Bruce, Suzanne and I met with Bob McDavitt (Jessica's weather adviser) on Monday in Auckland, New Zealand. There he was, all nestled into his office right in the middle of Boatbooks...bit like heaven really. Well certainly Jessica's version of heaven, if she wasn't out there.
It was great to meet Bob, we have worked with him when he did Jessica's weather routing across the Tasman in January. (Wow January just seems so very long ago).
We went over in detail, the forecast for the next week and also what he expected for the next month. He has various sites he looks at and also some computer modeling programs. If you were into weather, you really need to become rather good on the computer, seems the two go hand in hand! Weather and Bob seem to be synonymous. He had a remarkable way of making it all sound quite simple and understandable...although his statement about weather being a mix of pattern and chaos, reminds us that it really is a difficult thing to predict.
We went through some of Bob's charts looking at some specific areas Jessica will go through. He showed us some typical weather patterns in these areas and the currents (if any) she will expect.
Jessica called in while we were there for her regular sked and spoke to Bob about the weather she had right there and then. She had spoken to him at length whilst planning her route prior to her departure. In that preparation time, Jessica prepared some information for Bob about the yachts 'Polars' so that he would know what speeds Ella's Pink Lady can do at particular angles to the wind. This makes his forecasting more accurate.
It is a pleasure to be working with you Bob, thanks for being on the team!

(and Worry) for Jessica.

Hi Julie,
Thank you for showing us a little of the behind-the-scenes of Jessica's exciting journey. It's all so very interesting, and I hope we get to hear some more of what you're all doing on behalf of Jess.
Wow 2 posts in the same day. Weather Bob looks like a cool guy, he looks like Santa Claus ☺ ☺. You must be glade you have someone like Bob to help you guide you.
Do you have any land marks that you are close by you can let us know of.
Stay safe ☺
Well isn't that nice to give Bobby a plug well done
Yep te ET Gurl
I really must say how very fortunate Jessica Watson is to have such astute and supportive parents. Navigation and meteorology were the two most interesting aspects of sailing I found from my experiences out in the wide blue yonder. In my days I looked at pilot charts of wind directions and speeds in different parts of the globe at different times of the year. Nowadays, there's nothing normal about the weather anymore, is there really? Thank goodness for modern technology. And Bob of course. After all, what good would modern technology be with people like Bob, hey?
Oops, Re my 1st post, I meant "Things", but I'm fairly sure you all knew that.

Thanks Mrs.Watson! It's nice to hear from you about others on the shore team. I understand Jesse's grandfather (your Dad?) is a bit shy and quiet; perhaps you and Jesse could coax him into saying a few words sometime? If not, it's okay, I understand the wisdom that comes with years can sometimes lead to reticence. Your daughter is really something!(I'm telling you!?)
And if Bob Mcdavitt is reading this, I have a question.
I read on your website (and Julie mentioned it as well) that weather is both patterns and chaos. I've been thinking about chaos theory lately; perhaps you recall (from the 60's) an example of chaos theory: that a butterfly flapping its wings in Japan could lead to a major thunderstorm in, say, California.
I'm going to go out in my back yard and flap my arms while thinking great thoughts about Jesse. (I'm in America, near Chicago). Perhaps others will join in, and if they live near the ocean maybe they could make a few small waves on the water. Result? If she has great sailing weather and smooth seas, we could congratulate ourselves. If not, at least she would have someone to blame for the weather!
So Bob, what do you think? It might disprove that old saying that 'everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.
Thanks Julie and Bob!
... good to 'meet ' mum !!!!

Hi Jessica !
Hope the bread turne out ok.
Sorry about your burned thumb
A few bumps and bruises you can count on and I guess those are meant to make you more carefull so that you avoid the serious once.
Glad to hear your first aid kit is up to the standards of a hospital..
Lets hope you wont need it to often
The phosforecence in the trail of EPL is mother natures own magic fireworks....sailing along on a moonless night..did you know that if you take a bucket of sea water and clap your hands just abow it the phosfor will light up just from the sound :-)
Realy love reading your blogg every day....Your such a witty wrighter.
Say hello to Bob nextime you chatt He was a great help to us when we did the protest at Moruroa.
Looking forward to hear how you celebrate crossing the line.
Great pic of you with the dowe..
(But should the winch handle be where it is ?)guess you have spares !
Take great care out there !

It's great to see you guys thanks ever so much Julie for putting up a picture, a special g'day to Bob, I've had an interest in the weather since I was a kid with two Davis Monitor II Stations running one at home here in Melbourne and another one operating at 200Km north at Heathcote central Victoria which is monitored via the internet.
It would be really interesting to find a weather site that covers the weather where Jesse is and likewise for the rest of her journey too.
Anyway it is really nice to see the other faces supporting Jessica.
Good onya guys!
Clint - Melbourne town
Great to see Bob on the blog, what a great asset he is :-) I'd say he has one of the most important jobs. Sail on Jessica :-) Best wishes from Waikato.
Hi Mum,
How about that!
Someone says 'How about the team say something on jessica's blog?' and look what happens minutes later!
What a team!
Jessica has got a gr8 team. Look out Horn here she comes! Bye Mum.
Thank you for this land post. We are (of course) much concerned by the meteo... and the Cape Horn.
Having Santa Claus in the team might be helpful to get into the Atlantic around Christmas.
We are all much reassured to know how you watch and take care of Ella Pink Lady's safety, skipper included!
You know, when they left Sydney, I thought I would never have left my daughter go for such a trip; I understood you could make a different choice, though I could not share it. I started to follow the adventure rather fearfully. But I read all the previous blogs, and then the daily blogs of Jesse, and all the infos I could find. And now, I can say I was wrong, at least partially.
I would have been right not to let MY daughter sail away, because she is Pauline, and not Jessica... But had Jessica been my daughter... I would have let her go, and help her, exactly as you are doing!
People are different, and the girls are different too. Obviously, you got an incredible daughter with Jesse. Ttender teen looks, but an old sea wolf too, mature and oceanwise, brave and clever, and most of all, conscious of her talents and weaknesses. So she will be careful and she should achieve her goal.
I may be enjoying every day of her journey (she makes us live it so well), but I shall be so relieved and happy when I shall be able to see her entering Sydney harbour; I wish it will be on TV in France too. These moments will be unforgettable.
Hi Jesse, how wonderful, a post from you AND your Mum. Night time on the ocean sounds incredible. Good on you for putting on a bit of weight and feeling good about it...you look great in your bread baking photo! I can't wait to see the one of you eating sashimi, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be sooner than later.
Well Jesse, good winds safe sailing.

Hi Jessica
Thanks to you for your “Fish, first aid, ‘Parker’ and bread-making” blog and thanks to your mum for writing about your mnarvellous meteorologist, Bob McDavitt. It is good to hear something about some more members of your extended ‘shore-based’ support family.
One of the aspects of your blogs that gives them great appeal is your ability to write so descriptively about things that appear special to you such as the appearance of the stars, phosphorescence, and the atmosphere. It is wonderful for us readers to read about your impressions and feelings. Keep telling us about these things.
At the same time it is also of interest to hear about how you treated your burnt thumb. Again your descriptive style of writing is much appreciated. And it is of interest to hear who was involved in the preparation of EPL’s first aid kit. I am intrigued to hear that the Dromana Secondary College had some involvement in this – I recall reading this in one of your very early ‘pre setting sail’ blogs. If this is the College at Dromana on Port Phillip Bay it is the place where I spent nearly all my school holidays and learnt to swim and fish, and later on sail, so I am curious to know what the connection is between you and the College.
Your Mum mentioned that you had prepared information about EPL’s ‘Polars’. When you get a chance write something about these – insimple terms to explain how EPL’s speed is related to your angle to the wind – beating into the wind, beam reaching and broad reaching – and the sails you set at these different angles.
Finally, your menu – real or imagined - appears to be never dull. You sound as though you have opened the best restaurant in the Pacific – do you call it Watson’s Galley or Jessicas Kitchen? Don’t forget to keep sailing and give Parker a Rostered Day Off when you cross the Equator, and let us know when you are 100 miles from your crossing point.

I must say... I followed both Zac and Mike's trips and probably read every one of their blogs. They weren't bad writers... but you are much better and have a wonderful natural style.
Keep your blog post rolling because that will keep people coming to your web site and make your current (and future) sponsors quite happy. Not to mention... it will make writing your end of trip book that much easier with all that material to pull from.
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Watson..
Just a note to say THANK YOU for raising and sharing SUCH a wonderful daughter! I am sure your son (and any other children) are equally as talented and giving of themselves as Jessica.
I personally spend a huge amount of time working with teenagers (Olympic-style figure skaters). Each and every one of them is special in their own right and I cannot pour enough love into my involvement with them. From that standpoint, even after seeing firsthand how much incredibly hard work and sacrifice a young person must put fourth to attain their most high-spirited dreams, I can barely imagine what a massive undertaking this must be for you to not only to fund, organize, launch and see through a project like this, but to enter your own young daughter into the fold of it as the key player. You have, obviously, cultured and maintained a very close and endearing family!
Again.. thank you for sharing this experience with the world, and especially for allowing us bloggers to enjoy an interactive part of this historical occasion! It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are all indebted to your kindness and generosity.
Be well, be safe.

Sounds like Bob McDavitt is the right man to be looking out for Jessica. Reassuring to know her voyage has been thoroughly planned and her team is well qualified.
Julie, you must be one terrific Mum to have nurtured Jessica to be so well disciplined and focused. Hats off to you and your husband on allowing her to follow her dreams and making sure she had the maturity, skills, and knowledge to pull it off. Wish more parents would follow your example and not coddle their children into inactivity. duane

The Meteorology advisors are doing a fantastic Job year after year not only for Sailors and their Boats, but also for Pilots and their Aircraft and for the thousands of people in transit traveling day by day.
Then there are Tsunamies,Earthquakes, Hurricanes,Cyclones,Tidal waves, and more to watch with all data constantly being updated and checked. The Weather advisors are doing an enormous job and are really the unsung heroes doing their best in keeping everyone out of harms way and making sure we all get home and safely to our destinations.
Weather forecasting today has become much more accurate than it was only 10 years ago. So it is a pleasure to see the picture of Jessica's weather advisor Bob McDavitt and a big thank you from all of us who depend daily on the research, knowledge and advise given by our great weather advisers.

Hi Julie,
Great to see and hear of the "back room team" watching over Jessica. Probably next to food, weather is the second and maybe the first consideration.
I hope you will let Bob post on the blog and give us a little more insight into weather management for JW's route.

glad she has good support - go Jess go!
Hi Julie,
Thanks for the behind-the-scenes. It's good to know that a lot of work is being out into keeping Jess safe out there. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jesse,
Glad to see that you are still persisting on catching a fish. You will catch one sooner or later. You are looking really well Jesse. Making your own bread as well, you are such a clever lass.
I have just come back from a camp with my 11 daughter and have enjoyed catching up with your blogs. We had a great time and every time we were out on the river I thought of you. We were at a camp on Lake Karapiro where they will soon be holding the world rowing champs. It was a gorgeous spot. There were 160 children at the camp and some of the children had never been on a boat before and some even thought that there were sharks in the river :) !!!!!!!! I thought you would have a little smile about that one Jesse.
It was great to get a blog from your Mum Jesse and to see a photo of the team helping to look after you on your journey. You have so many caring people who can give you their expert advice.
Your blogs are always interesting to read how ever simple your day is. Actually, I am quite relieved when I hear that you have had an uneventful day. There may be challenging days ahead so just relax as much as you can while you are able to.
Keep safe Jesse. We are all behind you 110%.

Hello
Sometime we forget all the "behind the scenes" work put in by others. It's good to meet some of the support 'crew'. Thank you all.
Now try baking bread whilst bouncing on an open sea!! Can't do it !! Well your daughter can!!

Not only can you sail, Jesse - you can write awesomely too, girl! LOVE reading your blog. Yeah don't ever feel lonely hey - we're all out here thinking of you! And being so proud of you. Have fun, Jess, & God bless. Ha - rhymes...! Hmmm... You just do what you're obviously so good at anyway - & that is sailing around the world. Ok?!! Jo Lawson, Brisbane.
Julie,
While Jessica is in my daily prayers, you and Roger are as well. I am a mother of three and I know how precious our children are.
I'm sure it was a big leap of faith to let your sweet girl go out there and prove herself.
We Irish types light candles for safe travels.
Every morning, when I light mine, I say a prayer that the Angels guide your lovely daughter safely home to you and Roger.
Keep the faith, and remember...no matter what anyone says, it's always hardest on the Mother.
Yep. :)

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the pic and some of the behind-the-scenes info.
You are becoming a bit of a jetsetter - Melbourne last week for lunch, NZ this week for weather, next week?
Anyway, I just wanted to drop a line, say hi, would be nice to chat with you one day.
And Bob looks like a fun sort of guy, his smile looks like a smile of someone who is a bit of a practical joker and who enjoys life.

Thanks Jess, for all the interesting background info. and updates.
It is lovely to imagine the peaceful beauty of the phosphorescence glowing as it swirls in the wash around Ella's Pink Lady beneath that thick blanket of stars!

Thank you, Mum, for including us in your excursion to meet with Bob. It's great to have some visual info now, and to be able to think about Jess and Bob being in communication daily.
May you be well, in strength and at peace.

Ok the old hilbilly is bumbed out today,I will be in florida for the next week and miss some of whats going on here.( The wife told me that the laptop stays here, OUCH! ) Gotta fly down to Florida and work on mom's no-internet house for a week. Luckly I may still have a few buddies down there who understand my needs to log in >.< ... Jessica, may the next week find you in calm seas and fair wind under full sail. I am starting to think more about a trip down under to see your return, I have never been and won't have a better reason to go. Anyway all the best from me and mine to you and yours.
hi mum, hi Bob, hi Bruce and Suzanne,
Great idea that you guys could post on Jessica's log. Maybe this could take a little pressure off her when the seas get a little rougher--or she runs low on whimsy (never!!).
Anyway, your info is really good and many of the questions I have--and I'm sure it's true of other followers--would best fall to the team, not necessarially to the captain (or the cook).
Anyway, hats off to you and all the others behind the scene in support of this amazing young woman.
Thank you
Richard Lathrop
Hi Julie,
So good to hear from you and see you and your wonderful team !!
Bob sounds like a weather champion. Go Bob !!
Bob, why is the temp of the sea so warm where Jess is now? Is that always like that?
Thanks Julie, keep writing, it's great to hear from you. You must be so proud and congratulations for resisting the negative opinions of others. (if we listened to all the hype, none of us would not get out of bed in the morning)
You have sent the 'sailing fraternity' to be globally chic !! All the best to you Julie. Cheers.
Jessica,
Thank you giving me and my grandchildren this wonderful geography lesson. We are following you every day. Love the map on the website.

Jess, just think how lucky and fortunate you are to have your tech people and Bob for forecasting the weather. It is reassuring, but your challenge is still daunting and you're in the same league as Joshuah Slocum and others who have gone before you and had none of the high tech stuff. Go Jess Go :-D
this is very cool
this is very cool
Thank you! It's great to hear from you. Please don't delay in filling us in on the homestead activities. Jesse's family must be nearly as awesome as she is and I, for one, will be privileged to know you and what's going on as Jesse travels. Fair winds to you, too.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the update. It's interesting to learn how much detail and planning go into a voyage like Jessica's. But then of course, success is in the details.
You guys are doing a great job providing her backup, and keeping this blog up for those of us around the world who are wishing her well.
Continued best wishes,
Brian in NY.
thanks for showing us behind the scenes stuff
have fun
It is nice to see the "behind the scenes" people. Great to know there are such knowledgable souls looking out for Jessica. Sorry MUM, I think she has become everyone's daughter now. We all want to know she is safe and happy!
What a fabulous support team Jessica has.
Thanks so much for the information, it's great for us bloggerholics to get a behind-the-scenes understanding of what it takes to keep Jess sailing to success.
A great photo!!
Thankyou

Oh, thanks Julie/Mum, for broadening the picture! And also for introducing Bruce and Bob.
Clearly I am the poster child marketing target for the Hallmark Greeting Card company! (I hope Hallmark is international so that makes sense) Here you are showing us what goes on behind the scenes---the science and the people, and it's all matter of fact and informative, and, while I *am* absorbing the information, my over-riding experience is of what an amazing group you *all* are. I probably shouldn't be admitting what a sap I am, but yes, I sit here in my little arm chair trying to read, while my nose and eyes are making a weepy mess of things!
I find it so touching; the lengths you, the family, have gone to and continue to go to, and how many extended "family" members you gather in the dedication to supporting the continuing success of Jessica's dream!
You all take care!

Very nice photo of the home team ! Jessica is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable resource to guide her her around the most threating weather conditions. Terrific update ! Safe Sailing Jessica !
Great sideline story, Julie.
I once met Reinhold Messner, the great solo mountaineer, who was the first to climb Mt.Everest unassisted and without extra oxygen."In a race against Edmund Hillary, Tensing Norgay and Team, would you have won ?" "No," was the straight answer,"my training and unique physique makes it possible to climb without extra oxygen and therefore eliminate extra weight, but the final factor to complete the task solo lies in the circumstances of a superior quality of lightweight equipment produced TODAY." That was in 1980.
It still takes a lot of guts and endurance to fulfil the task of sailing solo around the world, but in no way can be compared with Joshua Slucum's journey.
But let's not forget, that even the best computer is a dumb bunny,if you feed it garbage. You have to know your trade well to predict the right course. In the early days of jet aviation in the late 1950s a Boeing 707 was crewed by the Captain, First Officer, Flight Engineer AND the Navigator. Jets in comparison to Props are able to fly higher in areas of stronger wind currents. One day, a westbound 707 changed height on the advise of their Navigator, who by consulting the Met service and computing their datas in calculations with pen on paper, thought of having found the most efficient airway to America. If they had enough fuel on bord, a new category of flying around the world would have been created that day,as a few hours into the flight, land appeared - at the rear. Despite hammering out so many pounds of thrust through those modern jet engines, the westerly wind over the Atlantic was mightier and moved them back to departure point.
Jess recently reported of having a similar experience of slightly tracking backwards, so let's hope that Bob can't be blamed for it.
By the way, isn't it remarkable how many New Zealanders are envolved in explorations on this planet. Good on ya, keep up the good work, folks. And let's give Jess a little break from writing. On such a "sabbath day" it's Mum or Team's turn to report something about the journey.
Looking forward to it anytime
Regards
Victor

Hi Julie,
I haven't sailed before but am finding the technical information Jess puts up on her blog really interesting to read. It is reassuring to see what's happening behind the scenes, it certainly sounds like she is well equipped to do this round world journey. Thanks so much for the update!
Best Wishes to you, and everyone else in Jess's support team.

Hi Julie,
I was glad to see the letter with some explanation as to what goes on behind the scenes. Thank you. To me, knowing what's going on in the background is as exciting as the actual trip. How it's done and what each individual goes through holding up their end of the program, and everyone working together.
First of all, I want to commend you all for doing an excellent job of preparing and supporting Jessica in her quest. Julie and Roger (Mum & Dad) and Tom & Emily, Bruce and Suzanne, Scott, Andrew and Bob McDavitt . And also, to all the other unnamed people that are in the background. I went back to May 07‘08 in the blogs and read and read and read some more. The information I got out of that was outstanding. Some people today only see Jessica and the Ella’s Pink Lady,(not meaning to offend anyone) they don’t see any of the backgound, unless they search for it, and don’t fully realize what it entails to put someone’s dream into reality.
A long time ago I watched a show about the Muppets and how it was put together, with all the sounds and puppeteers in action. It shed a whole new light on the show, knowing how it was put together. Lord of the Rings was another example of what takes place in putting a movie together. Although your field is entirely different, knowing what takes place in the background is very enlightening and enjoyable.
I have been following Jessica since the unfortunate incident with the cargo ship, just before she set sail out of Sydney. I was glad to see that turned out as more of a learning experience than a disaster. It did annoy me how the media latched onto it and blew it out of proportion.‘Nuff said, have to stop or I’ll start ranting and raving, LOL Jessica is an outstanding girl as you and Roger are outstanding parents. It's great to see her brother and sister support her as well. A fine close knit family.
I hope to see more mail from you and your crew. Thanks for everything, and God bless you and Roger and the entire Shore Crew.
May God be with her and watch over her and may the angels keep her sails full. I will keep you all in my prayers.
Michael (74) from Kingwood, WV
Well done, sounds like Jess is in good hands!
To all the helpers of Jessica's team
The logistics must be mindblowing to keep her safe and well both mentally and physically.
We all hope she makes it, obviously, so it was good to hear from you. I am so pleased that things seem to be going well at the moment and that the media have lost interest. I fear a media deluge once she nears AUS again and that could be more traumatic than some of her south seas sailing.
Being someone who is ex media and now really hates alot of what it does to people, I urge real caution with the media please please please
Dusty from Dubbo
Thanks for the behind the scenes info! My thoughts and prayers are especially with you folks as I can't imagine the pressure and concern you have for Jessica. It is with great pleasure I check out the website each day to follow along in this epic journey and imagine what it is like to be out there! So thank you to the support team for allowing us landlocked followers to come along! I wish you continued success and blessings! Godspeed, Mike
Sounds to me like a great addition to your team!
Much goes into preparing such a journey...I cannot even wrap my head around it!
Hi, any communication via Amateur Ham Radio FQ? There is a FQ 14.325 SSB everyday where we are listening and talking to sailors all over the world. Nice site, will follow you around the world!

hi mum!
thanks for the blog entry...it's good to know who's working behind the scenes.
keep up the good work everyone...
Maybe your Blog is the most read in Aus. I wonder how many people in the U.S. read it? I am a retired U.S. Navy Commander and I am following your travels like a wonderful novel. I admire your spunk and hope you catch that fish soon! Nick
Thanks for your blog entry, Julie. Your response shows how interactive this blog has become. We're all helping your little girl along in our own ways.
Your girl is quite a treasure.

i was negative about your voyage before you left,no longer. great reading, when i read it,for a little time i am there with you.its in the writing and calm confidence, vaya con dios ....
Sorry...this is Jessica's blog. I am not interested what Mum is up to....keep out of the limelight....it's not your gig, O.K? Jess will tell us what the weatherman says.....
Thanks Julie, great to hear what you have to say. You and your Husband have put so much planning into Jessica's adventure. The care taken to have the very best team to support her is obvious. She's doing you proud too. Our very best wishes go to all of you.
Dear Mum,
You are a very blessed lady to have a daughter like Jesse. Not just because she's sailing around the world but because she has the will and the fortitude to fulfill her dreams. Your daughter presents herself as a role model. She is every parents dream. You have a daughter who has succeeded in life at the age of 16. Few people are so fortunate. I continue to wish her Godspeed each day of her voyage.

Dear Julie,
Thanks for your blog. It's wonderful to meet some of the support crew for your dear Jesse. It's comforting to know so many are looking out for her. Well done, everyone!
Yay team! So glad to be able to meet part of your network team, Jessica. Yay!
Hi Julie,
Thanks for the pics and explanation. Weatherman Bob seems to be a fun sort of guy, that smile of his seems to hide the prankster within?
Keep up the good work!

PS I am not sure why but lately, some of my comments have not been appearing, which is pretty disappointing considering that I respond to every blog. I am unsure what the blog moderator does with some of the comments, maybe an explanation could be forthcoming?

Hi Julie,
I was a little taken aback when I read a letter that you received. Jessica is our main concern so what does it matter who writes on "whose" blog. She sounded to me that she may have had one to many Millers or Fosters. At first I thought it was some kind of a joke, but I didn't see any ha ha's nor any LOL's.
I'm sure there are many, including myself, that are interested in what you have to say. You are the Limelight and you are part of this GIG, you and your family and the Shore Crew. I hope I'm not speaking out of turn but she "lit me up". It's difficult to believe that people can be so narrow minded in something as beautiful as this. I'll quit there, but please ignore this person and keep sending information for those of us who appreciate it. Thank you.
May God be with her and watch over her and may the angels keep her sails full. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Hey there Marg blogger, there is no 'i' in team. To get this happening, as I am sure everyone will agree, has taken a mammoth effort by all.
Moreover, I think it is a great idea to have the team write to this gigantic blog, keeps us up to date and takes alot of the daily pressures off Jess. We are speaking to Jessica's caretakers and brains trust, how special is that !! Jessica cannot do it without them, they cannot do it without her feedback. So glad Jess is not depending on me, I get lost in public toilets.
Dear Mrs. Watson, may I call you Julie?
It is wonderful that you have added to Jessica's blog. I hope you continue to do so and answer the many questions that are on your readers' minds, for example:
What was your shopping list when you stocked up for 8+ months?
How did you stow all the stuff? I hope in a well mixed pattern so Jessica doesn't have to dig to the bottom when she has a craving for cheese (like in that desperate phone call a few days ago?)
Jess says the water is enough for her drinking and cooking to last the distance - how much water is that? Of course, she topped up, had a fresh-water shower and washed down the boat in a squall.
How many diagrams of the boat did you draw to be able to stow everything?
You and your family and your professional crew are a fantastic support for Jessica.
Wishing you all the best, Helmut
Hello TEAM, hope you're all well. I just wanted to say sorry to Bob. I meant to say what good would modern technology be WITHOUT people like you. Good to see you. Hello also to Julie, you should be so proud. Regards to Jess' dad too.
I must say, I totally agree with "Amazedbyou" There is no "I" in team. Take care all...Sam

Jess's Mum - lovely to meet you and introducing bloggers to the very important weather man. It is also great to see the family involved and everyone doing their bit here and there. How could you not be proud of Jesse she is a beautiful and inspirational girl? Give yourself a pat on the back.
I hope the family enjoys the whole
adventure and reading the comments of bloggers who have really taken Jesse into their heart. Perhaps we can hear from other family members as time and inclination permits.
In the meantime thank you for allowing me to enter 'Jesse world'. Jesse is truly special and much loved and cared about.
God Bless to you and the family

Marg the blogger...your comments were completely inappropriate and show critical negative thinking in a positive supportive place. You comment has more to do about you than anything else. I am extremely interested in what Jessica's support team have to contribute! As are many others.
Keep 'em coming mum and the rest of support team! I am fascinated.

oh! ps. how rude is margs comment today. to you marg; jesses' mum is a very important part of this journey, if you are going to read and comment on her blog please stop the nasty talk...it's odd behaviour...shame on you marg :(
Greetings from the USA and thank you for being so faithful with your blog. We can imagine that after a long day of doing, the last thing one might want to do is to have to sit in front of the computer screen and start telling.
One fishing suggestion: If you have any red thread or yarn that you can unravel, you might want to try attaching a few strands to the tail of one of your trolling lures. This will imitate the entrails of a wounded fish and might provoke a strike.
Finally, one for the question queue: Your website details the rules for completing a circumnavigation. But what, exactly, defines "unassisted?"
You obviously had some great weather, technical and preparation assistance. Does "unassisted" just mean that once you depart, no other human being can provide you supplies or touch you or EPL in any way? For example, if you were to pass another cruiser, could you trade them some chocolate for a few oranges? Would you be aloud to touch land for a walk or repairs (that you do yourself?)
Keep up the great spirts, and GodSpeed,

Watch out Courier mail says storms are coming. Have you tried evaporating salt water to make your own salt, it would be cool to try and imagine selling it when you get back to Aus
I'm fascinated by your story, strength and maturity. And I applaud your parents for the difficult task of letting you go to follow your dream. This can't be an easy time but all of you will be so happy when you finish your journey.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the insight to some of the "behind the scenes stuff." I'm sure there are numerous other things that are going on that we're not privy too. No problem at all, we think you are all very generous in the information we have been receiving so far. Obviously we're all hoping Jess achieves what she has set out to do but without the loving support from all of you it would be that much harder.
All the very best.
PS. Thanks Bob McDavitt for your help & your blog too.
The McGraths Nowra NSW
A South Pacific joke
The American businessman was at the pier of a small South Pacific Island village when an island fisherman docked his small outrigger canoe. The fisherman had a dorado and several large grouper in the canoe. The American complimented the Islander on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Islander replied, "Only a little while." The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Islander said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a late afternoon nap with my wife, Helia, stroll into the village each evening where I sip rum and play guitar with my friends, I have a full and busy life."
The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small fishing village and move to Australia, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise."
The South Seas fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15-20 years."
"But what then?"
The American laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."
"Millions, really? Then what?"
The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a late afternoon nap with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip rum and play your guitar with your friends."

Hey Jess,
More Free Advise . . .
On the fishing thing; may have been suggested or figured out by now but just in case; presuming that you are using a rod and reel, try setting the drag rather lighter than is usual, you know a little bit more than just enough to stop it feeding line out, (1.5kg pull max) and set to ratchet for audio, that way you should hear immediately if you catch a fish or a bigger bit of weed or whatever that could slow you down for hours without you knowing it was there. And when you hook up, have you got a fish bin to dump it in, rather than thrashing around at your feet sort of thing as nearly everything up that way can either sting, bite or spike you - they taste good, that's why.
Anyway, enjoying your blog along with everyone else, the whole thing is quite a production and it's great being able to keep up with the play in pretty much real time.
All the best regards to you and your team

Just playing with the forecasts I use www.passageweather.com and I pretty much understand that. When you get a chance, do you have any suggestions for any other websites? I think you'll get alot of requests for help in the future. (Me too, I need all the help I can get). LOL

Hi Jess, I thought since so many people are reading your blog around the world and particularly in Australia, perhaps you could edit the spelling of sauce not source and flour not flower (below the picture). Hi Jessica
Lesson 6 John 17 17-20
In Jesus' prayer for His disciples, just before his crucifiction, He said God's Word is ___ . He also prayed for us; and for all those who would believe on Him through the Apostle's Word.
This voyage of Jessica's is simply inspirational. I think the world over people will eventually look solely in her direction because nowhere right now is there anyone that inspires such a faith in hope for the future. Journeys such as this just cannot be ignored. Well done.
You made me feel a little home sick for a second or two.
This Brisbane weather is just fine by me though, for now. Hope to get up to Mooloolaba next weekend to check on the boat (Blue Heron). Now I know what you look like I may shake your hand if we meet. You are an inspiring family.
Keep up the good work Bob.
After the equator, Im going to be very much relieved after you are past the Horn. Just read this in wikipedia:
'The Horn remains a major hazard for recreational sailors, however. A classic case is that of Miles and Beryl Smeeton, who attempted to round the Horn in their yacht Tzu Hang. Hit by a rogue wave when approaching the Horn, the boat pitchpoled (ie. somersaulted end-over-end). Although they survived, and were able to make repairs in Talcahuano, Chile, they attempted the passage again, only to be rolled over, and dismasted for a second time, by another rogue wave, which again they miraculously survived.[39]'.
Jesse, you are going to need all your wits, plenty of luck, and every bit of your training down there. Be very careful. Ive read the waves can reach a hundred foot. You will definately need to be strapped in always, and Id make sure you are wearing survival clothing in case you do go into the water, to protect from hypothermia.
You have had nice conditions so far, but you cant afford to be complacent. Nows the best time to plan for the worst conditions. Go over and over what you will do in various circumstances. Visualise yourself and EPL in the worst seas and work out the best course of action. Utilise your team experts to give you advise about what you think your actions should be. Might be worth putting theoretical scenarios on your blog and with luck get some ideas from people out here who have sailed there. The more options up your sleeve in an emergency, the better armed you are, but one thing in an emergency is you have to make very quick decisions, and hopefully the right decision. I guess in 100ft seas, the main thing is stay below, everything closed up, and sit it out with fingers crossed, and harnessed securely, and no loose objects, bit like aerobatic flight.
Now that Ive brought all this up, with luck you may just encounter smooth conditions. No one gets dissappointed that their expensive EPIRB expired without ever being used. I doubt you will be dissappointed if the seas dont throw you scary moments.
I guess its more scary to watch this from the outside than for the person aboard.
Thanks for the pic everyone.
Its nice to see a pic of you all.
your all doing a good job.
We all worry so much about lil Jess but your all family so you know what she can handle,
Though she is just a lil tiny 16 year old girl all alone out at sea and we all worrie.
Well Jess keep up the good work.
You seem to have it all under control.Be good sail safe.
Hello Julie,
after recently reading Jesse' blogs from April o8 to the current, I am in awe of what it has taken to get Jesse to where she is now. It has certainly been a monumental effort by all concerned. Kudos to your dedicated team. I have no doubts no stone has been left un-turned regarding the safety and security of this epic journey being undertaken by one so young. May I also say that thru reading the blogs, Jesse has shown a maturity far beyond her years and a mindset that will allow her to challenge and conquer anything 'mother-nature' has to offer. She will succeed.
To "Marge" from an earlier post on this blog...Julie has been posting in Jesse' absence since day dot and we appreciate and look forward to any correspondence she, or her team for that matter, have to share with us.
Thanks Julie and guide her well Bob as always.
Ben (Qld)
He Jess, I'm sure you know this but if you're ever worried about lightning just hang a big ole chunk of chain off the backstay and into the water. Then stay away from metal and you'll be right! Lightning always follows the path of least resistance, or at least that's what I've been told.
Loving the blog! Best of luck catching some fish...
GO MUM! GO TEAM! GO JESS!!!
Oh well, I figured we couldn't sail along with Jessica in spirit, without some negative person crashing the party.
They so like to do that.
Those negative people.
Marg, if you had read any of this blog, before inserting your nasty comment, you would know that Jessica and her parents are a team.
And Mom's comments are always welcomed and appreciated.
This comments section is for people to send love, prayers and support to Jessica AND her parents and the team that guides her.
As my Mother said...
if you have nothing nice to say,
don't say anything at all.
Just a note of interest, that might not be known to everyone. Have a look at http://www.joshuasclucumsocietyintl.org/jshistor.htm and check the 14th of November 1909...
Thank you, Andrew, Richmond, Virginia.
Yes, Marg,
Some of us are interested in the the voyage as well as the behind the scenes action. Mr. and Mrs. Watson put a large amount of time and effort into this voyage, as did quite a number of other people.

I find it completely odd that the single most important person you're entrusting your're daughter's life with while she is out there, you're only meeting face to face now.
Originally I thought this was some old family friend since half the family is/are from NZ, which explained the choice since you're in AUS, but this meeting only taking place now indicates otherwise.
Very strange to me. I'm hoping it doesn't get even stranger in that we are to find out that even Jessica has never met Bob.
Marg, 9:13AM:
Top comment (which you probably won't read.) Keep streamlining your egoistic life by ignoring our comments as well. Isn't that what all this new digital equipment is producing ? The filtered world of one sided reporting. (That's how the digital toaster will work, brown's the bread only from one side...)
Marg, you are one lucky girl, that this team, which you dismiss so much, is not only enabling you to read Jess' blogs but is giving her the real backup support that she requires to make it around to Sydney again. Take some time out, think about what you have written and then come back for a decent apology.
Regards
Victor
Kind question: Is your family in any way related to the great Australian swimmer Shane Gould ?
Checking the website of Ella Bache, their photo of Jess displays a striking similarity to Shane. Has anybody noticed that as well ?
Hi Mom!!!!!
You are to be commended for sending your little girl out into the deep blue sea.
I am a mom and I could never do that!
Kudos to you...

Hi Julie,
I have a question:
At the bottom of my blog there is an icon (like a trash can) and when I put my cursor on it it says "delete comment", why is that. All my blogs have that icon, but I don't see it on anyone else's blog. Could you explain that to me. 'Cause if I'm doing something wrong I'd like to know. Thank you.

For the 'ground crew' shown---Some of the rocket fuel for the Sailing Pocket Rocket, eh !!!
Nice touch !
With 'weather Bob'....predicting the weather... a tall order, but he seems to be one of the best at the job.
Way back, in another lifetime, I waded through 'Advanced Climatology'..... ~ the theory and mechanisms of 'weather' at any place at any time would be OK if it weren't for the chaos and random parade of these, eh Bob. Hehheh.
... and how'd that slab of beautiful, fresh bread go, Jess?
Ooc.
Hi Jessie,
Please, please, please keep up the Blogging.
How easy it is when you're busy to not give a reply, but we both enjoy reading about your day. Selfish I know, but sincerely, I believe you'd be surprised - and amazed - by the number of people who follow your reports. Still hot and dry on the coast - love more rain. Yes THE dam has gone, but now there's a desalination threat at Marcoola - although this will probably cause less overall destruction than the dam. Pollies just don't think of the obvious - such as water tanks with every home and storm-water collection ..
Anyway Jessie - as always - enjoy your life Girl, because the goal is to enjoy the journey. Roy & Jenny. Sunshine Coast
hi jesse me again ...hope this note finds you in the best of health,,,,could you tell us what music you like to listen to...My wife Martyna is on a huge Freddie Mercury kick at the moment and it seems like everywhere I go I hear Queen playing in the background...I like Pink floyd Eric Burdon and Bob Marley...well keep smiling....stay out of the rough seas....Bernie 777....

The above post is completely and totally irrelevant and shows the utter lack of understanding of what is taking place here.
Does the poster also think that Jess personally knows the team at Sparkman and Stephens that designed and built her boat?
If in fact, Jessica and her parents have never met their meteorologist, I fail to understand why this is of any importance or significance.
I did a 700 mile open ocean sail to Bermuda and relied on Herb Hilgenberg for my weather forecasts. He is based out of Ontario, CA and provided the needed information in a timely fashion for my journey.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/hehilgen/vax498.htm
I never met Herb face to face; there was no need to. Bob is presumably being compensated for his time and skill in providing Jess and her team with accurate and timely weather data in order to make this the safest journey possible.
It simply doesn't matter whether or not Jess and her family knows or has ever met Bob face to face.
The only important thing is the accuracy and timeliness of his forecasts.

Hi out there,
I just ran into a very catchy song which to me calls up the impression of Ella riding through the waves at well ... some good speed: "Gravity" from Seraph 49. If you'd like to listen in: http://www.myspace.com/seraph49

Resist feeding the negative comment with a response. Ignore the person's comments. S/he is having a bad day/week/year and needs to be left alone for awhile.

Hello again "Jessicaptain"
What an Incredible Experience that you have allowed us to participate in - watching your dream unfold. We are living & reading your book as you write it. Once again congratulations to YOU, Your very inspirational Parents and supportive Team - You WILL succeed.
As I have earlier alluded to, please do NOT advise your exact positions as their are IDIOTS out there :- Like Marg 15/11 0913 = "Low Life" who would try & sabotage your dream by handing you an orange or worse, board EPL & disqualify your RTW attempt to be unassisted. We have enough information to know where you are. To Marg - as someone else remarked - if you have nothing nice to say - "Go Away"
99.99 % of your millions of admirers are puffing & blowing you home with the help of your TEAM.
There is no "I" in TEAM but there is a "U" in GROUP.
Keep your sails full and Godspeed

Hi jessica
A lot of thanks must go to your team, without a great team this journey would never happen, so well done team, keep up the good work.
For the first time over here in the west, they had a VERY small article in the news paper, saying you may be hit by a large storm soon. I checked all the weather reports I have and it all looks good, so I'm not sure what they are up to. I think the media are just waiting for you to trip up, so keep going the way you are.
With what you are doing, the media have been very quite over here. With nothing at all over the last month, but when you return home with the record, they will all came out of the wood work, and will wont a piece of you.
What is your weather forecast for the next week?
So keep having fun and keep safe.
Cheers George Simmons
Lots of love from Exmouth WA
Thanks, Bryan - Perth WA;
You took the words right out of
my mouth. That's why I wrote early on that the general public does not need exact positions.

I've been following you every day since your journy began and your journal is my daily highlight! I live inland in the center of the USA--Oklahoma. I have been in love with the ocean since the first time I saw it when I was 4 years old and go there every chance I get but, my experience with it consists only of swimming and diving. (I did get to dive Great Barrier Reef at the ripe old age of 62!) What I am getting at is --if I was 16 and had the experience and opportunity you have, I'd do it too! Am with you all the way! YOU GO GIRL!!!

You know, Bob McDavitt looks like the right guy to be watching the weather charts. Seems like you have a great team Jess.

You retained an amature remote weather router for a piddly 7 day cruise to Bermuda. LOL. Obviously a beginner. Just because you had to use an amature weather router due to having zero experience on a 7 day cruise, and having never met him, doesn't mean experts like Jessica sailing around the world and paying for a professional weather router, shouldn't meet with him.
You know what I mean. :-)

I have been following your journey for a while now, and I have to say you are an inspiration to all young people. I work with disadvantaged youth, and have asked them to keep upto date with your blog. Your good progress is also being sent to 4 young people who are currently on expedition in Borneo.
I look forward to your next posting.
God speed Jess:)
Best wishes, Nikki
Hi Julie
You are so welcome on Jess' daily blog. It is great pleasure to see whats happening with ground team. Sorry for the dumb news that Jessie burned her thumb on the boat , hope no big deal. Pls keep writing and sharing the family news as well.
Hi Jess , I have a question. If you happen to get a magic lamp and a genie wants to realize your three wishes , what will they be. While you think on this , pls read on what happend to these three executives.
Once there were three executives walking in a park during lunch break. One was big boss and other two junior officers. From under a bench they found a golden lamp. After slight rubbing a genie appeared. She said that normally she would realize 3 wishes of the owner of the lamp but because they were three already there , she will accept one wish from each. One of the juniors , imdtly requested her to send him in Vegas with handsome money in his wallet. Swoosh and he was gone. Now the other junior officer was even more impatient. He requested her to send him to Hawaii with hotel booking for a month. Swoosh and gone. The senior officer was watching all this magic happening in front of his eyes. He said in a very solid voice " I want both these idiots back in the office after break".
Please everyone, let's stop dignifying Marg's comments with any more responses and focus on the positives. We all know there is no "I" in team. Kind regards to you all and enjoy.....Sam

Evening is coming for you, Captain, and no new blog yet, snif. But we can assume everything is ok for you at these latitudes, so we are not too worried, just missing your lines as all the other addicts around!
Here we have a new grey Autumn morning. Poor light, leaves on the sidewalks. A few boats on the Seine river, but no pink one. As we stated at brakfast ten minutes ago, we are all thinking of you and of "the Line" that must be very close now.
By the way, your new track map is beautiful, and the last pink marks more than encourageing.
GO princess, GO! Luv U!
I think Jessica is lucky people are supporting her and i think this will make history and just saying Jess U ROCK !!!

Hi Jessica, I have been off line for a few days and am glad to be home to catch up with your blog. I must say I enjoy reading of your adventures everyday, it is good to know you are up on the first aid, you will need a few bandaids here and there but you will cope I know. Like so many thousands of others I will watch your trip but will also look forward to the day you come home and I will be there at Sydney Harbour to cheer you on in through the heads. When the going gets a little tough try to remember all the people you have inspired through your efforts. You are one very gutsy lady. Cheeres Christine - Tura Beach

gud luck :D
Hi jess , your blog is inspiration for people who spend most of their time in the offices , they promise themsleves to wake up early and take exercise , come home on time and spend some time with the family. All year think to spend few weeks entirly with family on a hill station but every time there is some dead line to meet.Their youth dreams have already faded and they have become machines. For them miracles do not exist and they have stopped believing in themsleves. They haven't breathed to full capacity since weeks because meals are always half digested. They wake up and start same life again every day. No hope to escape. Just keep going 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM , six days a week and some time for office on Sundays as well.
Hello Mrs Watson,
Thank you for everything, and forst for being a magical Mum for your unbelievable daughter.
I have a tiny question: Is the handwriting "Jessica Watson" on the site's homepage actually written by Jessica's hand, by somebody else's or painly computer generated?
Go, Mum, Go! What a girl you have!
Hello Julie,
I was very touched by the poignant "60 minutes video".I especially liked when you said "problem child" under your breath!
I wish you and your family all the best, and that Jess gets back safe!
