Wind, Waves, Action and Drama!

My quite sunny conditions ended with a bit of a bang, Ella's Pink Lady and I have been having a very interesting time out here. The wind had been expected to rise to a near gale, but none of the computers or forecasts picked that it would reach the 65knots that I recorded, before losing the wind instruments in a knockdown!

That much wind means some very big and nasty waves. To give you an idea of the conditions, they were similar to and possibly worse than those of the terrible 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. We experienced a total of 4 knockdowns, the second was the most severe with the mast being pushed 180 degrees in to the water. Actually pushed isn't the right word, it would be more accurate to say that Ella's Pink Lady was picked up, thrown down a wave, then forced under a mountain of breaking water and violently turned upside down.

With everything battened down and conditions far too dangerous to be on deck, there wasn't anything I could do but belt myself in and hold on. Under just the tiny storm jib, the big electric autopilot did an amazing job of holding us on course downwind, possibly or possibly not helped by my yells of encouragement! It was only the big rogue waves that hit at us at an angle (side on) that proved dangerous and caused the knockdowns.

The solid frame of the targa (the frame that supports the solar panels) is bent out of shape and warped (see pic below), which provides a pretty good idea of the force of the waves. Solid inch thick stainless steel tube doesn't exactly just bend in the breeze, so I think you could say that Ella's Pink Lady has proven herself to be a very tough little boat!

With my whole body clenched up holding on, various objects flying around the cabin and Ella's Pink Lady complaining loudly under the strain, it was impossible to know what damage there was on deck. It was a little hard at times to maintain my positive and rational thoughts policy, but overall I think I can say that the skipper held up us well as Ella's Pink Lady. It was certainly one of those times when you start questioning exactly why you're doing this, but at no point could I not answer my own question with a long list of reasons why the tough times like that aren't totally worth it!

So in the middle of all the drama, back at home Mum received just about the worst phone call possible from the Australian Rescue Coordination Center (RCC), telling her that one of my EPIRBs (emergency signaling devices) had been activated. One of the knockdowns had caused the automatic EPIRB mounted under the dodger to turn on without me knowing. Luckily I called in only a few minutes later before anyone could really start to panic. I was pretty annoyed at the stupid thing for going off and giving everyone such a scare!

We didn't come though completely un-scathed though, as there's plenty of minor damage, but luckily nothing bad enough to stop us. Actually I think it's a huge credit to our rigger David Lambourne, that the that mast is still standing and appears in perfect working condition. So other than the wonky looking targa, the starboard solar panel is all bent up and the windvane is now sitting on a bit of an angle, but amazingly and very luckily, it still works fine (go Parker!). There are also a few tears in the mainsail and one of the stanchions is bent in.

Down below, the cabin was a totally disaster zone, everything is wet or damp. The dunny (toilet) which fell apart, was in pieces spread from one end of the boat to the other, along with other equipment. The meth stove wont light, but will hopefully fire up when it dries out a little more.

After clearing up the worst of it and despite finally managing some good sleep, I still feel like a giant marshmallow. Physically, my arms and legs are all heavy and pathetic and of course I have a lovely collection of bruises! Mentally, I feel like I've aged a good 10 years, but I'm back to normal now and in good spirits as we approach the half way mark.

When the wind had finally calmed down, I was treated to a pretty incredible sunset and as I was clearing things up on deck, a couple of dolphins stopped by just as if they were checking that we were all OK.

I owe a huge thanks to Bruce, who was completely perfect, saying just the right things on the phone every time I called in and also to Bob who stayed up through the night to keep me updated on when the wind could be expected to ease.

I could go on forever, but better finish up as this has turned into a total novel and there's plenty still to do!
Jesse

OMG Jesse, that's scary! I mean, I'm scared for you just reading your post and knowing you came through it alright, wow! 180 degrees...upside down...I can't even begin to imagine what that felt like and the thoughts that were probably going through your mind. But, wow, am I ever impressed and proud of you that you kept your wits about you and stayed calm (no witnesses to ever say otherwise right?). I also feel for your family with the scare with the emergency signal but at least you know it works. Your adventure got me thinking, if you had run into trouble that didn't work out so well would your support crew have had resources available to get help to you quickly?

Before I heard about your trip shortly before you left in October I had never paid much attention to sailing but your trip has caught my attention and I can't imagine a day without checking your blog and website several times hoping for updates. I am very impressed and extremely proud of you sticking with your goal and how well you are doing.

I was reading your latest post to my 17 year old son and he wants to know how you can stand being alone for so long with no place to go other than the boat. He would be bored to death (probably cause there'd be no TV or car to drive or text messages). I told him you kept busy and that you are doing something you love which makes it fun, and exciting. Just thought I'd share his thoughts.

Well, again I am very proud of you and how great you are doing. I love your posts and pics. Take care and God bless you!

Thanks for sharing all of your story, Jess, and your experience of the recent incredible storm with the knockdowns. Your vivid writing allowed all of us armchair adventurers to be there with you. Congratulations, again, to you (and your team)! I stand in awe of your courage and your talents as a sailor.

Oh, Jesse, it sounds so much worse even than we had imagined. I don't know how you managed so well. (By the way, do you like roller coasters??? I hope so, because you were sure on one.)

This testing that you went through during the storm may have proven Ella's Pink Lady to be a tough little boat, but it also has proven Ella's Pink Lady's lady to be one tough young skipper!!!

I hope the loss of the wind instruments isn't going to be serious. You mentioned you still have Parker working, so, hopefully, everything will still be okay!

Hope you brought your sewing kit, with that special sail needle and thread, and the "palm" thingy (???) to help push the needle through the strong fabric of your mainsail to repair those tears!!

:Your incredible sunset must certainly have been Mother Nature's way of saying "I'm sorry, Jesse, to have put you through all that raging tempest . . . look at the beautiful show I'm putting on, just for you, to apologize!!! "

And, don't forget to wave to those dolphin, and talk to them and maybe you'll hear them talk back; they do, you know!! At any rate, be sure to give them one of your biggest smiles to thank them for their loyalty!!!

STAY SAFE, STAY CLIPPED ON, STAY POSITIVE, AND STAY THE COURSE!

Many prayers, much love, and lots of hugs and squeezes are continuing to be sent out to you!!!

Thank God you are okay! And, please, God, let this be the worst of it!!! We want our Lady Jessica back home, safe and sound!

Thank God you made it through. I am pretty sure a lot of us prayed for your safe passage through the storm.

Saw the picture of the frame and solar panel. That must have been a good rogue wave that hit you. And the four knockdowns must have freaked you a little bit as well.

Glad that both you and the Pink Lady came through ok though.

I can't wait to hear what has to sing about next for. I think by the time you get back to Sydney, he will have a whole album just about you.

I think the dolphins came to warn you about the storm and when you saw them again, they were making sure you were safe and sound. They have their own network like whales do underwater.

So, get some rest, fix what you can and try to have some fun. :)

Good on ya Jess, it had to come sooner or later and you and "Ella" got through it all with flying colours. Like you say, good prep goes a hell of a long way when your at sea and get something like that thrown at you.

You're doing well and making us all proud at home....and now you've actually had the experience of the real deal of the strength and power of our mother ocean and handled it well...just as we expected you would due to all your prior training and preperation for exactly what happened.

I'm off to Hawaii on Thursday to shoot at Pipeline for a few weeks. The forecast wave face heights I recieved this morning from Surfline for the day I land there Jan 28th are for 18 to 20 feet. It's looking good for some big action for my stay there. Check my website for some photos of it all after about the 30th Jan if you are looking for something to kill a bit of time with.

Jess, Jess, Jess, I got such a jolt when I saw the front page headline on today's paper (having been away from my computer for 48 hours). It sounds like a shocker of a "perfect storm" yet you hung on and EPL hung in there and got you through. (DeeJ - the keel is much heavier than the boat, hence she is able to right herself)
I love the fact that you are adhering to your "positivity policy", catching up on sleep, and still appreciating sunsets and dolphins. Hope the crew managed to hold on tight and the chocolate stash is still edible. By the way, were you wearing your helmet while you were strapped in?

Jessica,

I read your account of the storm, and then I had to read it 3 more times to grasp it all. You know, Jess, I think that I could hear you yell at your autopilot all the way up here in the U.S. Sounds like it performed very well. I’m so glad to hear that my friend, Parker, weathered the storm, too. I’ve been in some conditions in which I wondered what the heck I was doing out there, but nothing that could even begin to compare to what you went through. I can imagine that your Mum was terrified when she got the call that your EPIRB went off. But I guess the EPIRB did what it was supposed to in those conditions. I was curious if you carried a series drogue on EPL. To See The SEA mentioned a Jordan series drogue, so I wondered what your team’s thoughts were regarding using one. I hope it doesn’t take long to dry things out and to get the necessities functioning again. It sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

Just when I think that I could not be more impressed with you, you outdo yourself. Ella’s Pink Lady is certainly a stout vessel but you, Jess, are a pillar of strength.

Have fun, stay safe and happy sailing.

OK - that was obviously one heck of a ride! Gee - she's a real little battler, obviously - must take after her skipper! You two have some sort of bond out there - guess that's what it's all about - as long as one of you hangs in there, the other won't let anyone down either. Like all good partnerships, a bit of turn and about. It's a strange place to be - and one that most of us will never know - to be someplace where you have no option but to hang on, and there's nothing you can do about it. But of course, the real thing is the trust and belief. This may have been the worst you'll face; it may not be. But you two are gonna do this, of that there is no doubt. Continue to take good care of her, because she's obviously taking bloody good care of you. Give her a hug - from all of us!

Hi Jessica,
When you write that you were "yelling encouragement at the electric autopilot." You seem to be trying to achieve your "rational thoughts policy" aim by not calling it Parker, well done:)

♣Tony L said Rob Mundle's book 'Fatal Storm' has some marvelous aerial photos of the yachts on that terrible day. Richard Bennett got a few awards for his pics in that book. At the 50 second mark in this Youtube link there's a wave that would seem to be similar to what Jessica described so amazingly in one of those knockdowns.

My 18 yo old daughter and I just read your incredible post, and we are dumbfounded. How did you do it? The fact that you suffered no physical damage, broken bones, concussions, etc., and the fact that Pink is, for the most part, still in relatively good working order, is nothing short of miraculous. That you were upset the EPIRB went of in the midst of it all is nearly unbelievable and yet laughable, if it weren't for the fact that I 'know' you and what you are made of! The only error I see in your 'novel' is that you didn't age ten years in the last 48 hours of madness and mayhem....you were already a good ten years 'older and wiser' when you began this adventure...otherwise you wouldn't have survived four knockdowns unscathed. Each time I am blown away by your youthfulness and maturity (such a paradox!), you amaze me yet again....Wow...if it weren't for the fact of communicating my thoughts by typing, I am speechless. Awesome, amazing, accomplished, incredibly proud of you- these words don't come close. I wish you fair winds and sunshine in the coming days- for you and Pink to both catch a rest, and for the sun's rays to soak up the soggy mess. God Bless you. -Karyn, IN, USA

My god Jesse.... i would have called home and said enough is enough come n get me.!!!!..... No i wouldnt....cos anything like that you go thru only makes you stronger... Smile

My God!!!!

Thats some scary stuff though.....not only for you but for your family and friends who would want to help you.

Damn that the toilet was thrown about....i would have been running every 5 minutes (well maybe not, being strapped in...probably would a done it right there n then)

Im not suprised you questioned why you were out there.....but hey....as with most things in life....we do take the good with the bad.....and the best thing about a storm like that is the wonderful sunset/ sunrise that follows.

I cant imagine what it must have been like...ive been on the seas in weather like that....but in a much bigger vessel ( i was on a russian ice breaker)...and that was bad enough.

Ide love to hear how your folks are coping....honestly i think it would be worse for them knowing what your going thru and not being able to be there for you....thats sssooooooooo hard.

Any way im really glad Ella and Parker are taking care of you. im glad your ground crew are there at the end of a phone...that must be a god send and im glad you can thru it with minor damage, both you and ella

This blog is all over the news now.....smile

Im expecting more posts here now!!!

Dear Jess and Fellow Followers.

I agree with everyone comments, so I thought I would add something else.
Another follower in one of the last post asked "I wonder how many people you have inspired" ?

Well after being stuck in a relationship with someone that does not share my dreams of adventure. Living in a boring sea side village on the Costa Blanca, with bad diving (I am an Instructor), no fish for fishing and no surfing.

Jess my true Hero and Inspiration I can say: In 48 hours time I will be on the plane to Egypt to dive the Red Sea. Diving on the world famous wreck of the "Thistlegorm" that Jack Cousteau discovered (one dream ticked of the list). Then visiting the Pyramids.

Next heading to South East Asia, possibly crewing for a week or a month on a cruising sailing yacht to gain more experience (another dream).

Finlay heading back home to OZ, to make some money and gain more sailing experience. To buy my own yacht and live a cruisers life (my ultimate dream).

All I can say is yes, Jess have inspired me immensely my Ozy Hero. Thank You!

Hi Jessica,
Just finished a post on "Pre Storm Pics" and "Wind, Waves, Action and Drama!" popped up. That is one hell-uv-a story. Thank God and all the Angels that you're OK. Sorry to hear about the mess below and the damage above, but you're ok and that's what matters!!!
With my vivid imagination I could picture what it was like from your previous post, and the shore crews report, but when you gave it in detail it put a whole new meaning to what actually happened.

But first I want to thank you for the post, even though it’s all typed there’s a certain something about getting this information straight from you, not putting the shore crew down, but with my imagination (lol) I can almost hear your voice and that makes me feel much better knowing that you’re alright.

I had a little bit of a snicker when I read how annoyed you were with that stupid thing (EPIRB) for going off and giving everyone such a scare!
You were asked once in an interview what scared you the most about leaving on this trip. One of the answers was that you were concerned about the people you were leaving behind worrying about you. (Not the exact words but that’s the gist of it).
Your concern for your loved ones, regardless of your situation, is amazing.
You're really a very deep warm person. If all the Aussie women are like you, I’m gonna head on down there and see if I can find me one. Ha, ha. LOL…

Top priority: Fix the dunny!!!!!!!
I’m sure the stove will come back when it dries out. How did the heater fare.

Well Jessica, take care of them bruises, if you have some liniment, and continue on with that high spirit, chin up attitude. Hi Jess
Well good to hear you are back in fine spirits again after a harrowing time out there with mother nature flexing her muscles.

I had shivers down my spine reading your account of that night that you will never forget. Hopefully the damage sustained will not hinder your progress, does the solar panel still work? Parker and the Rigger deserve a medal as well, they have shown the strength they are made of. And Jess you deserve a box of medals - to be confronted with a frightening set of circumstances during the night, storm force winds, rogue waves, knockdowns - YOU ARE AMAZING !! Fear is an ok emotion as its offsider is self preservation - to make sure you are as safe as you possibly can be!! EPL sure is a strong little lady.

The mess, the toilet flung everywhere, the wet.... I hope you get some fine warm weather to help dry things out, and to give you a chance to get things back in order.

I bet you slept like a log !!!

Your spirits and confidence were probably scattered around the cabin momentarily, but sounds like you have shaken yourself off, and can stand up proud at the helm and keep on chewing up those miles.

Fantastic job to the shore team who stayed up during the night giving you updates and encouragement just knowing someone else was there. I imagine mum, dad and the shore team needed a stiff drink by morning.

Bless you Jess, yes you have a list a mile long of why you are there, and what you are doing. You have shown your maturity and capabilities way beyond your years.

Well done to you !! HIP HIP HORRAY.
Settle back into a routine and one step at a time, one day at a time. YOU GO GIRL !!!!

Crikey Moses Jesse what the hell - but your in one piece and for that I am eternally grateful. I think anybody who doubted your resolve has been quietened forever. Mentally you have toughed it out and that's the bigger of the battles our there - if the head is still in positive shape then it's a great sign for the future for surely you couldn't possibly encounter anything much worse than what you have just described.

Reading it made the heart palpitate a lot faster than is safe, believe me; my worry beards slid rapidly into a deep coma and my Jesse-Stress meter exploded. But despite my own catastrophe my little Jesse is fine - I am so, so, so relieved darl.

It is good that you have got a bit of sleep in but I am worried about your kitchen and your capacity to cook. I also hope your food supply has not been damaged or any of it lost. No doubt the mind will be focused on doing whatever maintenance you can particularly on the critical equipment.

My thoughts are with you precious girl and be proud of your efforts and also be positive about the fact that although you no doubt experienced fear you faced it and conquered it. Jesse be forever vigilant, keep yourself clipped on tightly and keep the mind in the present. Take care precious one and God Bless.

My goodness, Jesse! Even though there was always a strong possibility you'd run into some interesting weather, there's a huge difference between contemplating the possible, and experiencing the reality! And you, chirpy little monster, have written of your experience as if it were a minor adventure, while all of us are having minor heart attacks on your behalf! I guess that's the crucial difference between those of us who sit here in safety and admire your courage and effort, and you, who are putting yourself out there every day. I don't really understand you but I sure as heck admire and respect you. Well done, woman!

Captain Jesse the Explorer

Dear Captain,
Knowing the storm was on the way had us (your blog family) all worried, and imagining crazy stuff. I confess to fearing the worst- but as we all can see, clearly you are equal to any great challenge. Thank God you are well and safe.

I can find no words to express my awe, my admiration for you. The days and years ahead will be, I am sure, the unfolding of a life, your life, that will astound us all.

Never change, Dear Captain, and continue to inspire us all with your courage and grace.

For a while you really had us scared for you. I'm so happy I have a tear in my eye. Godspeed, Dear Captain Jesse and may all the dolphins and angels watch over you.

Go Parker ? hell no.

It's Go Jesse, Go ELP, Go Parker, Go the Preparation Team. when every part of a well prepared package comes together you survive all that challenges you.

We had an amazing team all brought together of Skipper, Yacht, Equipment, Fittings and Fixtures having a face off with Mother Nature and you come out the other side with a few dents and bumps.

Imagine what you've done to mother natures ego.LOL

You are one incredible lady Jessica Watson. you've ridden out a similar storm that toppled some big boats and long time professional sailors in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart. you come out the other side with damaged gear, a battered and physically drained body and what do you tell us, "Isn't that a nice sunset and the dolphins are back".

A storm like that would have many brave men cowering in the corner with fear and sobbing about the aftermath for attention and many would head for land to avoid another bashing.

Not our Jesse, she's just given us a few details of the bad stuff in her usual entertaining blog but brightens us up with the good that came from the storm. like the sunset and dolphins alongside.

You were strapped to the wet chair and couldn't see but I wouldn't mind betting those dolphins were about through the storm looking out for you.

Your mother must have been a wreck for a short time with the EPIRB transmitting a signal and I doubt she calmed much until the storm over report came in.

The two of you must be made of damned sturdy genes because you both knew there would be moments of scary s*^t through the trip but you prepared yourselves equally well as the equipment was.

You are never failing to amaze us with blogs that tell of the fiddly amusing stuff and the major challenges you've faced but you have never once let the reader down.

You have shown you are just as dedicated to your supporters as you are of completing this voyage. you even wrote this blog before all repairs were done because you knew we were concerned and craved news of your welfare.

I salute you Jessica and congratulate you on the courage you faced with this storm. to your credit you are going to patch up a few things with gaffer tape (giggle) and get on with the solo voyage.

I was reading your blog soaking in what the atmosphere of the storm must have been like then all of a sudden I had tears in my eyes when you said "Go Parker".

Parker is going to end up being a monument somewhere in Queensland after this voyage is over. Or is he going to get Australian of the Year for 2010 ?.

Think about that judges, there's no rule it has to be a person and ELP's Parker has been an increadable servant to Jessica through thick and thin.

Did Ella Bache give you some bruise fixing cream. you meed to look your best for those gardian dolphins.

Cheers and enjoy the ride. all going well you can do the rest of the trip with the keel in the water instead of facing up.

Hello Super Girl!! (Beverly here in Tassie) Well, my heart was pounding out of my body just from reading the "News" the other day; now I can't even breathe.

You are the most amazing, courageous, person I've ever "known". I have no words my dear, to describe how I feel about you and EPL.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU - to Bob and Bruce for hanging with our girl during this time. You both deserve gold medals, right along with Jessica. You can now stop and have a cuppa with something a bit stronger in it. Bob, reckon you need some sleep also. What a legend you two are for being right there during the entire time Jessica needed you.

MOM & DAD and family: you can now take your hearts out of your mouth and put it back where it belongs. I can't imagine going thru that and getting "the" phone call if my daughter was out there doing something like that. God Bless you all for raising such a wonderful person in the form of Jessica. We love her probably as much as you do if that is at all possible.

SHORE TEAM: Take a deep breath, sit down, have a cuppa, sigh deeply, then cry. This one is over, let us pray that there is not another one of this magnitude.
Thank you for all the support you give Jessica and for keeping us, the Jessaholics, updated on her "mis"adventures when needed. I know I appreciate them and I also know that the "family" does too.

Jessica, I'm sorry nobody can help you clean up the mess, but that would make your voyage "assisted" so guess you have to do it yourself. Sorry hon. Is the cabin so damp that the flint in the stove can't dry out? Does the cabin get any sunlight when the sun doth shine? I hope so, I would hate to imagine you having to do the rest of the journey with damp clothes, and a coolish, damp cabin. I am thankful though that this storm happened "after" you were out of the "cold" zone. Icicles on the cabin ceiling wouldn't be a good thing.

Remember, and you know this for sure now, GOD is with you, beside you every second of your life, and His Legions of Angels are surrounding you and EPL, safely guiding you out of the foul weather, into something calmer so you can rest up a bit. {{{HUGS}}} Beverly & Andrew Penney, Tasmania

We took our 'party pontoon' for a cruise on the Gold Coast broadwater today, hit a log (or something!), oil started leaking out, I just kept thinking of what you'd just been through so our little problem was barely a blip on the radar compared to yours!
We fixed it & had a lovely day, 4 dolphins swam beside us as we cruised up the Nerang river for a while, it was beautiful.
Stay safe, X.

Just another quick comment to let you know your competitor for youngest solo sailor left the Del Rey Yacht Club at 11:30am 23rd January 2010 in an Open 40 racing sailboat http://www.abbysunderland.com/

Abby was born on 19/10/93 so is younger than you and after your record but I'm very certain she will have some nasty weather to face from this time of year and by the time she gets down to Cape Horn she'll be in iceberg territory.

After reading her story and preperation I think your's is way ahead.

Dear Jesse,

Your novel was excellent, I didn't want it to end. I can't wait till it's made into an autobiography!

Well done Jesse, so pleased to hear that you are okay and EPL can carry on. What a roller coaster ride you had. Oh dear, no Dunny! Never mind that's the least of your worries. LOL

Just think of it as a spring clean and get your crew to work :-). I wish that I could magically wave my magic wand and fix all the little nooks and crannies that neat a little TLC on EPL.

I hope that because the meth stove isn't lighting will not limit you with what you can eat. I do hope that as it dries out it will work again. You need a few good meals after all that energy you used through the storm. I guess you will need a little more than a needle and thread to fix the mainsail!

The dolphins always turn up at the right time don't they :-). They know when our Jesse needs a little company.

You're a brave lass Jesse and you need a "MEDAL FOR BRAVERY" getting through that storm with such a great attitude.

A big thanks to Bruce and Bob for talking you through things during the storm :-).

Take care Jesse and keep safe my dear. Warmest wishes from Jan Pace (Auckland, New Zealand)

With the rest of the blog family, I am so glad and relieved, that you came through this, with nothing more than bruises.

OMG, Ella and you turned upside down..........

I am breathing a sigh (many) of relief, that we get to know this after the fact"

You and EPL came through with flying colors.
What a champion you are!

Fortunately, you called your Mum and Dad and they weren't left in the belief too long, that you and EPL were in grave danger.

And your fantastic support team, they are beyond words!
Also, all the people who helped refit the boat!

Hope you can repair some of the damage and it is so good to hear, that the damage wasn't major!

Did the toilet come together again?

And then, as if nature wanted to apologize, a lovely sunset and the dolphins came to visit!

You are amazing, Jessica,

Hope you get more rest and that the bruises disappear quickly.

And we don't want to repeat that kind of show again. You've experienced it, that'll do now!

Sail on Captain Watson, keep well, keep happy and above all keep safe,

What an experience! Probably one you can do without again?

You must have been scared stiff in an upside down yacht under the water .. wow! So what did you do and say? Alone out there and all alone. The reason I ask that, for most people a good yell/scream is a very natural reaction to fear.

I live alone in the bush - one day I walked into my kitchen to find a 3+ metre python ambling its way across my bench top. I started to scream then realised that was pointless because no-one would hear me and I'd be wasting my breath.

My next reaction was to take it out on the snake - I came out with this stream of abuse about animals that are not welcome in my house. The snake lifted its head at the noise and was totally unaffected by the commotion but it made me feel better! It eventually responded by ambling its way out of the house in its own good time!

So I hope you found something to yell at?

Best wishes for smoother sailing for the rest of the trip!

Hey Jesse,

First of all, let me apologise for not commenting for a few days, been busy with Lake Macquarie Golf Championship, and am now preparing for NSW Amateur Golf Championships so after Monday, you won't hear from me again for another 4 days.

WOW! You have had a busy ole time since I last read your posts. I am VERY HAPPY that you have come through the storms relatively unscathed. Even for an experienced sailor like yourself, it must have been pretty bloody scary! I would be shitting myself and it would have been worse without a working toilet! LOL

What I don't get is how does the toilet break apart without your cabin being covered in mess - please enlighten us!

Good to hear that King Neptune is still sending his dolphin messengers over your way to check on you.

I hope that all the minor repairs can be completed and that the major damage that you suffered won't stop you from reaching your goals.

My thoughts go out to you once again and I wish you very well over the next few days.

Keep your chin up and keep smiling and working hard!

Take care gorgeous girl (hope the little kisses and hugs below help to cheer you up somewhat).

Hi Jesse

just read your blog again and am pretty well lost for words. You, your boat, your parents, and all your shore team are pretty amazing, tough and resilient. Rounding the Cape is itself a challenge, but there is always that risk of a knockdown when sailing the southern waters where you are. I guess knowing the risk and acccepting it is one thing, but to actually experience it is another. And it seems as if you are a glutton for punishment: not 1, or 2, but 4 knockdowns. This is truely a test for you and your boat. And a 180 as well - I am speechless. If that was me I would be saying "beam me up Scotty", and probably activating the EPIRBS myself!!

Your actions and descriptions again highlight how truely you have "the right stuff" to be where you are at the moment - sort of in your groove. And the sea has tested you and it looks as if you have passed with flying colours. Disfunctional wind instruments and a dunny in spatial dissaray throughout your boat are pretty trivial - I hope the stove is ok though....

I hope you do not have any more tests as difficult as this one left - 4 is certainly enough for 1 boat on a voyage.

As always, all the best from here and keep up the good - no the truely outstanding - work!!

Well you sure have guts. I was so scared for you that I wasn't game to even think about it. Fancy, four knock downs. I can hardly believe it. You would have to be about the bravest person I've heard of. I would have been just so sacred. Anyway so pleased you come through it OK. Keep up the good work and I'll see you on TV when you get back. All the best of luck. I feel so sorry for your parents having to go through that agony even if it was for 2 minutes. Look after yourself now.

Hi Jesse,

Wow...what a time you have had. I cannot imagine what you just went through. Your blog really tells us what sort of wonderful person you are. I am sure the battering you took is far worse than you describe.

Glad you have come through it and and still able to continue your journey.

Hope the weather stays calm for you for a least the next fw days to give you time to repair the damage that you are able to fix.

Keep safe special girl and I look forward to hearing from you again when you have time.

When things are back to "normal", please give us some more detail of the whole storm. Incredible!!

Hi Jess,

I hope you realize that now I have to change my lesson plans for tomorrow... not only do I have to explain to the Killer Whales what a "KNOCK DOWN" is, but now we have to get into 180 degree "TURTLES?" Perhaps we can do a lesson on mirror images of EPL?

Jess, you are absolutely amazing! After going through your "interesting time out there", being knocked down 4 times and being inverted... you have the presence of mind to tidy things up, take a photo for your blog family and then appreciate a beautiful sunset... unbelievable!

By the way, it's a good thing that you made that phone call to Mom after your EPIRB was activated...
your parents must be strong just like you, but I'm not sure if your blog family would have survived the news reports!

Stay safe & keep sailing,
Paul
(and the Killer Whales)

PS Thanks again for up-dating us all. I totally love reading your blogs... descriptive, honest, modest and as always, positive!

Wow Jesse, that must have been better than any of the thrill rides at Dreamworld etc. So glad we are reading that you are relatively unscathed. Shame about the dunny, but a good alternative is a bucket half full of seawater.

Looks like she was thrown upside down off a huge wave, lets hope thats the last of the nasty stuff. I guess you expected conditions like this at some stage. Main thing is not to try to sail through it, just survive till it calms again.

I guess its back up the pole young lady for some repairs. Take care now, you have proved yourself, a lot of grown men would have s*** themselves in that situation, and made the mistake of abandoning a sound ship for the discomforts of a less sound ship, the liferaft. You have what it takes, and sound judgement, and one hell of a cool head.

Jess you magnificent Darling. 4 knockdowns including an almost 180is an amazing experience. I had 3 in the 98 Hobart with 2 at the helm in the cockpit and we lost all our radios and wind gear with the anemoneter stuck at 78 knots. You didn't say which hard hat you were wearing and at what stage of the storm did you switch on EPL's powerful electric Parker?
When you get the time start to think about your entry into Sydney Harbour. We know Sydney's adopted you and are are going to turn out in full force to welcome you home.

Good on you little one; there's a mighty long way still to sail and you can do it. Just remember Murphy's always around the corner, just waiting for you to lower your guard. Keep the blogs coming they're utterly rivetting! Best wishes Sydneysider

My goodness Jesse, what a time of it you have had.

I think you have proven to the last of your die-hard conscientious objectors just what a great skipper you are. Nerves of steel and a great sense of humour. What a combination. Not to mention a zillion of your other attributes. Keep writing your novels, I love them.

Sounds like you and EPL are both going to be sore for a while from getting bruised all over. Well in terms of things to scare the living daylights out of your folks your EPIRB going off was the second worst thing that could have happened. You saved them lots of gray hairs from calling in so quickly. The worst think would have been to pick up a signal from your PBL (do you carry one) indicating you were getting your feet wet – but that isn’t going to happen because I say so!!!! OK!!

I think having the storm and the knockdowns was great for many reasons. The first is I am hoping that you have had the most severe weather that you are ever going to have to put up with. The second is that you now know that you can stay the course and deal with some of the worst weather that mother nature can throw at you - clearly she had a bee in her bonnet about something! So, knock on wood, there will be no more crazy weather coming your way. And you also know that EPL can take a total beating and still come out pink all over. How much pressure would it have taken to bend that thing holding your solar panels!!!??? You are right. What amazing job your team has done with your rig.

What a story you are going to have to tell your grandchildren someday. They will be proud of you just like we are.

Sail safe, sail fast.
Best wishes

Captain Jesse, your entry is as strong as the storm, your description is... leaves me speechless. At the end, I felt cold, my eyes were full of tears, sorry you had to meet such an ordeal, but most of all, relieved that you could went through. Minor damages... no surprise after that! They had to be at least minor, hoping they won't be more annoying. Bruises, I bet! You could well have your skin blue in more than one place!
It is just frightening, scaring, terrifying to imagine the scenes you tell us, and as you are a talented writer, we do "watch" them, with you belted and yelling, and the cabin turning almost upside down, and the shocks of these monstruous waves. OMG. I read holy crap, holy cow, holy smoke, we are missing holy words to express our emotion.
Your tidy cabin must have been devastated. Much work for a marshmallowy energetic crew.

I hope you won't meet a second big nasty storm. One is by far enough to prove your toughness and your sailorship (funny word).
The EPIRB joke isn't funny at all, good that you could call soon after, everybody at home must have turned white-green-yellow. OMG (again).

I hope our favorite marshmallow sailor will find some remaining muscles under her bruises to take care of her Pink Lady, inside and outside. She has bruises too. You are a pair of tough cookies, and won even more admiration than before the storm, though it didn't seem possible!

Keep on taking good care of each other, we love you, girls! And wish you a quiet, but fast sailing to Africa.

@Larry (Guam) and Tony L: Hi pals, I loved your posts. I feel just the same.
@Michael, Kingwood: of course it was pure joking! Our little heroin is such an immense character, and you are such a loving and lovely person. I like the way you play Grandpa with her, and I share your feelings.
@Stephen M. Thinking of you, and your hard but great work. Brave Stephen.

I must thank you for your very informative blog Jesse, I was completely glued.

I conjured mental pictures of what was written in my mind. Got stuck on some of it and had to read it twice to make sure I was reading, what I was reading.

I am not so conceited to think that I would have the slightest clue of how it really was out there and what went on.
To do that I would have to experience it, first hand.

Hi Jesse,

your account is as real as it gets and shows, with stark reality, the life threatening dangers you were and are facing out there. I can only imagine the emotions you were going thru during that harrowing ordeal.

Jesse, you have been to hell and back and you've shown us all what true grit you so clearly possess.

To be constantly pummelled, thrown around and literally tipped upside-down for 8hrs is testament to your courage under fire. Resigned to the fact that nothing more physically can be done but belt in and hold on, you didn't give up, giving yells of encouragement to your auto-pilot.

Doubts about why you're doing this, especially under those extremes, is normal. The willpower and your over-riding dream you have had for this journey over the years quickly negated any such thoughts to give in. I have no doubts at all that you will succeed.

You and Ella's Pink Lady have been severely tested and you have both come out of it with but a few scratches and bruises...luckily!

Easy for me to say Jesse, but the experience will be of benefit for any similar encounters ahead. I sincerely hope there won't be...
especially of that magnitude.

Sail safely young captain. Sleep well and build up the reserves. With you and Ella to the finish.
