Christmas in the Middle of Nowhere!

It's still been pretty foggy and gray out here but we've been able to make good progress with 15 knots of wind from the west. Both the air and sea temperatures have dropped a few more degrees and this morning we pretty much sailed right over Point Nemo, which is known for being the point of ocean furthest from any land. You really could say that I'll be spending Christmas in the middle of nowhere!

With pretty steady conditions and a reasonable forecast for the next few days I took the Christmas decorations in the cabin to the next level, there's now tinsel and little bauble-balls everywhere swinging in time to Ella's Pink Lady's motion.

Well that's it from me as it's getting late and I'd better get going to bed or Santa might catch me awake, I really hope he can find me out here!

Till tomorrow!

Jesse

Hey
Merry Christmas
Looks like I am the first to wish you on the 25th December.
I have been following your journey since the start but more closely since my holidays started after I finished school.
This is my first comment but I will post more during the voyage.
Good Luck

Jesse,
It has been so long since i have written. I kind of hope you aren't able to read enough of the comments to have noticed :)
20 days to the cape, that's awesome! I've had a really bad cold and just haven't been keeping up. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas! I'll be spending mine with my mother, brother, and grandmother. And of course we'll be thinking of you.
That was some electrical glitch you had! That sounds like a pretty important piece of equipment. Did you find the source of the issue so it doesn't happen again?
What'd you have for Christmas dinner? Have a wonderful day!!

Luke 2:6-8
6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Good morning, Jesse! Your latest two posts can't help but conjure up the images of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, who was born far from home, of all places in a stable, because there was no room available for Him in any inn. And despite a lifetime of rejection, wandering without a home, he sacrificed Himself for us so that we can enter into His perfect presence for all eternity. And that is Christmas! And so, no, as so many have said here, you are not and will not be alone on Christmas. He is always with you.

I am touched by the post submitted by Richard in Queensland. (12/24 @ 8:45) He says he is on his own, no parents, no family. Yes, Christmas is a hard time of year for him as he says, but again, Richard is not alone. I know I am fortunate to be in the presence of family this day, but all I can say is that I hope he, and you, will find some comfort in drawing near to Jesus on this holiday which honors the anniversary of His birth, foretelling His sacrifice for all of us.

Today I pray that you will be comforted, draw near to Him, get good rest, and enjoy good food and the generous gifts sent along on EPL with you by your family members who love you so much and who care for you and still support you now every day -- and who miss you! I am also praying that all your equipment on EPL will serve you well, for your health and warmth, and for your family and crew at home.

Wow! Since the chances of getting onto the moon are pretty small these days you can rightfully claim to have gone as far as woman can possibly go. I reckon that there's not a great many people who can say that about themselves.
And look at all those comments - You are accompanied at least mentally by a greater flock of followers than most of the great explorers.

I want to wish you, your family, your crew and team and the blog family a very Merry Christmas. And using your position in the world as a reference to represent how separated you are from loved ones during the Christmas Holiday I would like to ask everyone to pray for and reach out for those who feel that isolated, even though they may be right next door. I hope this doesn't seem to gloomy but when you mentioned your position that is what came to my heart. Hopefully the message that I am trying to convey comes through and everyone has a blessed Christmas. Looking forward to your video post. Once again learning something new(Point Nemo) thanks again Jesse for allowing us to ride along. Godspeed, Mike

Merry Christmas Jess! Has he come yet? Did you open your presents? What did you get? The first time I tried to catch him, I only wanted to say hi! I put fishing line from across the chimney to my room with a bell on it. It didn't work! I used to set a mouse trap and wait behind the couch. Not to hurt him but just so he'd go "Ouch" or something and wake me up. That didn't work either! Could never catch the Easter Bunny either!

It's amazing where you are Jess! (Nemo) You'd have a good perspective of the size of the planet from your voyage I guess.

Have a great day Jess and I hope the weather gives you a bit of a break out there for Christmas.

Can't wait to see what you've done to your pink Lady. lol

If you see the big feller don't tell him about the trip wire and don't feed him cookies. (Just weet bix with skim milk for him).

Be extra safe today little buddy cause everyone's going to be swamping you and everyone's also doing Christmas. The countries are congested.

Proud of you Jesse.

Thanks heaps for a great Christmas!

I think it's really risky to sail around so all alone the world.
Wow, you're really brave!!! 
What I do find a bit sad is that you need to celebrate today as Christmas all alone. 
So I wanted to let you know that you celebrate in any case alone!!! 
I'm going the whole day thinking of you and praying for you!!! 
I wish you a merry and blessed Christmas!!! 

Skip,O'hoy,Captain Jessica.First of all.Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Or as we say where I come from.God Jul og et Godt Nyttår.I hope with the grace of G-d that you not have to endure another Christmas like this,I can image the whole ting even I'm shure it will be a god one for you.You will see Santa in the form of an Albatross and that Santa dont need Rudolf.I spendt 30 Christmas at sea and all was perfect but one,it was on Lpg/Tanker Mundogas Atlantic we was outside the coast of Venezuela, weather was a little breasy ,its was around 7PM on Chrismas eve and we have all sat down for Christmas dinner, everybody have theyr nicest outfit on.Suddently the alarm is going,Oil On Deck.In a few minutes the guys was out on deck in raingear rubberboots with strong hoses and tried to get rid of the oil that was covering the whole deck, what a show that was, slippery deck and rubberboots, not a good combination the boys was fish tailing all ower the place when they used theyr hoses.Even the Captain who was watching the whole ting from the bridge got oilspots on his white shirt. We was done with oilcleaning around 4AM and the next night we had a perfect Christmas. When all this happen we had two men up on on the bridge, one first offiser and one lookout and in the engine we had one motor man, this guy was moving engine fuel from one tank to another and that little Grinch forgot(or did he)to stop when the tank was balanced, the tank was overfilled and the fuel come out on deck from the tankvent just behind the forcastlehead on starbord side, well you know the rest of the story.Jessica,G-dspeed and happy sailing. Hi Jessica,
You might be in the middle of nowhere, but you are definitely not alone.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU JESSICA.
I hope you are enjoying your presents, now that you finally get to open them. I’m curious to find out what you got.
I don’t know if you posted it or not but I haven’t seen your latest video yet (???). I’m anxious to see your decorated cabin, that you made sound so Christmassy. (??)
Sorry to see that you’re still in the fog, but with the wind picking up it just may blow it away, hopefully.
I can’t stop admiring you for what you have accomplished, and what you have done for all us “landlubbers”.
Continue with the good work, and God Bless you, Jessica.

For Samurai:
Thank you for that warm and beautiful post, as only you could present it.
Keep ‘em coming!!! I always enjoy them. I think I’m going to start collecting them in a file. Ha, ha gotcha. LOL………
Take care Sam.

I'll bet the Shore Crew gets swamped today, kudo's to them all for a job well done.
Merry Christmas to them all and Mum,Dad and family.
Enjoy the day and I’ll be looking forward to the video’s and your next blog.
Always proud of you and always thinking of you.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I will keep you in my prayers.

Merry Christmas, Jessica! Rudolph specializes in navigating fog! You have brought all of us together from all over the world. I have not felt such international unity since Mass in St. Peter's in Vatican City years ago. Some of us have nominated you to be Australian of the Year even though some of us are not Aussies. (Our 12-week old puppy who sleeps under my chair while I have coffee and blog time is part Aussie, part border collie, but that's as close as we get.) We admire you so much. Merry Christmas to your Family and Team, too!

May your armchair cruiser grinches on another blog busy judging the EPL team's motives get coal in their stockings, lose their TV remotes and be required to lose enough weight to climb their masts for the first time, until they find their way to proper research of facts and the joy of sailing again. Why do some folks refuse to be inspired?

Some of the comments on your blog site turn me into a mush pot, even though this is supposed to be serious sailing business! I had a close look at WunderGround weather this a.m.. I see your fog and I see you have a good opening for awhile. Your timing on this expedition is incredible. The Kiribati Islands are a mess right now. Glad you're done with that part! Last night I was reading about the rhythm of weather around Cape Horn and its more still times. Our prayer for you is that your good fortune on timing will continue to give you favorable wind, currents, and comfortable temps...to jingle all the way! Love, Your Pink Fan Family in 18 degree F. Hello Captain Jesse,
Just an idea for you about how to consider the fog surrounding Ella's Pink Lady: it has been ordered by your enthusiastic fans... and just there, behind the curtain, all close to you, are your adopted parents and friends are hiding, silent, forming a huge circle of people, like a large crowded stadium... and all of a sudden, on Christmas time, the fog will disappear and we shall all be singing carols for you.
Maybe not true, but in spirit, you can be sure it is not far from the reality.

Hi Jessica,

It is Christmas morning here, in Victoria, Australia, and I am just getting ready to start the BBQ to cook our traditional family pork. It takes hours to cook but the result is usually delicious.

Reading your blog this morning about you being at Point Nemo, I thought you feel like "you must be in heaven".

Wavy Gray from the rock band "Grateful Dead" screamed out "I must be in heaven man" when he was touched on his shoulder by his idol B. B King at Woodstock, oh so many years ago. Wavy, a peace activist and great entertainer was exactly where he wanted to be, hence his ecstatic remark.

You are exactly where you want to be now. SO I thought that Wavy's ecstatic remark is so befitting to you at this time. You are in the middle of the largest single body of living ocean on Earth, with perhaps millions of people around the world hanging on to every word you write. We are with you in our thoughts. You are not alone. Jessica "You must be in Heaven Girl".

We are proud of you and we are thinking of you this Christmas.

Lots of hugs and love from

Dear Jessica,
We wish for you the most lovely Christmas you will remember all your life: This one on open ocean, just you, your little boat and the sea.
We hope you enjoy the peace of nature and we are praying for your safe journey and most wonderful outcome!
Last year my husband and I spent Christmas bobbing around the British Virgin Islands on a catamaran (so steady and with Christmas carols/music Caribbean style steel drums and so much joy in the songs), but I forgot to take a small string of Christmas (fairy) lights. I hope you remembered yours!
God bless you, your faithful ship and all your crew!
And Merry Christmas with love from Vancouver, Canada.

Hi, Skipper! This is Claudio from Santos, Brazil, wishing you, your family, your team and good old ELP a wonderful Christmas! Don't worry about Santa, his GPS is state-of-art and you've been a good girl, so he'll find you (although being where you've wanted to be all those years, and safe and going well, is the greatest gift you could get, I guess). And in lack of a chimney you can always tie your sock on the mast... Santa will have a harder time here, for he wears heavy clothing and now it's pretty warm in Southeast Brazil. Quite different form Point Nemo, which I and lots of people did not even knew existed until we read your blog. Another line crossed, well done! All the best for you, Jessica, and keep safe as you prepare to hold the bull by the Horn. May the Birthday Boy bless you and hold you in His right hand always. Big hug!

My thoughts are with you and you are the first person that I have said hello to today as my kids won't be out of bed for a while yet.

It must be pretty eerie in all this fog - are you sure you haven't heard any roars from a large gorilla? I wouldn't worry about this large gorilla that might be in your neighbourhood - I hear that King Kong likes the blondes! LOL

You will have to send us a pic of the Ella Pink Lady Christmas Float!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This is a wonderful, one-of-a-kind, historic Christmas for you! So, may Christmas Day 2009 be especially merry and bright for you out there on the beautiful Southern Ocean waters!

Along with many others, I'd like to send special Christmas greetings to your parents and family as well as your support team --we don't hear much about you who are behind the scenes, but we know you are there, doing your special work to guide Jessica onward toward the goal. Thank You and, Merry Christmas to all of you!

Christmas is the time of year for gift giving....the only visible gift I can give to you, Jessica, is sending cheerful greetings and notes of encouragement to you. That utterly pales by comparison with your gift to me (and your Internet community)....your gift of taking me along on your incredible journey. Thank you for being so thoughtful, so generous, so real. Thank you for being you!

Have a joyful and blessed Christmas day!

YOU GO GIRL!
Hugs and prayers,

Here's the words from my second article today on your trip.

As she tries her best to be festive in her cramped surroundings, complete with Christmas decorations and a stuffed animal choir of mute companions, 16 year-old sailor, Jessica Watson will celebrate Christmas Eve alone aboard her pink sailboat in the open ocean.

Ms. Watson has ample reason to be grateful and celebrate this Christmas. She is living out a dream she has had for years and has some significant numbers to ponder.

She's travelled nearly 8,000 nautical miles since her late October departure from Sydney, Australia, She is now over 1/3 of the way toward her goal of a solo circumnavigation of over 23,000 miles. For 67 days, she has had no human contact except for satellite phone conversations and emails. She's seen a bit of man-made trash in the ocean and a few boats from afar, but not a human face in over two months.

She's a bit over 1,900 nautical miles from the next imporrtant milestone in her trip - rounding the tip of South America at Cape Horn.

While she may be physically alone, she has the best wishes of thousands of well wishers from all over the globe.

Happy Christmas on ya, Ms. Jessica.

Also have a question. According to the tracker, you seem to have sailed a more easterly course on Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21th. If that is so, was there any particular reason to do so? Or is it just a Google Earth inaccuracy?
Safe course and good luck,

And when totaled by the lot
May you find all you've been given
To be more than what you sought

May your journeys be short, your burdens light
May your spirit never grow old
May all your clouds have silver linings
And your rainbows pots of gold

May all your dreams come true
May you have a Merry Christmas friend

MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR;
''YOUNG LADY OF THE SEA'':
Hi,Jessica;
Sounds like your xmas decorations are swaying as you and the ''Pink Lady'' sail along with the winds.
It makes the spirits brighter I always said when the decorations go up,have all way's have them up right after our American Thanksgiving here in the US.
I am waiting anticipation on the start of the ''Sydney to Hobart'' on Boxing Day,you should see how difficult it is to explain to my American mates what it's all about.
I am sure allot of the crews will be thinking of you while they race down the coast, sounds they are going to have a wet start.
PLEASE LET YOUR ''WORLD FAMILY'' KNOW WHAT 'SANTA' BROUGHT YOU.
I would gather by now with us being a day behind you,he has already touch down, hope you left him some room on your deck or maybe he made a smooth water landing while you where asleep.
Xmas eve rush is about over now and the rush home get ready for the big day,I put a Pink ribbon on my ''Charlie Brown'' on my dinette table with your name on it,so you will be in my thoughts on the day.
We are expecting some ice and sleet to start our day,but I don't have far to travel to family.
I await your next message to hear about all your ''goodies''.
Be safe, stay warm and bring out your stuffy crew so they can enjoy the day,my best wishes for day of spirit of the season, remember we are with you all the way, just think the stories you will have on your next xmas on land.
MERRY XMAS/HAPPY NEW YEAR from your US family, our thoughts will be about you when we gather.
Hugs and much joy to you and your ''stuffy crew''.

Merry Christmas!! My boyfriend is a sailor and I bite my nails to the quick every time he goes out of the harbor! He's been sailing since he was about 9, he's 24 now. He's been almost all over the world, but never solo. Mainly raced 26' - 42' sailboats in the Charleston, SC to Bermuda races and has sailed down most of the Atlantic.

What you are doing is mind blowing, gutsy and 100% fantastic! I thought becoming a professional ballerina at 16 was ballsy, and then retiring to become a filmmaker at 22. What you are doing is certainly setting the bar high for girls your age (and mine) to get out there and grab life by the horns and make dreams realities.

Have a wonderful Christmas! Keep living the dream, and I'm rooting for you every step of the way!! You go girl!

Have a holly jolly Christmas Jess,
it's the best time of the year!
I don't know if there'll be sun,
but have a cup of cheer!!

Anyway, we are all so proud of you this Christmas--For all that you have accomplished so far, and all that you have yet to accomplish. I know honey, you are feeling alone out there...but we are ALL on that boat with you, keeping you lots of company.

There are a lot of us out there that are either totally alone or semi-alone this holiday...myself, I am one of them who is trying so hard to stay focused on the reason for the season...but after working 6 hours this Christmas Eve and now I am doing laundry & dishes will be next on the agenda...it is tough. Fortunately, we have you Jess, who is bringing all of us who are alone, together.

To make my holiday just a little tougher this year was the news I got yesterday that my cataract has gotten severely worse over the last few months and the other eye has started one. Now as I turn 50 next yr, I am now going to be faced with the challenge of experiencing my first ever surgery and it will be on my eyes.... rather scarey stuff for an amateaur outdoor photographer. I know that cataract surgery is suppose to be a walk in the park when it comes to any type of a surgery....but it's a surgery just the same and I am scared.... Anyway, what's really cool about you Jess is that your eyes are strong and bright...and you are so excitedly sharing with us through such great descriptive words what you are so lucky enough to be experiencing....anyway, by the end of next year, both of my eyes will be just as good as new, and I will be able to read without any problems, your book when it comes out....and re-experience your journey once again. Actually Jess, you are really giving many of us courage to do things that we would not normally be able to do, and yes, I am sure you are scared at times, but you understand that worrying won't get you back to Aussy. I really admire you. God has blessed you with such a load of strength, wisdom, and courage... many of us are praying we gain the same things in life to keep us going on our journey.

Anywho, I am rambling...I wish you a very Merry Christmas Jessica. Just like the star that shown brightly in Bethelem--that guided Mary & Joseph on their journey of love, may that same star, guide you on your journey of love. May God Bless you, may He keep you safe, and may He bless you with deep inner peace this Christmas. Kaleen from Erie, PA / USA
