Wet, Bouncy and Cupcakes!

With a good bouncy sea and water going everywhere today everything's starting to feel pretty salty. Every time I come in from being on deck I seem to bring a lot of water with me. Also, despite all the effort we put into tracking them down before leaving, a few small leaks have made themselves known. The leaks aren't at all dangerous, just aren't much of a help in the war against salt and damp. So I've been playing around with a tube of sealer and (fingers crossed), looks like I might have put a stop to some of them!

We passed close to another boat this morning but couldn't see him through some rain.

I pulled some sail in and out as the wind dropped off, then came back and right now we're doing a nice 6knots with 20knots of wind. Have passed 2000 miles today and my best guess is around 16 days to the equator, but it could be anything as it is all weather dependant over the next few weeks.

This afternoon I decided it was time to have a bit of fun in the galley. I've been making chocolate cupcakes! It's been quite an adventure really with ingredients and mixture going everywhere, as Ella's Pink Lady bounces along. Life would be so much easier with a third arm but I got there in the end with all the mixture, less the stuff all over my face! (Maybe I should consider a career as a juggler when I get home?). Then divided it out into the paper patty pans. Then the fun part, icing and decorating!

They are all cooked now and they smell very good. Better go now and try them out. But I've attached a pic of the cupcakes below for you all to see!

Jesse

Hi Jesse! This is Mrs. Dietrich's 5th grade class in North Carolina. We read your blog every day after lunch.

We were tracking you on our own map until you put your tracker on your website. It was a lot harder doing it ourselves so thank you for putting yours up.

Were you upset that you did next years homework? We can't believe you have to do homework AND sail around the world! That must be hard. How do you turn it into your teachers to check?

Thank you for always having a new blog. We love reading it! We can't wait to see your next video.

Hi Jessica,
Just a quick note…I forgot to tell you how pretty the cupcakes looked. Very colorful and nicely decorated. I had to laugh at the amount of shocked bloggers there were. Everyone got a big kick out of your talents, which is apparently one of many. Maybe this is the start of you becoming a Master Chef, LOL I’m sure there’s bigger and better things in store for you. (Nothing wrong with Master Chefs though). What’s in store for Christmas????
Take care and be safe and stay alert.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Very pretty cupcakes, Jess. When do you hit the scary parts of the oceans? When will your abilities begin to be put to the test by rough seas? I hope we can see more video soon, and if they can be a little longer with more of a look around Ella's Pink Lady and the ocean around you.

Take care, hold on tight, and keep enjoying. You'll be done in no time. I just started a new job this week, and it's already Friday.

Have fun!

Hi Jess

That's so funny! Really enjoyed your description of making those cupcakes!! Just think you are on an epic voyage, sailing solo around the globe and you are making cup cakes on a bouncy ocean! Who would have thought??!! What a cack! Love it! Great Photo - thanks for sharing the piccy with us! What a fun way to celebrate the milestone of sailing 2000 miles.

Any left, or have you already demolished them?

We all see the mature focused side of you and are amazed by your inner strength, courage and knowledge on this journey. So glad that you can still be a kooky teenager at times, making cupcakes!

Good luck with the sealer and you war against salt water, dampness and leaks. Hope you got them all.

Take care Jess - off to work now! Looks like it's going to be a dreary day in Sydney today, but it's Friday! Which is the best!

2000nm already and a cupcake celebration! Top stuff! As a mere male I have tried to make cupcakes in a completely land-locked kitchen. Heavy and doughy! Oh well, women certainly excel in that respect.

Huge storms here in the south east of Queensland last night. I'm listening to reports of 7cm (3 inches) hail at Warwick and pingpong ball size hail hitting the ground and bouncing two to three times. Amazing! after it has been absolutely dry for so long.

Be safe and come back to us as your lovely self.

Hi Jesse,
It's been a while since I post anything, but I've been following everyday, and also looking at everyone's comments, so I won't reiterate on how fortunate you are to be realising your dreams. The one thing I want to really stress today is a big THANKS for sharing this, your unique experience, with all of us, sailors and non-sailors alike. Your experience has given me much to think about, and I think it has been like that for everybody who writes on your blog; as early as you are at this time on your circumnavigation, I can say that for myself your trip has already contributed some changes to the way I see things.

Best of luck on your way ahead. When I read the blog, my mind flies to the skies above the Pacific, and I picture your boat down below, very tiny in the middle of the immense Ocean, steadily on its course, full of fancy tech and with a mature sailor in command. The vision is no doubt very uplifting, and also undoubtedly, will be in my mind for many years. Keep safe above all, and I look forward to the many more illustrative posts and pics from you to come.

Best regards from Sergio (Venezuela)

Your 19th day as I made entry in the Log Of The Passage I've been keeping. I'm guessing your still on the straightest course for the Line Island Rendevous with Christmas Island, so I use the Scale of miles on the World map knowing they aren't perfect but adjusting when you give more concrete information.

Hope The rain is keeping your water tank full and that the leaks are finally sealed. I recall Tania Aebi had a bout with some pesky leaks that she finally sealed with some Silicon or RTV.

Hope you enjoyed the cup cakes and have clear smooth sailing ahead. I looked at 'Sail' to see if they mentioned you but didn't see anything...Blessings Miss Jess..Prayers always covering your passage..Take Care..

Hi Jess.........You are really doing well, keep your eye on those leaks! Suggestion is to keep a light burning at night (possibly in the galley) this will attract the flying fish when you get up into the doldrums. Early morning take a walk around your decks and pick up the fish for breaky. Mind the bones, but they taste good!I follow your blogs every day and wish you fair winds and godspeed

Congrats on 2000 nm mark. Great progress for sure. Looks like you are eating very well and my favorite food chocolate. Great job on the cupcakes. Question: have you had any cravings yet for anything? I remember when I was on board a ship in my Navy days, I had a bad craving for a dill pickle. So bad in fact that while the ship was at sea and doing an UNREP (underway replenishment)I happened along a large can of dills and proceeded to eat as many as I could sharing the large can with others just to try and get rid of the evidence. Boy, I don't think I ate another pickle the rest of the cruise. It sure did taste good at the time though. Just wondering.

We were very sweaty & thought we'd cool off.

Did we? NO !! Water was 30 deg C & had no ability to refresh.

I expect the water next to Ella will feel exactly like that so don't be tempted to plunge in off the bow & retrieve yourself at the stern !!!

You can't swim at 6 knots anyhow...strong as you are.

Hope you enjoyed eating the cup cakes...have a great day...my google earth shows not too much cloud where you are...enjoy the 6 knots & the flying fish.

Wow Jesse, for someone so young your certainly putting some of us oldies to shame. lol
When you get back home make sure you watch the long long trailer, and see how Lucy handled cooking whilst traveling.:)
I try to read your blog every couple of days, your an inspiration, best of luck.

Hi Jessica
Hope you're enjoying the days as much as we're enjoying your blogs. There's a lot of us living the dream through your experience. Would love to hear about some of your feelings & the relationship that develops between you & the boat.

hey Jess
Friday night and the weekend yippee! I have just had a chance to read all the comments about you and your cupcakes. What a fan club! You'll have to write up the recipe because I imagine the instructions on the back of the box did not meet the immediate situation in which they were prepared and cooked. You are amazing. God bless

Well done Jesse, keep up the good work and stay safe (and dry). Love the cooking experiments. Cheers Christine - Tura Beach

I presume there is a difference between leaks that come from the hull versus leaks that come from above the hull?

I hope yours are the non-critical kind and I assume your people are guiding you on this.

hi, i cannot make cupcakes on my Sabre dinghy so I'm envious of yours. Sue

Hi Jessica,

Forget Masterchef, I have thought of a new idea for a cooking show.
"Jessica's Cooking Adventures"
Whilst the name may be a little plagiarised, the concept would be a first..... a cooking show telecast from the high seas.

Hi Jessica ! Great cupcakes ! You asked for a sugestion for a simpel ceremony for when you cross "the Line" the first time. First you have to swear to be a loyal subjekt to King Neptun so that you may travel safe in his Kingdom. Take a cup of sea water and pour it slowly over your head while prommising to live by and respect the law´s of the 7 seas and protect and care for all the living creatuers in and on the seas. Then shear one of your "cupcakes" with King Neptune ;-) Then you could "tar and feather" your self :-)But I think you should just colect some seaweed and dry it like a "Crown" put it on and pronunce your self "Prinsess of the seas". You will be one of King Neptun´s adopted dauhters ! Cheers Jessica I´m with you hart and soul..take care and stay safe."singelhanded" on youtub

Hi Jessica,
Good morning,I just crawled out of the sack and naturally the first thing I have to do is check on what the latest news is on you. No news. But you still have bloggers raving about your cupcakes. I hope everything is going well with you. I hope eating them super rich looking cupcakes didn’t upset your tummy. How are the leaks doing? Have you been able to conquer them? I hope they are not a serious concern. I really enjoy the tracking system your crew set up. I tried google earth and couldn’t get past the first page. LOL I didn’t understand the instructions. I felt good that I got it downloaded, to me that was an accomplishment. Maybe I’ll try again later. But your shore crew saved the day when they set up that tracker. Take care of yourself and Ella (how’s the teddie and the chicken doing, I never hear you mention them anymore?) be safe, my little angel, and alert. I look forward to your next blog.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hello, Jess,

By the time you get this it will be your Saturday morning, I think.

Hoping all is well on board Ella.

At least three hundred of us are trying to keep busy so we don't go back fifty times per 24 hours to check for a new blog post from you. You sure spoiled us with the photo of your cupcakes. A heavenly picture!

I trust you're working on the leaks while you can. At the same time, I imagine Ella is sailing in a pretty congested area of reefs, islets and cruising boats.

Take care and rest well,
Mary, Maine, USA

YOU CAN DO IT JESSICA WATSON !!! said...

Hi Jesse,

Hey ... Hope you get those leaks fixed: I'm sure you will. Although it mustn't be an easy task juggling the tube of sealant with all that bouncing around. A Little hint that might come in handy when it's too rocky to use the Tube of Sealant (until you get calm seas to fix it properly) . . . . . if you have any CHEWING GUM ... Chew It Up really well, but don't chew or the goodness out of it, just so long as there's no hard bits still left, then do a Tempory job with that. I learned that little trick once with my Car, when the Seals around the Windscreen Wipers deteriorated where they went through the Holes in the car Body: The Rain was leaking like Warragamba Dam ...LOL... : Anyway, I tried Silicone ...But it kept coming loose (with the movement of the wipers): So I tried The Chewing Gum ... and it worked !!! ... It Lasted For Years & Years. I wouldn't recommend you use it as a Permanent Repair on a yacht though; but it might be okay as a temporary repair.

WOWWW !!! ... 2000 NM's ..... Well Done Jesse !!! ... Congratulations !!!

How was your Dinner Wednesday Night .... so Did they end up being Nachos or what ??!!?? ...LOL ...

. . And as for The Cupcakes ... They look SO YUMMY !!! ... My Mouth Is Watering Just Looking At The Photo of them. You Did Well !!

By the way Jesse, I'm also following your Sister's Blog ... I used to Breed Guinea Pigs Too.

Anyway ... You keep it Up Sailor Girl !!!

Have a Safe & Happy Journey ... But Most Of all, Have Fun !!!"

Hi Jessica, I'm so excited to check in your blog and see how your day has been. Its a great feeling from this side (central London) to be traversing the seas with you, so do keep us all up-dated and your photos make it come alive for us all even more - more of them please (if you can). I can't wait for you to see some marine life... and we then get to see it as well.
Just remember that you're not alone at all.
