once before.Anyway, you brave courageous girl have a great day cleaning repairing navigating and sleeping...have Ella Bache got an anti bruising cream in your kit????

Wow Jessica, just read your blog on the storm and had a look at the pic. of your Targa and cannot believe how calm and composed you are. The storm of 98 brings back some horror memories as I knew a lot of people in that race and some didn't make it. It must have been horrible for your Mum to receive that call when the EPIRB went off. You're right, credit goes to your riggers and the shore crew who keep in touch and keep you going, let's hope that you've had the worst of it all now and that it is great sailing for the rest of the journey. I hope you get the Pink Lady back in good repair up top and below. How do you repair the rips in the main? Well you take care and I look forward to the next blog

Dear Jesse

Your description of the storm was just sensational. Last year we did the extreme rides (yes at 68yo) at the Gold Coast. These rides were just terrifying, but only lasted about 20 seconds. What we imagine you went through was an extreme ride that went for 8 hours !! You must have been totally exhausted after that and we were a little surprised to hear from you so soon. The way you write this off as a matter of fact again shows us just what a tough young lady you are.
What a scare your Mum must have had to receive a report that your EPIRB had gone off.
Fix the dunny Jesse, that must be a high priority.
Get plenty of rest now and Go-Girl-Go.

Captain Jessica -

WOW! We are all so glad you made it through that!

How does your yacht turn itself
right side up again?

I just sent an email to Lori of Brisbane telling her of my fear of your yacht capsizing. And then I read it in fact did do an 180!! and you were up side down. OMG.

Very scary. This is sure to be a whole chapter in your book, huh!!

That was one ferocious storm to start bending stainless steel. I for one was certainly praying for your safety and for the dolphins to be at your side in the storm to help protect you. I'm glad you came through it, and hope you have lots of chocolate left to pig out on to calm your nerves. May I have some also? After reading your post about the damage and you being upside down in the ocean, I think I need a glass (or two or three) of red wine. And it's only 2 pm!

Jessica - SOOO glad you are right side up again. And the dolphins I pray for to stay at your side especially in terrible conditions.

You wrote “It was a little hard at times to maintain my positive and rational thoughts policy”. Joking right? I would have peed in my pants!

Hello DEar brave jess ,All other writers have said all I can say except it may have been a type of enforced bravery ,you chose the risk & had no choice ,but your undaunted spirit now leaves us all breathless . Jesse Martin admitted in his book he cried for hours following less than that .

There is no substitute for meticulous preparation & it was nearly good enough .I'm sure even many of your critics upon departure are subdued, shamed & humbled ,if not, I say "no brain--no pain".

Now we have the ultimate contrast ---not between legless senseless schoolies & another very sensible mature 'schoolie: doing what she likes under heavy sponsorship but one who has endured & survived victorious the ultimate peril of the relentless indiscriminate ocean.

Keep your mind on & Faith in God your Creator who controls the lives of his creation,Trust
Him to lead you home .We are all monumentally proud of you, even if only inspired to rave about it inn adoration & near reverence .

Hello Jessica,

now that I have digested your exciting news a bit more, supported by books, like 'a voyage for madmen' and Naomi Watts book, that I am reading now, something else came to mind.
You said: you aged about 10 years........
I think that steely resolve, strength of character and 'just do it' attitude, no good crying over spilt milk, get with the program, solution oriented mindset was there already when you started to dream of this adventure!
You're a wise soul in a young body!
You decided to do this, no matter what is thrown at you and you will!
There are no ifs or buts!
You are awe inspiring and we, your devoted stow aways are privileged to be taking along for this exhilarating ride.
And as is evident some of your qualities rub off on us spectators!
It is already a better world, because of you Captain Watson!
Keep on sailing, you are nearly on the homerun!

Thank you Jessica with your family and team,
keep well, hope the bruises are disappearing fast and a feeling of comfort and being at home in your environment and a renewed confidence in Ella and yourself has returned more than before,

Hey Jesse,

I've read your post three times and I'm exhausted, a bit choked up and so proud of a young legend I will never meet. Sorta puts my Force 9 experience around Green Cape into perspective. Must have been a helluva shock to your Mum and shore crew when the EPIRB activated.
Hope the weather settles long enough for you to dry out, clean up and get the stove and dunny up and running. As Rob Williams said there's always the "bucket and chuck it" routine but that becomes boring after a while.
Hope the damage to the mainsail is repairable?
Cheers from the Old Bloke

What I notice and respect and about you is that you are staying in present time and keeping your head on straight. It has taken me 60 years of experiences to realize that it is one foot after the other, no matter what happens.

No matter how dark the night
No matter how long
One thing is certain
We are always turning back towards the sun.

Much of my learning has been through observation of others, not in judgement, but in observing the differences of how I would respond/react, and how others do.
And I have learned some really nice things from you. Thank You!

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."
Henry David Thoreau

You said everything was wet or damp, and your heater isn't working, and your stove isn't turning on. How are the temps outside? PW looks like you still have wind and waves to contend with, so wouldn't be able to open things up for drying out. I wonder how you deal with that, and if you have any source of heat now, other than the sun....?

Now you have an even better sense now of Ella's Pink Lady, which can only be a good thing. 10,000 more miles to go on the unpredictable southern oceans... continue staying in the being prepared mode, and I'll resist going any further into mom mode! (it's so hard!) I KNOW how able you are to keep it all together, including yourself.

Last night I went to a performance "Dance For a Reason". It was many local dance groups, from ballet to hip-hop, coming together, raising money for a cause. This year it was for a local animal shelter. The dancing and music was WoNDeRFuL.
Walks are out for you, but do you dance out there with your music?

Hugs to you for being an inspiration. For me, I've come to realize it's not so much in what you are doing (though that's so impressive), it's in your steadiness, your determination, your clarity of purpose and vision, your courage, your "policy" to maintain positive and rational thoughts (great clarity there), and your ability to follow your policy (maturity).
All good qualities to have.

Blessings and safety,
Susan in Oregon

Good job Jessica. It's great u got through this + are definitely a hard core solo sailor now! :-D I guess you quieted the doubters who didn't think you had the ability to do this. I and many of your adopted parents and friends are so proud of you. I hope everything is working, because you still have a long way to go, but you have one tough little boat, as well as her captain.

Jessica, thanks for your latest "blog'You knew that the extreme sea conditions would hit you somewhere along the way, and they did !!"big time" Well done Jesse on the way you handled yourself, and your boat, well done also EPL.S & S would be proud of you .Hopefully there is no significant damage, and you will be back to normalpretty quickly.
It's a bit of a bummer when things get activated,I recall being in a Cook Strait gale and being 'knocked down' a couple of times, the Beaufort Life Raft was "belted"out of its cradle, and the force of it caused it to inflate in the cockpit, our only option was to cut it loose, and we were left with the sight of our Liferaft disappearing astern, lights flashing, siren sounding. The old "salts"say that a good boat will always stand up to almost anything, then its over to the crew!!!Jesse you have "done good"Keep on keeping on, you are in our thoughts and prayers, Godbless & Godspeed Dougal

Hello Jesica,
My experience has been that bruises are part of sailing in normal conditions, I can't imagine the number you have after 1,2,3,4 knockdowns. You are gutsy young lady.
On a lighter side I reckon you had better change your priorities for when you get back to Sydney. 1st thing a trip to the toilet, particularly if you can't get yours going again.

Keep up the good work, we are all proud of you Peter

"Your BIG HEART"

From Jesse!

The one thing that's always on my mind, is worrying about everyone back home worrying about me,
which is kinda weird! It could be a great day or maybe it isn't, but "everything fine"

Haiti!
I can't imagine what it must be like for the survivors and for everyone working with aid organisations in what sounds like horrific conditions. My thoughts and good wishes are with them. It's great to hear about all the support pouring in for them from all around the world.

EPIRB!
I was pretty annoyed at the stupid thing for going off and giving everyone such a scare!

Love from Jesse!

We love you Jess and we're with you all the way!

I worry about you worrying about everyone else!

Well done Jessica!

Haha. Your back to normal! Where the bloody hell is normal for you???

Your not ordinary, your an extraordinary young lady who I think has gained the worlds greatest respect for you!

HI Jess,
Well done young lady you have experienced what most sailors never have and I know exactly how you felt when you went over.
Unfortunately I was caught in a low in the Coral Sea in 1993 and at 9pm our 52 ft sloop weighing 23 tonnes was picked up and physically thrown sideways down the face of a huge wave, mast went under, I went overboard still attached.
We came back upright and I scrambled back over the side to the sound of bilge alarms screaming. I swore that when I reached land I would never go to sea again.. Ha ha..!! But I did.

You should be commended for your stamina, your resilience, and your bravery as you are continuing on your journey when most would be defeated.
On more than one occasion prior to the start of your journey some media sources referred to you as a 16 year old little girl who should stay home with her mum and dad, well I have to say with all honesty I for one would be proud to have you as my skipper or as my crew..!! and I have been sailing for a long time..!!

I hope that the remainder of your journey is trouble free, and that we get to see your smily face when you are coming through Sydney Heads.

Fair Winds and a smooth sea.

Hello Jessica. Grandma Viv here again, so GLAD you are o k & that you got through that storm, please not let there be another one like that. I was praying for you during those very very very HIGH seas, I woke up in the middle of the night & you were on my mind, so I prayed for you to be kept safe. I am learning a lot about sailing these days, the word KNOCKDOWN is a word that I have learned. Love from Grandma Viv x Auckland New Zealand

Thankyou for your stirring account of the storm and for your astounding resilience and good cheer. You and Shackleton both, eh? You're the most positive person in the world today.
And your rigger does, indeed, merit all thanks. As do the rest of your shipwrights. What a team! Go Australia!!

Hi Jess,
My heart sank when I read the headline that you had a mast knockdown. I thought it might be the end of the adventure. But having read your account I can only begin to imagine how frightening the whole thing must have been. I have been through a massive natural disaster with more than 250km/h winds as a six year old. I remember it like it was yesterday and I am in my early 40's now.

What you are doing and what you have just been through is simply amazing...stay strong Jess.

There once was a fair maiden from down under
who one day said I wonder
what tomorrow I should do ...

Maybe I should go shopping at the mall,
or sail round the world in a boat so small.

So she set up a rigging sturdy, so tough and distinct
she christened her Ella's Pink Lady and colored her pink!

Up the equator, down the Cape
All hoped the storms she would escape ...

Then one stormny night,

with going a-dipping for four ...
the wet seat held, but the dunny was no more

The epirb gave er mum a fright
how is my baby going to make it through the night?

The main was battered and a little tore
the battle wounds a little sore ...

The world prayed while dolphins stood guard at bay
The heavens opened up ... it was the next day.

God speed captain my captain!

Yesterday I was reading about your knockdowns and was saying that they were always a bit of a worry. And tonight you are telling us that it was a full tumbler. My God!
I've got a dry throat just to think of it.
You are a hell of a gutsy captain on a hell of a tough EPL.
And what do you do ?
1-worry about your parents left at home worrying about you (I remember that it was one of your concerns before departing Sydney)
2-cheer your brave EPL
3-don't miss a chance to admire the sunset
4-don't let yourself draged down to despair but rather choose to recollect yourself to keep fighting the next minute with a smile.

"Jaw dropping for us", honestly!
Amazing!
You are simply an amazing girl

Dear Jessica,

Congratulations on coming through such a tempest, knocked around, battered, bent and bruised still with that beautiful, positive Jesse attitude! Your blog is fabulous and descriptive but in the photo of the bent targa the sea looks so tranquil!

You have weathered this storm and experienced situations that many sailors fear the most and there they were keeping an eye on you - your guardians, the dolphins! Accomplished.

May you have some days of relative quiet and peace to get things straight again.

Protest Writers among the Blogfolks. It is time to knock on the doors of HM PR Departments for the British South Atlantic Colonies to be checked out at www.sartma.com/art. This Website is the Mediawatch for the region. Go and see for yourself, how much has been reported about Jessica's epic adventures while being in the region. Maybe, like Dick Smith was an honoury Captain of QANTAS, when flying his helicopter around the world, Jessica should have been fitted with some sort of Australian Navy title to have her being recognized by even another Commonwealth Country. Considering she has been greeted on arrival in the region by an expensive "Typhoon" interceptor jetfighter, somebody might have thought that she is the scoutcraft of another Argentine invasion ...
What's really going on here ?
