New Food Bag, New Chart and Last Orange

Pic: Working away at the nav station, my favorite place to sit!
Well that's it, the last of my fresh fruit. I've just been savoring my last orange and I'm sure going to miss fresh fruit! And on the subject of food today I pulled out my first new food bag. A food bag lasts 14 days. It feels like a bit of a milestone and I'm looking forward to dinner tonight because I get first pick of meals. By the end of the week all the good stuff will be gone and I'll be back to eating all my second favorites.

Progress has been a little slower today with the wind dropping right out to pretty much nothing for a while last night, then coming round on to Pink Lady's nose this morning. But we're still eating away at the miles and getting very close to the edge of the chart. So I pulled out a new chart and spent the afternoon looking over it studying up on areas we're sailing into. It feels
like we're really getting into unfamiliar waters now, I've never sailed this far east before so it's all new and exciting stuff from here.

I'm a bit annoyed with myself at the moment after thinking it was calm enough to open a hatch and being quickly shown otherwise by a wave breaking over the deck and pouring right into the cabin. There's some wet salty clothing hanging up, but it’s all drying quickly now.

Also, sorry about the delay in getting a tracking map up, but the team will have something on the website for you all next week to follow.

Alright I'm going to sign off now because I'm off to do something brave, daring and possibly a little reckless. I'm going to open the bag labeled 'School Work'. OK, so maybe I'm being a bit of a drama queen, but wish me luck on this one!

Hope everyone's having good weekends.

Jesse

Hi Jess,

Keep up the good-work, what sort of home-work have you been set?

Speaking as a sailor who rarely pokes the bow outside Moreton Bay I'm hugely impressed with your efforts to date.

Is it also possible to make pictures of bad weather conditions and your amazing styled ship?

Jessica, good morning. I have been traveling and away from a computer for two days but have not stopped talking to others about your voyage and praying for your continued good and safe progress, your safety and health, and of course, your spirit and outlook. It sounds from these last two posts that you are well. I enjoy the thought of you savoring that last fresh orange and relishing the thought of the next one you will get as you are well sustained by the other abundant foods you have on board. God does provide, often in abundance, sometimes in the way we desire or ask, other times in ways we don't expect. I will so look forward to your next post!

Hi Jessica,

Just when I was thoroughly amazed at the young lady you already are, you go an pull out the "bag labeled schoolwork" :) I almost cried laughing! Kudos to your parents for a job well done. Quick funny Hatch story, friends of ours were asleep at dock in the V-berth left the forward hatch flipped open as it was a nice night it started raining and Dan woke up from the rain and went to flip close the hatch which had already filled itself up with water and he ended up soaking his wife and himself :) Little mistakes just keeps us on our toes and remind us its okay to laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously :) Best of Luck on your daring "Homework" adventure!!!
I'm off to assemble the frame for the winter tarp on my boat so sad, but always happy to read your words.

Hey Jesse,

12:30am here and I am just finishing up work - I have had an exciting evening packing envelopes with orders. NOT!

So did you start on your school work? If so, what did you study - geography and weather? LOL Is it parent's orders to do it or just your own choice?

Anyway, I just wanted to add that I now understand why you do not give your exact position away - I didn't even think of what some of the less than hnonest people in the world would do with that info!

So just a general idea of where you are will be fine.

Hope you are having a reasonably quiet night so that you can relax in the morning during your sleep.

Stay good and keep looking after yourself.

Hi Jessica,
Got a few questions for you this time. You mentioned in your breakdown of the shore crew that Andrew handled the blogs plus other duties. Then you mentioned that your Mum handled the e-mails.
Question: Is there a difference between the two? Are they separate jobs? Also, are any e-mails ever deleted?
Thankfully, I don’t see any negative e-mails on here, and that’s another reason the reading is so pleasant.

Suggestion: Stash a few of your first choice meals down under your second choice meals and that way you’ll have a treat every once in a while. Mix ‘em up. Practice self control. I can say it but I can’t do it. What’s that saying, Do as I say, not as I do. LOL,LOL and then some more.

Many people request the longs/lats. Many people disapprove. Apparently you don’t disapprove but, have you given any thought to this? I myself, have mixed emotions about this. I don’t feel that there’s a big bad “boogieman” out there. But I just wonder if someone would consider intercepting you just to say that they have sailed alongside you. With all the sea-going minds that are on your shore team, I’m sure you have considered all different kinds of situations.
Remember….“The only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked!!! Have to think positive.
I hope you didn’t get hurt when you opened the hatch and the water rushed in. It can be pretty forceful. Once, while stationed in Hawaii (1958) I was playing in the waves on Yokohama beach and jumped into a wave (about 15 to 20ft. high) it turned me every which way but loose. Since then I have had a lot of respect for the force of water and never underestimated it. (Just a little sea story).
I might be getting ahead of myself but;
From a lot of the blogs that I have read I feel that you have fired up the sailing bug in a lot of people. I wonder if boating sales will increase in the near future, and how many people will take sailing lessons. So many people are behind you and constantly say I wish, I wish, I wish……………
You will be a big factor in a lot of peoples lives in various fields, God bless you.

Answer when you can or maybe a fellow blogger can handle that, come on.
Take care of yourself and Ella, be safe and alert. And on top of all that "enjoy yourself".

May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hello again "Jessicaptain"

Here we are Sunday evening 1st Nov @ 23.00 Hours Perth W A time.
2 weeks into your amazing journey and for those of us who have experienced how wicked the seas can be - you appear to have and are handling your challenges like a polished "Sea Dog" It also appears that many of your followers think that you got up 2 Sundays ago and just decided to "Sail around the world" - Little do they know how many years of experience and water that has passed under your keel before you got to this stage - especially for a 16 year old lady. You are sensational and the world is with you.
I have a suggestion for you, your Parents, family and your base team to get some idea of the Millions of people worldwide who are and will eventually "Lock On" to your adventure - if you/they could set up a link on your website/Blogg that we could add our names & location to - so as to give you and all your followers an idea where your "Wellwishing" has spread from. It would also bring this world closer together through you, your Parents & Minders.
Just a thought - we are all still puffing & blowing for you. Keep those sails full and Gods speed.
Regards

Bryan - Perth - W A

No more fresh fruit ? No food drops originating from a country outside Australia ? Non stop travel from Australia to Australia ?
Jess,on arrival in Sydney, will a Quarantene Officer have to attend your boat ? (Oops, I forgot the squid that jumped aboard...)
And being constantly in fresh sea air, does the cabin have to be sprayed with "Anti-Mozzie-Stuff" ?

Hello Jessica from Phoenix, Arizona!
I have been following your exciting quest from day 1! I do believe you are the most intelligent and courageous young woman in the world. You go, girl! Having never been out of the U.S., I truly envy you. Your bravery and determination should be an inspiration to all! Looks like quite a few people are checking your progress from all parts of the world. How exciting! You make us girls look good!!

I will be checking your voyage each day until you reach your goal, however long it takes. The main thing is to stay safe. You are in my prayers and thoughts each day.
I look forward to reading your blog and enjoying the photos you take. It is all so amazing.

Since I fly single-engine aircraft, I enjoy reading how your craft is decked out. I have never been on a sail boat. I haven’t used the GPS while flying because the planes I rented did not have it, although lots of newer planes now have it. I do love new technology!

This is very much a venture to read the blog and hear the little things that happen, like the last orange (I do love oranges, too) and the hatch open, but the new salty laundry would frustrate me. So would having to do homework, lol. You had me goin’ with that one – for a second I was afraid for you! What subjects are you studying for your homework?

The photos are great and I love the color of Ella’s Pink Lady. I noticed the solar panels onboard in one of the pics before you wrote that there were solar panels onboard, very cool!

I really don’t feel that the general public needs to know your exact location. I say this out of a safety concern. That should be privileged information for your crew only. If it was me out there, I sure know that I would want to be as stealth as possible, with only my crew knowing my exact location.

I really enjoy reading your blog, and seeing the pictures.

I’m ‘sailing’ with you everyday.

Stay safe on those “high seas”.
Gear up, girl!! Yahooooooo!

Good Morning Jesse

Thanks for the lovely photo of you - is that writing on the wall of the cabin? They look like good luck or safe journey messages from people? What a great idea!!

Enjoy your new food bag - save something that you really enjoy until the last meal in the bag. So there is a treat waiting for you. Works in theory, but not sure if I could do that either!!! That's sad about the fresh fruit - did you pack tinned or dried fruit?

Have you packed any chocolate or your favourite treats? I would need to have a supply of chocolate, helps you think! That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Enjoy the calmer waters which gives you time for your "school work"! Your comment was very funny - daring, reckless...

Hope the weather is with you Jesse. We had a gorgeous sunny Sunday in Sydney.

A wind that follows fast,
And fills the white and rustling sail,
And bends the gallant mast"

So the last of the fresh fruit....huh

Does that mean you now have the wonderful enjoyment of having tinned peaches and apricots instead....???
What does a food bag contain, is it all meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I think that would be exciting opening a new bag and seeing whats to eat this week. Did you have any food left over from your last Bag?

A new chart is also exciting...and i guess a little scary as well. Unfamiliar waters, something new, that should give you a bit of nervous energy to burn off. Probably a good time to do some school work....lol. Are you doing your schooling via computer as well? What if you have a question to ask your teacher? Its commendable that you are still keeping up your schooling. By the way....I'de give you an A+ for English if i was your teacher...your Blogs are amazing...Smile.

your passsion and dream are inspiring to all and you should be very proud of yourself

we are very lucky to live facing the ocean and think and talk of you every day as we look out to sea

on that note, we totally agree with another here (who is "anonymous") about the issue of your exact cordinates, we feel people should not even ask this of you, you have to consider your safety and there is no need in our opinion for anyone to know that. Surely you have given everyone so much already and MORE in so many ways, and aren't you able even to keep some privacy !!??

we are all MORE than fortunate you are prepared to place your trip so far for us all to see and follow your path

stay safe, number one, and enjoy every day..........

Lunch hour in Dubbo Just a thought .Have you used your sextant against your sat nav gear to test for position and accuracy? Sometimes eletronics can go crazy for a while like this laptop I'm on. Perhaps I worry too much.

Hi Jessica
School work, that sucks! but the way you write I think you enjoy your schooling. I can just imagine you going to your teachers and saying I need 10 months or so of school to sail around the world. I can just hear there response, you got to kidding!. What you are doing on this adventure, you can't get in the class room. But doing some school work in the quite times will help pass the time.
I know you will get onto this pirate thing in the future, that a lot of bloggers are talking about.
Pirates are not a big problem in the area you sailing in I think, so to all the bloggers wait for Jessica's response to this subject.
You look nice and relaxed and one last question, did you try to make a load of bread, if so, how did it go.
So keep having fun and keep safe.

Jessica,I love that picture of you on the Ella's Pink Lady Nav Station, snug as a bug.

Lets see if my dead reckoning navigation from last Tuesday 27 October 2009 at 7:01 AM is going to work out today:
_________________________________________

Dead Reckoning Navigation (DR):

This should be actually called 'deduction reckoning' navigation, since this is the basic form of navigation used by sailors for hundreds of years. Lets assume we don't have a ruler or a calculator, all we got is a 500 year old Map.

Now we know from Jessicas latest blog, that Ellas pink lady has just passed abeam Norfolk Island. The roughly 800nm voyage to Norfolk Island took about 8 days, which is about 100 nautical miles per day.

Divide the daily speed of 100 nautical miles by 24 hours and we get an average speed of roughly 4 knots per hour.

From Jessica's notes on her website we know her next destination as she wrote:

"Depending on the weather (direction and strength of the wind) I will choose a point where I turn left and head towards Fiji."

So we look at our old world map and messure roughly the distance from Norfolk Island to the Island of Fiji, with our index finger.(since we dont use calculator or a ruler)

2 index fingers from Norfolk Island to Fiji is roughly 800nm.

At an average speed of 100 nautical miles per day,we therefore estimate Ella's pink lady to arrive in Fiji roughly 8 days from now, or ETA:
Monday the 2nd November 2009 (UTC)
Universal coordinated time or Greenwich Mean Time(GMT).

(posted Tuesday October 27, 2009 7:01AM)

________________________________________________

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) is Monday the 2nd of November 01:30(UTC)

GMT is named after the Greenwich timeline that runs through Greenwich
in London UK.

So let's see how good this Dead Reckoning Navigation is.I would expect Jessica to be abeam Fiji before Monday
Midnight London time,or Monday 2nd November 2009 23:59 UTC.

Every birds knows that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west during their yearly migrations to warmer climate.Whales travel for thousands of miles each year around the globe using sonar and skills we can only dream about.

It is amazing how accurate DR Navigation
is.

A few years ago, during a long and arduous 4 hour cross country flight somewhere out the back of Burke in Australia,I had no clue where I was anymore.

After half an hour of looking from map to ground and back again I had to admit I was lost.

My navex Instructor got a bit impatient with me,looking at the fuel gauge and I must admit, it did look a bit on the dry side.

I finally burst out:
"I THINK I AM COMPLETELY LOST!"

There was silence in the Cockpit for a while and then he pointed to the Sun setting in the west and said: "what direction do you think that might be?"

Dead-Reckoning Pilots are NEVER LOST!

Now and then we might have a short
moment of "GEOGRAPHIC DISORIENTATION"
but we are NEVER LOST!

I always will remember that lesson.

Cheers, Jess. Hope you're having a lovely Monday, with a full moon tonight. Congratulations on your continued progress.

I hope you've been finding yummy treats in your food bag. You deserve all good things!

From reading everyone's posts, it looks like the continuing questions to you are on the topics of 1)managing your fresh water sources and 2)managing the garbage production. My guess is that you're packing it in, that nothing goes overboard unless it's edible for the sea creatures.

I'm glad that so many people are coming around to acceptance that you're not posting your daily position. I, for one, want you to have all the privacy and safety possible throughout your journey.

God bless you and Godspeed to you!

Hey Jessica,

Quote of the day for you on persistence:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. I can relate to the hatch thing. I remember being the meanest skipper ever for not allowing the crew to open a hatch on a windward passage to Fiji. It can get unpleasantly hot and muggy below decks in the lower latitudes.

Another quote i like;

"The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides." Jules Verne - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Hi Jessica,

Your post on food brought back some old memories from my years in the submarine service. When we started out on a patrol, the cook would stock in as much fresh stuff as we could hold. That lasted about two weeks then we went to the canned stuff. A few months later when we came back to port, we stuffed ourselves with fresh food. As I remember it, we almost got sick with eating too much. Ha, ha.

Glad to read that you'll be cracking the school books too. Good way to make the time at sea roll by.

Blessings and our prayers,
Leon

Hi Jessica,
Well, it’s 03:00 here in Kingwood, another one of my sleepless nights so I figured I’d read some more of your e-mails. I enjoy reading all the praise and compliments that are heaped upon you, and rightfully so. You have undertaken a monumental challenge, but you will succeed.
Glad to read that you have your schoolwork with you. Even though you are quite the teacher right now a formal education is necessary and if you should decide to go to college(will you?)this background would be required. Keep up the good work, stay safe and take good care of yourself and Ella.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Don't lose focus......It is nearly impossible to remain discouraged for long when your goal is compelling enough. If you’re discouraged, the answer is not to scale back your dreams, but rather to expand them to the point where you cannot help but be pushed forward by them.
The challenges, the obstacles, the difficulties are going to be there, no matter where you’re headed. So you might as well be headed toward where you truly want to go.
You won’t always be able to control which challenges come your way, yet you can control what rewards are on the other side of those challenges. Make those goals, those dreams so big and so meaningful that the challenges will seem trivial by comparison.
Your expectations will determine your attitude, and your attitude will determine your actions. Your actions, in turn, will determine the results you achieve.
Your future is yours to create, regardless of what has happened in the past. Imagine the best, expect the best and you’ll know that you have what it takes to get there. Ralph Marston

Hi Jess
my name is emily and im 16. i have been sailing for 6-7 years and no way have i got enough knowledge or courage to sail around the world with someone let alone by myself, so i take it you have been sailing for many years. how did you first get involved in sailing? you said that you also love sailing dingy's. i have a 20ft sunmaid trailer sailor and also have a catamaran, prindle 16 and i love sailing them as well as the dingies when i first started sailing i was racing in a little mirror dingy. i cant believe that a girl my age is sailing around the world it is really amazing. are you liking it so far even with all the squid jumping on the deck.
how are you going being so far away from home and ya family and friends coz i reckon that would be the hardest part.
how do u handle sailing by yourself when u have strong winds and rough seas. does the boat handle pretty well.
im interested in knowing how u go and what gave u the idea of sailing around the world to start off with.
well i hope you have enjoyed the trip so far and the journeystill to come
you go girl!
