All's Well and a Busy Day

Been a bit of a busy day and time got away from me so I'll keep today's update short. Just wanted to let you know that all's well. More than well really, as we've been getting along so nicely out here. Loving every moment!
The wind’s been sitting on about 15knots from the south east so Ella's Pink Lady is sitting on a close reach plodding along at a steady 6knots. After passing reasonably close to Minerva reef(below Tonga and Fiji) this morning, I've been spotting and passing quite a few yachts so that's kept me vigilante on deck. Other than that, I've been pouring over charts and forecasts again, chatting to a few people on the sat-phone and keeping up with chores and a little maintenance.

Hi Jesse,

Good to hear ya still doin' well. At least you have some company of sorts along the North East Pacific Ocean Highway! LOL

Do you say hello to the other yachts or have a chat on the radio as you pass each other? How was your dinner last night - what did you spoil yourself with?

I looked up Minerva Reef on Google Earth and the only thing close to that spelling is Minerve Reef West North West of Pitcairn Islands. Is that the reef that you mean?

So what's in store with you weather wise over the next couple of days, are you expecting much of the same, nice steady breezes pushing you along comfortably?

We are copping a bit of a heatwave tomorrow, expected top of around 35 degrees at Caves Beach, lucky for me that I only have to walk about 100 metres to reach the surf - think I will be taking advantage of that tomorrow.

Anyway, will keep it short tonight myself, pretty busy at work after spending all day in Sydney seeing docs, getting pictures taken of my wrist, organising possible surgery etc - all the fun stuff! Maybe golf is too hard for me and I will have to take up sailing!

Please continue to look after yourself and keep having a good ol' time.

HERE'S A LITTLE JOKE FOR YA!

Two people are out sailing when suddenly a hand appears in the sea.

"What's this?" asked the skipper, "It looks as if someone is drowning!"

"No," explained his crew, "It's just a little wave."

Just letting you know us night-owls are pretty busy too, lol.
It's tough going this week keeping up with the footy in England and Japan, as well as your quest. Bonsoir.

The Equator is getting closer hay. Really great reading your blogs mate. Back here in WA we are real close to starting the grain harvest. In about 2 weeks from now we will all be bloody sick of the flies & heat & dust and breakdowns etc so your tales of the sea will be like a fresh sea breeze to us. Will tell you about harvest as it goes allong cause you'll probably miss the heat & Dust & even the flies by the time you've been at it for a couple of months.
Keep on truckin man

I have been following you on your website. I am so proud to see that someone of your youth has the courage and willpower to follow your dream. There are too many of todays youth that think the world ends with a video game. Safe sailing and hope to see you back in Sydney in 7 months.

You sound in great spirits! Although it may cause a little more work and maneuvering, it must be uplifting to see other boats once in a while.
One would imagine the water is getting warmer and as you get closer to the equator your daylight hours are most likely shortening as well. Here in Oregon, USA, we like it best in the summer months when the sun rises at 5am and set just after 9pm. It seems we get more living in during the longer days.
Keep up the god work Jess. Oh one last thing, we have enjoyed getting to know your sailing and nautical terms. It seem there is a lesson in each of you blogs. Today we are learning about "reach."
Blessings,
See ya sailor!

Hi Jessica, it is just so wonderful to tune into your blog and read how well it is all is going for you on this wonderful adventure of yours, if a day goes by with no blog there's many of us who do worry, guess we shouldn't really and we know some days you will very busy on the deck as you mention. Okay, looking at my atlas I see there's many small islands around the area you're sailing into and I guess many rocky outcrops so you need to be on guard but hey who I am to tell you this when I know zilch about sailing and you're the one demonstrating to us your great sailing and navigation skills. Keep safe Jessica, we don't mean to sound like nagging mothers all us bloggers telling to keep safe, we just care for your safe and victorious return.

HAPPY SAILING!!!

G'day Jesse,

Good to know that you are going well. I have been playing with Google Earth trying to map your path to date, glad you don't have to rely on me to navigate for you!!

I'm glad that you have been kept busy, not with school work I assume!

It was really great to read some of the posts in reply to your last report and just see how many people comment on how much of an inspiration you are and how you are encouraging people.
You really are an amazing person, no head swells, but you show what can be achieved if you believe in yourself and believe in what you are doing and surround yourself with people who are supportive.

I can't wait to read your book! Your reports are just great and you can tell us so much in so few words. I guess you will have thousand of new 'friends' by the time you finish your journey.
It would be great if people would write to you as you influence their lives and tell you how you have helped them.
Jesse, keep safe, I continue to pray for you. God bless.

I shared your blog on my fb page and was amazed at the response's i received. Some people actually thought it was irresponsible of your parents to let you go on this trip.

With so many of today's youth off doing lord knows what, and you out there following your dreams it's hard to understand how people can be so negative.

I wish you the best of luck, and want to let you know that there are many more who support what you are doing.

I'm sure your life will never be the same now, and for the better because of the realization that your life is for the living and doing now, not for when you are older, or any other excuse.

You are truly an inspiration.

Good luck from a fellow wind worshipper!

And keeping busy is so important!

I have read the book also. Very inspiring!

You're doing great. Been reading up on what has been happening on your trip, very interested. First time posting.

I do have a question for you... What do you do to keep yourself occupied all day. I know you have music, eating, etc. But what sorts of things on the boat do you need to do to keep it all up and running? I picture it being pretty boring actually after some time, but think, being alone on the see would be facsinating at times.

Maybe you can tell us more about what sorts of things you need to do to actually keep her afloat.

Also, maybe it's not such a good question to ask, but are you equiped to handle pirates and attackers? I hope and pray nothing happens to you, but maybe your parents equiped you with some alcohol and cigarettes to give them as gifts so maybe they will leave you alone? It's also ok not to tell us, as it is quite a dangerous aspect of your journey. Just wondering.

Anyway I wish you all the best, you seem happy, you seem you are doing well. Keep going, you will make it!!!!!!!!!!

Jesse, I have followed your blog daily since a few weeks before you left Sydney. I thought I had a pretty good idea of who you were from reading and following. I decided to go back to the archive blogs on your site and start from the first one, in May 2008, when you were still 14, a week before your fifteenth birthday. After reading every one up until today I am even more amazed at the person you are. Very few people in the world today have your desire, passion, dreams, intelligence, common sense and charm. It comes across vividly after having read these blogs. Dirt biking(motorcycle), rock climbing (you were amazing in your description of how to do it) camping, all the incredible training such as your visit to the New Zealand rescue group, diesel training, navigation training, safety training and how to use a life raft. Most of all, you flying around by yourself the whole year you were 15 years old volunteering for crews of boats and getting experience that includes the southern ocean. Your humor in describing your dad taking out and walking with the old toilet on the refit was hysterical. You were also funny describing how excited you were to gain a little weight (and not in your hips!) which meant it must be muscle! You showed your feminine side in worrying about losing the clothes you had carefully laid out for an interview, not to mention getting teased about the razor to shave your legs! I thought the best was the guys telling you to get the 12V hairdryer so you can get all dolled up when you go around the horn (we will be looking for that!). It clearly comes across how mature you are. When you think about all the meetings and marketing pitches you made, not typical of a teenager for sure. You were always meeting with adults as peers it sounds like. Huge credit goes to your mom and dad for believing in you, supporting you, and giving you the freedom to pursue your dreams. It also sounds like this is your second year of correspondence schooling so you could prepare for the trip. It seems one night you actually watched television and aptly described it as mindless. Good for you as it does not fit your desire to be active. In summary, Jesse, you are incredible! I personally will be happy when you arrive back safe and successfully, but sad if it means we lose touch with your blog and knowing you through your writing.

Hi Jessica,
Sailing away to distant horizons beyond the edge of any charts to the undiscovered country - she comes back to us a different being...( just something I was playing around with - haven't finished it yet....)

I've been listening to "Shiver me Timbers" by Tom Waits, thanks to 'Gustav' for bringing that song to my attention, quite appropriate and very nice, also there are some tracks my Eve Cassidy that are kind of fitting, "Over the Rainbow" and "Fields of Gold" but then Sting's "Valparaiso" works too, all amazing tracks that could easy fit to film footage of Jessica sailing the seas done in a kind of slow motion...goose bumps stuff.

Anyway...Jesse, I've managed to be able to plot you on Google Earth now....are you aware they the Ocean depth where you are is averaging 4 Kilometers!...very soon coming up on a Trench that's something like 7 Kilometers deep, that gives me sweaty harms, I've never been keen on deep water, but that's DEEP, can you imagine being on Ella's Pink Lady looking over the edge of the boat down at the water thinking that 4 to 7 Kilometers down is the bottom!....whew!...at least that's what Google earth is telling me...does that ever bother you Jess?....deep water, I mean really deep water, so deep that its very deep!....:]...*gulp*....anyway you're making progress that's the main thing...

Summersailor said: Way go Jesse + see you got things well in hand. I got a technical question. Why have a tiller vs a wheel steering system? The tiller is harder to steer in heavy weather vs the wheel, if your auto pilot breaks down at the most in-opportune time. Is it because there is less parts with a tiller vs a wheel(pulleys + cables etc? I know you obviously probably won't have time to answer, but that is the only reason I could see. It looks like your auto pilot system, with the back up spare parts is sufficient and very strong, so hopefully you won't get in a situation, where you will have to manually steer her in heavy seas. Well girl keep sailing along and enjoying yourself. Your parents are so lucky to have a daughter like you. :-D

Good Morning Jessica,
It's morning for me in West Virginia (10:30). Just got up and had to check to see what news was available. Glad to see that everything is going well. It must be nice to see other people on the water even if you don't communicate with them. But it does make you want to be more alert. Good for you, or as you would say "good onya". Yes? I don't have the reef marking but I do have Fiji and Tonga on the Google Map. So I can see where you are, roughly. Who needs longs/lats? I guess to really pinpoint your exact location it would be necessary. Yes, it looks like you have had a busy day. Glad to see you are keeping on top of things, maintenance and so on. Keep it up and stay alert, eyes upon the yachts. Are you close enough that they wave or call out to you, or do you use any kind of a signal flag? (Is that a dumb question LOL)? Enjoy yourself and be safe.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Jess,
Good to see that you are busy!

I think we all understand that it might be a bit of a risk to give your exact position, so we understand that you choose to only give a rough position.

But for us sailors it would be very exciting to get a regular update on the situation on board, like weather, wind speed and direction, wave height and boat speed.
Maybe it is possible to show that somewhere?

Keep on Rocking!

Hey Jess,
Ella’s Pink Lady theme song?
Sung using the music from “Drift Away”.
Hope you like it!

Day after day I’m more enthused
Yes I look for the light through the poring rain
You know that’s a game that I hate to lose
But I ain’t feelin’ no strain, it ain’t a shame

Oh, come sail with me Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away
Sail over the sea, Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away

Beginning to think that she’s chasin’ time
People don’t understand the thing she do
The sea outside looks so unkind
Jesse’s counting on you. Oh Ella carry her through

Oh, come sail with me Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away
Sail over the sea, Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away

And when my mind is free
There’s no angry sea can move me
When I’m feelin’ blue
The email’s comin’ through to soothe me

Thanks for the places you’re taken me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Rythm and rhyme and harmony
Parkers trailin’ along, guiding Pink Lady on

Oh, come sail with me Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away
Sail over the sea, Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away

Oh, come sail with me Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away
Sail over the sea, Ella, free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and sail away

Won’t you take me away...?

"I have lent myself to thy will, O Sea !
To the urge of thy tidal sway;
My soul to the lure of mystery,
My cheek to the lashing spray.

Amazing how busy we can be when we are all alone and we have no one but ourselves to be held accountable to. Sometimes the busiest work can be just finding the time to sit still, just be and just listen. I have really found just "being" is harder than "doing" and I an working on this everyday. I alerted my daughter to what you are doing. She currently lives in Japan and is a bit of a world traveler herself -- but she has crewed only on big ships. Reading about your adventures on a 34 footer heading for the Roaring Forties simply blew her away! We both check the blog daily. Thrilling -- even though we are just living vicariously and you're doing the work! Continued smooth sailing from both of us.

Brooding over the charts is always a worthwhile occupation; One can do it for hours and come to no conclusion because you never know where wind and drift may actually take you. ;)

Hi Jessica!

I pop in every now and then to read about your progress, and see that you are safe. I am so impressed by your courage to do this all by your self. Doesn't it ever get scary? Do you have technique to see if bad weather is approaching, and avoid it as best can? How old were you when you started sailing? You must have some massive experience to do this trip. I hope you are having the time of your life - it must be such a cool feeling to realize that you are living your dream and doing it well. :-)

All the best to you, and keep safe!

Hi Jesse,

How are you ? ... I've missed writing to you a couple of days because I was away for the weekend and didn't have access to a PC. As usual it sounds like you are having A REAL BALL !!! . . .

It was great to read about The power Systems' on Ella's Pink Lady: No .. It Wasn't Boring At All. How's the School Work Going ? ... LOL ...I can't wait to See The Tracking System Up & Running. It's going to be Great to be able to see where you are as you Sail Along.

The Photo of you sitting at The Toughbook looks Great. You look So Happy and Fresh. Too bad about the Misjudgement on Leaving The hatch open ... OOPS!! ...LOL... I bet you won't do that again.

I said on my previous Comment that I am going to try and contact some other Fans Who love You (around the world) and see if we can get some Photos of you as you pass their locations. I haven't had a chance to do that yet, because My PC keeps Disconnecting from The Internet. I'll let you know what the outcome of this plan is when I have any more news on it.

Anyway Jesse, I better go now, It's now about 4:50am Tuesday morning. I'm not usually up at this hour, but I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep, so I thought ... "I Know! ... I'll Go And Say Hello To Jessica !!!" . . .

Glad to hear it's relatively smooth sailing. Hope it's not seawater you've been pouring over the charts ! (just kidding).
Incidentally, Minerva was the goddess of poetry and the inventor of music. So in honour of her, here are a few lines to keep you going...

"I have lent myself to thy will, O Sea !
To the urge of thy tidal sway;
My soul to the lure of mystery,
My cheek to the lashing spray.
For there's never a man whose blood runs warm
But would quaff the wine of the brimming storm.
As the prodigal lends, have I lent to thee
For a day or a year and a day."

Hee-hee, that's funny you say you've been "pouring over charts" because I was *trying* to write you a poem last night, and I had that phrase in there (musically rhythymical little phrase, hah? NOT). But my Internet went down and won't be fixed until next Saturday, since we can't take off work to meet the pesky Internet providor people. I say "pesky" because it really seems to us like it is something on their end...like they turned off our service, because it's our extra channels on the tv also and both are provided by "FIOS".
So, since I was creating it in Word on my home computer, I think you'll have to wait until my Internet is fixed for the poem. Trust me, it's no loss. :-)
Glad all is well. Is it kind of a relief to see boats once in awhile--or do you favor the solitude?
Take care & blessings,

Hi Jessica,
I was a little disappointed when you were on Thursday Night Live and I didn’t think I’d get to see you, but I checked out your video’s and lo and behold there you were. I’m sooooooooo happy. (Sound like a little kid don’t I) You were great, and so relaxed. I noticed your compass in the porthole was doing it’s rock and roll routine. I caught another interview and I think it was at the Boat Show and I was so proud of how you handled yourself. No sweat, no strain. So very composed. Jessica, for a 16 year old, you sure have got your act together. Kudo’s to Mum and Dad for raising such a special daughter.
I just did a little research on Minerva Reefs and that’s scary. Be careful, I’m praying for you.
Stay safe and alert and enjoy.

May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi, Jess,

Truly awesome hearing from you. Well done! Short notes are okay, too.

A quick note for your wellwishers: Many of you have questions that can be answered if you take the time to read Jessica's blog archives. They're fascinating. She also took video of dolphins jumping during one of her sails last year (foxhole's request).

Love the Drift Away song version.

A number of you have commented on not seeing your blogposts. I've figured out the rhythm of Jess's posts (at least for now, in relatively fair seas). For those of us in the US, Jess's posts are coming about every 36 hours or so. OUR posts are made after her blog master has WOKEN UP! He's not working through the night. Every "comment" I've sent (one or two every day since Jess left) has been posted, sometimes attached with a previous blog. So, there's no need to send your letter twice. Our letters are being well-managed.I'm hoping Jess is seeing them but I don't assume anything since she has so much concentrating to do.

Go Jess!! Believing in you, ALL THE WAY!

Hi Jessica,

You're doing fantastic!

No doubt you know the story of the Eagle living the live of a chicken.
There are a lot of variations on this story. One of them goes like this.

There ones was an indian brave that was walking down the trail when he found an eagles egg that had fallen out of it's nest. He looked up and saw that the nest was too high for him to return the egg. So he placed the egg in a nearby prairie chicken nest.
When the egg hatched, the little eagle thought he was a prairie chicken.Prairie chickens stay on the ground and eat only worms and grubs. So as the eagle grew, he ate nothing but worms and grubs and walked around with the other prairie chickens.
One day he looked up in the sky and saw some eagles soaring high above. He asked one of the prairie chickens,"How can they fly up there while we are down here eating worms and grubs?"
The prairie chicken answered,"They are the eagles, they can do that but we must stay down here. We are prairie chickens and that is what we do."
So the eagle spent the rest of his life on the ground eating worms and grubs because he was told that was all he could do.

Jessica, we behind our desktops, in our confi homes, are the prairie chickens, you, living our dream, are the eagle high in the sky.

But inspite of this uplifting story don't forget to wear your harness and tie up when outside. I ones fell overboard on a quiet anchorage.

Keep Safe,

Arnold van Cauwenberghe

Hi Captain Jesse. Sorry I have not blogged for the past view days. I have three beautiful children and they certainly keep me busy. Really enjoying your blogs, photos and video reports. Hey what’s this schoolwork thing?

Mark Twain once said – “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education."

As supported by many other bloggers the amount you are learning (and teaching us) and the character building this voyage will impose on you, with will far out do any classroom education.

Stay safe special girl, we are all right behind you.

Kind regards, James and family

Hi Jessica,

I am SO glad to hear you are doing well. Ive made your blog my homepage as I want to track your progress & know that you're ok. We actually passed you by in your boat one day on the Gold Coast near paradise point, when you were going in for repairs.
I just finished reading "Wolf" its about a German Raider ship that terrorised the oceans waters for just over 1 year during World War 1. Its an amazing story & if you ever get to read it I think you'll enjoy it as you will have passed over many spots mentioned in the book. Its actually a story about incredible luck too, so I want to wish you 'Nerger's' luck and I look forward to tracking your progress. sending a prayer for your protection :)

Jessica, you are doing an excellent job of sailing the Ella's Pink Lady.

1800nm in 15 Days is 120nm per day at an average speed of 5 knots per hour.

I have done some figures last night:
after Ella's Pink lady position was published on twitter, which places you about 500 km or 270 nautical miles south of Fiji.

"Jessica's latest position 23°39'59.53"S 178°54'49.98"W close to ex Republic of Minerva (Minerva reef now)"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minerva_Reefs

According to my calculations Ella's Pink lady has made good a distance of 1800nm nautical miles in the last 15 Days (as the bird flies) since Ella's Pink Lady has left Sydney on the Sunday,18 October 2009 (AEST)

1800 nautical miles divided by 15 Days is a great daily distance of 120 knots or 120 nautical miles each day.

120 knots or nautical miles divided by 24 hours is a very good average speed of 5 knots or 5 nautical miles every hour over 15 Days, even with the fist weeks slow going, due to lack of wind.

Jessica, you are doing a fantastic job
sailing Ella's Pink Lady.

zooming along just fine..

it disturbs me to see a few referneces to people giving you oranges, don't they get it ??

that someone would be so selfish to risk getting you disqualified?

it is about UNASSISTED and where is the line drawn / one day oranges, the next bananas?.........wish people would get on with their own dream and leave you alone with yours

keep a bit more to yourself Jessica or else blogger should blog out such blogs....

Always fantastic to read what you are up to and where you are at. I'm sure that you may have already covered this, but what happens when you are asleep? You can't anchor the boat and I imagine that you are still plodding along somewhere. Does the boat go auto-pilot or something? Anyways - Sail on!

Hey Jesse,

Wow! You are making great time. I bet it is different seeing other boats, but always be aware. Stay on your toes and be very careful. Keep having fun, and we are all following you all the way. Keep smiling that smile.

Hi Jesse,
Following your voyage makes me feel like I am sailing everyday! Your passion for sailing is inspiring me to venture out of the Chesapeake Bay and do some coastal sailing. This is something that I have always wanted to do, but have been reluctant to do without more experience. Well, sometimes you have to leave your comfort zone so that you can go to the next level. Thanks for posting your wind direction, sea state and point of sail. It really helps me visualize your reality. You are one with the sea.

All the best!

Hi Jessica
I just looked up Minerva Reef on the net, what a place for a stop over (not for you). You couldn't get place more remote and untouched than this, may get there one day.
So would you ever consider a stopover in place like this if the weather was bad ahead, is this allowed in the rules. You need some time out for a rest I reckon.
So keep having fun and keep safe.

Dear Miss Watson,
Let me explain my delight to hear that you have disposed of the last orange in your supplies in an honourable way by consuming it. It is nothing more disgusting than the malignant odours of such a food item decomposing in an undetectable location of your efficiently spaced vessel.
Wishing you always enough water under the keel to successfully complete this epic journey
Yours sincerely
