Eastward

The temperature is hardly cold anymore and Ella's Pink Lady and I am now far enough north to avoid the worst of the nasty weather systems to the south (not that we couldn't still cop a storm anywhere). So it's time to start making some serious ground to the east. Go too much further north and we would risk losing the prevailing westerly winds that mean easy sailing and good progress.

With only 2300nm till we pass under The Cape of Good Hope and Africa we're getting pretty close to being half way across the Atlantic already. Time flies when you're having fun!

There's really not too much new and exciting to report from out here, just that all's well. I'm still loving every moment, enjoying all the little things. I've still been finishing up a few jobs from after the storm and yesterday I made the most of some sunshine to catch up of some washing - the rigging and lifelines make a great washing line!

With everyone back home back to school (sorry guys!) it's probably time that I have a go at finding where I stowed my school work too.

It looks like I'll be in this calm patch for a while longer so we should have quiet sailing and hopefully good progress for a while longer.

Jesse

Hiya Jesse,

Gee it's good to hear from ya. Fancy you not going to school, betcha your laughing your head off, doing the happy dance. Your brother and sisters would be so jealous. Nicky Nicky Nah Nah!! Don't search for school work, it will find you eventually...!!

Go the sunshine !! I hope you took a photo of EPL with washing all over her. I am all for avoiding the nasty stormy 'steel bending' stuff from down south. That’s a good plan.

Since you have been away for a bit, I see all my adopted blog family are writing just for you. Poems, positive affirmations, chapters of your sailing and events, information and education about the finer details of sailing from the old salts, crusty shell sailors or is it turtle backs?. All makes for an interesting read, while you are off working hard to come back home. You even have a letter from Dunny...!!

I am hoping that Dunny is all functional now and parker has his hat on straight, and your flux capacitor is fluxing. Bent targo is going to have to stay that way eh.…anyhow …Have fun Jess, Take care, turn the music up. Thanks for the update. Cheers Paula

Hello Captain Jesse, you deserve some quiet time after the stormy passage. I am happy to read that you are progressing and enjoying, even the washing tasks!

I am afraid your school work might have been lost in the storm, hasn't it? That would really be bad luck!!!
(I feel Mum Julie's eyes rolling on me and I wish I could hide, but the cabin is so small..).
What are you supposed to study? What's the official program for your class? Cooking, washing and ornithology would be a good choice, but you may have something more... less... whatever!

Have a good sailing and sleep well while you can, as the South African capes are said to host traffic jams that will keep you awake for a few days!

You are definitely making great progress and so pleased to hear it is all fair sailing presently. You deserve it after what you've been through!

My nephew commenced high school today in Sydney but for my 17yr old daughter it is Monday to begin Yr 12. She's been hard at the books for the past week catching up on holiday homework so guess its time you did the same! I imagine there would be a fair amount of work for the 'holiday' you are having. But not too many teens will be able to stake the claim you can on your return.

Good luck gorgeous girl and stay happy and safe.

Half way around the world and you decide to hit the books! Are you a little behind on your home work?

Not to worry. You are writing the book. You are living the book.

Today's assignment: Write an essay about: "WHAT AUSTRALIA MEANS TO ME."

Whoops, the assignment ought to be: "WHAT I MEAN TO AUSTRALIA."
That would be an essay with some teeth in it.

Because you have outdistanced conventional schooling and even conventional wisdom. You have turned convention on its head.

You have not only liberated yourself, but countless others-- around the world-- whose lives are limited by lack of vision.

So hit the books, Jesse, be a good girl. Just don't believe everything you read there.

And when you get home, write your own book. It's guaranteed to be a best-seller and, eventually, a classic.

Hey there Jess, I hope you're well.
Thanks for the update...Aaaahhhh!!!
That's how it made me feel and I'm pretty sure that's exactly how you feel too after what you've just been through. Good for you, you deserve some quality R&R for a while so enjoy the moment. You're doing so very well, it's unbelieveable how far you've come/gone/sailed :-))
Isn't it a strange feeling that you get in the pit of your stomach when you're getting close to the end of something you don't want to end and how time seems to fly by all the more quickly. You're going to be a very busy girl when you get back Jess. To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed. You need to seriously prepare for it or it will drain you out. But time enough to revisit that in the next couple of months, hey? You can still cop a storm anywhere, as you said so stay alert and keep an eye and an ear open while you go about your activities of daily life afloat...washing...fishing...cooking...fishing...cleaning...fishing hahaha :-)) I can't wait to see another "Finally a fish" post from you...Atlantic Salmon, mmmmmm!!! Helllloooo brrreakfast!!!
I hope you manged to keep your school books nice and dry. Oh look, they're all soaking wet, now what's a girl supposed to do???
Hang them out on the lifelines and rigging too...maybe they'll just fly...no sorry, Aunty Sam is such a bad influence...:-)) Seriously, you are getting (IMO) the best education in life already. This is what character building is all about. There is rumour in the truth that common-sense without education is far better than education without common-sense. :-))
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this patch of quiet sailing good progress of yours and stay safe. Take good care of yourself and bye for now...Sam XX

Jessica,

You’ve really had an exciting and hectic past week. You’ve endured an intense storm, rebuilt the dunny, entertained the Prime Minister and given Richard Branson some sailing tips. You and your fine feathered and fur bearing crew definitely deserve a day for some serious R&R on Ella’s Pink Lady.

Maybe you could start off the day with a little exercise on the jogging track on the Sun Deck. Then a little trap shooting or shuffle board on the Lido Deck or just lay around the pool. Indulge yourself at dinner, but keep an eye on Big Ted if you hit the all-you-can-eat buffet. I know that he’ll stuff himself. Finish off the day by hitting the night club on the Promenade Deck for some dancing. I know that Chick-with-Attitude likes to shake a leg (or should I say shake a drumstick) and she just might want to sing a little karaoke too. And by then you’ll be ready to head back to your luxury suite on the Aloha Deck for a good night’s sleep. Sweet dreams, Jess……

Have fun, stay safe and happy sailing.

Hey Jessica! I have a BRAINTEASER for you, and have been waiting for you to reach mid Atlantic to send it. So, its known that the big hurricanes of the Atlantic start as tropical depressions off the coast of southern Africa. Low pressures in the southern hemisphere turn clockwise, and in northern hem counter clockwise. So... what happens to those storm systems as they cross the equator in the Atlantic?! No fair getting help from your weather helper in Australia! :-) Ive been following your trip from the start and sharing your site with friends and family...You are really an inspiration. GOOD LUCK!

Hi Jess, over the times I've spent in marinas I have come accross dozens and dozens of peole that are sailing around the world, although none of them have ever mentioned the words solo or non stop! Many of these sailors would have been sitting at the marina bar when you sailed out of Sydney coming up with the most outlandish reasons why you won't finish your journey. These same people were sitting at the same bar when Jesse Martin went on his little adventure and I know a couple that were there when Kaye Cottee went around!

I guess I'm taking the long way around of saying if you hadn't been knocked down or gone turtle in the bad weather then you would have been critisised by all those "Marina itis" people. I could just hear the comments now as you sail back into Sydney. "She had it easy, didn't even see a storm"!

The knock downs have made you a stronger person, you now know when the next storm approaches you can handle it (although I hope a another one doesn't find you)!

To all those "Marina itis" people out there that for some reason or another can't leave port and the reasons would be far and varied and most likely even ludicrous, I hope you can take a little of Jesse's courage and effort to put wind in your sails.

Keep up the good work girl,
Jodie, Gladstone, Qld

PS thank you to my dear friend Sea Cow for giving it a go a few years back. No "Marina itis" on your little 24ft hood!

Hi Jessica,
Glad to see that you are sailing in better weather. It must be pretty nice if you're getting your laundry done. I hope the cabin is drying out as well. You are really doing a fantastic job and them pink flags show it. Keep up the good work and like you said “time flies when you’re having fun” and I’m glad you’re having fun. You deserve it after that episode a few days ago. Abby’s coming down along the West Coast of Mexico, and sounds very happy to be out on the open seas. She’s had a few problems with her gauges but nothing serious. Team Abby is working on some electrical problem.

You sound pretty chipper, glad to see that, keep that smile on your face and that chin up. You’ll do fine Jessica, and it looks like Ella’s holding up real well, great boat. Did you let them scallywags go out in the sun for awhile?
I’m real proud of you Jessica, you’re doing a great job out there.
Just be safe and try to get some sleep in this good weather that you’re in.

Eat well, and drink, drink, drink.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.

Now that you are over half way through the challenge, have you given any thought to your next adventure? Almost anything mundane would be a real let-down, so I suspect you will have another major goal in mind. Certainly, you will be up to anything you could possibly conceive of doing! You have the real benefit of accomplishment at a young age, and I guess this will be only the first in a series of exciting and thrilling achievements.

Jessica always expect the unexpected at sea as you already know. Leave nothing controlable to chance. When it is calm and smooth sailing is the time to prepare for more challenging moments. My rule has always been while at sea, avoid going any where near the rail after dark unless necessary check on something which could interfere with trim or progress. Austin.

Yo ho ho a sailors life for me.......... so glad you are enjoying warmer weather and able to dry out. Nothing like clean laundry and sunshine to restore the mood.
Now this school thing, I would hope that your journey would give you plenty of credits. Let's see. Blogging almost everyday -more writing than most do, so the writing component is taken care. I would say sailing around the world covers geography. History ---your making it! Math and science, well anything to do with sailing the yacht, repairing, charting, navigating, weather, etc. should cover that. Computers---obvious you've got that down with all your forms of communication and instrumentation. And home ec if they still do that, you are doing it all, how many kids repair their own dunny! And that little thing called philosophy, well the journey and especially those 8 hours with knockdowns I am sure have allowed you to gain far more understanding that a text and discussion. My gosh the list isn't even finished and I say you are good to go.

Have fun, blowing steady westerlies at you.

Happy sailing from California,

Kerri

Hi Jesse,....I'd say after the excitement of the 65 knot storm, you're due some warmth, sunshine, and calm seas. Stretch that body out on the deck, feel the breeze in your hair and say: "Not bad Jessica, not bad at all....." Give yourself a good smile. Of course you still have a long ways to go and it was either Jesse Martin or Zac Sunderland who said luck is always a factor in any circumnavigational attempt. I'd say luck has been with you, not to detract from your proven abilities which are substantial. But luck needs to continue to partner with you. Stay focused and as Abby's Dad admonished her as she stepped on Wild Eyes with "Don't grow complacent!".....I bet he meant it for you too.

Glad to hear your enjoying good weather and still having fun. I read some of Abby's blogs (your still my favorite) said she had squid come on board. They make good bail for fishing. Wondering if your still trying that. A fresh fish sounds good to me. They are hard to catch here in the desert. Maybe with the good weather you can get ahead in your school work, just a thought. AHOY CAPT. JESSE

great to hear that the weather is fair. great time to catch up on those projects that need doing. we assume that you have patched the tears in the main. I always thought that Monday was washday. I suppose the wind dictates washday aboard EPL. Don't want the wash ripped to shreds while hanging on the line.

You make it sound like 2500 NM are just around the corner. Keep up the good work and enjoy your respite from the heavy weather.

Good to hear that you have good weather now and that you have done some washing. I don't think you have told anything about how much fresh water you have brought. Guess you need that for drinking and not for washing?
Here in south of Sweden we had a real blizzard yesterday with lots of traffic problems. We have a very cold winter compared to normal in northern Europe.
Good luck in your progress on the ocean.

Hi Jessica,

It sounds like you're really enjoying some fair weather sailing at the moment and hopefully conditions will stay this way for the remainder of your voyage!

Your progress so far has been quite outstanding and I'm guessing that your ETA Sydney will now be April rather than May as originally forecast. This could be a good thing as it will allow you to avoid some of the stronger cold fronts which start to hit the waters south of Australia from about mid May onwards....

Trust you are enjoying good health with your somewhat restricted diet and all is well with EPL! Would also love to see another photo or two!

Thinking of you and stay safe.

Hi, Jesse,

This is all such a great adventure for us non-sailors! Now watching Abby’s journey, too- another brave girl to “worry” about. The Cape storm was such a nail-biter! I hope Abby and "Wild Eyes" is as capable as you and EPL have proven to be. But I’m sure there are still tough challenges for you before it’s over. What a happy day when you sail safely into Sidney. Thanks to Roger & Julie for the wisdom and courage to let you take this trip.

I haven't posted in a while, mostly due to the deluge of so many wonderful supporters, I couldn't think of anything original to say!

We're very proud of you Jess! Seeing the report on the storm was a shock, so glad that you and EPL came thru it relatively well. I was really worried for the next few days that some problems may have made themselves known after it calmed down, so I am glad to hear you're on top of it all and doing well.

Great to hear that you're over halfway and heading home, it seems that the time is flying by! And I see on your video that you got a call from Richard Branson, that must have been an honor for you!

I'm sure that the last thing you want to do is get into the schoolwork, but you haven't mentioned it in some time so I'm sure it's due to be done.

I can hear the excuse now 'Oh, I WAS going to do sums, but there was this major gale I was in, hard to read when the boat's getting knocked over...." ;)

I think most teachers would give you a pass for being a little behind! lol

At any rate, be well, and fair winds. I hope the good weather continues for a while, you and EPL deserve a bit of a break!

If you can't find where you stowed it during the storm, I am pretty sure I saw it topside sliding across the solar panels during knockdown #3.

Morning Jess

What great progress you have made!

Yes please - avoid those nasty weather conditions towards the south. We do not want to go through that again! Although I have no doubt that you and Ella's Pink Lady are totally capable of handling it, it's just that I am not!!!

Onwards to the next milestones The Cape of Good Hope and Africa. You are taking us all to the most incredible places Jesse.

Good to see that you could take some time out to get the domestic chores done and even consider some homework.

Yes it's back to school for all the students and also for the dancing schools. I start teaching dancing next week. Time flies!

We had a big storm here last night in Sydney, there was a fabulous lightening show, lots of thunder and some much needed rain. The garden smells beautiful and fresh today after a soaking last night. I love storms although I am not sure that I would enjoy them so much if I was sailing out in the ocean.

Glad it's Friday Jesse!

The absence of the 'other stuff' allows a greater focus on your 'presence of self'..... the Perfect Speed of "Being There", as Chiang Seagull promoted .......
Gee, Jesse..Your school stuff is almost irrelevant in the light of your 'progression' into the Awareness that you've so enviably attained. I hope you're making copious notes in your 'source book' for your _First Book_.... :))) . _Far_ more significant than 'school stuff', though this might be a useful reflective diversion !

Go East young Lady and fair winds!! watch out for Gough Island and Tristan da cunha. You are well on the way to being across the South Atlantic now. The prevailing winds are very much in your favor (we hope)!! and there should be a much better weather outlook from now on. . Long days before the wind sailing with making the most of the following trade winds and the African drift. This was used ofcourse so much to great effect by the sailors years ago.to make their fast passages. On their way to the Far East and its tea and spices. You should now be looking forward to passing under another big land mark The cape of good hope. Nice to know that the weather is warmer for you and those cold days hopefully are behind you. Ice cold fingers and glowing cheeks are not the best for sure and some sun on your face makes things feel so much better. Its a good time to make some muffins and feed yourself with some of those goodies you have saved for later. Sleep well and now you have tidied up the cabin and made Mum happy, and everything works as it should (hopefully the dunny too!!! after its re arrangement in the storm) you will have time to relax a bit (if thats a possible thing to do when you sail alone). Take care and a safe and speedy voyage home home...ozbeachman

It's always and again exciting to imagine you and EPL in the middle of nowhere, doing all the daily routine and some dull stuff like "dishwashing" and this!

It's a miracle that you're not facing any mental crisis because of all the lack of other people, of solid ground, of walking, of good fresh food.

You're simply a toughie, that's it. Keep it up - surf the miles away with your pink vessel.

Impressed as always,

Stefan (Germany)

Hi Jessica,
Good to hear you have everything shipshape once more. While things are quiet, it would be a good time to fish, maybe a nice Atlantic Salmon!
I have been reading Abby's blog now as well. She also had squid jump onboard, some suggested cooking them!
You sound a bit reluctant getting those school books out, don't blame you, that would be the last thing on my mind as well...oops shouldn't say that should I, sorry.
Always enjoy hearing how you are faring.
Enjoy your tranquility, safe sailing.

Hello Jesse,

Have fun,

I looked at Abbys' blog today and she was talking about finding squid all over the deck and it put me in mind of your first few days out of Sydney. She was lamenting having forgotten to grab some pens and pencils..she apparently has one. I told her maybe some will show where she least expects them to..I would be difficult to not be able to sketch or write a few lines (other than on computer)-but I'm sure she'll get by if need be..

More later..Its' really good to be home..it was such a long day at work..yet I'm thankful to have work..and I was reminded that you haven't had the luxury of leaving epl for even a moment..other than up the mast. I know you will be happy to finally beable to go further than 34 feet..68 if you walked back.. :O)

Hopefully you won't forget all of us folks on this site that don't twit or tweet. Too much personal data on line ..particularly on Twitter is frowned upon where I work..aparrently some folks abused it..so I have kept my distance..figuring I haven't missed anything..but I would miss your blogs if you weren't writing here..

Jessi! If you don't have anything to to tell us what you are doing the whole day. When do you sleep, what do you eat and when? Are you reading books? When do you use your telephone? I thin you are doing a good job. You like your journey - but I'm not sure if Abby while be able to do it. She is having some problems.

Onya Jess, you deserve a bit of peace and quiet where you can catch up with your personal stuff. Their was a nice posting from Dilip and it is good to note you are in his thoughts. It would be good if one day the 2 of you caught up with each other and traded stories. I reckon one of your highlights must be how dolphins kept watch on you during the rough weather. Ok Jess back to you, sail on fellow Aussie, sail on you have a terrific armada of supporters right behind you.

Most pleased that the storms are over, for the time being anyway. Stove working, dunny fixed. Maybe time for a bit of a rest. Whilst you cannot build up a sleep credit, it would be refreshing to know that you are not too sleep deprived.

I am not sure that you need any more school work. You are a good communicator, sensible, level headed and most intelligent. There are many that leave school with far less than those qualities. Then there are life skills you have picked up since you left Australia. All these qualities will stand you in good stead for your future. And ------- you can forget Domestic Science classes. Anybody who can bake muffins on a tilting, moving, simple spirit stove gets an automatic pass.

Sail safe

Great to hear that the winds are favourable and that you have the time to make EPL comfortable and clean.

Let's hope the winds send you along so that the Cape of Good Hope (even Cape Agulhas) appears on your left very quickly.

Hi Jesse!

Well done so far!

I think you should look for good weather. It's much better to sail in calmer sea as in storm.
So go on, look for sun and blue sky.

Have fun with your school work (have to be done - hihihi)

All the best for you!

I think of you!

Hi Jesse,

Hope everthing's finally dried out down below in the warmer and calmer weather. Also a chance to catch up on some R & R. Not that school work comes under that classification but I'm sure some chocolate will take the pain away! Must be time to rig up the fishing line again?

HI Jess,

Very glad to hear that you've finally gotten some good weather. With all the rigging and lifelines full with laundry drying, EPL must look like a mobile laundramat. Keep heading east and keep us updated on your progress. You are an incredible writer. Not many people can "PAINT WORD PICTURES" as well as you do. Your descriptions are incredible and very vivid. All of your fans around the world would still like to see more pictures and video of you and EPL. Do what you can when you have the time.

Stay safe and clipped in and most of all, Have a great time.

Don't worry about your school work unless you really want to do it. I skipped 4th grade to go sailing and when I came back, I was ahead of everyone, even though I had not done any worksheets etc. Living life, observing and surviving are far more educational than any textbook.

Hi Jesse,
Already nearly half way through the Atlantic? Heck! You are flying, aren't you?
Back into a sort of routine then. That's got to be better than being tossed about like in a washing mashine, for sure.

Stay safe and enjoy

Hi Jesse, Glad to hear you've got some quiet time to recharge. The storm must seem a bit surrreal now with most things back in order again. Well done putting the toilet back together; they can be cantankerous things. Hope the rest of the crew have had a chance to dry out too??!! Enjoy. Fair winds mate. Gonecruising.

Hi Jessica! I just found out about you yesterday and stayed up late reading your blog and watching the videos. I'm 19 and this is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life! You make me think anything is possible.. and I've never even been in a boat. I left my family and moved cross country to try to be an actress and have been having a hard time. Seeing your story is so inspiring! From now on whenever I get down I will try to think of your positive attitude. Congratulations on your success! You've already done more than I or most adults will ever do!! Have fun out there on the boat and smooth sailing! :)

Hey Jesse,

Good to hear you are enjoying some pleasant weather. Good drying and airing out weather I imagine for what you have come through.

Though you may be thinking it is all coming to an end way to quickly, I am sure none of us will rest easy until you sail into Sydney Harbour. By then I am sure you will be starting to formulate a plan for your next adventure anyway.

Take care Jesse

I wish I were in your shoes (and younger)...

Oh well, I can dream and live vicariously. Planning to sail offshore ourselves in 2-3 years. Have the boat, just need a little more time. If we have 1/10th your courage, determination, and spirit -- oh , yes, and all must agree: sailing skills -- we'll be fortunate)

You are an inspiration (and a pretty damn good blogger)!

Hi Jesse,

You meanie!! reminding the kids back home that you're out there having fun and they have to go back to school!! Good for you I say, and great to hear things are a lot calmer for you weatherwise. I think you will miss being 'out there' when you get back to land and want to head off somewhere else, maybe set the record for the most times around the world!!! Mum and Dad probably wouldn't agree. Best of luck with the rest of the Atlantic and rounding the Cape of Good Hope, then the last leg to home. Stay safe, keep smiling,

Hi Jess,
Great to hear things have settled down. I hope you got to hear the couple of songs you inspired on you tube
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpuYBrDbcMw. I'm working on number 3!! I was lying in the dark listening to a storm last night and I thought of you alone in the middle of the ocean and I just wondered what it would be like on a moonless night out there. I really think what you're doing is amazing...go girl

Hi Jess

I'm just an oldie beyond my "use-by-date", or so it seems. But, that's by-the-way.
What I want to say is that it is so refreshing to know there are still teenagers with positive mature spirit.
After observing many of the youth around where I live I was beginning to lose faith in the future. It has been sad and depressing to watch young people with their whole life in front of them just throwing it away with purposeless self destructive behaviour, using the excuse that they are bored.
You have restored my faith in youth and the future.
O that there were many many more like you, willing to follow their dream with real passion and a sense of constructive purpose.
You are a perfect role model for your generation and an inspiration to us all, both young and old.

Looking forward to your safe arrival home.
May God keep you safe.

I can understand how you will feel when you can see the trip is nearing landfall and you want to keep sailing.

Everyday I check your blogg and you have helped me sail it with you. I too will be disappointed.

I love sailing and the sea... you have inspired me to do more. Thank you for sharing. You really are a wonderful lovable fair dinkum Aussie girl!

For our wonderful friends from afar read the Australian expression 'fair dinkum' as real, no nonsense and down to earth.
That's our Jesse!
